The Heart of Rome (Marcus Acacius x Princess Reader)
All Chapters List
I. Heal the Heart
Odi et amo. Quare id faciam, nescio. Sed fieri sentior et excrucior. I love you and I hate you. Why I do this, I have no idea. But I feel it happening and I’m in agony. [Catullus]
Following the conquest of Egypt and its incorporation into the Roman Empire, there was a growing interest in its ancient culture. Over time, many in Egypt began to express a desire for greater autonomy and control over their own affairs. Dissatisfaction with Roman control over Egypt became part of the Egyptian psyche.
This is precisely why, immediately after the death of Emperor Septimius Severus, preparations for revolt began in Egypt. His emperor sons Caracella and Geta were already doing little else but quarreling with each other, drinking and having fun, watch gladiators fighting and feeling proud of themselves. Even when they were informed that their subjects in Egypt had revolted, they continued to do what they were doing. They didn't care about anything but themselves and their daily activities.
The Egyptians were aware of this, of course, they knew they could not be a strong soldier like their emperor father. They were quite sure that the day would come when they, with the help of the Greeks, would put the Roman governors in Egypt to the sword. After all, they had been making preparations since the death of Severus. There were Jews among them too, all of them insistent on establishing the sovereignty of ancient Egypt, but there was one thing they did not consider or pay much attention to.
General Marcus Acacius.
They say, you can feel the ground shake when he walks on it. He makes his opponents feel certain of their own death at the very moment he draws his sword. A daring commander with few who could stand up to him. It is unclear whether this is an exaggeration or not, but it is still rumored that he cut a lion in half in the Colosseum.
A beast in every sense of the word.
More than that, he is a leader who manages his legions very well and spur them on to achieve success during the war, a man who has not yet tasted a failure, well-earned the title of general in every way.
Since it was obvious that no one else could succeed in suppressing the rebellion, he was immediately sent to the region with the intervention of his Empresss Julia Domna, the mother of the two emperors.
Just like she guessed, he had succeeded in putting down the rebellion, of course, no doubt, as soon as his name rang through, the rebels, along with all the inhabitants of Egypt, have knew that they already defeated.
Some were forced to surrender, those who resisted and fled were found and killed by the Roman soldiers, but not all. The general didn't kill the surrendered ones, he took them as captives which was pretty fair for a beast. In contrast to him, the ones who fled were not, they were so desperate that they didn't know what to do and they started attacking everything and everywhere like rabid dogs.
They even attempted to violate the laws of war and mapped out a plan to kill the General and his soldiers, and even all the medics, in the night at their camps. It was a suicide mission, but they were on the verge of success.
'Has anyone seen the General? He's not in his tent!' A burly soldier strode in, holding his sword which was covered in the blood of the rebel he had just killed. He looked through all the tents one by one, moving quickly and with a concerned look on his face.
The clinking of swords echoed in the darkness as the soldiers cut down the last remaining rebels to death with their swords.
Soon, the soldier ran to his General, relieved to see him, but he was wounded in the abdomen moments ago. As he gently pressed his hand to his injury, a small amount of blood emerged, shining like rubies under the moonlight as it dripped from between his strong fingers onto the grass. His attackers were no longer alive, they were all lying on the ground, were literally cut to ribbons. They attacked him in his sleep when he was wearing nothing but his tunic, catching him off guard. He nodded to the soldier, demanding assistance as his white tunic transformed into a crimson hue. He had been wounded many times before, countless times, but this was nothing like before and was undoubtedly the worst injury he had ever sustained. ‘I think, I… got…,’ he groaned, it hurt much even when he speaks, feeling like beneath the wound his blood was boiling. ‘…poisoned.’ These were the last words spilled from his lips before his enormous body slumping to his knees, collapse altogether to the ground.
The woman with waist-length with black hair was dragging you along with her as she walking across the meadow, you were struggled, couldn’t control your feet, as if the ground was sliding under. She had her hands outstretched at her sides, even though her back was turned, it was not difficult to see her smile by the sunlight reflecting the curve of her chin. She abruptly ceased her movement and bent down to gather a few herbs in a meadow. She plucked them, gathered them in her palms, and kissed them. You heard the whispers between her lips and the harmony of the wind rippling through your ears. It was clear that she was blessing these herbs. When she turned to you, you staggered backwards, hypnotized by her face, so beautiful, mesmerizing, her eyes hypnotizing yours, it was impossible to look away, no escape from them.
Perhaps even more surprising than anything else was that her face and eyes were identical to yours. It really was truly astonishing. She handed you the plants like they were rare jewelry. You could see her arms shone in the sun, and her skin looked like fine marble. It was impossible to believe that it could be human skin; it must have been that of a goddess, but why did her face resemble yours?
'Heal the heart, child,' her voice sang through the meadow like a gentle breeze. You couldn't move your lips, but she heard you anyway.
‘Heart?’
A warm wind blew, and the silhouette of the woman came closer, startling you. Her hazel eyes were turning green under the sun. As she slightly opens her lips, you locked your eyes on them and waited eagerly for the answer.
‘The heart of Rome,’ almost whispers, ‘Serve it,’ a little loud now like commanding, ‘Heal it...’ again whispers then gently puts the herbs on your hand.
A strong wind blew, and the silhouette of the woman danced with the wind. The sunny sky burst into a starry night as the wind embraced the silhouette and rose to the sky, to the stars. You felt the ground under your feet, but your eyes were drawn to the enchanting sky.
As the wind finally gave way to the silent night, you looked at the herbs you were holding in your hand. These kind of herbs you were used to seeing almost every day, but what you were not used to seeing was that they were sparkling like diamonds between your fingers. It was as if you could feel their healing power on your skin.
Abruptly, you heard the voice again, echoing across the meadow. Your ears were once more caressed, blessed, but this time, the words were different.
‘Cure him…’
You barely heard your name being called and your body was shaking, slowly opened your eyes, you saw a familiar but worried face.
‘Wake up, please, you need to get up now,’ the concern in the man's voice brought you back to reality, the effect of the dream disappearing like a cloud of dust between the stone walls and dissipating into the air.
‘Uncle?’
You had rarely seen this face of your uncle who had taken you in when you were an orphan, who cared for you, protected you and raised you well more than any other father or mother ever would.
You sat up from the firm mattress you were lying on, ‘I thought we were travelling tomorrow night?’
‘No, no, that's not why I woke you up,’ he put your big dark cloak over your head. ‘You need to hide.’
You were startled to hear shouting and footsteps coming from outside the wooden door of the room. This was not the sort of noise you would normally expect to hear in this Valetudinarium (hospital, clinic) at this late hour.
‘What is going on?’ You rub your eyes with your fingers, trying to figure out the situation.
Your uncle tucked your hair deeper into your cloak.
'The Roman soldiers are gathering all the medici (psychians). I have to go with them.'
'Roman soldiers? I thought they left after they put down the rebellion, and slaughtered thousands. Besides, they already have medici with them why they-?'
He grabbed you by the shoulders, his anxiety evident.
'Some rebels with indigestion murdered all the medici in their tents, and then-'
A soldier's voice was heard from one of the nearby rooms. You both turned your heads in that direction, startled, and then looked at each other again.
'General, they targeted him. They attacked him in his sleep. He got them, but he got poisoned. They want me to save him.'
‘Poisoned? But Uncle, he might already be dead, if you won’t be able to cure him they'll blame you or punish you and-’
‘Don’t think about it now, go and hide, as a woman you are not allowed to be here remember? You have to hide and wait for my return.’
The soldiers' voices were heard very close by.
‘No, I'll come with you, if it's aspis (venomous snake in Nile region) venom we'll use the same techniques as before, like we did with the boy last time, it would take too long to make an antivenom on your own, let me help you.’
‘It's too dangerous for you my dearest, to go among the soldiers, even if you wear these men clothes, we can't hide the beauty of your face, dear.’
You strode over to the cauldron in the fireplace and ran your hands over the soot that had accumulated underneath it.
‘It worked before,’ you said, rubbing a little soot on your cheeks.
‘Only at the market. This time it's more dangerous. I'd never forgive myself if I couldn't protect you there.’
‘Don't worry. I'll be back here as soon as we've finished with the antivenom. I know all the paths and shortcuts very well now.’
Suddenly a soldier burst in, kicking the door angrily, you shuddered.
‘You two! Get out, now! We don't have time!
‘We're making sure to collect all medical supplies, sir,’ he turned to you. ‘Come on, boy, don't dawdle!’
You nodded without looking at soldier, grabbed all medicine bottles.
‘You'd better hurry!’
As soon as the soldier left the room, your uncle moved swiftly to the corner and opened the small wooden chest. He took out a cream-coloured envelope of slightly worn paper, sealed with a wax seal bearing the emblem of Septimius Severus.
'This is…'
'I was going to give this to you tomorrow as I promised last time, but there's no time now. If anything happens to me, you will open it. Everything about your true family is in here.'
You took the envelope from him with shaking hands. The previous emperor himself had sealed it. You wondered what it meant.
Your uncle grabbed your shoulders and shook you, making sure you understood how important this letter was.
‘No one should ever see this. Do you understand me? No one! After you open it, hide it. Do not let anyone see it. But don't lose it, hide it like your life depends on it, you'll understand why.’
You nodded firmly and swallowed hard. You tucked the letter into the bag hanging around your neck and hid it at the very bottom under the medicine bottles, making them rattle in the process.
