Centibillionaire Elon Musk’s takeover of the former US Digital Service—now the United States DOGE Service—has been widely publicized and sanctioned by one of President Donald Trump’s many executive orders. But WIRED reporting shows that Musk’s influence extends even further, and into an even more consequential government agency.
Sources within the federal government tell WIRED that the highest ranks of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM)—essentially the human resources function for the entire federal government—are now controlled by people with connections to Musk and to the tech industry. Among them is a person who, according to an online résumé, was set to start college last fall.
Scott Kupor, a managing partner at the powerful investment firm Andreessen Horowitz, stands as Trump’s nominee to run the OPM. But already in place, according to sources, are a variety of people who seem ready to carry out Musk’s mission of cutting staff and disrupting the government.
Amanda Scales is, as has been reported, the new chief of staff at the OPM. She formerly worked in talent for xAI, Musk’s artificial intelligence company, according to her LinkedIn. Before that, she was part of the talent and operations team at Human Capital, a venture firm with investments in the defense tech startup Anduril and the political betting platform Kalshi; before that, she worked for years at Uber. Her placement in this key role, experts believe, seems part of a broader pattern of the traditionally apolitical OPM being converted to use as a political tool.
“I don't think it's alarmist to say there's a much more sophisticated plan to monitor and enforce loyalty than there was in the first term,” says Don Moynihan, a professor of public policy at the University of Michigan.
Got a Tip?
Are you a current or former employee with the Office of Personnel Management or another government agency impacted by Elon Musk? We’d like to hear from you. Using a nonwork phone or computer, contact Vittoria Elliott at [email protected] or securely at velliott88.18 on Signal.
Sources say that Riccardo Biasini, formerly an engineer at Tesla and most recently director of operations for the Las Vegas Loop at the Boring Company, Musk’s tunnel-building operation, is also at the OPM as a senior adviser to the director. (Steve Davis, the CEO of the Boring Company, is rumored to be advising Musk on cuts to be made via DOGE and was integral in Musk’s gutting of Twitter, now X, after his takeover of the company in 2022.)
According to the same sources, other people at the top of the new OPM food chain include two people with apparent software engineering backgrounds, whom WIRED is not naming because of their ages. One, a senior adviser to the director, is a 21-year-old whose online résumé touts his work for Palantir, the government contractor and analytics firm cofounded by billionaire Peter Thiel, who is its chair. (The former CEO of PayPal and a longtime Musk associate, Thiel is a Trump supporter who helped bankroll the 2022 Senate campaign of his protégé, Vice President JD Vance.) The other, who reports directly to Scales, graduated from high school in 2024, according to a mirrored copy of an online résumé and his high school’s student magazine; he lists jobs as a camp counselor and a bicycle mechanic among his professional experiences, as well as a summer role at Neuralink, Musk’s brain-computer interface company.
Among the new highers-up at the OPM is Noah Peters, an attorney whose LinkedIn boasts of his work in litigation representing the National Rifle Association and who has written for right-wing outlets like the Daily Caller and the Federalist; he is also now a senior adviser to the director. According to metadata associated with a file on the OPM website, Peters authored a January 27 memo that went out under acting OPM director Charles Ezell’s name describing how the department would be implementing one of Trump’s executive orders, “Restoring Accountability to Policy-Influencing Positions Within the Federal Workforce.” This has to do with what’s sometimes known as Schedule F—a plan to recategorize many civil service jobs as political appointees, meaning they would be tied to the specific agenda of an administration rather than viewed as career government workers. The order would essentially allow for certain career civil servants to be removed in favor of Trump loyalists by classifying them as political appointees, a key part of the Project 2025 plan for remaking the government.
“I think on the tech side, the concern is potentially the use of AI to try and engage in large-scale searches of people's job descriptions to try and identify who would be identified for Schedule F reclassification,” says Moynihan.
Other top political appointees include McLaurine Pinover, a former communications director for Republican congressman Joe Wilson and deputy communications director for Republican congressman Michael McCaul, and Joanna Wischer, a Trump campaign speechwriter.
“OPM is not a very politicized organization,” says Steven Kelman, a professor emeritus at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. “My guess is that typically, in the past, there have been only one or maybe two political appointees in all of OPM. All the rest are career. So this seems like a very political heavy presence in an organization that is not very political.”
Another OPM memo, concerning the government’s new return-to-office mandate, appears, according to metadata, also to have been authored by someone other than Ezell: James Sherk, previously at the America First Policy Institute and author of an op-ed advocating for the president to be able to fire bureaucrats. Formerly a special assistant to the president during Trump’s first term, he is now a part of the White House Domestic Policy Council.
The return-to-office policy, according to the November Wall Street Journal op-ed authored by Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, is explicitly geared toward forcing the attrition of federal employees.
Last week, many federal workers received test emails from the email address [email protected]. In a lawsuit filed last night, plaintiffs allege that a new email list started by the Trump administration may be compromising the data of federal employees.
“At a broadest level, the concern is that technologists are playing a role to monitor employees and to target those who will be downsized,” says Moynihan. “It is difficult in the federal government to actually evaluate who is performing well or performing poorly. So doing it on some sort of mass automated scale where you think using some sort of data analysis or AI would automate that process, I think, is an invitation to make errors.”
Last week, federal employees across the government received emails encouraging them to turn in colleagues who they believed to be working on diversity, equity, inclusion, and access initiatives (DEIA) to the OPM via the email address [email protected].
“This reminded me,” says Kelman, “of the Soviet Stalinism of turning in your friends to the government.”
The OPM did not immediately respond to a request for comment, nor did the people whom sources say now sit atop the bureaucracy.
“I am not an alarmist person,” says Kelman. “I do think that some of the things being described here are very troubling.”

