Hermione's arc as a character in books

More I grow up more I realise what a disappointing character Hermione became in the last two books. Rowling ruined her whole character with narrative bias. If only she could let her face consequences for things and she learned from them.. what a great complex character she could have been.

PS- we meet Hermione, a socially awkard bookworm who is quite intelligent and shows she can break rules but most of the time she is obsessed with rules. We see Hermione panicking under pressure. So what flaws Hermione has in the 1st book?

Socially awkward, freezes under pressure, too bossy, rule follower, close minded. A character with strengths and flaws. 9.5/10.

COS- Hermione has a crush on an incompetent teacher. She learns books can be misleading. Looks can be deceiving. Still more competent than most of the teachers and figures out who the slytherin monster is. She is still uptight. But a bit less. Ron's influence is working.

Awesome character. 9/10(.5 deducted away bcz she brews a NEWT level potion. Not impossible. But very unlikely)

POA- narrative bias start but only slightly. Throughout that book Hermione refuses to control her cat and even drops him on Ron's bed despite Ron's warning. But she does apologise to Ron. She hugs him. later scabbers turns out to be Peter. So readers sub consciously side with her even though she is 100% wrong. She goes behind Harry's back and reports the firebolt. But it turns out she is right again. It was sent by Sirius. And Harry and Ron come across as assholes.

Still she helps Sirius to escape with buckbeak. 8.5/10.

GOF- everyone is dying to date an int Quidditch star. Hermione is totally uninterested. But whom does he choose? Hermione!!!! Hermione just use hair potion and wears a pretty dress robes. Bam!! She is the most beautiful person at the ball. Even Draco and pansy, her school bullies are stunned.

Ron comes across as an asshole for not seeing her beauty and treating her terribly. Ron thinks Krum is using her. Hermione thinks Krum is great. AGAIN she is right. Krum has no ill intention. He is the prince charming and treats Hermione with all the respect, kindness. But Hermione rejects him even though he is on the paper is written to be much much much more desirable than her canon love interest. Just show me a single character flaw of Krum(except for having strong affinity towards underage girls) I will be waiting. You can't. Bcz Krum is a plot device to stroke JKR's ego. Yes. Hermione is JKR.

She also stands by Harry's side when Ron and everyone else turns on Harry. She kidnaps Skeeter and puts her in a jar. Kidnaps a human being!! But who does the narrative side with? Her. Bcz Rita is a nasty, vile destructive bitch who needs to learn her lesson.

She also starts to fight against house elf enslavement. But atleast narrative shows her method is all wrong. 6/10.

OOTP- Hermione is lot less uptight now. Good character development. She is also socially less awkward. She arranges DA meetings. She meets new ppl and she hardly ever loses patience with Harry when he is shouting at her and Ron 24/7. She is a lot snipy towards Ron in this book idk why. May be she hates that she is falling in love with him when he seems to vibe in his own world.

She scars a girl's face. Who does the narrative side with? Her. Bcz Marietta is a snitch.

She tells Harry voldy is trying to trap him. And she is right. As usual. Sirius dies bcz of Harry's idiocy. She also knits hats and tries to force them on elves. But again narrative shows that her method is wrong. 7/10.

HBP- the limit of bias. She attacks Ron with birds for dating lav. But who does get the blame? RON. The passage ends with 'Harry thought he heard a sob'. That means forget that Hermione attacked Ron with birds. Forget that Ron is in pain. Hermione is crying. She is the victim. Feel for her. Not him.

She laughs 'unkindly' at his moustache. Ron mocks her back. She starts crying. Who does Harry side with? Hermione.

And don't get me started on Ron/Lav. While Krum's sole pupose is to show how superior he is to Ron. Lavender's sole purpose is to show why Hermione is superior to her in every way and what an idiot Ron is for not seeing it. Their kissing scenes are written with phrases 'plunger being withdrawn from the sink'

She tells Harry the HBP book is dangerous. Again she is right. Harry almost murders malfoy. But she denies that malfoy is a DE and she is proven wrong afterwards. 3/10. HBP is my least favourite book.

DH- she does the 90% work during their camping trip. She rescues them from Lovegood's house. She rescues them from the ministry. So now she is great under pressure.

She also lies to Bellatrix while being crucioed. She denies Hallows existence. But Harry proves her wrong.

And the most crucial one. Ron breaks under pressure. He leaves. Hermione stays. Again she proves she is 'better' than Ron.

By the end of DH she has little to no flaw. She has overcome most of her flaws she has in PS. 6/10.

This is Hermione's whole arc. She didnt live up to the expectation. She was a much much better character in the 1st 3 books. But the narrative bias hindered her growth by justifying her all wrongdoings. I still love the 1st 3 book Hermione. The latter version is disappointing.

