Y’all…I have discovered a book that our fandom would enjoy. It’s called Reluctant Immortals by Gwendolyn Kiste and it’s about Lucy Westenra as the gay vampire we know she is but it takes place some hundred years after Dracula so Mina is dead :(

Summary: Henry likes ghost hunting programs. Victor does not. Henry doesn't care if ghosts are real or not (he'll know when he's dead). Victor very much believes they are not. At all. So much so he's willing to go out on Halloween night to investigate a supposedly haunted asylum with all of the little ghoulish gadgets just to show Henry it's all bullshit.
Victor is stubborn. Henry is smart. Therefore, Henry only agrees to let himself be dragged into this if he can in turn drag Victor to the biggest Halloween party of the year afterwards.
Aberrations and monstrosities ensue!

Halloween Prompt: Harry Potter Crossover with Universal Monsters (or their public domain source material)
Okay, so in this AU Voldemort only managed to make one Horcrux (which was destroyed in second year) and Pettigrew was captured at the end of third year.
Harry now lives with Sirius, who has begun courting the lovely Lucy Westenra, a muggle woman.
The Triwizard Tournament is still hosted by Britain, but instead of Voldemort and his Death Eaters, there's a new secret threat approaching...
Count Dracula has taken up residence in Muggle London and has begun the process of distributing his boxes of Transylvanian soil across multiple safehouses (including Number 13 Grimauld Place).
On his trail is Gabriel Talbot* an immortal man with amnesia and lycanthropy, on a mission as a Hound of God. He can't die until he defeats Dracula, who seems to have a connection to his forgotten past. (*He's a combination of Larry Talbot, unkillable Wolf Man, and Gabriel Van Helsing, long-lived Monster Hunter.)
Meanwhile, Victor Frankenstein (Durmstrang dropout)* is trying to meet up with Albus Dumbledore, seeking alchemical knowledge that could help him succeed in making a female companion for his Creature (who would hopefully spare the rest of the Frankenstein family from his vengeance). Victor's arranged fiancée, Elizabeth Lavenza and their mutual best friend, Henry Clerval, are among Beauxbaton's representatives at the Triwizard Tournament. (*Victor only chose Durmstrang because of their historical connections to alchemy and necromancy.)
Sirius and Remus get mixed up with the Dracula and Talbot plot, while Harry and friends get roped into Frankenstein's mess (maybe Clerval could be the foreign student who likes Hermione). Somehow Luna Lovegood would also be an important factor in getting the two plots to collide... Wait, that's already Sirius and Harry's job. Okay, so maybe Luna would be essential in resolving both plotlines via her knowledge of the Rotfang Conspiracy and her trauma over losing her mother (Pandora Lovegood's experimental spell may also be beneficial to the Creature and his would-be Bride).

I'm generally a fully signed-up member of the Mrs Westenra Sucks Club, but I've found myself pondering more sympathetic ways to interpret her character and actions.
I think the most important thing to remember is that Mrs Westenra is dying, and since she has a 19-year-old daughter, she's probably dying young. If she's around 45, actuarial tables for the 1890s suggest that she would normally expect to live at least another 25 years, probably longer (which I'm mentioning since people normally underestimate Victorian adult life expectancy).
She was expecting to be around to see her daughter securely married and to help with her grandchildren; now there's a question mark over whether she'll even see her daughter's wedding. She's experiencing end-stage heart failure: she's probably in a lot of pain (which in her culture she is supposed to bear with quiet fortitude) and may have other symptoms such as fatigue, depression, nausea, insomnia and cognitive impairment. She's probably not able to think clearly a lot of the time. It's not surprising that she makes some bad decisions.
Is that enough to justify her treatment of Lucy? Maybe not. But on that point, I think it's worth noting that while Mrs Westenra is the worst offender in treating her adult daughter like she's a child, she's not the only one. When Mrs Westenra confides details of her illness to Mina, Mina doesn't seem to push back on the idea that this should be kept a secret from Lucy, even in the privacy of her journal. The idea that things should be kept from Lucy for her own protection is one that nearly everyone who interacts with Lucy shares.
In the novel as it stands (not in deleted sections, admittedly) we also don't see Lucy herself pushing for greater independence. In fact, what she wants from her mother is not more freedom but more comfort, in being allowed to share a bed with her.
A final thought on that. Victorians turned against the idea of bed-sharing because they believed that sharing beds spread diseases:
In her housekeeping guide published in 1892, Mrs. Elizabeth F. Holt warned readers that “the air which surrounds the body under the bed clothing is exceedingly impure, being impregnated with the poisonous substances which have escaped through the pores of the skin.”
(from this article)
In other words, Mrs Westenra might worry that sharing a bed would risk passing on her own illness to Lucy. I think denying Lucy's request could be seen as protective rather than dismissive.
I imagine I'm still going to be really annoyed when she [spoilers redacted]. But I think she could be seen as a tragic and sympathetic figure, not a malicious one. This novel has several characters who want to do the right thing but make mistakes (Seward, Van Helsing) and Mrs Westenra could be interpreted as one of them.

So in Castlevania game lore, the novel Dracula canonically exists, and is apparently just fanfiction or whatever about the ACTUAL Dracula AKA Matthias Cronqvist. But at the same time, Quincey Morris (spelled without an E) did exist and did slay Dracula, and die doing so.
Which begs the question, how inaccurate was Bram Stoker's account of events? Or was it inaccurate at all? Maybe Dracula DID resurrect and do all that to the Harkers and Lucy and whatnot. And Quincey eventually managed to kill him, though not before siring an actual son named John.
I kinda want to see a Castlevania version of the Dracula novel; One compliant to the lore. So obviously the rules for Dracula and vampires is changed a little, and maybe he's not so utterly alone this time, given he's usually attended to by an entire army of monsters. Or maybe this resurrection, Dracula came back weaker than usual and couldn't summon any of the typical lackeys like Medusa or Death. Maybe he DOES have some minions and they just take a backseat in the roles of the peasants Dracula hired.
The fact that Quincey has John means that he must've fallen in love with someone other than Lucy; So maybe he never proposed to her, or he had a one-night stand sometime between the rejection, and his blood donation. We also know there was a Lucy Seward in Castlevania canon, who was Eric Lecarde's fiancee until Elizabeth Bartley (Erzsebet Bathory) turned her into a vampire and Eric had to mercy-kill her.
This is obviously conflicting with Lucy Westenra and how her story went... And given Eric's own age in the timeline, I wonder if this could be reconciled with the revelation that after Quincey's death, Jack Seward had a daughter he named Lucy in honor of his lost loved one, only for her to tragically suffer the exact same fate, whoops I think I tempted fate right there.
There's also Castlevania Netflix's continuity, which definitely can't use Dracula as the villain because he took a major chill pill at the end of the first series. Now I'm kinda curious to see Castlevania Netflix actually adapt Quincey Morris' story, and it's blatantly the novel Dracula but with a few changes here or there to be canon-compliant; In particular, Dracula is replaced with another vampire who is identical in all but name and maybe appearance.
Because wouldn't it be funny if we got Quincey's story for either the game or show continuities of Castlevania, and despite the lore changes, it unironically ended up being a more accurate Dracula adaptation than all of the other actual Dracula adaptations??? I say this because the Castlevania games kinda get the meaning and sentiments of the novel better than the proper adaptations, somehow.
