Box Office 2023: Punjabi films grossed Rs. 235 crores, Marathi films grossed Rs. 201 crores, Bengali films grossed Rs. 66 crores in 2023
Of late, Bollywood Hungama has reported on the box-office performance of Bollywood, Hollywood, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada cinema in 2023. In this article, we shall discuss the box-office figures of Punjabi, Marathi and Bengali films in the domestic market.
Tumblr media
Punjabi films had a historic 2019 as collections went up to Rs. 249 crores, the highest ever. In 2020, the figure was a mere Rs. 19 crores while it was Rs. 91 crores in 2021. 2022 was a bit disappointing as the total collections were Rs. 147 crores.
2023 figures were the second best of all time as it jumped to Rs. 235 crores. It is lesser than the 2019 numbers but the signs of improvement are there. The footfalls also grew from 1.50 crores in 2022 to 2.3 crores in 2023, which is almost at par with 2017 levels (2.3 crores). The biggest hit of the year, Carry On Jatta 3, was also the biggest Punjabi hit ever, collecting Rs. 54 crores gross. This was followed by Mastaney (Rs. 33 crores) and Kali Jotta (Rs. 21 crores).
The Marathi box-office performance, meanwhile, was underwhelming. It went on a record high of Rs. 268 crores in 2022. But the figure reduced to Rs. 201 crores in 2023. Footfalls are also down from 2.60 crores in 2022 to 2 crores in 2023.
2023 saw Marathi cinema delivering Baipan Bhari Deva, which exceeded all expectations. Backed by Jio Studios, this woman-centric film collected Rs. 92 crores gross in cinemas. It is also the second-biggest Marathi grosser of all time. Sadly, this was the only major blockbuster of the year. The second biggest grosser, Subhedar, collected Rs. 18 cores. Jhimma 2 collected as much as the first part - Rs. 14 crores. It suffered from mixed word of mouth and if the reports were encouraging, it had the potential to cross the Rs. 20 crores mark. What's unfortunate is that a film like Vaalvi got all-round acclaim and yet, it didn't even cross the Rs. 10 crores mark.
The Bengali industry similarly saw a drop in collections - from Rs. 77 crores in 2022 to Rs. 66 crores in 2023. While the footfalls were 70 lakhs in 2022, it was 60 lakhs a year later. Chengiz, the Eid release which was also the first Bengali film to release in Hindi, was the biggest hit of 2023 followed by Raktabeej and Dawshom Awbotaar.

Emerging Infectious Disease Market Size of $339.1 Million In 2022 : Key Players for it in the market| Abbott Laboratories, Becton, Dickinson and Company, Bio Mérieux S.A, Roche  with CAGR of 10.29%
Tumblr media
In the intricate tapestry of the global ecosystem, the emergence of infectious diseases has always been a formidable challenge. As we stand on the precipice of the third decade of the 21st century, the specter of emerging infectious diseases looms larger than ever. The world has witnessed the devastating impact of diseases like HIV/AIDS, Ebola, and the H1N1 influenza, underscoring the critical need for a comprehensive understanding of these complex phenomena. In this blog, we will delve into the realm of emerging infectious diseases, exploring their causes, dynamics, and the collective efforts required to address them.
Defining Emerging Infectious Diseases:
Emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) are those that have recently appeared within a population or those whose incidence or geographic range is rapidly increasing. These diseases can be caused by new or previously unidentified infectious agents, the spread of known agents to new populations, or changes in the environment that facilitate disease emergence.
Causes of Emergence:
Zoonotic Transmission: Many emerging infectious diseases have a zoonotic origin, meaning they are transmitted from animals to humans. The close interaction between humans and wildlife, along with factors such as deforestation and urbanization, can increase the likelihood of such transmissions.
Globalization: The interconnectedness of our world through travel and trade can facilitate the rapid spread of infectious agents across borders. A disease that emerges in one part of the world can quickly become a global threat.
Antimicrobial Resistance: The misuse and overuse of antibiotics have led to the rise of antimicrobial resistance, rendering once-treatable infections more difficult to manage. This poses a significant challenge in the control of infectious diseases.
