My previous blog post was titled 'You Can Find Inspiration In Anything', as the weeks of the course go on it is becoming more and more evident that this phrase relates to pretty much every aspect of the fashion industry. Fashion literally borrows inspiration from every culture. Yesterday's lecture and seminar placed emphasis on fashion photography itself and what aspects create an effective image.The range of different fashion images is too vast to begin to list as the world acts a backdrop for a fashion photographer, however where to start when considering what makes a good fashion image would probably begin with nine major factors- concept, props, narrative, reference, location, casting, lighting, colour and composition.

In order to put this to the test after the seminar I began researching iconic images in fashion and my attention was drawn to the work of Elaine Constantine. The photographer offered a vibrant representation of British youth culture in the 1990s and early 2000s in a time where a grunge aesthetic was on trend. My particular attention was drawn to this image for The Face, taken in 1997 and named 'Sarf Coasting'.

When relating the image to the nine factors I have previous listed I believe that props, narrative, reference, location, colour and composition are what made this photograph so successful. Use of the location and prop project a typical British summer time to me. The narrative and composition of the model bring life to the photo and evoke nostalgic connotations. Anna Wintour once decsribed Elaine as "one of the most talented fashion photographers of her generation" and I really believe this timeless image captures the photographers talent and reflects a positive vibe represent British youth culture.