And the less I will talk about that one dimensional mary sue in movies more it will be better.

What about taming a fantastic beast (or several) with the flick of a wand in Paris? Universal Orlando's upcoming theme park, Universal Epic Universe, is set to cast a spell that will turn that fantasy into a reality when its new Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Ministry of Magic land opens in 2025.

Entertainment Weekly has confirmed through a source that franchise star Eddie Redmayne will reprise his Fantastic Beasts role as Newt Scamander in the new land, with his new, already-filmed scenes set to appear throughout. Ministry of Magic is touted as the most elaborate of the planned park's five new themed areas, fusing timelines from the eight main Harry Potter films with the three Fantastic Beasts movies. The narratives will converge on a massive plot of land spanning 1920s Paris and 1990s London as guests travel to and from both destinations using the Métro Floo transportation network to dart back and forth.

Partially set within the British Ministry of Magic, the land's marquee attraction will be Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry, which will take travelers on a first-of-its-kind adventure using new omnidirectional technology that allows ride vehicles to travel through sprawling environments in vessels that move up, down, forward, backward, and sideways along one of the company's "most impressive attractions to date," according to a press release.

The ride's story puts guests on a journey from Paris to the British Ministry of Magic for the trial of Dolores Umbridge (played by Imelda Staunton in the films). Visitors enter through the organization's grand atrium (as seen in the Harry Potter movies) ahead of the trial until things go wrong when Umbridge attempts to escape. Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint), Hermione Granger (Emma Watson), and a house elf named Higgledy eventually accompany riders along the pursuit of Umbridge. (EW has reached out to representatives for Radcliffe, Watson, Grint, and Redmayne for comment on their potential return.)

Outside of the main ride, the Ministry of Magic section will feature a live show, Le Cirque Arcanus, billed as a full-scale theater experience with live performers and aerialists, puppetry, special effects, and fantastic beats appearing throughout the production, which follows Ringmaster Skender after he steals Newt Scamander's suitcase.

Consistent with Universal's other Harry Potter-themed parklands, the Ministry of Magic section includes merchandise locations that sell wands and other franchise materials, namely the focal wand location Cosme Acajor Baguettes Magique. Here, attendees can purchase wands and then use them to interact with fantastic beasts sprinkled throughout the Parisian locale.

Harry Potter characters are also set to roam the land, including exchange students from Hogwarts and Ilvermorny schools, an Auror from the Ministère des Affaires Magiques de la France, and even talking portraits.

Dining locations include Café L'Air De La Sirène, Le Gobelet Noir, Bar Moonshine, and a Bièraubeeurre Cart (translation: this is where you can get Butterbeer) — all joined by other smaller shops like Les Galeries Mirifiques, a sweets shop cleverly named K. Rammelle, and Tour En Floo, a gift store inspired by the magic of the Floo Network.

After knowing Sebastian Sallow for seven, very long, years, Ominis had come to learn certain rules.  If his bed was empty at night, then it meant that the Slytherin was up to his usual midnight mischief.  If the new transfer student batted her eyelashes, the Sebastian would be wrapped around her wand….

…And if Ominis' life was a bit too quiet, then Sebastian Sallow was certainly up to no good.

Now ordinarily, what Sebastian did or did not get into was none of Ominis' concern. Goodness knows, he wiped his hands clean after the events that handed at the end of their 5th year.  But old habits were hard to kill, and Ominis couldn't get rid of the nagging worry in his head that his best friend was, once again, up to no good.

Embarking on an unfortunately too familiar routine, he scoured the castle for where his fellow classmate could have wandered off to.  He wasn't in his usual haunts.  Sebastian's bed, unkempt and unmade as usual, was empty. His usual station at Crossed Wands was cold.  And (perhaps most surprisingly) the 5th year transfer did not know where Sebastian had gotten himself into.  With a heavy sigh, Ominis sung open the heavy iron gates of the Undercroft.

To his surprise, his nose was assaulted with the heavy chemical odors of potion making.  He could heard the crackling burner under the cauldron and the grinding of mortar and petter.

"Sebastian Sallow, brewing potions?  Do my ears deceive me?"

"Ominis!"  Sebastian beamed, hastily pocketing something into his robes.  "Good to see you, I was about to say I could use a good hand." He grimaced as the grey brackish liquid bubbled an off-odor.  

Instantly, Ominis was on guard.  Unless Sebastian suddenly went mad and decided to actually focus on the upcoming NEWTS, he was certain that Sebastian was up to no good.

Quickly he waved his wand over the ingredients strewn across the table.

"Lavender, Valerian sprig…..nettle, standard…and" Ominis grimaced wiping his hand on his robes, "and flobberworm mucus. What on earth are you-Sebastian! Are you making a sleeping draught? What in Merlin's name do you intend to use it for?"