Extended credits for Museum at Tomorrow episode 5
Below the cut are all of the folks who I used (and asked to be credited) for recordings in Museum at Tomorrow episode 5- specifically, the "This is not for You" recordings.
(The list was too long for podcast episode descriptions)
These recordings were mixed into the soundscape of the show, heavily processed- so you may or may not be able to pick out your voice. Each unique recording is preserved as rhythem, timber, and shape within the episode.
Thank you for your work in creating the canvas of this piece.

Charlotte, now the Countess of Wrexford, would like nothing more than a summer of peace and quiet with her new husband and their unconventional family and friends. Still, some social obligations must be honored, especially with the grand Peace Celebrations unfolding throughout London to honor victory over Napoleon. But when Wrexford and their two young wards, Raven and Hawk, discover a body floating in Hyde Park’s famous lake, that newfound peace looks to be at risk. The late Jeremiah Willis was the engineering genius behind a new design for a top-secret weapon, and the prototype is missing from the Royal Armory’s laboratory. Wrexford is tasked with retrieving it before it falls into the wrong hands. But there are unsettling complications to the case—including a family connection. Soon, old secrets are tangling with new betrayals, and as Charlotte and Wrexford spin through a web of international intrigue and sumptuous parties, they must race against time to save their loved ones from harm—and keep the weapon from igniting a new war . . . Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute’s 2021 Met Gala has arrived.
Tumblr media
Today was the first part of a two-part exhibition: tonight’s theme is  In America: A Lexicon of Fashion and May 2022′s theme is In America: An Anthology of Fashion.
Here is how Andrew Bolton, curator of the Costume Institute and partner of designer Thom Browne has to say about the two themes.
American fashion has traditionally been described through the language of sportswear and ready-to-wear, emphasizing principles of simplicity, practicality, functionality, and egalitarianism.  Generally denied the emotional rhetoric applied to European fashion, American fashion has evolved a vernacular that tends to sit in direct opposition to that of the haute couture. Part One of In America addresses this linguistic imbalance by presenting a revised vocabulary of American fashion based on its expressive qualities. Part Two will further investigate the evolving language of American fashion through a series of collaborations with American film directors who will visualize the unfinished stories inherent in The Met’s period rooms.”
The exhibition is broken up in sections: “Nostalgia,” “Belonging,” “Delight,” “Joy,” “Wonder,” “Affinity,” “Confidence,” “Strength,” “Desire,” “Assurance,” “Comfort,” and “Consciousness.”
With that in mind, did people meet the theme?
Tumblr media
Who wore it best or worst?
Here be fashion.
With a theme and exhibition of America at its center one would expect a run of fashion by American designers on display. Designer Christian Siriano was surprised that wasn’t so.
Tumblr media
Siriano’s design, worn by Riverdale’s Lili Reinhart was well thought out - the state flower for each state.
Tumblr media
When I first read the theme I conflated it with “Americana”, so I really thought there would be modern takes on fashion through ages.  I was surprised that wasn’t the case.  As much as many actors did homages to Old Hollywood, I expected homages to designers like Halston, Bill Blass, Bob Mackie, Donna Karan, L. Wren Scott, Isaac Mizrahi or Todd Oldham - designers who epitomized a moment in time in fashion. Instead it seems that attendees went with the very American stance of “Eff what you say, I’m gonna do what I want.”
Like, what is this Shawn Mendes? I’m going to be generous and assume Camila Cabello is doing an homage to Cher.
Tumblr media
Actual homages/reference points?
Gemma Chan (in  Prabal Gurung) channeling Anna May Wong
Tumblr media
I truly believe Chan’s beau Dominic Cooper dates fascinating and gorgeous women like Amanda Seyfried, Ruth Negga and now Chan just so he can get invited to the Met Gala.
Tumblr media
grown-ish’s Yara Shahidi (in Dior) in an homage to Josephine Baker

