Aca Top 10: Disney Heroes — VoicePlay music video
youtube
Disney animated movies are probably best known for their music, and almost all of them have a showstopping tune for their main characters. Singing or listening to those songs can feel empowering. So, sit back, relax, and spend a few minutes being inspired and entertained by these goofballs.
Details:
title: Aca Top 10 — Disney Heroes (feat. J.None)
original songs / performers: "Go the Distance" by Roger Bart as Hercules in Hercules (1997); [0:37] "When Will My Life Begin?" by Mandy Moore as Rapunzel in Tangled (2010); [0:55] "You'll Be In My Heart" by Glenn Close as Kala & Phil Collins as the narrator in Tarzan (1999); [1:24] "One Jump Ahead" by Brad Kane as Aladdin in Aladdin (1992); [1:44] "Colors of the Wind" by Judy Kuhn as Pocahontas in Pocahantas (1995); [2:06] "Reflection" by Lea Salonga as Fa Mulan in Mulan (1998); [2:33] "Part of Your World" by Jodi Benson as Ariel in The Little Mermaid (1989); [3:00] "How Far I'll Go" by Auliʻi Cravalho as Moana in Moana (2016); [3:23] "I Just Can't Wait to Be King" by Jason Weaver as Simba, Rowan Atkinson as Zazu, & Laura Williams as Nala in The Lion King (1994); [3:40] "Let It Go" by Idina Menzel as Elsa in Frozen (2013)
written by: "Go the Distance" by Alan Menken & David Zippel; "When Will My Life Begin?" by Alan Menken & Glenn Slater; "You'll Be In My Heart" by Phil Collins; "One Jump Ahead" by Alan Menken & Tim Rice; "Colors of the Wind" by Alan Menken & Stephen Schwartz; "Reflection" by Matthew Wilder & David Zippel; "Part of Your World" by Alan Menken & Howard Ashman; "How Far I'll Go" by Lin-Manuel Miranda; "I Just Can't Wait to Be King" by Elton John & Tim Rice; "Let It Go" by Kristen Anderson-Lopez & Robert Lopez
arranged by: Geoff Castellucci
release date: 21 September 2017
My favorite bits:
J.None's clear, hopeful tone on "Go the Distance"
the rhythm section being confused as to where they're supposed to be looking before their parts begin
Eli shrugging off his own muscles compared to Earl and J 💪
Layne's little finger wiggle from the beginning of "You'll Be In My Heart" being redirected at Geoff
the crunchy harmonies on the ♫ "Whoa-o-o-oa, number seven" ♫ transition
Layne's scampering percussion riff in "One Jump Ahead"
Geoff looking over at Layne while singing ♫ "why he grins" ♫, and Layne shrugging
J's flirty little wave to the camera during "Reflection"
Eli and J following the lyrics for ♫ "jumping, dancing" ♫
that lovely bell chord on ♫ "street street stree-ee-ee-eet" ♫
the back row dramatically looking left and right as they sing the words
everyone's befuddlement at Geoff taking the lead on the beginning of "Let It Go" ("That's not your song, bass man.")
Earl's adorable power pose at the end
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Trivia:
○ VoicePlay had recorded and/or performed several of these songs previously:
"How Far I'll Go" was in their "Moana medley" video just one month before.
"I Just Can't Wait To Be King" was included in The King Returns medley on their 2012 album "Once Upon an Ever After". It was also part of the "aca-Disney" mashup they created for the Disney On Broadway 20th anniversary celebration.
"When Will My Life Begin" was in their condensed Tangled performance at the 2015 Disney Social Media Moms Celebration.
"Let It Go" was part of their "Wow! Vol. 1" medley during the 2015 Sing-Off tour. Layne also snuck it into one memorable rendition of "Road Trip".
○ A couple of these songs were revisited in later videos:
"Part of Your World" was, of course, included in their "Little Mermaid medley" with Rachel Potter in 2020.
They recorded a full version of "Go the Distance" with EJ Cardona in 2021.