‘Aya, you’re going to have to choose,’ he looked at you before leaving the room.
‘Choose what uncle?’
‘To run or stay. It’ll make sense when you read the letter,’ he checked the hall and grabbed your wrist. You were so confused but you had to think about this later.
'We have to get out now, soldiers are outside, quick!'
The soldiers had gathered all the medici they could find in the army headquarters, near the tents. There were seven of them yet were unable to find a solution to the General's injury. When it was only you and your uncle who were next, a burly soldier, who was of a higher rank than the others, approached you two. You kept your head down, avoiding eye contact. Everyone was in a rush, with almost all of them mobilized to save the general's life. Your gender didn't matter to them, for now. As you were about to follow your uncle into the tent, the soldier stopped you by raising his hand.
‘Only the medicus.’
‘My aide, sir, let him in. He's as expert as I am.’
As your uncle is their last hope, he let you in, but did not follow you inside, stands guard outside the tent. The General's squire was standing right next to him, he looked at you with tears in his eyes. It was a heartbreaking sight. The sorrow had taken possession of everything inside the tent, and you could feel it right down to your bones.
The General was lying on a mattress in the west corner of the tent. He was unconscious, but you noticed that his lips were moving, like murmuring. You moved forward to look closer to see his face, which you had been so curious about.
His face was exactly as you had imagined, and yet not. He had many scars, as if he had been born with them, his light brown skin embracing them. His moustache and beard were partially grey, his nose and chin perfectly shaped, as if the Prometheus had spent more time shaping this man. His face was stunning, and it made your heart beat fast. You had never felt this way about any other man, well you never had an opportunity to do though.
You were somewhat disappointed to see his eyes closed. You were curious about what they might look like, and you were eager to see what he would look like when he opened them. When you found yourself wanting to touch his face, you were a little surprised. For a moment, you forgot why you were there. Your uncle had already picked up the sword with which General had been wounded and was examining the blood on it. You went over to help him, keeping one eye on the general, lying there with his imposing body and half of the white tunic he wore dyed red.
Your heart constricted with pain, and the dream you had came vividly to mind.
‘Cure him.’
‘We need to check his wound!’ You were startled by your uncle's loud voice, squinting at you, you felt ashamed.
As your uncle beckoned, you approached him, seeing the wound was not deep but the skin around the cut starting to get pale from the venom and the edges curling inwards.
‘He doesn't have much time, let's start making the antivenom now,’ he swallowed, the wound was really getting worse, you had to cure him no matter what.
Maybe, you thought, this is why the Gods showed you this in your dream, they warned you in advance that your life depends on it.
The process of making the antivenom took slightly longer than anticipated, but you persevered admirably. Your uncle cleaned the wound to neutralize it while you were perspiring from the fabric of your clothes. Once the antivenom was finally administered, your uncle applied the antidote carefully to the wound but he was exhausted, fingers are shaking so you helped him even you were feeling so tired too. Your eyelids were almost closed but you managed to complete your duty perfectly.
The soldier from earlier came into the tent to check the process, you bowed your head, and stepped back.
'We've cleaned the wound, once its neutralized, applied the antidote. We just need to wait now,' your uncle informed him, wiping sweat off his forehead. 'We need to give him some time, and make sure he drinks water soon to avoid dehydration.’
As the solider checking the wound you turned your head to look at the squire boy who was sobbing just ago, already fallen asleep. Poor boy, you thought.
The soldier ordered you to leave the tent and wait outside.
You felt your arms and legs go numb with fatigue and collapsed to the ground, sat cross-legged, trying hard to stay awake. Your uncle was same but he still struggled to sleep. In the end, he couldn't control his eyelids.
You woke up to the sound of the soldiers shouting and arguing. You turned your head, couldn't make out what they were disagreeing about, but they were making a lot of noise.
'You better go in and make sure the General drinks some water. He needs to stay hydrated,' your uncle said in firmly, watching the soldiers probably keep an eye on them.
The tent was empty except for the General. The soldier from earlier was outside, reassuring the other soldiers. You approached to check him. His forehead was covered in sweat, his body was fighting with venom. You quickly grabbed a damp cloth and pressed it gently on his forehead. Then you touched his lips with your thin, fragile fingers. You felt something intense growing inside you. As a secret medicus, you have touched the face and other parts of the body of many men and women to cure them. However, touching this man's face and lips was never like touching others.
You took a deep breath to pull yourself together. This was nonsense.
You made his lips crack open and dipped a rag into the fresh water in the copper pot. You pressed it against the general's rather dry, pale lips, squeezing it through his mouth.
After repeatedly doing this, you decided you had enough. Just before you withdrew your hand, the general's strong hand grabbed yours with a firm grip. You were surprised and moaned in pain, opened your hand with pressure, and the rag fell to the ground.
You swallowed hard, your heart racing as you looked at his face. He opened those eyes you had been so curious about and looked at you with a cold, calculating gaze, squeezing your wrist so tightly you felt it would break in a minute. You stifled a scream and moaned in pain, 'Sir, I'm here for help.' You sounded almost as if you were crying, and suddenly he moaned in pain as well, throwing his head back and closing his eyes, the effort drained him. His chest rose and fell rapidly as his breathing quickened.
When he finally released your wrist, you threw yourself backwards for dear life, rubbed your wrist with your other hand and stroked it, praying to the Gods to take the pain away. You could have sworn to Jupiter that if he had squeezed your wrist any harder, you would have heard a cracking sound coming from your bones.
How could he possibly be so strong even when exhausted, so close to death?
As the pain receded, you took a deep breath and forced yourself to calm down. Your thin wrist was painted the red like poppies, as if the shadows of his fingers were engraved on your skin.
You glanced timidly over your shoulder, he was still lying with his eyes closed, but you had just made a terrible mistake, he heard your voice, must have noticed you were a woman, and only the Gods knew what he would do when he came to his senses.
You had to leave immediately, wrapping your wrist in a clean piece of cloth and tucking the sleeve of your dress into it so that the bandage wouldn't be visible. When you came out of the tent, your uncle grabbed your arm and pulled you behind the tent.
‘Uncle, the General seemed to opened his eyes for a moment and heard my voice, he might remember when he awakens,' you said in a whisper, hoping no one have heard you.
‘Gods have mercy upon us,’ he glanced down, murmuring, then grabbed you by shoulders. “Time to go, you need to leave now. Go by following the path through the woods. Soldiers having a disagreement about something, I think they found out-‘
‘You, medicus, come here,’ one of the soldiers shouted at your uncle.
Your uncle gestured to you with his eyes, saying ‘go now’,
'You too!' you gasped as you realised the soldier waving his hand at you.
'Sir, he should stay with the General...' your uncle stepped in front of you to protect you.
'I said come, both of you, now,' he wasn’t asking, it was a firm order.
As you took tentative steps towards the place where the other soldiers were forming a circle beside your uncle, your heart began to beat as if it were going to burst. These were the soldiers who had just fought, and you wondered if they hurt each other, but you could not see anyone hurt or wounded.
On the contrary, they looked at you curiously, only at you.
‘That's nonsense, Dimitrus, this boy can't be a girl,' said one soldier pointing you with a small knife in his hand.
Your uncle was standing next to you, his fear having come true, his face taut with worry.
As the soldier, who you guessed was named Dimitrus, approached you, your uncle took a step in front of him, but the soldier easily overpowered him and pushed him aside. The soldier looked at your body from top to bottom. You bowed your head and clenched your fists. Your heart pounded in your chest as your breathing quickened. He yanked down your hood of your cloak with his big hands, other soldiers came nearby for a better look.
Your hair was tied up at the back of your head, and the soldier's grin widened when he noticed. He drew his dagger from its holster, and when you saw your uncle's worried face behind the soldier's formidable arm, you began to pray to all the Gods.
He grabbed your bun with his hand and cut the hairband with his dagger, your golden-brown wavy hair falling over your shoulders. The soldiers laughed and whistled. Dimitrus looked at them with a cocky smile and turned back to you.
‘Such a long hair for a aide boy, eh?’
'A girl, indeed,' said one soldier, looking at you with disbelief.
‘I told you I could smell a woman a mile away,’ he laughed, his voice booming.
'Please,' you demanded, feeling unable to do anything else. A feeling of despair took control of your whole body.
‘What is going on here?’ The burly soldier approached and noticed your new look, looking at you in astonishment. Dimitrus grabbed you by the hair and pulled you towards him. He then grabbed your chin and turned your face to Octavius.
'Look at her. You don't even know that the medicus brought a girl with him, Octavius?' And you're the general's right-hand man!’
You struggled to move your body, but he was so strong.
‘Hey, I can't see her face clearly!'
You closed your eyes tightly as someone threw wine on your face. Dimitrus wiped your face with his big fingers, rubbing roughly.
'Gods, no ordinary beauty,' looking at you like a hungry wolf, then smells your hair making you feel nauseous.
You tried to look away, but your eyes met your uncle's desperate gaze.
‘That's enough, Dimitrus, let her go, is this what you all thinking while our General lies there like that?’
You rushed to your uncle's side as his hands released your hair.
‘He's already dead, I've never seen anyone get up after being poisoned,’ he says as if he was looking forward to his death.
Octavius drew his sword with a schwing. ‘How dare you! Say that again and I'll cut your tongue off!’ he growled.
Dimitrus' followers drew their swords as well. Octavius looked at each of them with anger and disbelief. He has been betrayed.