Emily Blunt (in Miu Miu) in an homage to Hedy Lamarr

Co-Chair Amanda Gorman (in Vera Wang) in an homage to The Statue of Liberty

Tumblr media
Which squad did it best?
Team Tory Burch represented by SNL’s Chloe Fineman and Mindy Kaling?

Team Thom Browne represented by Amandla Stenberg, Pete Davidson, Lil Uzi Vert, Erykah Badu, Lee Pace, MJ Rodriguez and Gossip Girl’s Evan Mock?

Team Balenciaga: Tracee Ellis Ross, Kim Kardashian, Elliott Page, Michaela Coel and the queen Rihanna (the only one who adhered to the theme! She looks like a flapper or a mob moll).
Rules still apply.

I give points to Rihanna’s beau A$ap Rocky because there’s nothing more Americana than an old granny quilt.

Black Lives Matter: A Reading List
On this blog, we believe Black Lives Matter. I’ve been quiet here because I’ve just been absorbing and listening and loud on other platforms. But I wanted to take the time and share some books by Black authors that may not be on your radar, books besides The Hate U Give and Dear Martin and Children of Blood and Bone (though I hope you’re reading those too, you’ve probably heard of them at this point). It also won’t just be books about Black pain because Black people have a huge range of experiences and they all deserve to be heard.
All the links in this post will go to Mahogany Books, a Black owned bookstore in Washington, D.C. that does ship. If I can’t find it on their website, the link will go to Semicolon Bookstore, another Black owned indie bookstore, this one located in Chicago’s, Bookshop page. Please note that many books are currently backordered because there’s a huge rush on books by Black authors (especially anti-racist books) right now and there was already a paper shortage and delays in printing because of COVID-19. If that’s the case, check your local library’s digital resources or check other bookstores since they all have varying stock.

This isn’t a complete list and I probably missed a bunch - especially since this list is very focused on mainstream publishing. I also added a few books that aren’t out yet, but are coming out this summer. But this is a starting place for whatever kind of YA book you want to read.

