You probably know Electric Soldier Porygon/Dennō Senshi Porygon. The episode known for causing seizures and other bad things in kids due to the rapid strobing lights. The incident is also called Pokemon Shock.
And while it was dangerous, it absolutely harmed some kids, it actually didn’t do as much harm as you might think. Thousands of kids who reported issues but didn’t go to the hospital actually were more likely to be experiencing mass hysteria. And out of the 685 who were taken with an ambulance, the vast majority recovered on the way to the hospital.
But like I said at the start, the episode was still bad! More than 150 kids were hospitalized over it. And the episode did cause Japanese tv to add warnings to shows aimed at kids, specifically warnings telling them to watch in well-lit rooms and to keep their distance from the tv.

As you may or may not know, there was once an incident regarding a certain... Pokemon "anime" resulting alot of young kids being hospitalized due to seizures of flashing lights and many people antagonizing and even downright banning the Pokemon Porygon in some areas of Kanto, Johto, Sevii islands, Hoenn, and even Sinnoh. Although the true culprit was a certain 10 years old brat's Pikachu, and that Pikachu wasn't blame for his actions instead it was poor Porygon. After that incident the Pokemon anime went on a 4 month long hiatus, and when they return... they never showed Porygon, that episode it first appeared on or it's evolutions ever again. To this day people are still antagonizing on Porygon and some place are still banned in owning or using one due to that unfortunate incident. Fortunately other regions such Unova, Kalos, Alola, Galar, Paldea, and other regions aren't against banning Porygon, and the Porygon are well-loved in those regions unlike here unfortunately.

Note that the link leads to an AMV that contains rapid flashing, including both a sequence with a very neon yellow and black and a red flashing sequence.

Porygon Was Innocent: An epileptic perspective on Pokémon’s “Electric Soldier Porygon”
Tumblr media
On December 16th 1997 Pokémon made international headlines when their latest episode, “Dennō Senshi Porygon”—now commonly translated as “Electric Soldier Porygon”— caused 685 children to be taken into hospital by ambulance due to seizures, blindness, and convulsions. The event was dubbed by the Japanese Press as “PokémonShock” (“Pokémon Shokku”), and launched an investigation by the Japanese Government into what had happened. When discussed the story usually ends there, just a fun way to conclude a listicle of banned anime episodes, or an explanation to fans as to why Porygon has never had a major role  in the main anime since. But there is far more to the story of Pokémon’s banned episode: a story that includes a model train enthusiast from Birmingham, England, and a little mouse who got away scott free.
As an Epileptic, I’ve been very outspoken about my opinions on the increased use of strobe lighting effects in American cartoons. Even today with movies like The Incredibles II, the use of flashing lights and red lighting effects has made a lot of cinema not only inaccessible but potentially deadly for many viewers. Yet people have accused me of being a hypocrite: why do I continue to love Pokémon? Surely if I had conviction in my beliefs, I’d refuse to watch the show that caused all those children to be taken to hospital! My response often surprises people. That, in my personal opinion, morally speaking, the animators were not responsible for what happened. That Porygon was, in fact, innocent.

thinking about how when i was really really young - in like, 2002 or so - i traded a yugioh card for a pokemon card and my mom made me give it back because she had seen the news stories about electric soldier porygon and didnt want me getting into pokemon. (bad news for her)
but like, the card i traded was the foil dark magician that came in the yugi starter deck. i love dark magician but this is not a rare card by any means. and since when you're a kid, the only real vector for understanding card value you have is "does it sparkle" i asked for a holographic pokemon card. and the card this kid gave me was The Charizard. The One. The One That Is Six Figures Now.
but noooo since my mom was so afraid her 6 year old was gonna swallow his own tongue watching a banned episode of an anime i was denied generational wealth in 2024. yes i would have cared for that charizard card. it would have gone in the big fucking garbage bag of yugioh cards and it would have been fine