○ Eli's incredible riff and declaration of "Xtina for life!" at the end of the "Reflection" excerpt are in reference to the pop version of the song that Christina Aguilera recorded for the movie's end credits.
○ J.None had sung "You'll Be In My Heart" as part of his audition process to perform at Disney World in 2013. He was cast as Nakawa in the Festival of the Lion King live show.
○ The YouTube description includes a parody verse for "Reflection" — "Whooooooo is that Earl I see… / Staring straight at Eli? / When will my REFLECTION show / Jellied ham and RICE!!? / Yummmmmmmmm… "
○ The guys are all wearing graphic t-shirts featuring characters from the movies included in the countdown:
J.None — Hercules flexing his biceps, surrounded by a circle of text reading, "Don't act like you're not impressed"
Earl — Pua the pig from Moana with the inscription "I'm no bacon"
Eli — Ariel and Sebastian in a circular frame with "Little Mermaid" in jagged heavy metal style lettering across the top
Geoff — Genie from Aladdin with a microphone in hand and a blue neon sign reading "Applause" emerging from his shoulders
Layne — Mufasa's face from The Lion King with the word "king" in black letters across the top
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
○ This is the first in a mini-series within their "Aca Top 10" series, that was followed by countdowns for "Disney Sidekicks" and "Disney Villains" over the next year and a half.

Voiceplay-adjacent Visuals - Mele Kalikimaka
Time for the final posts of my 12 Days Of Christmas In July series!
Mele Kalikimaka was released on the 6th of December, 2020, and so far it is the only cover on Geoff's channel that features vocals from someone other than himself, as this features a singing trio known as The American Sirens! I'll talk about them a little more in a bit, but really I'm just keen to start this post, so let's go!
Tumblr media
Cute ornament!
Oh and btw this was filmed at "Orange studios", which VoicePlay have used at least a couple times before for video shoots, including for Hoist The Colours!
Tumblr media
Given that this was all filmed in an actual studio, how much of this was an actual office, and how much was put together just for the video? I really don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was at least a decent amount of set design courtesy of Geoff and Kathy for this one, so 10/10 for it!
Tumblr media
(Don't say it don't say it don't say it-)
Also look at the top left section of Geoff's laptop! It's got a VoicePlay sticker on it! <3 (and yes you can actually buy one yourself!)
Tumblr media
So cute! (I'm talking about the Christmas tree of course, what else? 😜😂 )
(Okay but seriously the tree is adorable and I want one just like it!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pretty smooth transition!
(Also as if one necklace wasn't enough, now he has another! (I'm kidding - never too many accessories! 😝))
Tumblr media
A lot of people in the comments absolutely were loving Geoff's facial expressions in this one, and so of course I gotta highlight them myself! As one commenter simply put it, this is "that look you give when your startled by people singing along with you that didn't know they were there" 😆
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh Geoff, how I love you 😂
Also, to quote another commenter, "love that his first impulse upon hallucinating is to sing countermelody" XD
Tumblr media
Alright, time to meet The American Sirens!
The blonde lady sitting down is Lindsay Flick Cardona, the brunette lady behind her is Alejanda Martinez, and the lady at the back (on the far right) is Rachel Copeland-Evans. I don't really know who Lindsay is (I'm guessing no relation to EJ and Omar? (EDIT: Oh nvm she's EJ's wife apparently!)), but Alejandra and Rachel have both starred in videos for PattyCake Productions! (Also Rachel Copeland had a brief cameo in VoicePlay's Little Mermaid Medley video as the "this one longing to be thinner" individual during the Poor Unfortunate Souls bit).
Tumblr media
I've done fanart of this screenshot!
Also another comment I gotta include: "I love Geoff absolutely nailing the face of 'I didn’t realise this was a fantasy i had but i’m not complaining that it’s happened'"
Tumblr media
Shoutout to Alejandra who did the choreography for herself, Rachel, and Lindsay for this video, and shoutout to the fact that it looks like it's at least inspired by proper Hawaiian dancing, and it's not just stereotypical hula or whatever! And their outfits are really pretty as well! (I have a teeny bit of experience with Polynesian dancing, which has similarities, from when I was like 11 years old)
Tumblr media
Last year I attempted to learn the choreography from this video, and come this December I'm probably gonna try to learn it again! (Any excuse to rewatch it, lol)
Tumblr media
"A very merry Christmas tooo-"
Tumblr media
"-youuuuuuuu..."
