He was almost too late -- almost -- having gotten off of work much later than intended and suddenly finding himself in desperate need of something to take the edge off. Usually that would come in the form of a beer bottle and a cigarette, but considering he had work in the morning and didn't want to be listening to toddler heartbeats with a wicked hangover, he decided a good ol' fashioned Indica was his next best option. He waved down one of the budtenders before they closed up, placing a hand on the door so that they couldn't close it in his face.

"Relax, I’m not here to rob you. I just want a cart." Sammy explained curtly, a vexed expression crossed his features when the worker wouldn't let up. "Yeah, no, I get that you're closing -- that's great. But while I'm here I might as well grab a cart. You know?" He glanced inside the dispensary, locking eyes with Ella. "Does he get a raise or something if he turns enough paying customers away? Seems bad for business."

"Hey now, all's I asked was if you were up for a hike -- you're the one who said yes without requesting more details," he pointed out. Honestly, though, he was just happy that they actually agreed to hang in the first place, whether or not they actually enjoyed the idea of hiking or not. After living in Tonopah Valley for the past seven months, Malcolm finally felt like he was finding his footing with friends like Ella, who was nice enough to indulge him with their presence regularly. Not to mention, they were far too cool to be friends with him in the first place, so he felt extra lucky in that regard. "Aren't we already serious bros? That's the impression I was under anyway," he tossed back, albeit somewhat bashfully. "Yeah, that sounds good. I'm always down for some video games or just hanging out somewhere downtown." Malcolm was sober, but he didn't have issues being around people who drank. It was more so when it came to other illicit substances. "You goin' to that gala party, by the way? Not really my type'a thing but I heard the food's gonna be bomb."

"You have to say that. You brought me out here. Half a mile?! Jesus, I should've worn my heely's," they joked, giggling themselves a bit as they thought about it. That would've been something. Ella's sisters had always tried to get them to do more outdoors things together but Ella usually stuck to skateboarding being their most outdoor activity. Or driving to a nice spot to smoke. But exerting this much energy anywhere but the gym took some special encouragement. Though, since their involvement with the Enterprise, they had really started to try to hit the gym more. To stay ready for whatever the fuck could come their way. "You want me to come to the gym with you? Are we becoming serious bros here? I can't say I hate it." They wiped their face and dug out some trail mix from their bag, feeling a bit more ready to finish the hike. "I might, yeah, I was gonna cut out from the lounge early. Wanted to do something that wasn't boring. But we could also just hang out and play some video games or something."

Ella couldn't recall the last time she'd been at a nightclub. It certainly wasn't a luxury she could afford as a single mother of two, nor was she interested in it anyway. The sole reason she was here tonight was the text. Glancing at the crowd, she wondered how many of them were also here because of it. Out of curiosity who the anonymous sender was or out of fear by their threats. Gesturing at the bartender to pour her another shot, a sudden movement to her left caught her attention. "My brother certainly knows how to drown his sorrow, right?"

to  read  about  something  was  one  thing,  but  to  see  something  you've  read  about  as  a  child  come  true  was  quite  ..jarring,  in  a  way.  maybe  liberating,  too  -  up  to  some  point,  but  mostly  just  jarring,  because  reality  never  exceeded  expectations.  quite  the  opposite,  reality  often  fell  short.  in  this  case,  he  was  less  eager  than  usual  to  witness  it  for  the  sole  sake  of  ...  not  wanting  to  be  disappointed.  but  kit  went  &  he  felt  the  urge  to  accompany  his  fiancé.  what  would  people  think�� if  he  didn't?  probably  nothing,  but  still  -  he  wouldn't  risk  that.

but  it  was  too  crowded,  too  social,  the  pressure  simply  was  ...  too  much.  he  held  &  he  held,  but  at  some  point  he  couldn't  anymore.  he  bolted  &  went  to  find  some  place  safe.  some  place  familiar.  surely  nobody  would  mind  him  exploring  the  library,  right?  he  was  surprised  there  even  was  one  here,  but  then  again...  where  there's  people,  there's  books,  right?

after  letting  himself  inside,  strolling  through  the  many  shelves,  fingers  running  over  the  backs  of  a-many  books  in  his  search,  he  finally  found  something  that  called  to  him.  the  peace  &  quiet  in  here  was  ...  better.  he  enjoyed  it  greatly.  it  wouldn't  have  to  be  long.  he  just  needed  to  recharge  a  little  bit.  book  clasped  in-between  fingers,  ella  went  searching  for  a  comfortable,  secluded  place  to  sit  ...  only  to  find  someone  else  already  here.  "oh."  glancing  around  to  see  if  it  was  just  them,  or  if  he  missed  someone  else's  presence  in  here,  he  shot  the  man  a  little  smile.  "you  uh...  you  mind  if  i..?"  motioning  at  the  seat  next  to  the  man,  shoulders  pulled  into  a  little  shrug.