for drawing requests, perhaps the khux gang with what pokemon they'd have? (or maybe just a few of them lol)
ok i would Love to actually draw this kinda thing someday but it would take more than i have in me atm so i will simply ramble about it. some of these are what i think they would realistically have in some sort of pokémon au and half of these are just like pokémon i think match their vibe
first off. the entire porygon line fits brain PERFECTLY. it’s like an artificial computer program thing (also its existence is meant to be an ironic fourth wall break lol). meant to be a helpful program that fights bugs and viruses in cyberspace. its final evolution porygon-z is where it gets interesting… it has grown in power, but it’s been corrupted by dubious data itself…….. as another option uhhhhh gallade. a very noble and mindful and steadfast soldier. i just love gallade. he also deserves a steel type. screw it klefki the literal key ring pokémon
lauriam was born to have a roserade let’s be so real it’s grass/poison… looks like a lovely bouquet of flowers but it can Kill you… plus it even has like the dapper cape thing. it’s a no brainer from me on this one. but i’ll give him a runner up or two. he deserves some ghost types too, becoming a shell of himself… i’m feeling poltchageist/sinistcha. grass/ghost types associated with like hospitality and seeming all proper but also it’s a ruse and they will kill you. cofagrigus is a consideration almost entirely only for its pokémon sword entry that says it ‘no longer remembers it was once human’ and also like grabbing and trapping the living. marluxia…
would it be funny to give strelitzia a grass/ghost type like phantump (dead child) or is that too sad. ok how about she gets lilligant. very beautiful elegant grass type with an orange flower. alternatively she gets floette- it’s not a grass type but like very clearly associated with flowers (and also. dying. if we’re taking gen 6 lore info account. and then being brought back to life but at devastating costs and turning the person who was desperate to do so into a monster)
skuld……… i’m really indecisive here. i think psychic and fire and steel are all good choices. first thoughts here it’s gotta be something to do with stars of course. y’know what? i think she deserves cosmog privileges. little star baby that can evolve into one of two legendary pokémon. she has that aura. (if i don’t just straight up give her necrozma lol). but also gothitelle is a really good pick for her bc it’s associated with both the stars and with seeing the future (although the emotional detachment and terror don’t fit that well). maybe delphox? but also she deserves a sword. honedge. screw it. zacian. skuld deserves a legendary
ventus….. if we’re talking khux era specifically my immediate thought was mimikyu. it’s Gotta be mimikyu. desperate for love and attention, taking the form of someone else and trying to fit in…. and zorua of course!!! i mean ig it’s more like zorua would be his darkness that shapeshifted to deceive him but like that works!! that works. the tricky fox pokémon… and because i’m not done being evil i want him to have a pokémon with the ability infiltrator. cute option is whimsicott. option relevant to vanitas’ later existence is ninjask (bc think about shedinja…) option relevant to him probably deserving a flying type is the hoppip line
elrena gets electric types obviously but she isn’t quite as vicious as larxene so she gets like. pachirisu. plus the color scheme works. or shinx
and last but not least ephemer the guy of all ever. this one is really hard….others have assigned him pokémon before that i agree with, such as rosie giving him arcanine (he deserves an Ouppy and it’s a noble majestic beast) and roadie giving him eldegoss (dandelion seeds….). it’s a wild thought but i also kind of think of mew… bc it’s said to be kinda like the genetic ancestor of all pokémon… the nexus from which all worlds spring… i think ephy deserves some sort of mythical or legendary. i’m feeling victini… he always wins somehow am i right… and he’s like sora’s good luck victory charm in kh3… but also i think he should have a water type. suicune privileges be upon ye. no yknow what he gets volcarona it has the fire type and it’s like worshipped as a sun deity for having saved the land. idk. half this post is me trying to justify giving my favs to my characters lol
oh and how could i forget the player… immediate thought is spinda. there are something like four billion different forms right. representing how player is a customizable avatar. for deeper lore reasons how about basculegion the ghost fish. ‘clads itself in the souls of comrades that perished before fulfilling their goals of journeying upstream’ those who didn’t make it out of the keyblade war or out of the fall of daybreak town etc still remain with them in spirit giving them strength, although they were the only one strong enough to survive…. (also it evolves by taking a ton of damage without dying. well it kinda does die but that’s beyond the point right)
i could probably say more and make this more coherent and provide better choices but unfortunately i think the sickness brain has finally caught up to me so i’m gonna finally hit post

Just saying, that website of theirs makes me think that one Spindlehorse Incident definitely in the cards is a major epilepsy trigger incident ala Electric Soldier Porygon that staff predicted but Vivzie overrides them on.
No kidding. I don't even have epilepsy or motion sickness or anything like that and I didn't feel good after being jolted by it.