‘You filthy rats! I'll kill you one by one!’ He waved his long sword at them.
Dimitrus grabbed your uncle by the collar, 'Start with this one. Who knows what he gave the General instead of medicine?'
‘Yes, he must be punished!’
'Punish him, Octavius!'
They were all yelling at him by raising their swords, you were thinking a way out but there wasn’t any.
‘If you won't, I will,' Dimitrus pointed his swords end at your uncle.
‘No!' you cried but your uncle stopping you with his hand.
Then, as Octavius raised his hand and was about to lunge at him, Dimitrus plunged his sword through your uncle's stomach, the poor man groaning in pain and falling to his knees, and as you ran towards him, he drew back his sword, his blood splashing in your face with the force of the draw. Your body began to shake and you felt paralysed as you watched his lifeless body fall to the ground.
'Dimitrus!' Octavius roared, ‘You've gone too far! What do you think our general will do to you when he awakens?’
You collapsed to your knees in shock, your body rigid and still, your face expressionless yet tears streaming down your cheeks.
'General? You failed to save him, you let that medicus get into his tent, you must share his fate! I will tell the emperors that this is your fault! And I think we should put the general out of his misery-'
Suddenly, an axe emerged from nowhere and plunged into Dimitrus' chest deeply. His body reeled back, shaking, then fell to the ground lying backwards, dying in a pool of blood as everyone looked at him in astonishment and panic. Blood gushed from where his chest had been split open, and when he stopped breathing, laying there as his eyes remained wide open.
They turned their head to see who had thrown the axe and they were shocked once again.
The general could barely stands near his tent, his eyes filled with rage, his gaze blazing with fury. Octavius ran to his side quickly.
'General! Thank Gods you're finally awake!’
'What's going on here, Octavius?' his voice was like a roar.
‘Sir, Dimitrus and others have attempted to mutiny.’
Acacius gave the other soldiers a deathly stare and they immediately kneeled down with their swords upside down.
'No, sir, we did not.’
'Forgive me, sir, it was Dimitrus doing.’
'Sir, please forgive me.’
You closed your uncle's eyelids with your fingers as they all begged for forgiveness. Your back was turned to the General, you didn't care if you live or die, you didn’t care about anything. You felt your whole life was already over.
'If any of you ever dare to do anything like this again,' he walked near Dimitrus’ body and pulled the axe from his chest roughly, you startled by the crunching sound coming from his bones.
'I Marcus Acacius, will make sure that he meets the same fate as this scum!'
He put them all in their place, they all nodded in fear and stood up with his gesture, bowing their heads though couldn't look him in the face.
'Now get ready, we must sail at dawn!'
‘Yes sir!’
All of them sheathing their swords, spreading around in rush.
Acacius staggered a little as they gone at his sight, his wound still hurting but he tried hard not to show them.
Octavius touched his arm, 'Sir, the Gods have spared your life but please rest a little longer.’
'Who is this man?’
You were certain he was talking about your uncle, even though your back was turned to him.
'The medicus who cured you, sir, Dimitrus got mad and killed him because he thought he couldn't save you.'
'As if we haven't lost enough medici tonight. He was wrong obviously. This man managed to cure me. I'm standing thanks to him,' he turned his head to Octavius. 'Make sure this man's body reaches his family. Let the governor know about this. They should fulfil all ritual arrangements.'
Octavius nodded, "Yes sir, I will."
Then both turned their gaze to you. 'What about this one?'
Your body was petrified, you felt the time of execution has come, you’ve never expected the last moments of your life to be like this.
‘I think this was his aide or slave sir, Dimitrus found out she was a woman, that medicus was hiding her, sir,’ he bowed his head in shame, you swallowed.
Acacius' pain returned, he groaned in pain, Octavius grabs his waist gently, "Sir, please rest, you need to get your strength back.’
'Sir!' Acacius' squire came and put his arm under his.
It was time for him to turn his back to you.
‘Since her master has died, take this girl to the other slaves, I don't want any more chaos or mishap,’ he said in a firm voice.
You wiped tears from your eyes with the back of your hand as their footsteps faded away. Two soldiers came and grabbed your arms, lifted you off the ground while the others carrying your uncle’s body. When you turned your head, glancing over your shoulder, saw the General's curly grey hairs and his well-shaped nose before he went into his tent.
Your body was filled with rage.
What you heard was only a heightening of your pain and a deepening of your hurt.
A slave? How could he say that? The one who cured him was now worthy of being a slave?
As the mid-morning sun began to reflect on the walls of Rome through the haze that filled the
harbour, the capital was preparing to experience one of the most active days in its history. Everyone who noticed the navy ships approaching the harbour from afar, citizens, subjects, foreign mission chiefs, tradesmen, civil servants, porters, all filled the entrance of the city. They were waiting to welcome General Marcus Acacius and the glorious Roman soldiers. On the deck of the large ship at the forefront of the fleet, the General sighs deeply as he looks out over his city, thanking Mars for his triumphant and healthy return.
It ten days to get from the port of Alexandria to Rome, a very difficult experience for you, travelling with captives called slaves. Most of them were Greeks and Egyptians, and the fact that the streets of the Roman capital were filled with shouts of joy was of no interest to them. On board the ship they were constantly told that the slave market in the capital was a very prestigious place, that the young girls would be well brought up by certain families, that they should stop crying, that they should pray to Jupiter to make the wealthy families could like them and buy them with high prices.
But you were not like those slaves, you were not a prisoner of war, nor was your family enslaved or poor. Your uncle was a renowned and esteemed medicus. He was a member of an affluent family. He and his wife found you on the banks of the River Nile when you were three years old. That is what they told you. The gods had not blessed them with a child, so they loved you as much as their own. You knew he wasn't your real father or uncle, but you were very happy with your life and didn't ask too many questions until he told you about that letter the night before the night that ruined your life.
As an orphan, you were brought up well by your uncle, learning all about Egyptian medicine, performing countless surgeries at his side, bringing many people back to life -including the general himself- and learning enough to become an expert. But, no one could call you as medicus because you were a woman, yet your talents were too great to be ignored. No matter who you told on this ship, no one would believe you, and even if they did, there was nothing they could do about it.
As you looked out through the small cracks between the planks of the ship, your eyes travelled over the seemingly endless sea. You couldn't stop thinking about the dream you had that night.
‘Cure him.’
Wouldn't it have been better if you haven't cure him? Perhaps your uncle would still be alive. Maybe you wouldn't be sitting on this ship now, resigned to your fate, wondering, worrying what will happen to you. Is this your reward for healing the great Roman general?
That man ruined your life, and you only did yourself a disservice by saving him.
Perhaps the gods were testing you, but what was the lesson?
You looked at the shadow of the General's fingers under the piece of cloth you had wrapped around your wrist. The color was that of violets caressed by moonlight days ago. Now, it is unmistakably that color, doesn’t hurt much anymore.
As the ship rumbled into port, you realized that it was time to accept your fate. In the dark and damp bilge of the ship, you and a girl close to your age called Decima took turns using the same swing as a bed, you liked each other very much and in desperation you became confidants. She was in her early twenties, beautiful yet you were in your late twenties, ahead of her in beauty. Her father was a rebel, probably killed by the General's men, and she was taken as captive. You told her almost everything except the letter that you’re hiding in your bag.
As soon as you stepped into the harbour, the discrimination began, the general and his men moved in the other direction, while the trader man of slaves were standing in front of you ordered you to move somewhere else.
You frowned as you saw his face in the distance over the shoulders of the people in the crowd, he looked very healthy, his body had managed to overcome the venom of the past few days and his wound has healed. You remembered how you had spent hours with your uncle trying to cure him, how you had struggled for hours to make the antidote while your arms and wrists ached with pain.
The General's face lit up with a warm smile as he waved his hand at his citizens, you were surprised to find that all your anger has vanished for a moment.
You turned your head away, looking at him would only cause you pain. He didn't look at you because he hasn't seen your face yet -well not clearly-, furthermore, you’ve never met face to face, to him you’re just a slave nothing more. Octavius however, recognised you from a distance. He was the only one who has witnessed your hard work. He was an honorable men, didn’t like to see you among the slaves, yet he has nothing to do, it was his General's order.
In the evening of that day, after the slaves were taken to the baths and then to the slave market for sale, you and Decima were taken by the slaver man to a separate cell. From outside, one could hear the sounds of a lively market, where slaves were being sold one by one. There was a great deal of interest in these new slaves from Egypt.
Slaver man appeared at the door of your cell in the market with a man over your age looks wealthy. Decima immediately stood up, but you did not. The slaver gestured with his hand, turning Decima around in the center and showing her arms, face and feet, squinting at you meanwhile.
‘Look at these strong and beautiful young girls, sir, I wouldn’t show you any poor slaves, they are both virgins, and they are very beautiful, the great Venus has bestowed her beauty on these girls. They would fetch a lot of money if they went to the market, but I thought I would show them to you first sire.’ He was blandishing much, but the man's eyes were locked on you.
‘Doesn't she have any manners? Why doesn't she stand up?’
‘You're right sir, she must be a bit sick from travelling, she will,’ he gestured to you with his hand, ‘Come on, get up, girl.’
You rolled your eyes and got up, he squeezed your arm hard to warn you first, then did everything what he had done to Decima, opening almost every part of your body for the other man to see. It was incredibly disgusting, you felt like an animal being sold at the cattle market.