Environmental Changes: Climate change, deforestation, and alterations in ecosystems can influence the habitats and behaviors of both vectors and hosts, affecting the transmission dynamics of infectious agents.
Human Behavior: Cultural practices, urbanization, and changes in human behavior can contribute to the emergence of infectious diseases. Factors such as population density and sanitation practices play crucial roles.
Dynamics of Emerging Infectious Diseases:
Unpredictability: EIDs often emerge unexpectedly, making it challenging to predict when and where the next outbreak will occur. This unpredictability necessitates vigilant surveillance and preparedness.
Rapid Transmission: With increased global travel, emerging infectious diseases can spread rapidly, crossing continents within a matter of days. This swift transmission highlights the importance of international cooperation in containment efforts.
Impact on Societies: EIDs can have profound social, economic, and political implications. The disruption caused by outbreaks can strain healthcare systems, lead to economic downturns, and exacerbate existing social inequalities.
Collective Responses and Preparedness:
Surveillance and Early Detection: Robust surveillance systems that monitor both human and animal populations are crucial for early detection of potential threats. Timely identification allows for prompt response and containment.
International Collaboration: Given the global nature of emerging infectious diseases, international collaboration is paramount. Sharing information, resources, and expertise enhances the collective ability to respond effectively to outbreaks.
Research and Innovation: Investing in research on infectious agents, transmission dynamics, and vaccines is essential for staying ahead of emerging threats. Innovative technologies and approaches can contribute to more effective prevention and control strategies.
Public Health Infrastructure: Strengthening healthcare systems and public health infrastructure is fundamental to managing emerging infectious diseases. This includes adequate funding, training, and capacity building at local, national, and international levels.

Demand – Drivers and Limitations
Market Demand Drivers:
Economic Burden of Infectious Diseases: Infectious diseases impose a significant economic burden on societies worldwide. The direct costs include expenses related to diagnosis, treatment, hospitalization, and healthcare utilization. Indirect costs arise from lost productivity due to illness, disability, or premature death. Furthermore, infectious disease outbreaks can disrupt trade, tourism, and supply chains, impacting sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, and services.
Government Support to Advance Research and Facilitate Early Diagnosis of Infectious Diseases through Funding and Collaborations: Governments globally have been focused on allocating budgets and providing funding to advance research and early diagnosis in the field of infectious diseases.
Increasing Demand for Point-of-Care (POC) and Syndromic Testing: The demand for point-of-care testing is rising due to its advantages in delivering rapid results and facilitating immediate clinical decision-making. POCT allows for decentralized testing in various healthcare settings, including remote and resource-limited areas, enabling timely diagnosis and treatment initiation. This has driven the adoption of infectious disease diagnostics, particularly in areas with limited laboratory infrastructure.
Technological Advancements in Molecular Diagnostics: Advancements in diagnostic technologies have played a crucial role in the growth of the emerging infectious disease diagnostics market. These advancements include the development of molecular diagnostics, point-of-care testing, immunoassays, and automated systems, among others. These technologies provide rapid and accurate results, enabling healthcare professionals to make timely treatment decisions.
Conclusion:
As we confront the challenges posed by emerging infectious diseases, it is crucial to recognize the dynamic interplay of biological, environmental, and human factors that drive their emergence. A proactive and collaborative approach, grounded in science, innovation, and international cooperation, is essential for mitigating the impact of these diseases on global health. By understanding the complexities of EIDs and working collectively, we can navigate the shadows they cast and build a resilient global health system for the future.

Stuff I’m Looking Forward to in June
How is it already June? This is a fun month with Summer in full swing. In addition to LGBTQ+ Pride Month (June 1-30), Flag Day (June 14), Father’s Day (June 18), Juneteenth (June 19), first day of Summer (June 21) and Eid al-Adha (June 29), here is what’s on my radar for this month:
Movies:
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
I was a huge fan of the 2018 animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (I named it my #7 Movie of 2018) and am excited about the sequel opening 6/2. Watch for my review.
