I-- I know we make fun of Resume/Renesme/whatever the fuck, but the other option was fucking EJ FOR EDWARD AND JACOB.

I don't know if you've been asked this question before (sorry if you have 🤦‍♀️) but I was wondering if you think people would still make fun of the name Renesmee (saying Rigatoni, Retrograde etc) if it weren't associated with Twilight? Or do you think people would still do that regardless?

I suspect people would still make jokes about it in the same way people used to (do they still do?) joke about Benedict Cumberbatch by calling him like Benadryl Cabbagepatch or whatever. Some people just have unusual, memorable (and meme-able!) names.

Within the Twilight world though, I think part of the problem with 'Renesmee' as a name is that it's just SO jarring compared to all the other names. "Renesmee Cullen" wouldn't feel especially weird in say, Hogwarts or Panem. Those places are full of whimsical fantasy names.

But Twilight doesn't really do those kind of names. Some of the most powerful beings in the Twilight world are named things like Alice, Edward, Jane, Benjamin, Chelsea and Kate. Even the visiting vampires have common, perhaps even stereotypical, names for their countries for the most part (Siobhan, Liam, Vladimir . . . although that's more Russian than Romanian. Kebi and Amun are very old Ancient Egyptian names, etc). The other less common names don't feel as jarring in context. I've never met anyone in real life named 'Quil,' but it clearly references the Quileute tribe so blends right in within the story. 'Aro' is not Greek or Roman but it's short and simple and so not distracting. "Renesmee" stands out -- as it was intended to do! But perhaps it does it a little too well. It constantly pulled me out of the story, personally.

It also, IMO, feels wildly out of character for Bella Swan of all people to pick. This feels like SM named the child, not that Bella the character did. I will die on the hill that Bella the character wouldn't have done the "needs a special name" thing, especially since she was planning on naming a boy Edward Jacob/Junior! Bella Swan would have named this child Elizabeth after Edward's bio mom and Elizabeth Bennet. I just feel it in my bones. SM as the author said "no human name would work for me" and made one up. As is her right! It just didn't feel Bella-ish to me (for the record, EJ 100% did feel like exactly what Bella would pick).

So I think that's why the RenesMemes live on. 1. It's a memorably unusual name, 2. It doesn't fit within its own world, 3. It feels out of character for "born 35 and getting more middle aged" Bella to pick.

what would the cullens do if renesmee got her revenge on Jacob for murdering her twin brother? That thought has been killing me.

Anon's probably referring to this post. The long and short of the premise is that if Renesmee had a twin brother (Edward Jacob for lack of originality here and the canonical name Renesmee would have gotten with a Y chromosome) then things would likely go poorly with EJ being murdered offscreen by Jacob for ah getting in the way.

There might have been another post about Renesmee then getting her bloody revenge by murdering Jacob in coldblood somewhere but I can't track it down right now.

As for what would happen, we'd get something similar to And Then There Were None by me and @therealvinelle.

The Cullens

They don't care about Jacob and his increased presence in their lives as the years go on gets increasingly weird as opposed to less weird. I don't see them warming up to him and on the whole the Cullens are... very pragmatic when it comes to their concern towards others especially in the face of death.

Especially when they're already facing the loss of a grandson/nephew.

If they don't know the reason behind Jacob's death they say it's a tragic loss, of course, and are very concerned about Bella's wellbeing but they're more concerned about dealing with the tragedy of Edward Jacob's death as well as grouping the family back together.

Jacob's a concern but he's less of one to them especially in a time like this.

If they know Renesmee did it they begin to suspect the worst of Jacob (both the murder of EJ as well as... untowards attention towards Renesmee and perhaps EJ as well) and are now not only unbelievably furious and grieving but dealing with the kind of trauma that comes after having failed someone so badly.

They're a mess but they wouldn't turn on Renesmee for having done something about Jacob.

Bella

Post canon, Bella is highly dependent emotionally on Jacob Black and his sudden death would have her spiraling. She likely sees foul play and blames the Volturi and, if that proves an unsatisfying explanation, begins to blame the family surrounding her who she sees being remarkably unphased by Jacob's death.

As accusations fly regarding Jacob and his attention towards her children, Bella will become increasingly hostile to the Cullens as both her image of them shatters, she deals with the death of her child, and the death of Jacob whose image has to remain rosy for her.

Depending how this goes, Bella may or may not try to murder off the family including her surviving daughter (especially if she learns that Renesmee's the one who um did it).