The fancy lights, microphones, and decorations are gone, and so are the ladies, but his green necklace remains!
Tumblr media
And the tree has some new ornaments! Was it all just a dream?...
Not a super long post, since it's not a long video, but honestly it's a sentimental favourite of mine, especially since I knew this one since not long after it was released, and it's just a simple, feel-good cover, with a lovely video to boot! (Oh and the fact that it's very applicable to Australian Christmases also helps, lol). Three more videos to go!

this performance. . . GUYS. when i say i'm crying i'm not being hyperbolic i'm. . . stunned. speechless. Joshua castille's emotions in his motions and signs, EJ Cardona's signing 'every instant' and the last 'one day out there' adding to the impact of the lines. . . the entire song itself and how it embodies being a disabled person. we don't just stare from a window we stare from rooftops and tops of bell towers.
this is just beautiful.

2013 VoicePlay spring tour roundup
VoicePlay's spring 2013 tour was shorter than their previous fall tour – just five weeks – and mostly stuck to the southeastern part of the country, but that didn't stop them from packing in the fun. They made up the concert postponed by Hurricane Sandy, visited family and friends along the way, and documented a lot of their downtime on social media. Some of the guys were particularly excited about a new short-form video platform called Vine.
Showtimes:
They started close to home with a student workshop and a concert in Lake City, FL.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Geoff and Eli got up early to chat with the local access morning show folks in Cullman, AL and promote their concert that evening.
Some venues have extensive backstage areas with unexpected benefits.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some… not so much.
No matter what, though, there's always some waiting involved.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which can be alleviated by creating your own silliness, or fended off by middle schooler screams (headphone warning).
.
On the road:
The boys left a sticker on the giant sparkplug at the South of the Border tourist attraction in South Carolina, as is traditional.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Long drives might get tedious after a few weeks, but the scenery can be very pretty.
The aromas aren't always so nice, though, especially with six guys (and occasionally a dog) in the van. So if you've ever wondered what the VoicePlay fellas smell like, apparently sometimes it's "vanilla and moonlight".
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The theater kids of a cappella enjoy a bit of dress-up wherever they can find it, even if that's in the toy department during a supply run on their day off.
Tony's adorable terrier Fletcher went along for the middle leg of the tour to El Paso.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The cuteness didn't stop the guys from getting goofy during the long stretches of driving or late night shopping excursions, though.
No trip through Texas is complete without a stop at a Buc-ee's for provisions. (Which prompted Eli to give a shoutout to former 4:2:Five member Matthew "Bucky" Buckner who's been making cameos recently.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The boys popped home for a few days just in time to see Rachel Potter in concert (with friend and future VoicePlay collaborator EJ Cardona). Layne and his then-girlfriend got a little tipsy and silly.
Fewer shows on the tour might have been easier on their vocal cords, but it also meant more long stretches in the van between gigs. At least it had a video game setup.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
Feeding the beasts:
○ Earl doing restaurants' eating challenges continued to be A Thing.
Earl hot wing challenge (Layne's YouTube) The "blazin' challenge" at Buffalo Wild Wings (a dozen spicy wings in under 6 minutes) was no problem, even playing injured. He was awarded a t-shirt and the onlookers' respect.
(Eli's Vine) He polished off another 32-ounce steak at a Texas Roadhouse.
(Eli's Vine) A tex-mex plate and beer-rita on Cinco de Mayo was easy peasy. (Followed by much silliness from everyone.)
(VoicePlay's Twitter) He was only defeated by the 72-ounce steak at The Big Texan Steak Ranch in Amarillo. He gave it a solid try, though.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
○ This one's more of a not-eating-everything-at-once challenge, but when your percussionist's little sister is a professional baker, you've gotta visit and stock up for the road while you're in town.