Note
Could you please tell us a little about Elliott Smith and what you love about him?
Who?
Just kidding.
I'm having to dust off the Elliott shelf, it's been a while since I was really in the headspace and not just playing a few songs here and there (by which I mostly mean playing Kings Crossing, the Biggest Lie and Last Call on my laptop and on my guitar over and over again). I've been a fan for about... Ten years I think? Don't ask me about his death you know for a fact I have a strong opinion.
If you aren't sure if you've heard his music you probably have. Most likely Miss Misery (Good Will Hunting) or Between the Bars (Rick and Morty I'm pretty sure it was in?). There is also a Sad Kermit the frog rendition of Needle In The Hay which. Exists. And is based in the Royal Tenenbaums version because that's what it was in.
The thing I like most about him is that he... Couldn't sing. It's the truth, he was not a good singer, but it fits the music completely. It wouldn't work without it, the same way early Rammstein and the Dresden Dolls wouldn't work if they were Technically Good singers. He sounds like a spiderweb. He sounds like the texture of moss. He sounds like he has a really bad cold always, and I'm talking about when he was at his best. It's perfect.
Plus, his lyrics and guitar and piano playing make up for it.
I have this thing where I don't like similarity? If I can't immediately tell if it's X band or Y, no thanks. You can't mistake Rammstein or Elliott Smith or The Dresden Dolls for anyone else. I've never heard music like his. You can hear influences like you can with anyone, but with Elliott you can literally hear one chord and it's obvious it's him.
He was an incredibly shy and intelligent person: He always said he was the worst kind of person to be a famous musician. There are a lot of interesting and uncomfortable interviews online and there's a documentary called Heaven Adores You that I recommend.
He's one of those musicians whose fanbase is 90% people who say his music saved their life, you know? It's very personal music to people, usually.
This Rammstein Thing isn't how I usually go about musicians, I only know so much about Amanda Palmer/the Dresden Dolls because she's an incredibly open person, I'm on the patreon and mailing list, and I've been a fan since 2009. I am not, nor have I tried to be, an encyclopaedia of Elliott Knowledge. Just to be clear.
I do however have every recording I could find downloaded. That's the one good thing about a musician being dead: it's easier to download All The Things. Lots of live shows and demos and all that. I prefer live versions a lot of his songs even though they do sound way worse usually because he was fucked up most of the time, I don't know why.

omg amanda i feel like i never ask u any questions i feel like i don’t know anything abt u so.... what’s ur fave color, movie and food. also who is your fav in bts /what’s are ur favorite kpop groups/musical artist ??🤔 and thoughts on ariana grande ??
joy :-( wow we love mutual curiosity. but!
my favorite colors are blue and yellow
im actually not a movie person believe it or not, but I think my favorite movie rn is dyoukuusei! i watched it today and it was really cute. All time favorite is probably spirited away or my friend totoro
my favorite food is spaghetti but without the meat (i get tired of meat altogether at times)
my first bias in bts was taehyung, then taehyung and hoseok, then just hoseok; he eventually became my ult. Now, im not really a fan of bts but i play 134340 and their older songs from time to time
my favorite korean artists are: twice, gfriend, yubin, sunmi, chungha, loona, IOI (rip), wjsn, red velvet, fromis_9, itzy (when they debut),clc, f(x), exid, gugudan, april, nct, seventeen, wayv, astro, n.flying, exo, crush, sumin, hoody, sam kim, kwon jin ah, jinbo, colde, loco, dpr (im still getting into them)
nonkorean: beyonce, ariana (shes on thin ice rn), brent faiyaz, noname, swv, xscape, brandy, teedra moses, amerie, missy elliott, jazmine sullivan, pharrell (really N.E.R.D.) 112, sunset rollercoaster, amine, rico nasty, megan thee stallion, lil kim, the internet, brian mcknight, mariah carey, destiny’s child, mary j. blige, boyz II men, usher (his older music), raveena, mac demarco, local natives, beach fossils, real estate…etc sidjf
I saw ariana back in 2013 right before she released yours truly and to watch her grow into everything she is today is rewarding as a fan, but lately she has just become a LOT iasjf like i get it, you gotta stay on top but you can do all of that without the exaggeration and basically becoming like every other white person who gets a taste of black culture on social media. She’s been through a lot mentally, physically, and emotionally and it is something that everyone acknowledges, but whatever persona shes molding herself to be just isn’t it. thank you for asking me stuff tho ;-( 💗💕