Starting the moment they meet up to the moment when it all ends, through quests, through lasting relationships, through families made and forged in hardship, they are brother and sister.

The Homes of Leo and Calypso

This is the first ever PJO story I wrote, after HOO finished up but before TOA started and it is dated as such. I love Leo/Calypso ship and the little family I wrote for them. This is just the many ups and downs I thought they would have as they grew up and as Calypso slowly became more mortal. They move around quite a bit together and have three beautiful daughters and one mischievous little boy. I just wanted to give them a happy little ending.

Twilight:

Child’s Song

This fic got me into Twilight again, it’s basically an au in which “Bella got pregnant with Renesmee in New Moon, found the Cullens, and left her with them”. She goes on to have a life before Edward finds her and they get married and have a little boy. I hate the super fast demon pregnancy, so Renesmee and EJ are more human, tho Renesmee takes on more vampire traits as she gets older and EJ becomes more human as he grows. There’s a chapter and song for each of the four family members.

Junebug

This is the story of how Claire Young came back to La Push and fell in love with Quil Ateara after sixteen years of being separated. Claire gets to be with her family again while she falls in love with the reclusive older man, she rekindles her friendship with Renesmee, and she just gets to be a teenager while living with her Aunt Emily and Uncle Sam. She learns the Legends and her place in them. Part 3 of the Imprint Anthology.

The Angel and The One

Kim and Jared’s story in the pack, how they fell in love, how Kim learns about the imprint, how they grow up together as high school sweethearts. Kim has a lot of mental health issues, but Jared helps her heal and take care of herself. They eventually see their own happily ever after.

Also there is the story of Kati and Jay, childhood best friends that fall in love while separated because of school. They are a non-imprint imprint couple. Both of them know of the magic surrounding them, but neither of them possess it, doesn’t stop them from having a love as strong as their family members. Part 4 of the Imprint Anthology

Landslide

The Jacob/Leah story. This is probably my favorite of the bunch. Pet 5 of the Imprint Anthology, Leah is working forward from Billy’s death while Jacob is stuck back in time before his father died. Just a story about love and grieving told in alternate povs, it made me love these two as a couple and ship it even harder.

Part two is Mackenzie Black moving away to college and falling in love with someone who has no idea what they’re getting into with Mack.

Power Rangers to Battle Godzilla

Assuming Renesmee was Elizabeth or even EJ (or maybe twins) fully human with normal growth (let's assume they are more like (part 1) wolves high healing power unattractive smell) what would the family dynamic be like with these human children? what would happen when they became adults, whether or not they would be turned into vampires? I think an attempt to change them would break the family, I can imagine Rosalie and Edward being totally against it.

Would having an almost 100% human baby in the family make Rosalie think about adoption? How would Bella react to the thought of watching her children die?

It would be A LOT more interesting, IMHO.

Part of the failure, for me, of the Renesmee story is how inhuman and weird she is. It's like she's supposed to be the child all the Cullens have longed for and been missing in their lives, but then SM went our of her way to make as mature and otherworldly as possible. Carlisle and Esme have adopted children and adoption is valid and all that, but adopting basically-adult vampires is not the same as adopting a child and being there through all their milestones and teaching them and guiding them and then Renesmee . . . no one really gets to do that either? She just talks and walks and dances and reads all on her own one day. The Cullens STILL don't have the experience of raising a child with her. I mean Edward and Bella even joke like "lol the only parents in the world who don't need sleep and our baby already sleeps through the night hahahaha" and it's like . . . blargh. So unnecessarily perfect and convenient. (I get that SM as a tired mom of three little kids when she wrote it was probably writing her own personal fantasy but it's not narratively satisfying).

So a human or mostly human baby would be way more interesting? Maybe Jasper can't be around her much, maybe newborn Bella can't. She says Renesmee smells good in a non-food way, but maybe the human Elizabeth or whatever does smell like food and there's all this angst. Bella being a vampire would actually have a consequence and would matter.

And yes, the issue of whether or not to turn her would be a huge dramafest. Edward and Rosalie against it, Bella for it (because being a vampire is so great!). Bella's looking at it like "I can't bear to lose my daughter someday" and Edward's looking at it like "she gets to live the human life we can't." I guess ultimately it would be up to Elizabeth to make the choice for herself. I'd like to imagine she'd talk one on one to each of her family members to get their perspective and that her parents would honor the decision she comes to. I feel like she'd have a better sense of "what she wants" than Bella did; or maybe if she does choose to become a vampire she at least waits until she's out of her teens so she can live a more adult life in the human world.