○ Lunchtime ambience is important, no matter where you are.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
○ It's good to acknowledge the fans, no matter how famous you get.
○ And sometimes you just need to share your thoughts with the world, no matter how banal. (That's what social media is for, after all.)

Voiceplay Visuals: ACA Top 10 Disney Heroes
A little bit of a shorter post, but there will certainly be some longer ones coming, don't you worry about that!
Released in September 2017 (just a little over a month after the Moana Medley), this was J None's 3rd collaboration with Voiceplay as a featured guest (after the Scars To Your Beautiful/All Time Low mashup and Something Just Like This). Not that you'd be able to tell if not for the title, because 1, J None fit right in with the group since day 1 imo, and 2, he's on the left-most position in the back row, rather than the centred position that guest artists usually take when VP are in their 3-2 configuration for a video (if you want more of me rambling about vocalist positionings in Voiceplay videos, go check out this post if you haven't already)
Tumblr media
When Voiceplay do an Aca Top 10 Medley. you can basically guarantee that they will be wearing thematically-appropriate shirts/outfits.
J is wearing a Hercules shirt (especially fitting since he start off the video singing Go The Distance (which VP eventually did a full cover of in 2021 with EJ Cardona)), Earl is wearing a Moana shirt, featuring Pua, Eli is wearing a Little Mermaid shirt (you can't really see it in this shot but it's got a faded picture of Ariel on it), Geoff is wearing an Aladdin shirt with the Genie (I think he took lead on Friend Like Me for the Aladdin medley on VP's Once Upon An Ever After album?), and Layne is wearing a Lion King shirt with Mufasa on it! (So basically Eli and J are the only ones wearing shirts featuring actual protagonists 😆
Basically don't take your eyes off of J, Earl, and Eli during the One Jump Ahead section. Earl points at Eli on "riff-raff", at J None on "street rat", and at Layne on "scoundrel" (though J points over to Eli 😁). Then Earl and J pretend to do karate-chops (and/or some sort of wrestling-style elbow move), while Eli is Concerned(tm).
J with the hilarious and almost creepy face expressions on "just a little snack guys!", followed immediately by Earl pretending to rip apart his shirt on "rip him open..." (I would get screenshots but it's a lot in only a few seconds!)
I know I'm only supposed to be talking about visuals here, but I cannot help but express my love for Geoff's lead vocals on Colours Of The Wind here <3
(Also no hair study for this video, as it's not super different to the Moana Medley (a little flatter maybe))
Earl and J play-flirting with the camera/audience at the start of Reflection is kind of adorable ngl
Tumblr media
The others all reacting to Eli's extended riff at the end of Reflection ("What? Xtina for life!")
Tumblr media
"Legs are required for jumping, dancing!"
Tumblr media
"See the line where the sky meets the sea, it calls me!" (it's calling J and Earl apparently - literally!) (those two are just absolute clowns this whole video, I love it)
Just realized that I'm pretty sure J is subtly doing the "bunny ears" gesture on Geoff at "number 2!" 😂
J could not be any more Extra with his head turns on "everybody look left!" and "everybody look right!" during I Just Can't Wait To Be King XD
Tumblr media
"Everywhere you look I'm, standing in the spotlight!"
Tumblr media
The reaction of the other four to Geoff singing Let It Go (in a beautiful bari-tenor(?) voice might I add) (Let👏Him👏Sing👏It!👏)
Tumblr media
Man I love these idiots <3

Y’all wanna shed some happy ass tears?
Meet Joshua Castille, a man cast to play Quasimodo in one of the few recorded stage productions of Hunchback of Notre Dame, which is much more like the book and 1930s film than the Disney cartoon.
The gargoyle beside him is EJ Cardona -- the voice of Quasimodo.  Like Quasi in the novel, Castille is completely deaf, and communicates his lyrics through ASL, while Cardona is one of the many gargoyles that serves as Quasimodo’s thoughts, his own personal voice.  Honestly, I thought the official cast recording with Michael Arden made me cry -- but watching Castille and Cordona perform “Out There” and “Made of Stone” is a religious experience.
Deaf representation matters.