‘The other one is younger, but this one is so beautiful, a rare one,’ he said, grabbed you by arm, looking at you hungrily. ‘How much do you want for this one?’
Your eyes meet with Decima in a silent exchange, as it was time to go your separate ways.
‘Eight thousand sesterces, sire.’
He pursed his lips, thinking, his fingers touching your hair mean while you were closing your eyes, praying for a miracle.
‘Ten thousand sesterces!’
A familiar voice of a man echoed through stone walls. You all turned your heads to that direction.
‘General Marcus Acacius offers ten thousand sesterces for this girl!’ Octavius’ imposing body appeared, he came towards them with his armor making a sharp noise with every step. He threw a big coin pouch to the slaver, who caught it with a big smile on his face.
‘Sold, of course,’ he was counting the coins with happy face.
Then Octavius firmly grabbed the other man's arm that was still touching you, lifted it, and pushed it away. He frowned.
‘This girl belongs to General Acacius now, sir, you must not touch her,’ he warned him gently but firmly.
As the general entered the city in his chariot, the people shouted his name. He waved his hand to them, and the streets were filled with a great enthusiasm as everyone gathered to honour the general and his soldiers. The chariot carrying him soon passed under the triumphal arch of Septimius Severus and turned towards the Curia Julia, the Senate building, where the emperors must have been waiting for him. The general's smile faded. He was tired and not looking forward to seeing them, but he would not go to his villa before visiting the emperors.
As General strode purposefully up the marble stairs, Geta and Caracella leapt down from their golden imperial thrones in excitement. As soon as Geta saw him, he opened his arms wide.
‘How can I reward Rome's greatest general?'
'By letting him catch his breath first,' Caracella smiled widely.
Acacius stopped in front of them and nodded, 'Emperors.'
'We have been eagerly awaiting for your arrival, general,' Geta clasped his hands together, looking at him with admiration.
'Speak for yourself, brother. My legs ache from sitting for so long,' Caracella said, then laughed loudly. 'But it was worth it, indeed!'
‘Indeed!’ They both laughed once more, but Caracella looking at his brother a bit strange way.
It was hard to tell if Caracella wanted to embrace Geta or if wanted to take his life right then and there. The relationship between the two of them was quite distorted.
The general rolled his eyes, he was used to these two whiny emperors half of his age bickering at each other all the time, he sighed in frustration at having to put up with them when he could easily take both their lives with a single stroke of his sword. Unfortunately, this unpleasant situation had only just begun.
‘We heard that you were poisoned, how did it feel?’ Geta looked at him with wide eyes and smile.
The news must have reached the emperors before the general had even boarded the ship.
'Painful, your highness,' Acacius stated, a shadow passing over his brown eyes as he remembered the pain again.
'I'm sure it was, it must have been an interesting experience.’ Caracella crossed his arms; smiling just like his brother.
‘Cobra or viper?’
‘Aspis, highness, the viper type.’
‘Oh, I won!’ Geta jumped for joy and gestured to Caracella with his hand, imitating a snake.
Caracella ignored him looking at the General.
‘The rebels must have quite a sense of humour, poisoning a Roman General carrying Medusa on his chest with a snake, quite ironic,’ he touched Medusa on General's armor with his index finger.
Acacius frowned while looking at him, ‘They certainly do, they murdered all our medici mercilessly, fortunately the great Asclepius sent his help, my men brought another medicus from city was able to cure me, it is thanks to him that I can stand here in front of you, highness,’ Acacius remembered the memory when he was unsure whether it was a dream or not but he could not get out of his mind the fingers that touched his lips, the owner of those hazel eyes that came to his aid when his throat was dry from thirst. But it couldn't be medicus he thought, it had to be someone with thin fingers, someone with beautiful eyes he had never seen before. Maybe, since he was too close to death, it was a dream or a goddess has appeared to him, he couldn't be sure.
The first thing he remembers is opening his eyes and grabbing her wrist with his survival instinct. He thought it was a strange looking young man in a hood, maybe another rebel had come to kill him again, but then he heard her voice and thought his goddess had come to heal him. He was in so much pain and seeing hallucinations that he couldn't tell if it was a dream or not. But couldn’t get rid of those thoughts since days.
The emperors didn't seem to care much about the medicis the general was talking about, or how he had recovered, and Acacius seemed bored as they continued to joke with each other.
‘Mother,' Geta ran to her as he noticed the Empress approaching, extends his arm for her.
Julia Domna took his arm as she coming towards Acacius, whispering something into Geta’s ear, without taking her eyes off the General.
‘My lady,’ Acacius nodded to her.
Domna's smile was like Caracella's, you could never guess what she was thinking.
‘General, how good it is to see you return triumphant once more. Rome salutes you, and I embrace you,’ she approached him with open arms and put her hands Acacius’ board shoulders.
Caracella sat back on his throne, a bored look on his face.
‘My Lady, the honour is mine,’ the general said, bowing his head.
‘We shall sacrifice 1000 bulls to honor our triumphant mother!’ Geta clapped his hands excitedly, ‘Let's have a great feast tonight!’
‘Highness, let's give the General some time to rest, he must be tired from the battle,’ Domna removed her hands from the General's shoulders but kept her eyes on him.
Caracella let out a high, shrill laugh that echoed through the white marble columns. Geta sat on his throne and scowled.
‘Marcus, walk with me,’ the Empress turned round, gestured to him.
Acacius sighed, he didn't want to be alone with her, but he had to. Domna walked ahead of him, hands clasped behind her back, he followed her slowly.
‘My sons are glad to see you again, even if they have no idea how fortunate they are to have you serving them.’
'It is my duty to serve Rome.’
She paused and smiled, watching the water in the pool shimmer in the sunlight, the glow reflecting off her bright skin, her expression was difficult to read.
'I think you have a talent for survival.’
She sounded dissatisfied. 'After all, you trained under Maximus, you must have learned a lot from him.’
He looked away, 'I owe where I am today to the remarkable fighting skills he taught me, he was an honourable man, the greatest general Rome has ever seen,' Acacius' eyes were fixed on the great Temple of Venus between the eastern edge of the Forum Romanum and the Colosseum.
Domna looked at him with a feeling between admiration and concern.
‘He, like you, lived to serve Rome, even if he had to kill Commodus,’ she said, and even little children could catch the obvious implication in her voice.
Acacius held his ground, his eyes roaming the curves of the statue of Venus.
‘But unlike him, you are loyal to the emperors, I can be sure of that, can't I?
He turned his head towards her, but did not look at her. His eyes were now on the two spoilt emperors who were talking animatedly to each other between the columns. 'As long as Rome is prosperous for all her subjects, I will be loyal to them, my lady.'
Domna laughed loudly, 'Ah, that's why I want you in the Senate, how long will you refuse?
'I am only a soldier, politics is not my business, nor should it be. Consuls in the Senate -'
‘Those old foxes live in abundance and do nothing, the person who has done Rome the greatest service should be in the Senate.’ Domna glanced over her shoulder at her sons. 'I am concerned that Macrinus has no equal in the Senate and that Caracella dominates him, perhaps if you are in there, you will gain his trust.’
'Your Highness...' He looked at her shaking his head as no.
Domna looked at Acacius, this time with a serious expression on her face, 'For the sake of Rome you must be especially careful with Caracella, as her mother even I find it hard to get my way with him, he is not like Geta, he is a hard-headed child.’
Acacius looked at Caracella whose back was turned, of course he knew this very well, for a moment he thought that he was the real threat to Rome, not the enemy soldiers or the others.
‘Anyway, you should go to your villa and rest, you will have time to think about this alone,’ she said with a forced smile, then turned around to go to her sons.
After praying in the temple of Venus, Acacius walked out, and as he descended the steps of the temple, he felt a stinging pain where his wound had been, the poison had completely gone from his body, but it had left its trace behind.
Octavius was lost in thought as he has leaned against the side of the carriage waiting for him, quickly stood up when he noticed him.
‘Sir.’
‘I see you don't miss your home, as you're still here,' Acacius said as he descended the last step. He got into the carriage and climbed in to sit beside him. Acacius was quite tired so he lay down on the seat, the fact that he felt so comfortable with Octavius was because of their long friendship, he was his most trusted man, more than just a friend, like a brother.
'Are you going to tell me what's troubling you?’ Acacius covered his face with his arm, but he could feel the tension in him.
'Sir, the girl.’
'Oh, I see, a girl? Have you fallen in love with a girl?
'No, that's not it,' Octavius felt embarrassed as he remembers your face. 'That poor girl, It doesn't seem fair that she should be with those slaves, sir, you are an honourable man, but-'
Acacius lifted his arm from his face and looked at him, the cart swaying as it moved along the stony roads.
'The girl that medicus hid? Why do you care so much for her? Is there something I should know?’
'After all, they worked so hard together to cure you, perhaps you should have at least let her go home.’
‘Together? What do you mean?' Acacius sat up, his eyebrows furrowed.
Octavius bowed his head.
'Sir, I made a mistake, it was my fault for letting them into your tent, I don't know how I could have been so careless even after the assassination, forgive me...'
Acacius raised his hand.
'Slow down, we will talk about your mistake later, you are saying that girl entered my tent and cured me? How?’
'I didn't look closely at her face and I didn't know she was a woman maybe because of her outfit but I made a terrible mistake, I should’ve known, forgive me sir.’ He bowed his head once more but it made Acacius more angry.
