Who are the hostages still held by Hamas?
On October 7, 2023, 253 Israelis and foreign nationals were kidnapped to Gaza by Hamas and gazan civilians. Since then, 105 were released in a prisioner exchange deal, 4 were released by Hamas and 3 were rescued.
However, 60 remain in captivity [as of 02/09/24] (4 of those were kidnapped prior to 2023). A recent investigation has concluded that more than a fifth of the hostages are dead and the fate of some other hostages remains unknown. This video explains how doctors determine which hostages are dead, based on the nature of their injury and by analyising footage and the victims' last phone calls. Additionally, during the operation in Gaza, the IDF has recovered the bodies of a few victims and returned to their families for burial.
Since I couldn't find this all in one place, I've compiled a list of: 1) hostages who are presumed alive; 2) hostaged whose death has been reported/confirmed; 3) hostages who were released or rescued. In the group of hostages presumed to be alive who haven't been released, the youngest is 1-year-old Kfir Bibas and the oldest hostage is Iraqi-born 85-year old Shlomo Mansour.
As we learn more information, I'll continue to update this post.
They need to come back home. I'm hoping for more successful rescue operations soon. Keep them in your thoughts.

Freed hostages warn renewed Gaza fighting risks lives of remaining Hamas captives
Freed hostages Yarden Bibas, Eliya Cohen and Omer Wenkert write on social media about the fears and trepidation they’re experiencing since Israel ended the ceasefire with Hamas and restarted strikes on Gaza early Tuesday morning. “Israel’s decision to return to fighting brings me back to Gaza, to the moments where I heard the sounds of explosions around me and where I feared for my life as I was afraid that the tunnel where I was being held would collapse,” Bibas writes in English on social media. “My wife and children were kidnapped alive and were brutally murdered in captivity. The military pressure endangers the hostages while an agreement brings them home.” Bibas shares an old photo of himself with longtime friends David Cunio and Ariel Cunio, brothers from Kibbutz Nir Oz who are still held hostage in Gaza. “I am petrified for my best friends, David and Ariel Cunio,” he says. “I lost my Shiri, Ariel and Kfir, but David can still return alive to Sharon, Emma and Yuli and Ariel to his partner Arbel Yehud and his family.” Eliya Cohen says that since hearing about strikes on Gaza, he has can’t manage to sit still. “My brother, Alon Ohel, is wrapped in bicycle chains with chains on his legs, and eats one pita with mold and two spoons of fava beans each day,” writes Cohen, referring to hostage Alon Ohel, who was left behind in the Gazan tunnels when Cohen, Or Levy and Eli Sharabi were freed last month, during the first stage of the hostage release-ceasefire deal. “It’s just impossible to grasp, and there are no words to describe the lack of understanding in our country about what is taking place 50 meters underground,” says Cohen. “And if there is any understanding, then how to explain this abandonment and lack of attention to human life?” Freed hostage, Omer Wenkert, shares similar thoughts. “Have you listened to a word of what we freed hostages have been telling you? Do you not see us?” writes Wenkert. “This dangerous decision will have an untold effect on those of us who are still held there. And I say ‘on us’ because those who are there are me, and I am them. I’m still there! Until the last hostage is released I am still there!”
#personcole#do you truly stand with the hostages if you are prepared to abandon them to their gruesome deaths?

After 50 days in an apartment, Eli was moved underground, where he met Alon Ohel, Or Levy, and Eliya Cohen. “Alon pierced my heart; I adopted him from the first day. We supported each other. I know everything about him – his family, important dates, the hobbies of his siblings and parents. How can we leave him behind?”
Eli, 53, took it upon himself to help 24-year-old Alon survive. When captors told him he’d be released, “the terrorists tore him from me. He refused to let go. I promised I wouldn’t leave him there, that I would fight for him. I am here for him and the rest of the hostages.”
When captors told Alon he’d be released on February 8, “he turned white as a sheet, understanding he would be there alone.” Eli was released with Ohad Ben Ami and Or Levy.
From the moment he was taken, Eli was in survival mode. Hunger took over everything. “Do you know what it’s like to open a refrigerator? To take out a fruit or an egg or a piece of bread? That’s what you dream about there… your stomach is glued to your back.”
The four debated what to ask for next – a cup of tea, a quarter of pita – and who should ask, depending on the captor. “The humiliation was constant,” he said.
Eli, Or, Alon, and Eliya were moved to a different tunnel, 50 meters underground, with terrible sanitary conditions. They showered once a month with water from a bottle or pail.
Their treatment depended on Israeli leaders’ statements. “They listen all the time. [After] any irresponsible statement, we were the first to feel the consequences.” They were told that Israeli authorities weren’t giving Palestinian prisoners food, so the hostages wouldn’t eat. The same applied to beatings and showers.

ELIYA COHEN’S FIRST TESTIMONY:
• Eliya was chained by the hands and feet. • He was force-fed by Hamas in the weeks leading up to his release, causing him to unsafely and rapidly gain 17 pounds.
• He suffered from deliberate starvation, and Hamas terrorists would eat in front of him while denying him food as a form of torture.
• He returned with severe wounds on his legs and shoulders, along with a limp due to Hamas’ chains and abuse.
• He spent most of his captivity in the tunnels, often in complete darkness, alongside Or Levi, Alon Ohel, and Eli Sharabi.
• He was completely cut off from the outside world and had no idea if his partner, Ziv Aboud, had survived the “death bunker.”
Eliya endured a nightmare so horrific that no horror movie could capture it, yet Hamas made it his reality for 505 days.
63 hostages are still in Gaza. We won’t stop fighting until every single one of them is home.

Alon Ohel's family has finally learned that he's alive, but injured in Gaza. He'll turn 24 on February 10 and it'll be his second birthday spent in captivity.
Last year, his mom Idit wrote about her fight to bring him home.
"My son Alon lives in an apartment in Tel Aviv with his friends. It’s not fancy, but it’s charming and warm; sometimes his little brother, Ronen, will stay there if he doesn’t want to make the journey late at night to our home north of Haifa. For more than a decade Alon has played piano, and he has an acceptance letter to Rimon School of Music. He loves to grill, but always complains to his dad that ours doesn’t work, so we bought a brand-new one a few months ago. For his twenty-third birthday this past February, everyone from around our small community came together to play music and eat hot dogs, his favorite. It’s a pretty good life.
The only problem is that my son is missing from it. We haven’t seen him for a year.
On the morning of October 7, 2023, my son was at the Nova Music Festival. When Hamas terrorists invaded Israel, he hid in a bomb shelter with 27 people. Sixteen of them were murdered. Seven survived after hiding for six hours under a pile of bodies. Four were taken hostage: Or Levy, Eliya Cohen, Hersh Goldberg-Polin, and my son, Alon Ohel. "
