Hey, throwing some fun craft stuff here!
I am still working with shoes, and they are FINALLY getting better.
Also, me and Mor finished the boar head. Mor discovered that sculpture is fun, yay! The gead is from papier-mache, so pretty lightweight.
Also crochetted a bunny. Also, at some point before when i was sad, made a spindle, so also spun a bit of yarn to look like it was spun from that bunny.
Showtout to @masterofrecords for being the reason and comrade in crimes.

Here's a breakdown of how I made my Archaic sandals for Link! I don't have many progress photos because of course I was crunching these for no good reason so be prepared for a long description below the post break. I was following the step-by-step process laid out in the book The Sandal Making Guide. If you're looking for a detailed introduction to sandal making, get this book! It tells you all the tools and materials you need and the photos and explanations are super concise and clear.
I started with a plastic wrap and masking tape copy of my leg and foot that I drew the placement and size of the straps on and then transferred it to a paper pattern.
The straps are made from a lovely grainy textured milled veg-tan leather and the footbed and outsole are regular veg-tan leather that I custom dyed. The main foot straps I wet molded to my feet and then marked the placement for the strap slots onto the soles.
Where the foot straps go behind and under the heel, there's a couple small, hidden pieces of elastic that connect them so they can stretch enough for me to slide the sandals on.
The straps and sole layers are contact cemented together with the ends of the straps shaved down to reduce bulk. I trimmed down the sole edges and evened them out with a surform plane since I don't have a belt sander. The last step was to rough up the bottom of the leather soles and contact cement a very thin rubber shoe soling so the sandals actually have some traction 😂
At this point I've walked several con days and at least over 10 miles in them. Overall, they're really comfortable, durable, and the custom fit is so nice! Only downside of this particular style is there is no arch support, so my muscles do get pretty tired and sore after a full day of walking.
I know this is super wordy with not a lot of WIP photos, feel free to ask any questions you might have!

Far from done, and it's bound to have a shit ton of issues but hey it's my very first one so i will get better with time!
It's loosely based on an edwardian design but I'm mostly using scrap materials i had laying around. More as a proof of concept and way to test if the shoe last works or not.
So far it's been ridiculously easy which makes me think i forgot something or the next part will suck ass.

Shoe cobbling pdfs!
Was doing a little browsing on repairing rubber shoe soles and it led me down this rabbithole. I thought I'd share what I've found to tide everyone over until the next embroidery page update, which may be another few days. Taken from The Shoe Service Institute of America website, a pair of free pdfs!
First is The Shoe Repairer's Manual written and compiled by Robert Sieburth circa 1936. The second is Shoe Repairing by Henry Karg, circa 1965. I'm still flipping through them, but the subject of cobbling and shoe repair is a fascinating one.

Well my leather arrived today so onward to the next episode on how to make a pair of welted boots
First step of course is cutting the leather. I used a 1.5mm thick veg tan leather for the upper and the welt and a piece of 3.5 mm leather that I bought a couple of years ago for the insoles. I think it is semi-aniline but I am not sure
Tumblr media
Sharp eyed folks will spot that I redrew the pattern a bit. My seamstress ass automatically gave the first version a 1cm seam allowance but with leather you often only need a 0.5 cm allowance except for the bottom of the upper that needs a bigger one to be able to fold around the last later.
Then a bit of grooving and a bit of dyeing for the uppers and I left them alone for now as the dye dried
Tumblr media
Onward to the insoles. I spend an inordinate amount of time very carefully grooving and carving those babies to create that little ledge that I will later use to attach my uppers to the insoles... the end result will probably give any professional shoemaker nightmares but I think they are serviceable enough
Tumblr media
Then making my sewing holes with an awl. Again not sure if this is proper shoemaking procedure but I am making half of this up as I go
Tumblr media
Attaching those babies to the lasts with some teeny tiny 1mm nails
Tumblr media
And then at last as the afternoon came to a close and I had to hurry to jiu- jitsu class I managed to quickly give the uppers a rub down with some sheabutter ( why shea butter? It's what I had on hand) .

I almost forgot, any suggestions for lolita shoemaking?
I've caved and decided if I want cute shoes to fit, I'm just gonna have to (reluctantly) learn how to make shoes. I've got some 3D printable lasts I plan to cast and use, and am excited to get started.
Tl;dr: having huge feet sucks in general but hopefully it gets better if I'm able to make them!

How Weil made shoes, bunny edition
First, clean up the mess from all the previous craft that is going on for two moths by this point. Secure the help of a bunny, because you are dealing with too much at this point.
Tumblr media
Now you can cut out your sole leather. Bunny still helps.
Tumblr media
Another break times! Cut something for the bunny from your window herb garden, make some tea.
Tumblr media
Than, because my sole leather is way too thick, I am skiving it down. (Love this photo of a knife bunny, very Mor mood)
Tumblr media
Next day, you name the bunny Mimi and give her a cute bow. You are making so many holes in this sole, and the movement needs to be very precise. Also watch a lot of craft videos.
Tumblr media
Cut out the uppers. Be very tired.
Tumblr media
Sew the seam on the uppers.
Tumblr media
Space out, sew the whole shoe together, wet it, swear a lot to turn it inside out.
Tumblr media
Let it dry, add the toggles, oil them. (Mimi went to help Mor instead at this point)
Tumblr media
I really want to try some other leather for the sole (something softer), and I still can't make the seams really tight.... but that will do for now. I am getting some break from crafting. Just for a bit. Need some rest.
Will come back later with more shoemaking stuff.