Nova Scotia woman living with chronic illness leaves province for help due to long waits
A Nova Scotia woman who believed she needed a colonoscopy and couldn’t wait months on a list has left the province for the procedure.
For nearly two months, Crohn’s patient Amanda Rafuse suspected something was wrong.
"I’ve been bleeding, and having no bowel movements. That is not normal for anyone and when you have Crohn’s that’s not normal," she said.
As her gastrointestinal issues worsened, so did her worries.
Rafuse wanted a colonoscopy but says the office of the G.I. specialist she had for nearly 10 years told her in order to be seen, she would need another referral as her last appointment was more than a year ago.
She added getting in to see her family doctor would also take weeks.
During the first of her three trips to the emergency department this past month, she received an X-ray which showed there was no blockage but she still had concerns she wanted to rule out.
She said while admitted to the emergency department, she was told the wait for a colonoscopy could be four to six months or even a year.
This week she went back to emergency, but after waiting five hours in Halifax without being seen and then driving to Bridgewater to wait another five hours only to not be seen, she went home.
Fed up and in pain, she decided to fly to Montreal to a private clinic.
"I basically have to self-advocate, right, because I know that this is an issue and there’s something wrong so I know that I need it, I need it right now. I can’t wait six months because it could be something serious," Rafuse said.
She said the cost of the colonoscopy will be at least $1,600 plus the expenses that come with a flight and hotel.
She posted about her problem and the reaction from others revealed there are many more in similar situations.
"The system is broken," Rafuse said. "I feel like when I was in the ER the nurse made a comment that kind of stuck with me. She said, 'We used to be the last resort but now we’re the first resort.'"
Nova Scotia Health spokesperson Brendan Elliott said Nova Scotia Health empathizes with anyone seeking care for a chronic medical condition.
"We can’t comment on individual patient cases however, we want to reassure the public that urgent care continues to be available in Nova Scotia to those who need it," Elliott said. "We encourage the patient to be in touch with our patient relations service."
Crohn’s and Colitis Canada Spokesperson Angie Specic said access to care in Nova Scotia has had a number of challenges, many of which have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and a shortage of primary care clinicians.
"Access to primary care clinicians, urgent care, specialist care, as well as medical procedures and tests is clearly a challenge for many Nova Scotians," Specic said. "Unfortunately, colonoscopy is one of those procedures experiencing long wait times"
The Houston government campaigned on a promise to fix healthcare.
"I think the system is under incredible strain. I think our healthcare workers are under incredible strain as well,” said Nova Scotia’s Minister of Health and Wellness Michelle Thompson.
Thompson notes work is underway to streamline referrals.
"A single entry access point so that primary care providers have one place where you refer," she said.
The opposition has concerns about the government’s record on healthcare.
"When there was 60,000 people on the need the doctor registry, the premier said there’s a crisis. Now that there’s almost 120,000, we’ve almost doubled that amount, he’s saying the work they’re doing in healthcare is remarkable," said Zach Churchill, the leader of Nova Scotia’s Liberal Party.
"Every time you hear of a story of someone who paid to go and receive healthcare, what I think of are the hundreds of people who cannot afford to go receive healthcare," said Claudia Chender, the leader of Nova Scotia’s New Democratic Party.
Rafuse is scheduled to get her colonoscopy Friday morning in Montreal -- two days after she booked it.
Crohn’s and Colitis Canada commended the patient for raising awareness.

A/N: The prompt, OC Amanda and the reasoning behind these two arguing is all because of the bff @alj4890 👀😂 May C listen to you more than the GPS 😅
A short drabble for these two crazies 💗
Tumblr media
“Idiot,” Amanda mutters under her breath.
Elliott looks over to his passenger, unsure if she was referring to him or another driver. He thought it was best not to ask, noticing the effort she was putting into staring out of the car window.
He places his hand on her knee and smirks at her attempt at shifting from his touch.
“I love you,” he reminds her.
“...I know,” Amanda mumbled, continuing to give the cold shoulder.
Several minutes pass in silence as Elliott maneuvers the streets of New York City and Amanda keeps her body turned away from him.
“Want to play a game?”
“No,” Amanda replies firmly.
“It’ll make the drive go by faster,” he argues.
“So would following my directions instead of your stupid GPS,” Amanda shot back.
“Touché,” Elliott grimaces at her words.
Several more minutes pass without either one of them making a sound.
“Truth or Dare?,” Elliott makes another attempt at breaking the tension.
“Aaaamaaannndaaahhh,” he crooned.
She folds her arms across her chest, determined to keep an eye on the sights of New York City despite the efforts of the irritating driver.
Amanda suddenly feels a finger in her ear causing her to jump in the seat and swatting at Elliott’s hand.
“Stop!”
“Pick one,” he goaded as he began to poke her side.
“You’re being ridiculously childish,” she tells him, pushing his hand away.
“Come on. Pick one.”
“Fine!,” she exasperated. “Truth!”
A sly grin came across his lips as he looked over at her.
“Do you want to kiss me?”
Amanda groaned.
“Dare.”
Elliott’s grin widened.
“I dare you to kiss me.”
“I’m not doing either of those,” she began to look out of the car window once again when she felt the car begin to slow down.
Amanda turns just in time to see Elliott shift the car into park.
Her eyes widened.
“You can’t park here Elliott! We’re on a busy street!,” she shrieked.
Elliott shrugged off her concern and sat back in his seat.
“Are you going to do the dare?,” he asks with an air of confidence.
“You can’t be serious, Elliott,” Amanda slumps in her seat, hiding from the onset of blaring horns. “You need to move!”
Elliott rolls his window down and waves to the trapped drivers in their cars.
Amanda grimaces at the threats being shouted at them.
“Move, you idiot!”
“I’m waiting for my beautiful fianceé to kiss me!,” he yells out, his voice competing with the sounds of New York City traffic.
“Elliott!,” Amanda quickly covers his mouth with her hand.
“Kiss him already, lady!”
“We ain’t got all day!”
“If you don’t kiss him, I will!”
Amanda can’t help the laugh that comes to her as drivers continue crying out in support to follow through with the dare.
“So how about that kiss, Duchess?,” Elliott asks just as Amanda begins to close the distance between them.