Sebastian laughed good-naturedly as he added the crushed ingredients from the mortar to the cauldron with his wand, "Perceptive as always Ominis.  Our very dear partner-in-crime has been having some trouble sleeping.  It's no wonder with half of the bloody Valley and all of Hogwarts constantly using her like a House elf."  His expression darkened, and his wand stilled for a moment before resuming.  "It's a shame she's too Hufflepuff to turn down their stupid requests.  Hardly has any time to herself, much less time for me.  Between all those silly errands those moon-minds have her running and her nightmares, she's having trouble sleeping." Sebastian's hand clenched on his wand and he muttered darkly,   "For once, I'm going to help her out a bit.  Let her relax a little."

Ominis shifted uncomfortably, "And why is it, can she not simply go to the Hospital Ward and request a Sleeping draught to help her sleep at night?"

Sebastian was glad that his best friend couldn't see his scowl. "For being the most powerful witch in all of Hogwarts, sometimes she doesn't know what's good for her. She's going to run herself ragged and end up passing out in some Acromantula cave.  This is going to encourage her to sleep a little, for her own good."

"Are you talking about drugging her Pumpkin juice?  Merlin's beard, Sebastian, if you're so worried about her, why don't you just tell her how you feel?"

He frowned.  "Why do you have to phrase it like that?  You and Anna, always making me out to be some great evil.  I'm helping our friend feel better.  All I’m doing is just taking care of her."  Sebastian paused, clenching his jaw.  "Besides ever since…certain events, she's been avoiding me."

Sebastian wasn't daft.  His little Hufflepuff, the one who used to look at him with wide shiny eyes like he was the moon and she was the Mooncalf, the one who's cheeks always glowed red in his presence, had grown distant and cold.  Oh she could claim otherwise, she could make excuse after excuse. There was always some magical creature in need, some godforsaken Merlin Trial needed to be solved. But he knew her. His dark eyes saw how she would no longer meet his intense gaze.  Lately, she always looked away, body twisting away from him almost begging to be anywhere but with him.  Her laugh wasn't as free, and her smile, the one that she saved only for Sebastain, only for him, started carrying this rather pinched quality.  

Ever since the unfortunate…end of his uncle, he could practically feel her slipping away.  It took all of his coaxing, his begging, his pleading, his lies, for him to calm her nerves.  To assuage her worries, to kiss and melt away the fears that were brewing in her heart.

And it worked.  For a while, she was his.  His shy doe would tentatively dip her hands into his, allowing him to trail burning kisses on the insides of her wrist.  Her breath would hitch as he nibbled her red ears, whispering scandalous promises of what would happen if she were to give in to his desires. His arms would wrap around her trembling frame, a protective, warm yet iron embrace begging her to stay.  His sweet nothings worked…for a bit.

It happened when Sebastian was starting to forget himself, to loosen his grip on her.  It was the most recent goblin's camp.  He was too reckless. His wand was too relaxed.  He was too charmed by her effortlessly use of ancient magic in combat. He was starting to mix up his promises to Ominis, to Anne, and to her.

"Crucio!"  

He never forgot her horrified face when Sebastian had broken yet another one of his many promises to her.  He had sworn to never use another Unforgivable curse.  To never flirt with the Dark Arts again.  To never give her another reason to fear him.

He grimaced stirring the cauldron again with his wand.  What's done, is done.  

Ominis floundered.  His Sebastian, the Sebastian that he met 7 years ago would have never been talking like this.

"Do you really think she's that stupid to drink some spiked Butterbeer?  Merlin's beard, Sebastian, this is 5th year all over again!  You've gone too far!  I'm going to tell her."  

Sebastian's heart leapt, fingernails digging into his wand handle.  He cooled himself down quickly, smoothing his robes,  "Calm down, troll-for-brains.  I'm just making a sleeping draught.  If she wants to take it, she can.  If she doesn't, it's no concern of mine.  She's a grown witch.  I'm just trying to do my best to support my only remaining friend at Hogwarts."

Ominis squirmed, now a bit ashamed.  "I'm sorry.  I-I didn't mean to accuse you of doing such awful things.  I…I guess just after everything that happened, I'm a bit on edge is all."  

The other boy shrugged, turning away from his maybe friend maybe now acquittance.  "It's understandable…I guess.  You should know, I would never do anything to harm her.  I take care of what's mine."

Ominis shivered, uncomfortable hearing the possessive dark tone that his once best friend had been using recently.  He was reminded of the concerning way his new Hufflepuff friend was so spellbound to Sebastian.  So loyal to him, that she would ignore all the warning signs and follow him down the dark arts.  Play victim to Sebastian's most darkest and perverse thoughts.  "Yes…well.  Sleeping draughts are easy.  Even a 1st year Gryffindor could make it in their sleep.  Now that I know you're not up to any trouble, I'll be heading out." He turned, robes swishing behind him as he made a hasty retreat from the awkward situation.

