Question:
The probability of significant rainfall tomorrow at 8am is 35%. The foreman has shown common sense 5% of the time. What is the probability that Boop drives an hour to the worksite only to be told to pack up and go home?
Answer:
Too damn high, that’s for sure.

Most guilds will do this for you!
I was part of one for about eight years and they were by far the history nerds of the faire. We did living history demos in the off season for schools and museums.
We had to be as historically accurate as possible in clothing, no non period hair, nails, or piercings, and no visible tattoos.
All of us could go into great detail about our particular specialties - mine was fiber craft. But there were other crafts, historical weaponry, courts with actual historical figures, blacksmiths and glassblowers…
It’s there if you look!
i think every medieval timesey ren fair type attraction should have a booth of pedantry where if you wanna know if something happening is Authentic or you wanna ask questions about real medieval times or whatever you can stop by and there's just a historian sitting on a throne of books eager to show you all their research

This is what people mean when they say to embrace your weird. This is what they mean when they say be true to yourself.
Just exist as yourself. It’s okay.
Get over the fear of being seen.
Stop caring about how you’re gonna be perceived. Stop doubting yourself. Stop aiming to be perfect. Stop ruminating.
Accept who you are. Hype yourself. Invest in yourself. Be audacious. Trust in the greater outcome. Allow yourself to be seen as you are.

I feel as if there isn't enough plus size representation when it comes to yandere and darling spaces.
Imagine that ou're moving away from your parents, they want you to live your life and focus on being happy but you just need a job.
You find a job near your new home, a cute bakery that's somewhat popular, all pink and floral and just very cutesy. Applying there, you end up with the job coincidentally!
Imagine a cute baker, a cute girl that's soft all over, with beige skin, short dark hair, and soft eyes that are too shy to look you in the face.
Your new boss, she claims that you'll be cashiering and helping her out with the front as her old cashier quit unexpectedly.
As long as you're out at the time you're meant to be, you're free to take pastries and drinks.
Your first week is normal and consistent. Your hours are good and fair, and the pay is way more than a bakery would normally offer.
Until it isn't normal anymore, forgetting your phone or jacket, you return to collect it and find the lights off. Without thinking, you sneak in and get it but hear strange crying from the storage room.
Nothing out of the ordinary, you see your boss with her back turned to you and shaking. Being the kind person you are, you ask whats wrong, startling her and making her turn to look suddenly.
Only for you to be met with pure darkness and wide, teary eyes.
No face, just inky darkness, she's quick to turn away and yell at you to get out to go away. In your shock and confusion, you do.
When you return in the morning for work, you find that the bakery is locked and a note states that the bakery is closed for the weekend.

The problem with being an educator is that you never stop being an educator.
I'm currently doing a mandatory 40 hour training through work and it is KILLING me because the quality of the training is just atrocious.
Beyond just the basic technical stuff (quizzes that don't work, broken links, stuff that crashes, graphics that are inconsistent, typos), I've hit so many things that drive me nuts.
Reading the slides to you.
Making you open a handout to advance, but then immediately reading it to you.
No way to go back and review a section without repeating the entire, hour long module.
~*~ Sparkling ableism ~*~
Reading an entire. Slide. of code citations to you. One at a time.
Examples that make you choose wrong answers to advance the slide.
Images with tiny arrows (less than a quarter inch long) on the screen that change the answer.
Images that directly contradict the point being made. Please explain to me how a spacewalk has falling hazards that will be mitigated by a railing.
I'm reporting the ableism, but the rest is just...bad design. And based on the statistics, this training has been around for at least a decade, probably closer to fifteen years, without updates.
If I was this bad of a teacher, I wouldn't have gotten hired back. It drives me nuts that this is official training that my company paid for.
This is why you pay for professional curriculum designers, friends.

