Is It Ok For An Alligator To Have Tape On Their Mouth?

Alligators make pretty amazing animal ambassadors when handled safely and ethically. And it is actually pretty safe to take them out to interact with the zoo-going public (or general public in some settings), when done correctly. Many zoos and outreach organizations do an amazing job of this! Every state has different rules, but even if a state doesn't mandate that alligators be banded... well, if you're a responsible crocodilian handler, you'll band anyways. It's a huge public safety issue! Even an accidental graze against their front teeth can cause injury. See, the alligators that are used as handle-able ambassadors are pretty small, and their teeth are razor sharp. An adult gator has sharp teeth, too, as well as blunt teeth for crushing, and they also have the additional force of their jaw muscles.

Here's what it sounds like when an adult alligator pops his jaw. (Don't worry about the hissing/gaping; this is a trained and queued behavior. The stick towards the top of the inside of the mouth is triggering the bite reflex. Chester probably got lots of chicken and fish as he learned to do this.)

What's more, biting is an important reflex for crocodilians. The lower jaws of crocodilians are some of the most innervated tissues in the animal kingdom; they are more sensitive than human fingertips! Even the slightest touch triggers their bite reflex, which likely is an adaptation that lets them detect changes in water pressure that signal a snack heading their way.

So yeah. They need to not be able to bite for public safety. There's just too much risk involved with an unbanded alligator (or other crocodilian). Fortunately, it's easy to get a crocodilian to not bite- you just need to band its mouth!

(This fella is Frodo the dwarf caiman, but the principle is the same.)

This works because while crocodilians have an extremely strong bite force (claims range from 2,000 PSI to 5,000+ PSI, but I don't have time to get into that now but someday I will probably), but not particularly strong muscles to open their mouths. Selective pressure for quickly nabbing prey in murky water where there's not a lot of visibility lead to pterygoid and adductor muscles so big, they extend into the animal's neck. But those muscles only pull the jaw closed- they don't work to open it! That's why you see people holding an alligator's mouth closed with their hands.

Safe bands include:

Silicone tape- this is the best. It sticks to itself and not the gator's snout

Electrical tape

Medical tape

Rubber or elastic bands

There are other options, but these are the most popular- they're cheap, easily available, and safe. So if you see an alligator (or other crocodilian) out in public and it's got tape on its mouth, don't worry too much- it's safe for the gator (most of the time) and it's safe for you!

Here's a couple of safe tape options, modeled by a juvenile American alligator in pink electrical tape (I forget her name, these are from an outreach event a couple of years ago) and Pagasa, a juvenile Philippine crocodile wearing the white medical tape.

So when is tape not safe? When it's the wrong kind of tape. One of the worst offenders is duct tape.

When you're banding an alligator, you need to think about how sensitive their jaws are. A band that's too tight or too sticky can hurt them badly when it's removed- and you want that removal process to be fast, so that it doesn't stress them out too much.

What inspired this post was this picture I saw on Facebook:

That's so much duct tape! Now, this little guy is quite unhealthy; he's been loose in the Pittsburgh area all winter, and he's been struggling. What you see here is a very quick tape job done as he's getting ready for transport. The article didn't say who taped him, but given that he's in a dog crate and was found by bicyclists, I would wager that it was some harried animal control officer who was doing the best they could. And that's fine because this was truly an emergency situation. In an emergency situation, uncomfortable is always, always better than unsafe.

But if you see a tourist attraction and they've put duct tape on their alligator's mouth? That's a red flag! Banding an alligator in public is the safe, correct thing to do- you just want to make sure that it's done right.

Adam Evans was a young man who grew up in Dakota City.  An aspiring musician, Adam had a true knack for writing rap songs and he made a demo tape for the acclaimed music producer, D.J. The heroic Static witnessed Rubber Band Man going after Ice Pack and attempted to intervene.  This would prove to be the first in numerous altercations between the two.  Static prevailed and the Rubber Band Man was apprehended; while DJ Rock was exposed as a thief and fraud.    

The Rubber Band Man would later escape form prison and would have further dealings with Static.  Eventually, Rubber Band Man became something of an antihero and aided Static in dealing with the villainous schemes of his older brother, Ebon.  