When she came across Ella, she offered the other woman a bright smile and a wave of her hand. "Got any clear favorites yet?"

No one enjoys having to work with someone else on any kind of project, but Jasper doesn't mind so much when they're given the choice to choose. Their classmates get up, beginning to partner up, and he beelines towards the only person in the room he's interested in working with. The seat in front of her is free and empty, so he sinks into it. Turning towards her in the seat, he lets his arm rest against the back of the chair. He taps her desk with a single knuckle to get her attention. "So I was thinking we should partner up," he says, adorning a charming smile. "It'd be an easy A for us if we do."

"You're right," Lena returned the sentiment with a bright smile. "I know it sounds super cliche, but I truly believe that you walk with a little bounce to your step and a song in your heart when the sun is out." Maybe she was being overly optimistic, but there was just something about that time of year that made everything a little bit better in her book. "It is perfect sack out and read a book weather! I do that a lot on rainy, snowy days, too, curl up in the sun room with a blanket around my shoulders and a cup of tea… but I like it even more on the beach with a frozen lemonade, you know?" When Ella asked about her plans, she see-sawed her head thoughtfully, "no big plans, other than just enjoying it. Working on my garden, too. Planting some flowers, the usual. Lots and lots of beach days. I'd like to learn how to fish -- I haven't been in years, so I feel like I probably forget how."

Ella loved the sunny weather, she was always smiling in this weather and it made everything better for her. She smiled over at the girl for a brief moment, "Sunshine just makes anyone happy I choose to believe." She laughed a little looking over at the girl, "I am very excited for more beach days, to just relax and get lost in my own thoughts or a book at the beach. I swear i read more in summer than anytime in the year." She also knew summer meant the hotel got slightly busier but she did love it when it was busy it just had a better atmosphere there and they could do more events. "Do you have any plans for summer or just enjoying the spring at the moment?"

"What's wrong with you?" Ella wasn't sure who her question was addressed to. Probably both, considering this wasn't the time, nor place for both man to be settling whatever feud they had. Certainly not the way, too. There were already people gathered — some just to be witnesses of the spectacle, the more sensible ones trying to break off the fight. Her stomach twisted at the sight of his face covered in blood. "Enough, Nico." Ella grabbed him by the wrist before he attempted to throw another punch, then pushed him back. "Come on." With a single glance back at the scene, she started walking away while pulling her brother with her.

- if you're on a road trip or if you're waiting at a doctor's appointment , remember that your phone isn't your last resort ! for entertainment , try and look outside , imagine who has visited the area hundreds of years ago and how much it had changed or if you see any people , imagine their story ! be curious & imaginative !

There was a reason Ella didn't want to come to Babylon in the first place; other than the obvious fact that she didn't see as fitting to honor her dad's memory with a party. But Dante was the one closer to him throughout all these years and their father had always been supportive of his business ventures, so who knows — maybe she was wrong and he might actually like going in such way. Either way, the music was too loud, pulsing in rhythm with her growing headache. Making another step towards either the exit or somewhere quiter, Ella tripped and leaned against the person next to her. "Good," she sighed, recognizing Dante. "I was hoping to talk to you before I head home."

She's only been gone for two years yet it seemed people had easily moved on or made their minds about her. Not that she hasn't made it easier for most to do so either by how her actions had affected those close to her or the way she's pretty much ghosted everybody as if she never had intentions to return. Though never making a fixed plan about the latter, it certainly had seemed that way.

She couldn't blame Gabriel for his snarky remarks about her being a bad mother or not being one at all even, but she's already got her fair share of judgement by one of the Gallo twins on top of her own self-loathe, so if there was a chance she'd gladly pass on the opportunity, which made her turn and make a step away. "Yes, so soon. It seems I made a mistake coming here in the first place, even if I loved Cali and wanted to pay my respect as well as support my family in this moment."

"Holy shit."

Out of all the people Gabriel expected to see tonight, he ranked Ella Blackwell at the very bottom. He should've known better. Nothing reunited a family quite like a death. Sincerely, he thought Ella's cowardness would outweigh her need for condolences. He wasn't happy to see her. God, never that. He wasn't angry on behalf of his brother either. Instead, it was giddy that filled the light in his eyes and widened his lips into a smirk. If Gabriel was one thing, he was a sucker for chaos.

"You know mothers," he began. "Not about being one, obviously, but having one. It doesn't matter what age you are, they love to nag and bitch at you for whatever reason they can muster up." Gabriel shrugged as he flicked his cigarette. "Frankly, I'm in no mood for any of that tonight."

Faux disappointment tainted his expression. "Oh no. Really? So soon?" His tone matched his eyes. "We didn't even get a chance to catch up. You know I'm dying to know where you've been hiding all this time."