'You haven't answered my question, Octavius,' his voice was loud.
'Yes sir, she did her best to cure you, sir, the girl and Medicus worked hard to produce antivenom all night.’
Acacius was surprised when he realized that he hadn't dreamed that night. He was glad to learn that the owner of those eyes was a real person. But then he thought that she might be on the slave market by now, about to be sold to someone else.
‘Stop the carriage!’ He yelled.
The coachman immediately did as he was told and pulled hard on the horses' harnesses, the horses howling and stamping their hooves on the ground.
'Sir?' Octavius raised his eyebrows in surprise.
'Go and find the girl, I want to see her at my villa tonight, do you understand? Acacius tossed him a pouch full of coins.
Octavius smiled, ‘Yes, sir.’

Continuing the villains for my Egyptian Ben 10 au, Charmcaster!
I think here it all started with basically thinking about okay what magic do we have in like our mythology and stuff right and i thought of سحر أسود which is not specific to egypt i think its a general muslim country thing, but hey it checks out!
Every egyptian kid has heard horror stories about Jinn or 'afareet possessing people and whatnot, and plenty of people still believe in it especially older and more religious people, so i thought itd be fun to basically incorporate culture into this au
Another aspect to this is her motif. Im sure most of you have seen the concept art where charmcaster is more fox-like, which ive seen people say it was meant to contrast gwen. Gwen being a cat, feline, and cc being a fox, canine
I liked this idea a lot too but instead of fox, i wanted to go for a سلعوة. A sl'awa is basically some sort of dog creature from egyptian folklore, its sort of like the egyptian farmer's chupacabra. This was kind of hard to do because its been described as looking like a lot of different dogs like foxes or canines or whatever
I ended up going for hyena because thats how my mom knows it and also because if theres any canine thats gonna be a scary dog creature, itd definitely be a hyena those are kinda creepy. Definitely noone will get it without me telling them, but oh well i tried
Heres just some sketches while i tried to get familiar with her design and her bags design
O yeah because i entirely changed her gimmick i had to come up with something different for her bag than the weird voodoo thing they got, so i made it sort of look like a jinn. Or like one interpretation of jinn i guess
I didnt draw this out but while hex has a sort of smoke and lights look for his magic id want charmcaster to have a more firey look for hers, referencing how jinn are beigns made of smokeless fire
I think itd be fun to have spooky things happen with the jinn like charmcaster can only talk to him through the bag but maybe if theyre next to a campfire or something and the jinn gets angry the fire can sort of get bigger and maybe form a sillhouette or something cool like that, or if charmcaster possesses someone their body gets all contorted and stuff
Another fun thing you could do is maybe have a fightscene takeplace at a time where theres an azan coming, so when the imam calls for prayer the words somehow fuck with the jinn or something like that haha

Characters I want to rattle like an angry maraca for an undiscerned amount of time based on how chewy they are
Call him gum the way I'm chewing on him all day
Starscream
Look at him. He's a petty bitch. He's standing there all smug and confident while thousands of traumas happen around him. He's a girlboss, he's an unrepentant pathological liar, he's megatron's silly rabbit, he's my babygirl. He's one of those toys that is animal shape but if you squeeze it, it's eyes or stomach pops out. I want to do that to him constantly. He has an immortal spark so it's ok he'll live.
Newt Giezler
He's the type of scientist Ian Malcom would hate. He's the Icarus of his tale. He overshot the sun and landed in the black hole at the center of our galaxy. He's not doomed by the narrative, the narrative is doomed by him. He's like a dog you need to keep an eye on constantly or else he decides that he actually can eat chocolate and devours a whole cake. Telling him to slow down is a slap in the face. How dare you tell him to wait for everyone else when he can finally see the way to save humanity, all the while becoming their enemy's greatest weapon. He's so invested in interviewing God he forgot he was dining with the devil. Who gets the bill in the end?
Jason Todd
Look at him. Look. He's everything he's been told but so much more. He's the tragic son. The black sheep. His past is rags to riches, his present is the unsettling truth, I hope his future is good. This is the guy that got me into fandoms. He is a part of my soul. So hurt and beaten by the world yet still kind and caring.
Ramses II (Prince of Egypt)
I am not talking about the real Pharaoh, only the one created by Dreamworks. Now I am a slut for good sibling dynamics but the best one is sibling vs sibling. I want that drama, the emotion of caring for someone your whole life only for them to betray you. Moses was ok to fight Ramses I when he went to free the Jews but to face his brother, one of the closest people he's ever been to, it's devastating. The utter joy when Ramses expressed when Moses is alive, he practically abandoned court etiquette. He was willing to lie to his father to keep Moses safe. They were the closest of brothers and now they're pitted against each other.
A rubber band, sproingy but not sustainable
Jazz
What do you see when you see Jazz? A happy go lucky guy without a care in the world? Wrong. He's Special Operations which means he's cheats, lies, steals for a living. He operates on a kill or be killed basis and he will kick your ass if he feels like it
Sunstreaker and Sideswipe
They're precious boys. They stand out from the Autobots bc they're so decepticon like. They were in the same Pit as Megatron and instead of joining him, they chose the Autobots. And despite all the comments, they're so loyal to the Autobots.
Skyfire
Imagine crashing in a snowstorm then waking up 4 billion years later that your entire planet is dead. Skyfire woke up to a world devastated by civil war, to a decepticon that wore his partner's face. He thought he knew what he was getting into because Starscream wouldn't lie to him. But he did. Skyfire shot down his ex because he's a good bot at heart and it hurts him to see someone close to him like this. He's a main character of a Greek tragedy.
Predigested sludge
Bumblebee
Listen, I love Bee. He got me into tf. But my god is he everywhere. I get it, he's the kids character. But he can be fun and playful and still kick ass. Looking at his arc from tfp to its successor RiD15, those are two different Bumblebees. Id love to shake him but he's Hasbro's cash cow. You can't shake a cash cow without the jangle drawing out capitalists.

Maybe not quite your purview, but do you have any thoughts on lichen-based dyes like orchil? I got into the rabbithole when I was a wee textile hobbyist, but I was wondering if it’s a topic getting focus in more biology-focused circles
Ooo yes! An interesting topic! I am new to the lichen textile world, but I have OPINIONS. Most of which I got from reading Lichen Dyes: The New Source Book by Karen Diadick Casselman, which I highly recommend to anyone interested in lichen textile dyes.
tl;dr: I support salvage harvesting, where only lichens that are detached from the substrate, and/or are likely to be damaged/destroyed by human activity are collected and used for dying. This is difficult with the scarcity/longevity of lichens used for orchil and other purple dyes. But if you can find it, I think using them to dye textiles it is a great way to spread awareness of lichens and how incredible they are!
For those who don't know, orchil is one of many names for a purple dye derived from ammonia prepared lichens--mainly Roccella in the Mediterranean. Other purple producing lichens mainly used in northern Europe include Ochrolechia (aka cudbear, kork, or korkje) and Lasallia/Umbilicaria (aka orsallia). Purple dye itself dates back to neolithic times, and can also be made using the crushed bodies of marine gastropods (murex), and the crushed shells of arthropods (kermes). Purple dying likely originated in eastern or central Asia, and spread to Europe following the crusades. People have been using orchil for a long time, with the oldest recorded recipe for lichen-derived purple dye found on the Papyrus Graecus Holmiensis dating to the 3rd century AD Egypt. The recipe is written in Greek, which already speaks to it’s widespread use across cultures. And if you know anything about history, you might know that people went nuts for purple. Absolutely loved those purple textiles. They were used to signify wealth, rank, and royalty, since that purple color could only come from laborious and painstaking processes of collecting, grinding, and ammonia fixing of tiny mollusks, bugs, or lichens. Lichens were the least difficult of these organisms to collect, since they, you know, hold still, and don’t stink as bad as shellfish and bugs, so the use of lichens for purple dying really took off across Europe.

As natural history often goes, lichens were largely over exploited for their use in purple dyes over the centuries (cough cough, industrial revolution I am looking at you). It doesn’t help that lichens (particularly the ones used to make purple) are extremely slow growing, impossible to cultivate on any sort of scale, and very sensitive to environmental change. We have records of huge populations of lichen completely obliterated by the large scale dying operations of 18th century, and this likely occurred long before that in other regions that we have a less robust history of. Due to habitat loss and continued human exploitation, Roccella lichens are imperiled in much of their costal habitat. So I don't personally think someone can ethically collect lichens for commercial dying.
But, I am a big fan of salvage lichen collection and dying! That's what I am working on currently, and have a large collection of lichens collected from trails, sidewalks, gutters, woodpiles, and public parks. I am very careful to only collect lichens I can ID as common and can actually use. This way my salvaging has little impact on the environment. IF you happen to live in an area where you can ethically salvage the right lichens for orchil, do it! It's a fun project, and it's a great way to introduce people to some lichens they may otherwise overlook. For example, when I was at Mont-Saint-Michel, they were cleaning the roccella lichens off the walls of the structure and they were piled up EVERYWHERE, and were destined for the bin. I was only able to collect a little, but if someone went into that situation prepared . . . I'd be purple with envy. These situations are few and far between for the purple-making lichens, but I have to believe they are out there.
Anyway, I have plans to share more of the info I have on lichen dyeing in the future. Keep an eye out! And happy crafting.

