VOL 2- NOCTURNE. An 18+ zine
Download vol 1 here
What is Nocturne? Nocturne is a collaborative zine for 18+ therians, otherkin, theriomythics, alterhumans, nonhumans, holotheres, etc. whose identities creep into every facet of their life in this case the bedroom!
For the first edition, we didn’t want to focus on one particular theme, however with this edition coming out around summer time for the northern hemisphere and winter for the southern hemisphere, we’re going for a “Survival Guide” and duality theme. This can include works about camping, foraging, hunting, or the wilderness in general. Do you experience a seasonal coat change? Do you need to be sheared? What do you need to survive?
Note: If you find a theme restrictive- as long as it is related to your kinks/fetishes and animality, send whatever!
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES: Due to the nature of the zine, all participants must be 18 years old or over to participate. By contributing, you certify you are at least 18 years of age. Please provide your name and social media for accountability purposes & credit. If you wish to remain anonymous in the final zine let us know!
Do you want to contribute but don't feel up for the workload? We need small "filler" graphics! Message @horsebark on Tumblr or email [email protected] if this is something you'd like to do!
Written submissions may take any form, but must be under 10 pages (12pt font, double spaced) and submit as a PDF. Artwork must be submit in PNG format- keep in mind it will be placed in an 8.5x11 page with 1 inch margins. You are welcome to submit up to 5 works!
Submissions will open 01/05/2025 at 10 AM CST and will close at 12AM CST 05/05/2025. Please submit through this form. Provided everything goes smoothly, Nocturne’s second edition will be available for free on 06/01/2025.
If you wish to rescind a submission, please email [email protected] to let us know! Feel free to reach out to the email with any questions, or message @horsebark here on tumblr. We look forward to another great zine!

i don't mean to be smug here, but im not really worried about the death of literary culture – there are millions of words of good literature that have already been published, that many good writers appreciate and take advantage of the transfornative ability to freely distribute outside the confines of the publishing industry on the internet and that the novel is a very historically contigent form. humanity ebbs and flows on the importance of forms often and still continues to create radical, experimental and deeply responsive art for its times. the loss of the novel's prestige is both exaggerated and perhaps worth grieving but not worth making terrifying pronouncements about the future of human intellectual capacity. when it comes to reading or literacy as a skill, well, the last few decades has seen a massive expansion of literacy in the developing world generally, and in china and russia – suggesting that mass investment in adult and child literacy is a vastly more successful and direct intervention than some kind of speculative revival of a frankly historically elitist culture.

Boy Torture Scale - REVISED
Top 10 Books of 2024: Rated!
Serious Weakness by Porpentine Charity Heartscape - 10/10
A+, extra credit, there is so much boy torture per page here. A little girl torture at the end too. This book sets the bar. We have psychological, physical, sexual, and all different ways in all different dynamics. Top Boy Torture List Ever
An Exchange of Hostages by Susan R. Matthews - 9.5/10
The only thing preventing this book from reaching 10/10 is that I read Serious Weakness this year. It is about a man who reluctantly lets his father send him to torture school. The torture school provides him a slave-servant with the secondary purpose of spying on him. Quite a great bit of torture of boys and others.
The Vampire Lestat by Anne Rice - 7/10
There is a respectable amount of boy torture in this volume of TVC. For some of it you have to use your imagination such as what the coven did to Nicki. The sexual undertones of Magnus's kidnapping and turning of Lestat bumps this up to a 7.
Foreigner by C.J. Cherryh - 6/10
I feel this series is ripe for the potential of boy torture. It is a science-fiction novel (1 out of many in a series) with very deep worldbuilding including cultural exchange, tensions, and war. Also, sci-fi gadgets. Forcing a man to ride a steed until his legs hurt very badly is kind of torture, but I was more interested in the worldbuilding and cultures than the sexual aspects. Thank you to @twinkubus for jogging my memory that there was literal torture in this book! Our main character is poisoned and spends quite a while indisposed because of this, and in the latter quarter of the book he is tied up and tortured in a small room. Overall my impression obviously was more focused on the amazing worldbuilding, but the boy torture was also present and wonderful.
Captain Ni'mat's Last Battle by Mohamed Leftah - 5/10
There is not really torture in this, except for perhaps psychological. However, there is a boy, and he is not exactly having a great time in a great relationship.
Rosemary's Baby by Ira Levin - 3/10
There isn't actually any boy torture here that I can remember (except what you can imagine a satanic cult might get up to with boys in private). However, the psychological girl torture is quite well written so there have to be points awarded.
Unrated (No boy torture as such or I don't remember)
1. Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler
2. Frankenstein in Baghdad by Ahmed Sadaawi
Unrated (Due to my cowardice when facing child MCs):
1. Let The Right One In by John Ajvide Lindqvist
2. Blood on the Tracks by Shuzo Oshimi

saw a tiktok where some american woman was like 'did anyone else grow up with a naked mom' meaning that she would see her mother naked growing up a lot for some reason or another and all the comments were like 'yes and that's why I'm traumatized' or 'that's sick', 'eww' or whatever... the naked body of your mother traumatized you? the way sauna culture could heal so many societies of their ills.... I am so grateful to have always been able to see realistic human bodies naked & grow up in a culture where nudity is not inherently sexualized....
