In Rajya Sabha, PM Modi praises NCP and BJD, slips in a dig at Congress - india news
Tumblr media
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday surprised the Rajya Sabha with some unexpected praise for members of two opposition parties - Sharad Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party and Naveen Patnaik’s Biju Janata Dal - for scrupulously adhering to the bar on members trooping into the Well of the House to protest.“Both parties, they decided, as a matter of self discipline, that they will not go into the Well of the House. And I have seen, not one of their members has violated this rule,” PM Modi told the Rajya Sabha at a special discussion to commemorate the beginning of its 250th session on Monday.Jumping into the Well - the area in front of the presiding officer where the secretariat staffers sit - is not allowed under the rules. But most opposition parties do not adhere to this rule and it is normal sight in parliament for their members to stand in the Well during protests.PM Modi’s decision to commend the NCP comes against the backdrop of an effort by Sharad Pawar’s party to form the government in Maharashtra in alliance with the Shiv Sena and Congress. The conduct of members of the two parties, PM Modi said, held out a lesson for all other parties including the BJP that has also disrupted proceedings when it was in the opposition.“All political parties have to learn, including my party, all of us have to learn that neither has it impacted NCP’s political journey nor the BJD’s. This means that one can win hearts and trust of people without going into the Well,” he said.“Why don’t we learn from them,” the prime minister said, suggesting that the members should at some point discuss and thank the two parties for the conduct of their members. But PM Modi’s gesture to compliment the two opposition parties started and ended with the NCP and BJD.PM Modi, who had started his speech to stress the importance of the Rajya Sabha, credited the Rajya Sabha for giving an opportunity to those away from electoral politics to contribute to the nation and its development. The Rajya Sabha, he said, gives people who could not clear elections to be a part of Parliament. “But their contribution is as valuable,” he said, naming Dr BR Ambedkar as one such example.“Who can forget that it was through the Rajya Sabha that a stalwart like Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar could contribute even more to national progress,” he said, pointing out that Ambedkar was never allowed to be elected to the Lok Sabha. The point about Dr Ambedkar, often referred to as the Father of the Constitution, not being allowed to enter the lower house is seen as a jibe at the Congress.Dr Ambedkar, who steered the drafting committee of the Constituent Assembly and later went on to be India’s first law minister, fell out with the Congress leadership and quit the party. The Congress opposed Dr Ambedkar when he contested his first election in 1952, and defeated him. Dr Ambedkar stood again in Bhandara two years later but was yet again defeated by the Congress. #RajabhauKhobragade
Today is the Birth Anniversary of Barrister Rajabhau Khobragade, an intellectual heir of Dr. B.R Ambedkar (the architect of the constitution of India) Bhaurao Khobragade, affectionately called Rajabhau, was born on 25th September 1925 in Chandrapur, Maharashtra to Shri Dewaji and Smt. Indira Bai. His father was a forest contractor and a social worker.
Rajabhau Khobragade had his early education at Jubilee High School, Chandrapur. He then went on to clear the Inter Science exam from Nagpur Science College in 1943 and B.A. exam from Morris College, Nagpur in 1945. On the advice of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, he went to London to study Law at the Lincolns Inn in 1950.
He was one of the 16 students Dr. Ambedkar sent to London to study but was an exception as he went to London bearing his own expenses and the rest were scholarship students. The story behind this is that he was primarily selected amongst the 15 students who were supposed to go England and study on State Funds by Dr. Ambedkar. But as Shri Dewaji Khobragade was a close associate of Dr. Ambedkar, Dr. Ambedkar requested Dewaji to send Bhaurao on his own expenses so that one more student from the Scheduled Caste community could benefit from State scholarship and 16 Scheduled Caste students can go rather than just 15.
His leadership qualities were evident from his student days. He was elected the Secretary of the Madhya Pradesh Scheduled Castes Students Federation from 1943-1945. At the young age of 27, he was elected as the President of the City Council of Chandrapur District. During his tenure from 1952-55, he carried out several developmental works in the city. He was also elected as the Chairman of the Nagpur State Scheduled Castes Federation in October 1953.
Rajabhau had great organizational and team building capabilities. Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, spotting this talent, had entrusted him with the election campaign and the campaign for conversion to Buddhism, which he completed successfully. After the death of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Rajabhau Khobragade was instrumental in bringing together the leaders of the Dalit movement and forming the Republican Party of India, to fulfill the wishes of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, and became its first General Secretary. At the age of 33, in 1958, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha and again for a second time in December 1966. He had the honour of being the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha from December 1961 to April 1972. Rajabhau was a member of the Rajya Sabha for 18 years.
He had a firm conviction that giving land to landless farmers would reduce unemployment and boost the production of foodgrains. To achieve this objective he started Satyagraha in 1961. He had contested two Lok Sabha elections, first, when he contested from Bhandara in 1957 and got 105758 votes against a Congress candidate and was 2nd in position on the Scheduled Caste Federation (SCF) ticket; next, when he fought from Nagpur in 1977 which was an anti-Congress election and again came 2nd taking 130457 votes on a Republican Party (Khobragade) ticket.
Another area of his interest was the education of the downtrodden. Realizing that good education alone can uplift downtrodden people and bring all-round growth and development, he opened schools and colleges. He advocated free education for all children from the age of 6-14 years.
He also started a weekly newspaper, Prajasatta, using it as a vehicle to put across his views.
He visited many countries like Ireland, France, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, USA, Hong Kong, China, Bhutan, Thailand, and Ceylon. In September 1965, on the invitation of the American government, Rajabhau visited USA where he met Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.with whom he discussed civil rights issues.
Rajabhau Khobragade was a revolutionary leader who worked tirelessly for the upliftment of the poor and downtrodden till he died on 09.04.1984.

Dalit groups from Nagpur have opposed the Congress’s plan to field former BJP MP Nana Patole from the Nagpur Lok Sabha seat against union minister Nitin Gadkari, citing his alleged support to the perpetrators of the Khairlanji murders.
Patole, who joined the Congress a year ago, is now said to be the frontrunner for the Congress ticket from Nagpur Lok Sabha seat.
Dalit activists say Patole had “openly supported the culprits” behind the brutal killing of four members of a Dalit family in Khairlanji village in the Bhandara district of Maharashtra in 2006.

Tumblr media
Bypoll results 2018 will be out in a few hours as counting of votes for by-elections to four Lok Sabha seats and 10 Assembly constituencies will be held on Thursday.
The Lok Sabha seats that went to polls are Palghar and Bhandara-Gondiya in Maharashtra, the politically-crucial Kairana Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh, and the Nagaland parliamentary constituency.
Further, by-elections were held in the Legislative Assemblies of Shahkot (Punjab), Tharali (Uttarakhand), Ampati (Meghalaya), Chengannur (Kerala), Jokihat (Bihar), Gomia (Jharkhand), Silli (Jharkhand), Maheshtala (West Bengal), Noorpur (Uttar Pradesh), and Palus Kadegaon (Maharashtra).
The Kairana results, in particular, will also serve as a test case for a united Opposition against the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The Kairana bypoll is also significant as it will test the ruling BJP's popularity in the electorally crucial state of Uttar Pradesh a year ahead of the 2019 general elections.