The Resemblance Is Uncanny: Patty Newby and The Uncanny Valley

So, in TFS, we get this dialogue, where Patty talks about the idea of Ella FItzgerald being her mother:

And this line haunts me because of the Uncanny Valley Effect- which is an unsettling feeling that people get when they see something that isn’t-quite-human/looks almost human but isn’t quite right, such as certain types of robots, 3D models, and dolls.

The core idea was that as robots appear more humanlike, they become more appealing to people- but only up to a certain point. At that point, you enter the “uncanny valley,” where those previously positive reactions turn into fear and unease.

(Which, the idea of dolls triggering the uncanny valley effect is interesting considering all of the doll imagery in ST, and what I talked about in this post re: Patty, Patty's mom, and the little music box dolls.)

And so, looking back at that line from Patty re: how her resemblance to her mom/in the case of this joke, Ella Fitzgerald, is “uncanny,” I think that this line is referencing the uncanny valley effect in relation to Patty, especially since later on, during the bathroom scene, we get a LITERAL uncanny valley Patty- she comes in and her hair looks slightly weird, and her movements/mannerisms are slightly weird, and she just feels wrong. She literally triggers the uncanny valley effect, the change is a lot more obvious when you actually watch the play compared to screenshots:

(And then she starts ripping out her own hair, and ends up all weird and zombified/she becomes literally not human-looking anymore)

The initial/non-zombified, uncanny valley effect-inducing vision version of Patty with the weird hair and weird mannerisms makes me think of the weird version of 001 that we see during the NINA sleepyhead scene, where his hair and mannerisms are weird, and he feels very uncanny/not quite human- it’s not just a case of him looking and acting different from the other version of 001, instead, it’s ALSO the fact that the way he looks and acts feels not quite human. Even if he was the ONLY version of 001 that we saw, he would still trigger that uncanny valley effect because there’s something just not quite right about him/he feels “almost human” but not quite:

(not to mention that him and patty have a very similar hand clasp, patty just has a different hand on top) And it also makes me think of the deepfaked 8 year old El we see during NINA, who has a similar uncanny valley-esque look to her (which is extra interesting considering Patty's constant El parallels), which also makes me think about the weird NINA/simulation vibes in TFS, and the idea of deepfaking within TFS/stuff like what I talked about in this post re: TFS, Patty and The Matrix and people appearing not quite right and Agent Smith looking human for the most part but not being human/feeling slightly wrong in an uncanny valley way:

And also, on the note of NINA, going back to what I said in the beginning re: the idea of 3D models causing the uncanny valley effect, I’m staring at all of the miniature/model (see: el’s school project diorama, the dnd miniatures etc) imagery, like I talked about in this post, as well as all of the puppet imagery in ST and TFS and the fact that 3D models are rigged and animated like digital puppets, and I’m wondering if that’s part of all of this too, especially considering the idea that Brenner might be “playing” with various puppets/3D models/artificial versions of people in NINA in order to manipulate El’s perception of events.

And the whole "Patty and the uncanny valley effect/Patty being associated with the idea of things that look human but aren't quite human" thing also makes me think of what I’ce talked about re: the changeling references and the shapeshifter references that surround Patty, such as Miss Mystery versus Mystra from DND, who is a shapeshifter (and Patty's Mystra stuff is a whole separate post/draft on its own), as well as DND Doppelgangers & what I’ve talked about re: those vs the ST “demogorgon”/the idea of certain ST characters actually being doppelgangers in certain scenes/not quite being human because they’re actually a Creature pretending to be human.

Which, the doppelganger thing gets extra interesting considering Patty’s parallels to Barbara Holland versus Nancy seeing a literal Barb doppelganger in S2:

Anyway! Lots to think about. It’s also interesting that Patty specifically says that the resemblance becomes “uncanny” once you “said it out loud,” versus Patty telling Henry to “say it,” during the attic scene and what I talked about in this post re: TFS in general, the attic scene/the “i love you” scene and how it feels like a dream moment for Patty and how it’s specifically henry SAYING “i love you” to Patty that changes things/stops things, rather than the feeling of love, its the “saying it out loud” that makes things stop:

As well as the focus on “you never SAY IT” during Mike and El’s S4 bedroom fight, and all of the TFS references to the idea that something is real if you believe in it/the idea of speaking something into existence, and how the uncanny valley effect is tied to a person’s perception of a robot/doll/creature etc and whether or not they believe that it’s human, which goes back to what I’ve talked about before re: doppelgangers/shapeshifters in ST & not only the idea of other people believing that theyre human, but they themselves truly believing that they’re human & the idea of whether or not that makes them human/“if a doppelganger who has fully taken on the form of a human body truly believes that they’re human, and doesnt know that theyre a doppelganger, and their body is technically completely identical to a human body, then does that make them human?”

Anyway! Again, lots to think about.
