Tough fight likely between BJP and Congress in Maski bypolls
The Maski Legislative Assembly Constituency where bypolls are scheduled to be held on April 17 is likely to see a tough fight between the BJP and the Congress. Apart from nominees from the BJP and the Congress , a dozen local leaders are sweating it out in reaching the rural voters as the constituency includes a few villages carved out from Lingsugur taluk and more than 50 villages from Sindhanur taluk. The candidates and party workers need to traverse three taluks, Lingsugur, Maski and Sindhanur, to cover the villages. Going by previous election results, Mr. Pratapgouda Patil, who won for the third time from the constitutency in 2008 on BJP ticket, and earlier in 2013 and 2018 on Congress ticket, has proved his individual strength by winning three elections in a row though on different party ticket. After a year of the 2018 results, Mr. Pratapgouda Patil resigned from the Congress and also as MLA to join hands with the BJP and support the formation of the new government. At present, he is contesting on BJP ticket taking on Mr, Turvihal who is contesting on Congress ticket. When he contested on BJP ticket in the 2018 election, Mr. Pratapgouda Patil defeated Mr. Turvihal by a thin margin of 213 votes. After unanticipated political developments, Mr. Patapgouda Patil and Mr. Tuvihal are forced to fight each other again. The Janata Dal(S), which could not put up a fight against the BJP and the Congress in 2008, 2013 and 2018 elections, secured 11,392 votes when Somanath Nayak was its candidate in the 2018 election. Earlier, it secured 3,488 votes when Amaresh was its candidate in the 2013 election and 8,756 votes when Ayyanagouda was the party candidate in the 2008 election. This time, the party did not opt to field any candidate in the byelection after its State president H.D. Kumaraswamy declared that his party would not fight in the Maski Assembly and Belagavi Lok Sabha bypolls. As the Janata Dal(S) is not ready to face elections, it will now be a direct fight between the BJP and the Congress in the byelections. Mr. Pratapgouda Patil, who has filed his nomination papers, will file a second set of nomination papers on March 29 accompanied by his party leaders in a grand procession. Mr. Turvihal, who is yet to file his nomination papers, has already started his campaigning in the rural areas braving the summer heat. Both candidates have been welcomed warmly by villagers in Sindhanur taluk. Last week, people donated money to Mr. Turvihal to be used for election expenditure, when he was campaigning in Sindhanur taluk. Source link Read the full article

via Today Bharat In the end, the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) breached a strong Congress bastion and swept the Huzurnagar byelection by a record margin of 43,233 votes. TRS candidate S. Saidi Reddy won a one-sided mandate against Congress candidate Padmavathi Reddy, wife of TPCC president N Uttam Kumar Reddy. Except the Congress, all remaining 26 candidates who were in the fray, including the BJP and the Telugu Desam, have lost their deposits. The BJP, which has started claiming to being an emerging alternative to the TRS in Telangana, secured fourth position. The third place, interestingly, went to Sapavath Suman, an independent candidate, who despite losing deposit, got more votes than the BJP and the Telugu Desam. In Huzurnagar, the TRS secured 56.45 per cent votes while the Congress receiv-ed 34.60 per cent. Out of 2,00,239 valid votes, Mr Saidi Reddy of TRS polled 1,12,796 votes, Congress ca-ndidate Mrs Reddy polled 69,563 votes. Other candidates, including Sapavath Suman (with 2,693 votes), BJP candidate Kota Rama Rao (2,621) and TD candidate Chava Kiranmayi (1,827), were left far behind. TRS candidate Saidi Reddy took a lead from the very first round of counting, and stayed, with his lead increasing with each round, till the final 22nd round. Congress was unable to get a lead over the TRS in even a single round. The victory in Huzurnagar byelection brings great relief to the TRS, wherein it has reaffirmed its pole position in Telangana state politics, after big setbacks in the Lok Sabha elections. After the creation of Huzurnagar Assembly constituency in 2009, Congress candidate Uttam Kumar Reddy won with 29,194 votes majority. In the subsequent elections in 2014 and 2018 Assembly elections too, Mr Reddy won but his majority kept coming down. Todayrsquo;s results have shifted the balance. It is the first time since the creation of Huzurnagar Assembly constituency that a TRS candidate won, and the Congress was defeated. Most political analysts had argued that any bypolls in the shadow of the issue of the RTC strike, in which striking employees found support from several sections, including government employees, would render a TRS win difficult. Defying all such predictions, the TRS kept its track record of winning byelections intact. After the TRS came to power in 2014, two byelections were held for the Narayankhed and Palair assembly seats due to death of Congress MLAs. The TRS won both seats, defying the argument of sympathy vote. The Huzurnagar Assembly bypoll was necessitated because incumbent MLA, Uttam Kumar Reddy, resigned after he was elected as an MP from the Nalgonda Lok Sabha seat. In the 2018 Assembly elections, Mr Reddy defeated Mr Saidi Reddy. Ms Padmavathi Reddy, who was an MLA in neighbouring Kodad, also lost in the 2018 elections. Mr Saidi Reddy, by settling the scores and notching an impressive win, has left few doubts ndash; he is a young rising star in the party.

KARNATAKA BYELECTION RESULTS: KEY POINTS
HIGHLIGHTS Stakes are high for the ruling JD(S)-Congress, as the two arch rivals have reached an electoral understanding for the first time after forming the government A total of 31 candidates were in the fray for the bypolls from all the five constituencies NEW DELHI: The results for three Lok Sabha and two assembly constituencies in Karnataka were declared on Tuesday as counting began with a total of 1,248 counting staff deployed. Polling for the byelections took place on Saturday. Here are the latest developments: * Congress’s AS Nyamagouda wins Jamkhandi assembly seat by a margin of 39480 votes. He won against BJP’s Srikant Kulkarni. * Anitha Kumaraswamy from the JD(S) wins Ramanagaram assembly seat with a margin of 109137 votes. She won against BJP’s L Chandrashekar, who had pulled out of the contest but officially still remains the party candidate. * BJP’s BY Raghavendra leads by 36467 votes in Shivamogga. * Congress’ VS Ugrappa leads by 184203 votes in Bellary. * JD(S) LR Shivaramegowda leads by 121963 votes in Mandya. * Stakes are high for the ruling JD(S)-Congress, as the two arch rivals have reached an electoral understanding for the first time after forming the government and if approved by the voters, can change the state’s political scenario. * A total of 31 candidates were in the fray from all the five constituencies, though the contest is mainly between the Congress-JDS combine and the BJP. * The bypoll results will determine the fate of Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy’s wife Anita Kumaraswamy, state BJP chief B S Yeddyurappa’s son B Y Raghavendra and former Chief Minister S Bangarappa’s son Madhu Bangarappa and others. * In Ramanagara, Anitha Kumaraswamy is set to win with virtually no opposition as the BJP candidate L Chandarshekar dropped out of the contest and rejoined the Congress. * Among the most closely-watched constituencies in the bypolls are Ballary and Shivamogga. While sons of three former chief ministers were pitted against each other in Shivamogga, it is a prestige battle between Congress leader DK Shivakumar and BJP leader B Sreeramulu. * The byelections were necessitated after Yeddyurappa (Shivamogga) and Sriramalu (Ballari), and C SPuttaraju of JD(S) (Mandya) resigned as MPs on their election to the assembly in May this year. * Bypolls to Jamkhandi assembly seat was caused by the death of Congress MLA Siddu Nyamagouda, while Ramanagara fell vacant after Kumaraswamy gave up the seat, preferring Chennapatna, the other constituency from where he had won.