How is the movie ableist? And if you know you’re photosensitive to flashing lights or differentiating colors why not just /skip/ the episode especially considering that it’s obvious you’ve watched this movie before??? Why bitch like seriously 🤦🏻‍♀️
here's the thing: there is a lot of people who can't watch this movie without health repercussions. best case scenario? they get dizzy, worst case scenario? they die, and it's not even an overreaction, i wish it was, but people can die from seizures because, (un)fun fact: seizures are a neurological issue
so, how is it ableist? besides abusing an effect that can kill people, an effect that has been banned in japan since 1997 because they are aware of what can happen from a bit of exposure to it, especialy when it comes to kids (google electric soldier porygon, a lot of kids ended up in the hospital), they still haven't issued any official warning, which is the bare minimum.
itsv came out in 2018, people ended up in the hospital, people asked a lot of times to have a warning about these effects and not only the first movie didn't get any warning, the second didn't either
"but you already know" no, i haven't always known. here's the thing: you assume that i have watched the movie, but no, i haven't not in its entirety, because i started to watch not knowing about the effects, i started to feel dizzy, and only then was informed that the entire movie is a hazard for my health
this happened with me knowing that i have photosensitivity, imagine if i hadn't known that and chalked the dizziness to hunger or whatever and kept watching?
why bitch? seizures aren't the only photosensitivity condition, but they are the ones i know, and let me tell you something about them: they are deeply traumatic. i assume you are also familiar with sanders sides, where we tag a character as a trigger warning because he reminds people of their abusers. i'm in favor of that, but then why is the fandom so upset when i ask for warnings for a thing that is not only traumatizing but that could send me to the hospital?
there was a warning in the video? yes, but it was barely legible and it was on top of another thing that can cause seizures
i did skip the episode, but that doesn't stop me from thinking that the approach is bullshit when i have sent endless messages to thomas, messages that he has replied to, but the issue remains
i'm not saying sony or thomas did it with malice, but how many times do we have to ask to be at the very least correctly warned? especially in a movie where the message is inclusivity and a youtuber who has always preached respect? why are photosensitive folks excluded from that inclusivity and respect?

Ooh, for the Parahuman ask game: A breaker whose breaker state manifests as a collection of multicolored flashing orbs of light that inflicts any number of terrible mental effects on those who view them directly.
See I am absolutely terrible, because my immediate reaction to this was to make an ABB cape, called "Denno Senshi" or Electric Soldier.
It's a reference to "Denno Senshi Porygon", the episode which famously caused seizures in Japan.
Also I feel like the area of effect this Cape has should get them a Shaker effect as well.
So definitely a villain, but also by virtue of the way their powers work probably not someone who can work with other capes well, the power interactions are always bad....Which in ABBs case is not really a detriment, they have fewer capes and a lot of "Conscripts"
This is someone who can be effectively put on guard duty, or sent in first to mentally flashbang a rival gang or be left behind to slow down pursuing heroes while everyone else escapes.
As for the costume....Vibrant, jarringly so.... I'm thinking deliberately mismatched styles but an unmissable Cybergoth flavor

Princess vs. Princess review
Might as well give an episode review of Pokemon Original Series episode 52, better known as Princess vs. Princess, or going by Japanese names, Fierce Fight! Pokémon Girls' Festival, especially when that episode, more than anything, was ultimately what solidified my status as a die-hard Misty fan. Die-hard enough in fact that I spent a decade and a half trying to ensure she came back and resumed her goal after it was stolen from her. As you may well know, this episode was the actual debut for Jessie’s Lickitung, which had earlier been alluded to in a previously-aired episode, So Long, Yet So Farfetch’d. The episode was aired out of order both in Japan and the United States thanks in large part to the events surrounding Electric Soldier Porygon. It was also missing Togepi in its entirety (presumably because it occurred before the events of Attack of the Prehistoric Pokemon as that was when its egg was discovered by Ash). It also alluded to another Pokemon episode that also was aired out of order, which I’ll get to later on. Oh, and the tournament in question essentially acted as a prototype towards Pokemon Contests in the games and anime, meaning Misty technically was the first Coordinator.
Will have to be multiple posts due to that stupid 4096 text limit error...