Asteroid City
A Wes Anderson movie, good or bad, is always a big screen cinematic experience. This one takes place in a desert town in 1955. Can’t wait! Opens 6/23.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
I out and out love Indiana Jones and in the 5th movie James Mangold took over directing duties. Don’t care what the buzz has been so far, I am excited to see Harrison Ford return to his iconic role. Opens 6/30.
Music:
Foo Fighters But Here We Are
The 11th album from the Foo Fighters is here. The band’s last album Medicine at Midnight was my #1 Album of 2021. This is their first album after the 2022 passing of drummer Taylor Hawkins. I was lucky enough to see the band at Boston Calling last week and can’t wait for the new album dropping 6/2.
Tommy Stinson’s Cowboys in the Campfire Wronger
Tommy Stinson is rock royalty! As if The Replacements weren’t enough, he also spent time in Guns N’ Roses and Soul Asylum, but he’s been laying low since Bash & Pop. Now he’s back with a new project with Chip Roberts. Their first album drops 6/2. Watch for my review.
Hollywood Vampires Live in Rio
The super group Hollywood Vampires do not tour as often as they should, mainly because the members are Alice Cooper, Joe Perry of Aerosmith, and some guy named Johnny Depp and it’s hard to coordinate their schedules. But when they do tour it’s quite impressive. I’ve been a fan of both of their albums. In 2015, they played in Rio for 100,000 fans for Rock In Rio and they’re joined by some guests too. Live album and blu-ray drops 6/2. Watch for my review.
Extreme Six
Extreme has not released a new album since 2008. I grew up a big fan of them and have seen them live in 1991, 1995, and 2009. I even got to interview former members Paul Geary and Hal LeBeaux for my documentary Life on the V: The Story of V66. Can’t wait for the new album, which drops 6/9.
Queens of the Stone Age In Times New Roman...
QOSTA’s first new album in six years is quite a welcome comeback. Their brand of stoner rock has accompanied me on my trips through the desert and Songs for the Deaf is one of the greatest albums of the 00s. New album drops 6/16.
Books:
Paul McCartney 1964: Eyes of the Storm
Sir Paul’s upcoming photo book is a collection of photos he took during the peak of Beatle-mania. Color me curious! Book release on 6/13.
Conventions:
Collectibles Extravaganza: MusicCons 2023
The good folks who run the Northeast Comic Con also run this run music convention featuring loads of rock stars like Mickey Dolenz, Cherrie Currie, Ritchie Ramone, Michael Des Barres, and more. Con is on from 6/30-7/2 in Boxborough, MA.

DEATH PENALTY – AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL REPORT
On April 26, 2023, just four days after the end of Ramadan and the onset of Eid al Fitri, Mr. Tangaraju Suppiah, 46 years old, was executed by the State of Singapore for drug offences. (1,2) I am not sure what the Singaporean authorities hoped to accomplish with one of the highest per capita state-sponsored murder rates in the world (3). But whatever the rationale, we as a people had and continue to actively participate in officially-sanctioned criminal acts for which the law apparently is weaponized to suit a very narrow view of justice :
“The courts imposed punitive costs orders for late-stage appeals against death sentences and lawyers were investigated for making public statements about their clients. M Ravi, a prominent human rights lawyer known for his defence of death row inmates, faced multiple disciplinary inquiries, contempt of court proceedings and criminal defamation investigations in relation to his work.” (4)
On several occasions over the years, I had written and published on this website, about capital punishment, a most troubling of governmental actions. For what is justice if it is not balanced by compassion and equality under the law?
In its latest 45-page report on the status of the death penalty across the world, the human rights non-government organization, Amnesty International, has quite a lot to say about this subject, which I do recommend a careful and most definitely, compassionate read : (5)
Death sentences and executions 2022 - Amnesty International
There is little which Amnesty fails to cover in their report that does not alarm, shock and persuade us of the futility of our collective and misguided endeavour to murder in the name of law and order, and also in glaring contravention of the 6th Commandment. This contradiction and apparent sociopathy seem to be ingrained and inbred within society to the level where we perceive and then apply solutions to crime and punishment in a one-dimensional fashion.