There is no conspiracy. Seriously. Stop that.
We cannot retroactively assign sexualities to people. Maybe that "pair of women portrayed in the same way as husband and wife" considered themselves what we'd today consider lesbians. Or maybe they were aroace. Or bisexual. Or maybe they were queerplatonic. Or maybe they were combining assets in a way that made sense for them at the time. We. Cannot. Know. Gender identity is complicated. It's culturally nuanced. As a scientist, I cannot conclusively state how people in the past viewed themselves and I can barely provide a view of how society viewed them. But I can provide you the context in a neutral way. Neutrality isn't inherently bad.
Same with your "ritual significance" jokes. Or your "we didn't even ask a local" jokes. Many scientists ARE locals! They are embedded in and come from the culture they want to study and interpret. They have the context and nuance.
I'll laugh at the overwhelming white cisheteropatriarchy of science any day. But I find it interesting that these critiques of how "stupid" social scientists are have gotten more vocal now that more women, queer people, and historically excluded groups are entering the fields.
One of the more frustrating things about the particular kind of anti-intellectualism directed at the humanities here and on places like tiktok is that pointing it out makes you seem like a killjoy.
No, I actually didn't find your "historians will say they were just friends" joke funny. No I don't think speculating that old photos are in black and white to make them seem older is harmless. But I seem uptight and "not fun" when I say these things.

Some more thoughts on the idea that Elrond gets more eldritch as he ages. I'm gonna make another post about this that's more fun Eldritch Peredhel stuff but I felt the need to address some of the implications of this headcanon first.
Like I said, Elrond changes slowly, and most elves don't notice at first. When they do, though, things get interesting.
See, Elrond looks increasingly like Luthien over time. As a child, he had similar facial features, but didn't really resemble her otherwise. But when his hair starts to darken and his eyes turn gray, it becomes clear that he's almost an exact replica of Doriath's princess.
The Sindar find this amazing and wonderful– for a lot of them, their feelings of grief over the loss of Doriath are very connected to the loss of Luthien and Melian (who kept Doriath safe), and "having Luthien back" is great. Of course, this puts Elrond in a very strange position. On one hand, it's nice for him to have elves who encourage him to push the limits of his Ainuric power and tell him stories about his mother's family, who he knows so little about. On the other hand, he can't deny it's a little unsettling sometimes, the way that people can stare right at him and see someone else. He also doesn't like how... possessive some of them seem of him, expecting him to act like his ancestors, even though he's his own person.
It's a little more complicated for the Noldor. Some of them find Elrond's increasingly obvious powers creepy– they're a lot more inclined to be distrustful of the Ainur. But it's worth noting that for all Elrond looks like Luthien, his gray eyes and dark hair also make him look very Noldor, a lot more than he did as a child. And while some of the Noldor are uneasy about Elrond, lots of them see him as one of the finest jewels of the Finwean family– a healer who's dedication to his craft is almost unmatched. They can also be a little bit weird about seeing his ancestors when they look at him, or about expecting him to dress, act, and present himself in a certain way. Especially the old Feanorians, who care deeply about Elrond but do not always express that care in normal ways.
Gil-Galad is a huge help here– he's older than Elrond, but was too young to have any memories of most of the people the other elves compare Elrond to. And he has a very low tolerance for people making his herald uncomfortable. Sometimes he enlists Galadriel and Celeborn (who cared about Elrond for who he was long before he started looking like Luthien) to deal with particularly stubborn elves.

There’s a really good podcast on mad cow by Maintenance Phase that explains why. Mad cow has an extremely long incubation period in humans - like 10 years on average but up to 30. That’s why it’s so scary and they’re being so careful. Once you start showing symptoms, you’re dead in no more than two years, and there isn’t a good way to test during the latency period.
We’re just exiting the maximum latency period from the 90s spike.
I just donated blood for the first time! I would have done it earlier but they wouldn't let people like me donate before (people who lived in Europe for an extended amount of time).
I have to say the homophobia in those instruction is wild. The amount of time spent on HIV and specifically HIV transmission through anal sex is weird. Yes, we don't want HIV-infected blood to enter blood banks. But that's true of all blood diseases. Plus HIV spread is mostly caused by needle sharing not butt/group sex! There was one question about needle sharing and like 3 on anal sex.
All that said I'm absolutely going to go donate again! Now I just have to find a place that does plasma too.
Yikes! Where are you donating???
In Wales it's a lot more lenient, I think. This is the gist of the questionnaire - the one they give you on the day to fill out is a little more involved than this, but that's basically it.
Super cool though! What snacks or merch did they give you? We get orange club biscuits and squash made with what tastes remarkably like a 1:4 squash to water ratio, in contravention of all laws of god and man
