Using a crochet stitch marker to see where I started punching holes in the bottom layer so I don't have to keep flipping and checking. 👍

Repairing Turn Shoes
Notes from this video by The Welsh Viking and Nicole Rudolph.
Soak the leather and grease your awl
Sole leather is different from regular leather. For turn shoes the sole leather needs to be not too thick. Insole leather is sole leather but thinner and can work for turn shoes.
Upper can be glued to the sole to keep them together while sewing
Fishing line or wire can be a substitute for boar bristle (needles can quickly get too chunky). Boar bristles can sometimes be bought at fishing tackle shops.
#because this is where I'm storing my notes now apparently#leather working#turn shoes#reenactment#notes#save for later

How's the isopod bag practice phase coming along? I've never done any leatherwork before and wanted to ask someone about their experience before I make any attempts.
Welp, I made one small leather bag, and that's it 😬
I still have a leather bag kit that got advertised with real leather, but I'm not to Shure about that... Also didn't work with it yet...
Punching the holes you need for sewing is kind of loud, so I didn't do anything more yet. And cutting the leather in a way that looks tidy was VERY hard... If you want to do the isopod bag, I'd advise you to do a few practice pieces... (The artist has some free patterns, and a YouTube channel)
All in all I enjoyed it. Seeing how everything goes together and forms a bag was so cool! But without a workshop I'll won't be working with leather a lot.

Working on rebinding a paper back of the hobbit, this is state of the cover I have so far. Have to figure out how to get the mountain below the dragon and what to put on the back.

They leather key fob is dope as shit! They fact that you made it is super cool! You better keep us update on projects like this one and any other work you do on this one!
Oh, thanks! I made it a while ago and just posted it recently because someone asked to see it. I’ve been having fun with it though! It’s nice to just focus on one thing for a while.
I have done some other stuff since then, just not much that I really want to show. Lots of stitching practice and some other bits and pieces. I do have some plans/projects that I’ve been working on but I need to buy some hardware.
I did make this bracelet I made a while back that I’m kinda proud of:

I've been doing leather working for a couple of weeks and I have gathered some tricks
1. Water is now your best friend
2. Count the holes. Count them again. And again.
3. Different thicknesses of leather are used for different things
4. Doesn't matter if your leather is slightly patchy after being dyed, it'll be fine
5. You don't need all of the expensive tools
6. An electric sander can help remove the excess on seen edges
Does anyone have some more tips?

Husbff made a thing!
It's a waxed leather notebook holder. It could be decorated with pyrography, or he could make one out of embossed leather. It's water resistant, the strap can be closed two ways, there's a flap to keep your pens from flying out. He spent a good chunk of the last week figuring out the design and finished it today.

So I've started dabbling in leather working/crafting.
I figured tumblr would be a rad place to document my adventures. But basically this is my new current hyper fixation hobby fueled by spite. Spite that I won't get into for reasons just yet. But hey my therapist gave me her stamp of approval so hell yeah. Anyways, today I was just farting around, messing with some leather scraps and practising cutting different thicknesses, punching holes, and doing hand stitching. Here are some of the lil pieces I stitched!
and here's a lil pocket i sewed together :D
One of the first things I did too was practice edge burnishing on this lil strap. Is fun!
Anyway, that's all I have right now. Can confirm I am HOOKED and I can't wait to play with more and actually make somethinggg. I will update yall as I go!

so the harness I bought was a little too big for me—like, it fits, but only when the buckles are at the tightest setting, so imo the end tails just look a little clumsy. I tried to exchange it for the next smallest size but the shop didn’t have them in stock in that design, and suggested that a local leather worker that might be able to make adjustments… but the only one I found is like. a tailor who happens to specialize in leather? and his website is just slightly too wholesome for me to be like “yeah absolutely book me in”? 😅
anyway I did some googling on the way home and it seems like potentially I could just make the adjustments myself… I own an x-acto knife, leather needles, and black upholstery thread already… but OOF I’m a little nervous to just start hacking at it!!
#leatherwork#leather working#if anyone happens to have tips and tricks#I’m gonna work up the nerve soon I swear

While I do like my most recent pictures, the longer I look at them the more "things to fix" I see ^^'
This is the rabbit hole of crafting I suppose