This is probably a very stupid question, but how did the Ancient Greeks measure time (in terms of years and months) ? What was their calendar like? What year would Alexander have viewed himself to be living in?
I love these sorts of daily-life details, so I may have got a little carried away…. Before I get into the weeds, however, I want to make everyone aware of a reference resource:
E. J. Bickerman, Chronology of the Ancient World. Thames & Hudson, 1968.
Yeah, it’s old now, but Bickerman spent most of his career on dating puzzles, and I don’t think there’s anything recent to match it. When I first was told about it years ago in my historiography class, I practically bounced off the walls. (My fellow grad students thought I’d lost my mind.)
I’m not sure of the best way to address this query—topically or geographically—but I’ll go with topically. I’ll also say upfront that I’m unfamiliar with Egypt, so they’re not much mentioned. Also, if you want more details on any particular system (Roman, Athenian, Babylonian, Jewish), there are plenty of online resources.
Long-count Calendar
How to number years across a span? Regnal years was most common in antiquity: year 1, year 2, year 3 of ___ king. Also, king lists detailed how long ___ ruled. The Ancient Near East (ANE) excelled at chronologies; we have some that go back to Sumer. That’s pre-Bronze Age. The span of some reigns can be deeply problematic (e.g., mythical), but we have the lists. Fun note, Neo-Assyrians named years by its major military campaign. Tells us a lot about them, no?
What about places without kings? Greece, Rome, Carthage?
The Greeks had several systems, internal and panhellenic. Internal systems often dated by the name of a prominent city magistrate. In Athens, that was the eponymous archon, in Sparta, the eponymous ephor, etc. The panhellenic system used Olympic years. In Dancing with the Lion, if you look at date plates before sections, that’s what I used. It’s a 4-year system, so, “In the year of the 97th Olympiad,” “In the first year of the 97th Olympiad,” “In the second year…,” and “In the third year…,” then we’re to “In the year of the 98th Olympiad…” In modern annotation it’s Ol. 97.1, Ol. 97.2, Ol. 97.3, Ol. 97.4. From (our year) 776 BCE down into the Roman Imperial era, the Olympics made useful anchor dating for the eastern Mediterranean (Magna Graecia).
Rome had its own system: two in fact. It counted years by both consuls, but also AUC = ab urba condita … “from the founding of the city.” Carthage used a similar system involving their two senior Judges for their senate.
When it came to “world histories,” authors such as Diodoros Siculus used several systems: Olympiad, Athenian archon, and Roman consuls. It gets a bit unwieldy, but is about as universal as we have for the Med until Christianity took over everything.
Yearly Calendars
Much of the ancient world used lunar (354 days), not solar (356 days) calendars. Yes, they knew a lunar year didn’t line up with the solar, and they used “intercalation” to fix it, avoiding summer festivals being celebrated in winter. Either a 13th month was needed every 3 years, or they added a few days to months here and there, making a “lunisolar” calendar. We have an intercalated day in our own calendar: Feb. 29th in Leap Year. To fix a calendar, however, an “anchor” is needed. This anchor is usually a solstice or equinox, which may (or may not) correspond to their New Year.
Our modern (Western) world places New Year’s in the dead of winter. But many pre-modern calendars put it in spring. Makes sense: life renews, it’s a new year. The Babylonian New Year was decided by the spring equinox—first new moon after—which pattern affected most of the ANE.
The Hebrew New Year (Rosh Hashana) is in autumn, but their first month (Nisan) is in spring. (They also have a New Year for Trees! Tú bish'vat. How cool is that?) Wanna know when your Jewish friends are having a holiday? Use Hebcal, the gold standard.
MANY ancient cultures have more than one calendar running at a time. So do we. Working in the uni, I have the “normal” year, but also the “academic” year to keep up with.
Despite the dominance of certain early systems like Babylon, counting the new year was specific to a region and people, and their religious traditions. No single Greek new year tradition existed. Both Delos and Athens used the first new moon after the summer equinox: early July. The Macedonian calendar seems to as well, so Alexander was born in the first month of the year. Other city states were different. I’ve forgotten most but do remember Sparta’s is in autumn because their new year almost falls on my birthday.
Remember, although we today talk about “ancient Greece” as if it were a country—it wasn’t. There was a landmass called Hellas, but each city-state was independent, and had its own laws, gov’t, coinage, and religious cult. Too often “Greek” winds up being conflated with “Athenian,” because we happen to have the most evidence from ancient Athens. But both Athens and Sparta were weirdos. Corinth, Thebes, Argos, Mytilene, Cos, Eretria, Miletus…all were a lot more typically Greek in their gov’t systems, etc. There were also 3 (or 4) different branches of Greek: Ionic-Attic, Doric, and Aeolic. When we talk about reading the “ancient Greek” language today, most people mean Attic Greek, or even Koine Greek (Hellenistic era common Greek).
That means every city-state had its own calendar, connected to its own festivals.
In fact, most city-states had several: sacred, civic, etc. Athens had a 12-month lunar calendar for festivals, but a 10-month civic calendar corresponding to the 10 tribes for Assembly business. Originally, they had only 4 tribes, not 10, so political changes meant calendar changes.
In each city-state, month names were derived from the major festival for that month. We have the complete month names for only a few: Athens is one and (fortunately for me) Macedon is another (specifically Ptolemaic, but it’s likely the same as the Argead). Below “Ancient Greek Month” REALLY means “Athenian month,” which annoys the hell out of those of us who don’t consider Athens the be-all and end-all of Greek history!
Because their months were lunar, they bisect our months, e.g., July/Aug = Athenian Hekatombian or Macedonian Loos [Alexander’s birthmonth], Jan/Feb = Athenian Gamelion or Macedonian Peritios [probably the month that gave Alexander’s favorite hound his name: Peritos]. Likewise, as the Athenian new year began in midsummer, dating ancient events also bisects. You’ll see 342/1 to designate the year from July of 342 BCE to June of 341.
As mentioned, most places used lunar months as the most basic time-keeping, but the moon isn’t the only way to make a “month.” Rome originally had 10 months of 30/31 days, adding 2 later, which is why our 12 months have Romanesque names.
Just remember: NO UNIVERSAL SYSTEM for months.
What About Weeks?
A seven-day week is borrowed from the Jews via Christianity. Both Jews and Egyptians had a dedicated day of rest. (For Egypt, the 10th day.) In most places, however, days off were festival related. Every month had festivals, which might last from half a day to several days in a row. You worked…took off for a festival…then you worked. No regular day of rest. (For the modern weekend? Thank unions and the Labor Movement!)
How did others subdivide a month? Athenian months were c. 30 days, divided into 10s: 1-10, 11-20, 10-1. Yup, the last is backwards. But dating also counted waxing and waning moons. So the new moon began a month, the 7th of the month would be the 7th waxing moon, the 24th the 6th waning moon. This is the Athenian system. Other city-states are less clear, but probably similar.
Romans had kalens (1st), nones (7th), and ides (15th). Nundinae (market days) means 9th, but were really the 8th day. The 7-day week is late Imperial and, again, owes to Christian take-over of Jewish weeks.
Most systems had “auspicious” and “inauspicious” days for religious activities, civic activities, and business activities. Don’t start anything on an inauspicious day! (These were manipulated, especially in Rome, but that’s a whole different discussion.) The closest modern equivalent I can think of is Mercury Retrograde. 😊 Although in modern Greece, signing a contract on a Tuesday morning is bad juju, or May 29th. Constantinople fell on a Tuesday morning May 29th, 1453. We might, in America, consider 9/11. Who wants to open a business on 9/11?
The Horai (The Hours)
When did the day begin? Again, the ANE and Med are different. In the ANE, day typically began at sunset. So yes, that’s why the Jewish shabbat starts at sunset on Friday and lasts till sunset on Saturday. (If you didn’t know, the Jewish “day of rest” isn’t Sunday, but Saturday.)
For Greece and Rome, et al., day began at dawn. Each day was then evenly divided between day and night, so there was no standard length of an hour. It depended on the time of year. Each half had twelve hours, subdivided into 4 groups of triads. Originally in Greece it seems there were only 9, not twelve, but they increased to match the lunar months. The division of 4 groups of triads also yielded the 4 seasons of 3 months each. Hora was initially a season, not an hour.
In any case, dawn was always the first hour, noon the 6th, sunset the 12th. Same deal for night (twilight, midnight, pre-dawn).
This is great for military and civic purposes, but most people tended to refer to daytime divisions more generally: dawn, midday, etc. And there was nothing like minutes or seconds. That’s totally modern. Closest, they might come would be to count “breaths.”
The gnomon (sundial) was the chief way to measure hours, as it matched longer or shorter days. But it’s kinda hard to use a sundial at night, or on a cloudy day, or inside. Night hours were approximate.
The water clock (klepsudra) was first popularized in Greece in courts and the Assembly (to time speeches), but spread to other use, for inside or on shady days. Yet water clocks are unwieldy to carry around.
The Romans did have portable sundials (below), but again…needs the SUN. Btw, I should add that sundials aren’t only a Greco-Roman thing. The Chinese had them too. By contrast, the sand-clock or hourglass is a medieval invention. Won’t find them in the ancient world.