Many a time, we tend to forget the important lessons of history. For example, Hitler weaponized the state machinery in Germany to persecute folks or groups whom he personally disliked and quite possibly, envied. The end result was one of the most tragic periods of the 20th century, with millions executed for no purpose other than they were different from his ideal type – the Aryan race (6). This madness was infectious clearly, for Hitler had a lot of help in his terrible crimes.
To view the world in sanitary and clinical terms is arguably a factor which might have given rise to many societies adopting capital punishment. I am not at all sure justice could be pigeon-holed as if it were an object or weapon to be deployed at the whims and fancies of a despot. It is a slippery slope where we devalue a human life.
Here’s a sane position, couched in the uncompromising belief in the sanctity of life :
“Amnesty International opposes the death penalty in all cases without exception regardless of the nature or circumstances of the crime; guilt, innocence or other characteristics of the individual; or the method used by the state to carry out the execution. The organization campaigns for total abolition of the death penalty.” (5)
And here’s a very troubling position adopted by a few states :
“Four countries – China, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Singapore – executed people for drug-related offences in violation of international human rights law which prohibits the use of the death penalty for crimes that do not meet the threshold of “most serious crimes” (that is, crimes that involve intentional killing).” (5)
Unless we usefully address the socio-economic aspects of crime and more importantly, on how society is organized and governed, its citizens treated with dignity, and wealth more evenly distributed, the social problems of drug use and trafficking will continue to pervade. Crime prevention without meaningful education, jobs and supportive/conducive social environment, is a lost cause. Hitting out at folks in the lowest socio-economic scale (because we can) through the death penalty is at best futile and at worst, a sociopathy among some practitioners and owners of the law and state machinery. The fact that official executions in Saudi Arabia, Iran, China and Singapore have increased seems to bear this. As a tool for deterrence, capital punishment is a failure.
Further on in Amnesty’s report, a couple of silver linings. The first :
“Notwithstanding the drawbacks documented, remarkable progress against the death penalty was made in 2022. Without doubt, the world continued to move away from the death penalty and only a minority of countries – that are increasingly becoming isolated – actively used the punishment. Six countries abolished the death penalty either fully or partially in 2022.” (5)
Among the six countries, four, Kazakhstan, Papua New Guinea, Central African Republic and Sierra Leone reportedly abolished capital punishment totally. (5) These are not exactly the most economically-developed nations. Their political leadership perhaps draws breath and life from the People?
The second silver lining :
“In December, at the plenary session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), an unprecedented number of UN member states supported the adoption of the biennial resolution calling for the establishment of a moratorium on executions with a view to fully abolishing the death penalty. Close to two-thirds of the UN membership – 125 UN member states – voted to adopt the ninth resolution on a moratorium on the use of the death penalty.” (5)
As a Singapore citizen, I do wonder at times, what is the nature of our society? What values do we collectively uphold? How did we get to where human life and dignity are institutionally debased?
Amnesty’s report is glaringly tragic, especially to the vast numbers of senseless official executions across the globe. The report however also offers us hope that the tide is turning in favour of abolition. Purposeful and values-laden society and political leadership should help point the way.
We applaud the good efforts of the staff and supporters of Amnesty in making the report possible and available to the global community.

'The version of Ramadan presented to me by social media is a commodified one. Discreet "Ramadan-friendly" advertisements— clothing brands' Eid collections, religious self-help books, prayer accessories— dominate my Instagram and TikTok feeds. For a month dedicated to decreasing one's consumption, I find this ironic. Still, I succumb to the marketised piety being offered.'
Social media gives rise to a new, more rapid form of 'religious commodification' (Kitiarsa 2010). In doing so, it creates a 'pious consumer', where religious and consumer identities intersect. In such instances, consumption is rationalised under the guise of religious practice, or the expression of a pious identity. The role of the Muslim influencer is also complicated under this discourse, becoming not only a 'micro-celebrity' engaged in hustling (Carter 2016), but 'a new religious leader in the Muslim digital culture' (Zaid et al 2022, 11). In this way, social media commercial affordances can be subverted into sites of halal expression.