Tumblr media
We’ve rounded up the Super Bowl LIV commercials that featured your YBF faves, including John Legend & Chrissy Teigen, Taraji P. Henson, Tracee Ellis Ross, Lil Nas X, H.E.R., Missy Elliott, Megan Thee Stallion and Alice Marie Johnson – the great-grandmother who Donald Trump granted her clemency. See the multi-million dollar ads inside…
Some people watch the Super Bowl for the game while others watch the Super Bowl for the commercials!
Each year, a 30-second commercial spot continues to climb and this year was no different. According to AdAge, brands had to cough up $5.6 million for a 30-second spot during Super Bowl LIV.
Couple John Legend & Chrissy Teigen won the Super Bowl car commercial award for their party throwing antics in Genesis' ad spot for the GV80 SUV. The "sexiest man alive" comment was cute.

Sabra Dipping Co. aired its first Super Bowl commercial and they rounded up a slew of celebs for their debut, including YBFers Megan Thee Stallion, T-Pain, Jaleel White, and Mel B. aka Scary Spice, along with wrestler Ric Flair, drag queens Miz Cracker and Kim Chi, influencers Amanda Cerny, Tway Nguyen, Doug the Pug and Zachary King, former NFL quarterback Boomer Esiason, first-ever Fortnite World Cup Solo Champion Kyle Giersdorf, singer Becky G, TikTok star Charli D’Amelio, Brittany Tomlinson aka Kombucha Girl, and “RHONJ” rivals Teresa Giudice and Caroline Manzo.

Raiders running back rookie Josh Jacobs starred in a Super Bowl ad spot for Kia’s new Seltos SUV. Kia announced it will donate $1,000 for every yard gained in Super Bowl LIV to three charitable groups involved in youth homelessness, including Covenant House, Positive Tomorrows and StandUp for Kids. Nice!

Also, Kia produced a short documentary about the former Alabama standout with his father about his life growing up in Tulsa. You can check it out here.
Former Boston Red Sox player David "Big Papi" Ortiz has recovered after he was shot in the back in his native Dominican Republic last summer. He appeared in a spot for Hyundai alongside Boston native Rachel Dratch.

Two Super Bowls ago I was sitting in a prison cell.
Today I am a free woman and my story was featured in a Super Bowl Ad.
I will spend the rest of my life fighting for the wrongly and unjustly convicted!

Trump used Alice Marie Johnson - the great-grandmother he granted clemency to after she served 21 years in prison for a nonviolent drug offense (with help from Kim Kardashian West) - in his 2020 reelection campaign. Of course.
“Alice Johnson was sentenced to serve life in prison for a nonviolent drug offense,” the commercial read. “Thanks to President Trump people like Alice are getting a second chance. Politicians talk about criminal justice reform. President Trump got it done. Thousands of families are being reunited.”
"Two Super Bowls ago I was sitting in a prison cell," Alice tweeted. "Today I am a free woman and my story was featured in a Super Bowl Ad. I will spend the rest of my life fighting for the wrongly and unjustly convicted! God Bless America!"
"I promised to restore hope in America. That includes the least among us. Together, let’s KEEP AMERICA GREAT!," Trump tweeted.