Smokey brand Retrospective: The Gift and the Curse
Brendan Fraser has seen a resurgence lately and i love every bit of that. Dude has been one of my favorite actors for decades. I’m an Eighties kid who grew up during the Nineties so i was right there when he came onto the scene. I was a massive fan f all of his early work; Bedazzled, George of the Jungle, Encino Man, Airheads, Blast from the Past, and even Monkeybone. Dude hit his stride right around the Aughts and then completely disappeared. We found out later it was because of some really f*cked up sh*t but he made it through and proved he still had with Robot Man on Doom Patrol. I’m so glad this guy got another shot at this movie star sh*t but i wanted to revisit the franchise that put him on the map: The Mummy.
The Mummy
I love this campy ass flick, man. I saw this one in the theaters because, at the time, i was super into CG. It had only been a few years since Jurassic Park blew that sh*t out the water and only a few months after The Matrix made everyone sh*t the bed. The Mummy just missed that window but it was still incredibly enjoyable. This was my Indiana Jones because i didn’t care about Indy for a long time. It’s not that they were bad movies, i was just too young to appreciate them. The Mummy came out right at the time i started to really understand why i liked cinema, what a good permanence truly was, and how beautiful a film could be. The Mummy covered almost all of those bases. Fraser did an excellent job as Rick O’Connor and Rachel Weisz stunned as Evelyn Carnahan. F*cking Evie, man. I was already a fan of Fraser but this movie made me really pay attention to Weisz and she became one of my favorite actresses. It helps tremendously that she is f*cking gorgeous! Rounding out the cast is John Hannah as Evie’s brother, Johnathan and Arnold Vosloo as the titular mummy, Imhotep. Also, i can’t not mention the scummiest of scumbags, Benny, portrayed so effortlessly by Kevin J. O'Connor.
I absolutely adore this film. It’s a not the best example of Nineties cinema, how can it be, and it’s a terrible remake of the original Universal Mummy but it does what it wants to do very well. I love the ideas and the world they built with this campy clusterf*ck. It shouldn’t work, it should be terrible, but it’s one of the funnest films i have ever seen. It has it’s issues, absolutely, but they are minor compared the non-stop action, the incredible cinematography, the dated but ambitious CG effects ,and solid performances from every principal actor. They really let Fraser do his thing and that energy carried over to the rest of the cast. Evie is every bit the bad ass as Sarah Connor or Ellen Ripley but is still a very girly-girl; Something that seems to be frowned upon nowadays. Imhotep id an unrelenting, vicious antagonist who controls powers from long ago, literally willing the seven plagues of Egypt into modern times. This movie is all over the f*cking place but it worse so well and every time i see it, i have as much fun as i did way back when i was a ripened fourteen years old.
The Mummy Returns
Boy, this one suffers terrible from Sequelitis. It does nothing new and is an almost exact retread of the first film but we have new characters and a new villain in the guise of... The Scorpion King! Yes, this is the first film that titular Arachno-Monarch makes his first appearance portrayed by a very young, very beefy, and later, very poorly rendered, Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson! That’s right, long before he was Franchise Viagra, way before he was punching out Dom into a stalemate in them god awful Fast flicks, The Rock got his start here, in the sequel to The Mummy and he’s f*cking terrible! Oh my god, is he bad but it works. His awful, awful, performance fits right in with the utter camp of this ridiculous franchise ans, to no one’s surprise, i loved every second of it. Now, as much as i love The Rock in this thing, i have to absolutely give it to Patricia Velasquez as Meela Nais, the physical reincarnation of Imhotep’s regicide partner and f*ck-buddy, Anck-Su-Namun. I didn’t talk about her much in the entry about The Mummy but that as mostly because she was more a plot device rather than a character. She isn’t much else in this one either but at least we got to actually see her for more than ten minutes. Plus, that fight between her and Nefertiri was f*cking glorious. Sixteen year old Smokey appreciated the f*ck out of that.
The returning cast hits their points perfectly. That chemistry never falters. Fraser, Weisz, and Hannah are exceptional together and Vosloo is, somehow, both far more menacing and hilarious at the same time. There’s this scene toward the end where he is utterly defeated and it’s the funniest sh*t i have ever seen. I also really enjoy both Oded Fehr as Ardeth Bay far more in this one than the last because he gets to do sh*t finally. Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje was also a welcome surprise as the muscle, Lock-Nah. Dude just kinds of stands around and i think he gets into a fight with Fehr that was pretty cool but a little trite. Obviously, as a film from the early Aughts, it has it;s problems. There’s a ton of culturally insensitive sh*t that Zoomers would probably be upset about but, you know, f*ck em. It’s like a sense f humor is illegal nowadays. That said, having Rachel Weisz, as gorgeous and half-naked as she is and was, portray an Egyptian is a little much nowadays. At least Patricia Velasquez is a type of Brown? An attempt was made. This thing is a mess and i enjoy every second of it. The Mummy Returns is substantially worse that the first but, at the same time, just so batsh*t that it is equally as entertaining. But f*ck that kid, though. Every time he’s onscreen all of the good times are thrown right out the goddamn window!
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
I gave this one the hard pass for years. It looked like trash. Like straight up dog sh*t. This thing came out seven years after Returns and i just didn’t care. I was one hundred percent in my hipster film snob era and couldn’t be bothered. For a full f*cking decade and some change. Seriously, i just watched this thing the day before yesterday. For the first time. It was the inspiration for this retrospective because, after seeing this train wreck, i went back to check out the first two just to get the taste of dogsh*t out of my mouth. There are several changes made to the formula that immediately take me out of this film. First, and most egregiously, no more Rachel Weisz! She didn’t come back for the third. The reason behind her absence has run the gambit from vanity, to scheduling conflicts, to literally never getting a script. I don;t really care why, all i know is that her absence was felt. Maria Bello did her best but she isn’t MY Evie. Another “choice” was to age up that awful f*cking kid into an awful f*cking adult. That’s right, this is a “passing of the torch flick” and Luke Ford’s Alex O'Connell was supposed to take over the franchise going forward. That didn’t happen because this is Rick’s franchise. The Mummy would be nothing without Fraser and the at was proven when this thing tanked. It wasn’t all bad though. I really liked the new mummy, Han. They did some really fin things with his abilities and Jet Li never once phoned in an action scene. Unfortunately, even with the strength of the brand and outstanding lead performances, this thing still sucks.
I had a time with Tomb but it wasn’t like the time i had with it’s predecessors. I don’t know if it’s because I'm so much older and hardened by life but all i see is the flaws in this one. It doesn’t have the nostalgia goggles like the first two so i can’t enjoy it like i enjoy those. I just see plot holes instead of camp. Bad CG instead of rustic attempt. Poor set pieces instead of Nineties jank. Bad character writing instead of unfortunately hilarious dialogue. Tomb isn’t terrible but it ain’t good wither. It;s mediocre and i know the first two aren’t great but they’re better than whatever this wanted to be. It’s weird to see because there are a lot of great ideas here. I can see the vision that lays outside the margins and it’s frustrating. Fraser does is in his element as Rick and Li’s Han is a physical powerhouse but that’s not enough. As awesome as this movie gets when those two are on screen, literally everything around them is dismissible and i don’t understand how or why. I think a lot of the chemistry was lost when the focus was shifted to Alex from Rick and the recasting of Eve really didn’t do this film any favors. However, even with all of my frustrations, i can’t say i had a terrible time with this thing. It was entertaining, if a little bogus.

[Image ID: Two fairly-normal-looking scorpions in a manuscript illustration. They are colored a light brown, and the ground beneath them has been given texture in a dark yellow.]
I'm going to try and get into the habit of putting my rambling thoughts below a cut:
So, first of all, for anyone curious, this is apparently MS Plut.40.52 in the collection of the Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana, and has been digitized (link here, the URL looks weird so I hope this works). The text is the Acerba, a work by Cecco d’Ascoli (1257–1327) -- I am sharing that detail because when I Googled it, I found this line in the author's Wikipedia entry:
The book by which he achieved his renown and which led to his death was the Acerba (from acervus), an encyclopaedic poem of which in 1546, the date of the last reprint, more than twenty editions had been issued.
Following the citation, I found that this sentence is verbatim from the Encyclopædia Britannica. Their entry isn't super clear on why it led to his death, but it kind of sounds like he was burned for heresy.
So that's fun. Anyway, scorpions. This particular manuscript is from 14th-century Florence, which you may recognize as being in Southern Europe, so this artist has probably seen a scorpion. I actually almost just ignored this because I was like, "I just did one where the scorpion drawing was accurate, I don't need to make a habit of posting just regular scorpions"... and then I looked closer. I'm going to go ahead and suggest that while this author may have seen a scorpion, they didn't examine one that carefully. So we can do these. I'm rating them together, because they're getting the same score (albeit for different reasons).
Now, I wanted to check the text, but I don't speak Italian. There is apparently an English translation out there by one Diane Murphy, but I'd have to either buy a copy or use Interlibrary Loan, either of which is more effort than I want to put into rating scorpions on the Internet. Anyway, the thing that really caught my eye about this... check out the one on the left.
That bastard has wings. They look more like insect wings than the feathery ones we see on the others, which one would expect from an artist who has seen a scorpion. If you have a general idea of what a scorpion is, and someone tells you that they can have wings, you're going to think of the wings you see on other bugs. (I'm assuming our artist does not know the term arthropod.)