Sebastian dawdled a bit, waiting for the telltale sound of the iron gates shuttering close, telling him he was now and truly alone.  He breathed a sigh of relief, taking out the pouch of pearl dust he swiftly hid from Ominis' prying eyes.  With a flick of his wrist he added the final ingredient to his potion.   Characteristic spiraling steam burst from his cauldron the once gray liquid taking a new mother-of-pearl sheen.  Sebastian breathed deeply, trying to identify the new seductive scents emitting from his potion.  A familiar warm perfume, her favorite apple tarts, and something flowery that reminded him of her pillows in the newly renovated Room of Requirements. He grinned ladling some of the concoction into a small easily concealable vial, pocketing the solution into a hidden compartment of his sleeve.

It was a shame, it had to come down to this. Amortentia was a NEWTS level potion, notoriously difficult to make.  Perhaps, the feelings from the amortentia Sebastian had created for her could rival a small fraction of Sebastian's obsession.  If she didn't love Sebastian anymore, he'll make her love him.  She was his, and Sebastian was hers.  Nothing, would get in his way.  Nothing.

I distinctly remember reading a Gramander (Percival x Newt) fic years ago, where Newt was in an arranged marriage with Percival pre-FB1 so he knew Grindelwald was the one under the glamour. Because Percival never called him 'babe'.

It was really cute and the essence of slow build up bet those two. Because they've been married for like six years I think before something spicy happened between them. They had a house elf named Wendy.

They weren’t stopping. 

Voldemort saw the boy every night in dreams, in nightmares, witnessing things in the night that clung to his thoughts in the day. He couldn’t escape it—couldn’t escape those pained green eyes.

Every night, Voldemort had to watch a muggle beat a magical child. Every night, Voldemort couldn’t escape the dream, the nightmare. Every night, he saw the neglect, the abuse, the cruelty. Every day, Voldemort remembered his own childhood. Every day, he made the parallels.

And he didn’t like it.

It reminded Voldemort too much of his years at the orphanage. Before Hogwarts, the matron would try to control him through whipping his hands with a strap.

The age didn’t change the abuse. It was the same for the five year old as it was for the fourteen year old. When he looked at Potter, he saw a glimmer of a young Tom Riddle. Malnourished, thin, quiet—if it hadn’t been for those eyes, Voldemort would’ve mistaken these visions for the hellish nightmares of his mind’s own making. 

But they weren’t. They were real.

Throughout the day, Voldemort could feel emotions not his own. They bled through every section of his mind, seeped through every crevice of his control; there was no escaping them. They were overpowering, drowning Voldemort in their intensity.

Fear.

Agony.

Despair.

Hopelessness.

Voldemort knew enough of Occlumency to close whatever this link was with Potter. Perhaps, if he closed their link, the visions would end. He wouldn’t have to wake up in the middle of the night with his chest aching and his stomach in unfamiliar knots.

But he didn’t close the link.

He couldn’t help himself. Voldemort found that he wanted to know more, see more, but not in glee nor to celebrate the woes of this boy. 

A connection, a kinship had been forged overnight. He’d hated the boy, yet watching him be so cruelly treated by muggles boiled his blood in his defense. Prophesied enemy or not, Harry Potter was still a child of magic. He should’ve been protected, guarded, treasured—not treated like a house elf.

But there was a little thought in the back of Voldemort, one he couldn’t rid himself of: you put him there.

Voldemort reached his limit by after the seventh night of these nightmarish visions. He couldn’t take it anymore. He needed answers.

“Nagini,” whispered Voldemort. “I am going out. Guard the property.”

“Are you visiting the child?”

Voldemort paused, his hands stilling at his collar. He gave her a sharp nod. “I am. He is the source of my sleepless nights and I will have my answer.”

“Do you believe these dreams to be fake?”

He didn’t reply. He wanted them to be fake, but he knew better.

Voldemort dressed in a suit, one that wouldn’t catch the eye of any muggles. He cast a disillusionment charm on himself, as well as a glamor that gave him the appearance of a middle aged Tom Riddle should he be noticed. With a final glance towards Nagini where she lay curled up beside the fire, Voldemort apparated to Number Four Privet Drive of Little Whinging.

The sun bore down, oppressive in its heat and humidity. With a cooling charm, Voldemort remained protected from the brutal sunlight. He observed the quaint middle class neighborhood. For the most part, it was quiet, most people away to work or staying within their homes out of the heat.

Except for a lone boy, who was kneeling hunched over by the flower beds. He tugged on a particularly strong weed that didn’t appear to be budging.