Actor Kadeem Hardison provided the voice for The Rubber Band Man, with the villain turned hero first appearing in the fifth episode of the first seasons of Static Shock, ‘They’re Playing My Song.’

“Let’s make snacks!” He lifts you up with strong arms, carrying you bridal style toward the kitchen. He squats down again, still cradling you, as he picks up the ice pack he’d scattered earlier. He stands, his arms under your shoulders and knees, and kisses the tip of your nose. You hide your face in his neck, and sniff.

Cedar.

His sandals slap against the deck as he carries you across. You let your head fall on his shoulder, your eyes slipping closed. He’s carrying you oh so gently, slower than any rubber-wrapped speed shot he usually does.

He side-steps you into the room, softly closing the door behind him. You lift up, expecting to see the kitchen, but you’re surprised.

Here's a breakdown of how I made my Archaic sandals for Link! I don't have many progress photos because of course I was crunching these for no good reason so be prepared for a long description below the post break. I was following the step-by-step process laid out in the book The Sandal Making Guide. If you're looking for a detailed introduction to sandal making, get this book! It tells you all the tools and materials you need and the photos and explanations are super concise and clear.

I started with a plastic wrap and masking tape copy of my leg and foot that I drew the placement and size of the straps on and then transferred it to a paper pattern.

The straps are made from a lovely grainy textured milled veg-tan leather and the footbed and outsole are regular veg-tan leather that I custom dyed. The main foot straps I wet molded to my feet and then marked the placement for the strap slots onto the soles.

Where the foot straps go behind and under the heel, there's a couple small, hidden pieces of elastic that connect them so they can stretch enough for me to slide the sandals on.

The straps and sole layers are contact cemented together with the ends of the straps shaved down to reduce bulk. I trimmed down the sole edges and evened them out with a surform plane since I don't have a belt sander. The last step was to rough up the bottom of the leather soles and contact cement a very thin rubber shoe soling so the sandals actually have some traction 😂

At this point I've walked several con days and at least over 10 miles in them. Overall, they're really comfortable, durable, and the custom fit is so nice! Only downside of this particular style is there is no arch support, so my muscles do get pretty tired and sore after a full day of walking.

Replace 3 elastic in vintage Adidas (part one)

This is the gear a used. Not on picture, a sewing machine, and a pincet.

1 Mark the place in the waistband where I will open the sewing thread. Always on the backside near the center seal. At the left of right of the label

2 Fix the existing thread with a “button stitch “ at either end. If hand stitching, you can make it smaller and meaning a knot. (The mask tape is about 2,5 cm wide)

3 Using a torn knife, open about 2 cm between the button stitches. The masking tape protects the cotton liner

4 clean the removed thread on right and back side.

5 pull out the old elastic with a pincer, starting with lower elastic, cut ✂️ and pull out gentle by hand at one side and using you free and to stretch the waistband lightly . Don’t remove the drawstring if not necessary. If you prefer, you can replace it with a fourth elastic.

6 cut the new elastic at the right length ( see separate posts ) The old elastic was relatively good for this age.

7 attach one end of the elastic on the special needle. If fixed it with a pin 📍 This method is fast when experienced doing, as you can pull backwards! For the first times, fix it with some thread is a los safer, as backwards pulling is possible. Also use this method when the shorts is damaged or repaired.

Once attached, fix the other end with a clothes pin, and enter the needle in the upper tunnel over the drawstring.

8 work the needle through bit by bit, by pusching and stretching the fabric over the needle.alternatively holding top end end. Be careful at the seams of damaged places. Go until make a complete loop and exit, over the drawstring .

9 remove the needle and fix both end so it won’t slide in again. Feel through the fabric with your fingers the elastic did not make turns, and both ends are 3 cm overlapping.

10 using the fines needle 🪡 and a double thread and enter from the inside , between the upper elastic strings so you don’t damage the rubber and use the fabric.

11 make the shortest turn, and enter from the other outside again to the inside of the elastic.

Make a double knot, and continue sewing now going through the elastic and make the shortest turn, but allow advance to the left like making a spiral around the upper rubber.

12 Continue to the end of the overlap. Then stretch the elastic so the windings of the thread loosen a bit. The make a knot like at the beginning. Check the sewing’s and knots!