This is why I wanted to check the text, to see if it mentions the wings. Those are, I think I've mentioned, a running theme because of medieval authors drawing on classical sources. I refer you to Pliny the Elder here:
For this pest of Africa, the southern winds have provided means of flight as well, for as the breeze bears them along, they extend their arms and ply them like so many oars in their flight; the same Apollodorus, however, asserts that there are some which really have wings. The Psylli, who for their own profit have been in the habit of importing the poisons of other lands among us, and have thus filled Italy with the pests which belong to other regions, have made attempts to import the flying scorpion as well, but it has been found that it cannot live further north than the latitude of Sicily. However, they are sometimes to be seen in Italy, but are quite harmless there; they are found, also, in many other places, the vicinity of Pharos, in Egypt, for instance.
Bostock, our translator here, thinks this is referring to the scorpionfly, which... sure, maybe. I have no idea, by the way, why Pliny thinks the Psylli are profiting from importing venomous creatures into Italy. A quick Google tells me they were an ancient people of North Africa who had a reputation as snake-charmers, so maybe that's the connection? Or maybe Pliny is just being bigoted.
The point is, Pliny thinks scorpions can fly on the wind by using their legs like oars, and refers to a previous writer who claimed they actually had wings (which makes more sense, let's be real). And a huge chunk of the medieval bestiary can be traced back to Pliny, so that's why so many scorpions have wings.
The artist of these particular scorpions gets them mostly right, though -- apart from the wings and those feet, which I am not convinced by -- and so let's move onto the points.
Small Scuttling Beaſtie? ✓
Pincers? ✓
Exoskeleton or Shell? ✓
Visible Stinger? left ✓, right ✘
Limbs? 10
As with a regular scorpion, I feel neutral-to-positive about these critters but do not want them in my house. 3/5.
And as previously mentioned, the one on the left has wings, which is an automatic -1, bringing both of them to the same score:
7 / 10
I'm still thinking about scorpions just rowing about in the air.
@maniculum Found these scorpions on the gallery section of bestiary.ca. How would the rate?
(I found your blog through your initial scorpion post, and I fell in love.)

What are your thoughts on the old guards and literacy ( past and present ) ?
I've reblogged some posts here (on why anything goes for literacy in medieval Europe), here (which touches upon oral history), here (a heartwarming take on reading aloud), and here (a humorous take), but I'd love to go in depth for you! As usual, the mega-post with pictures and more detailed explanations is below the cut-off.
TL;DR Summary of Literacy for Each Member:
Lykon: never needed to read or write, probably did neither
Andy: we see her read in the film, but might have only picked up reading in the last few centuries; doesn’t necessarily know how to write but would also be a fairly recent skill*
Quynh: may read or write, but similar to Andy would have been “recent” in the terms of her lifespan*
Yusuf: likely can read and write Arabic before his death, values literacy
Nicolo: total wild-card for either reading or writing, but we see him reading silently in the film so he has learned to read at some point; unclear whether he values it
Booker: very background-dependent for reading and writing, but values literacy as a social status symbol and clearly enjoys books from the film
Nile: can read and write and views it as an essential skill, but likely knows people who are illiterate and understands the socio-economics behind US literacy
*This is based on the fact that they never needed literacy to go about their lives, but they could have learned to read and write by the time that Yusuf and Nicolo die if they enjoyed it.
First off, what is literacy? If you ask someone or google it, chances are you’ll encounter the definition along the lines of “you can read and write.” This is a definition of literacy. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) defines it as “ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate and compute, using printed and written materials associated with varying contexts.” To summarize academic arguments, “literacy” could mean anything from “is able to read a newspaper” to “understands internet meme language” to “understands the doctor’s write-up after a visit.” For this post, I’ll broadly address the ability to read and the ability to write in an character system since that is what I imagine you are asking.
You can’t have someone read something if you don’t have someone to write in a mutually-intelligible language, so let’s start with the history of writing. The invention of writing has been awarded to Sumerian Cuneiform in ~3,100 BCE in southern Mesopotamia (modern day Iraq and Iran near the Persian Gulf). It was done on clay tablets by trained scribes, primarily for boring things like business and government. Below is a picture of a tablet so you can see what cuneiform looked like. They eventually settled on writing left-to-right and didn’t have any punctuation (not even spaces between words!).
[ID: “Sumerian cuneiform tablet, probably from Erech (Uruk), Mesopotamia, c. 3100–2900 BCE; in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City” from here. The Met attributes it as “administrative account of barley distribution with cylinder seal impression of a male figure, hunting dogs, and boars.”]
Another notable old language is (Old) Egyptian. The first complete sentence dates back to 2690 BCE and was done using hieroglyphs (shown below). This language was used throughout Egypt and Nubia, which translates to modern-day Egypt and Sudan. The language didn’t really pick up, from what archaeologists can tell, until around 2600 BCE where writing starts proliferating...and then is soon replaced with Middle Egyptian. Fun fact: the word “hieroglyphs” comes from the Greeks, but the Egyptians referred to their script as (transliterated) “medu-netjer” or “the god's words” because it was a gift from Thoth (yes, that guy with the falcon head who may also be accredited as Thot).
[ID: picture of a seal impression from the tomb of Seth-Peribsen. It reads “The Ombite (i.e. Set) has given the Two Lands to his son, Dual King Peribsen.”]
Skipping over a few more writing systems developed in the Middle East and surrounding regions, we finally get to the first records of Old Chinese in 1250 BCE with the inscription on oracle bones shown below. From the get-go, there were at least three different scripts of Old Chinese: oracle bone, bronze, and seal. I’ve also added a bronze script so that you can see the differences.
[ID: ox scapula oracle bone from the reign of King Wu Din. The fragments read “ ...divined: in the next ten days there will be no disasters... (day 40) Zheng divined: in the next ten days there will be no disasters. (day 41) ... cleaved to (day 42) ... fifth month, in Dun... (day 50) Zheng divined: in the next ten days there will be no disasters. ... (day 50) Zheng divined: in the next ten days there will be no disasters. Third day, (day 52) ... (day 54) ... The Gui will also have sickness ...” ]
[ID: Rubbing of an engraving found on multiple objects which notes the appointment of a man named Song as supervisor of the storehouses in Chengzhou.]
As you can see, early writing would not have interested the earliest members of the Old Guard. The things that were being written down were things that were important to those governing and those in business. I really don’t think that Lykon, Andy, or Quynh would have cared much about the barely distribution or who’s in charge of the storehouse, and they wouldn’t have been important enough to keep their own oracle on retainer. If we use the timeline I developed for my history of language asks (~8,000BCE - 7,000BCE Horn of Africa Lykon, ~5,000BCE - 4,000BCE Caucauses Andy, and ~3,500BCE - 2,500BCE Southeast Asia Quynh), then they all predate the invention of writing excluding the younger range of Quynh’s possible birth which places her after the invention but still culturally separated from it. Lykon could have died without ever having to learn how to read or write, Andy was old before it was invented let alone became popular, and Quynh is from a time where writing was not common. This is a hot take, but there is a non-zero chance that if Quynh disliked reading/writing and resisted learning it, she could have been locked in the coffin without being solidly literate. Imagine the first language you really have to read after 500 years now that literacy is a requisite for society is French, which doesn’t even sound how it looks (I’m looking at you, silent -ent at the end of most present-tense verbs). Painful.
This brings us to the next question we should answer for these older members: when would reading or writing have become useful and important to them? This is obviously much more difficult to answer. Because of oral history traditions, they wouldn’t need to read for entertainment (that whole concept must be mind-boggling). Because they probably didn’t do much large-scale trade coordination, they wouldn’t need to write for business. I can’t see any of them working for the government. As much as I love the joke about Quynh recognizing wanted posters, that wasn’t a thing until right before the 19th century in Europe. Quite frankly, I don’t think Andy or Quynh has a compelling interest in learning to read until the 1700s at the earliest unless they want to and enjoy the idea of writing (perhaps introduced by the younger immortal couple?).
Yusuf and Nicolo are a different story altogether, as they were both born after the invention of writing had become fairly common (ie. books were a thing and people used them, though they were rare and expensive). A longer and far better post than I could write explains that literacy in medieval Italy was in no way uniform: Nicolo is a total toss-up. He might have only known how to write, only known how to read, done both, or done neither even if he was a monastic priest or even a scribe who copied manuscripts. As a member of a merchant family, this still holds because 1) he might not have been the child raised to take over the business; and 2) you could pay people to do that pesky writing thing for you if it was absolutely necessary.
Yusuf came from a society which valued reading, especially in religious contexts. It’s called the Islamic Golden Age for a reason! Young children were schooled in Arabic and the Quran, though it might have been memorization-based. Older students would be taught to read and possibly to write as well in order to engage in scholarship around their sacred texts. He is from the beginning of the creation and popularity of madrasa (literally just “place of study”) as institutions of learning. He probably had an entire curriculum he studied, like modern schooling. Given that we can all agree that Yusuf comes from a wealthy background, it is a safe assumption that Yusuf can read Arabic and it is probably also safe to assume that he can write in it. I’d say that, if you are writing him as particularly wealthy or scholarly, he is probably even trained in the art of calligraphy (see an example below) which is to say he can write BEAUTIFULLY. The example picture is simply words on paper like we’d expect of a modern book, but calligraphy would be integrated into architecture and pictures. Don’t tempt me to make another post on this beautiful art form.
[ID: Maghrebi script from a 13th-century northern African Quran, thanks to Wikipedia.]
Moving on to 1770s France, literacy was becoming common but still varied with social class (especially before the Revolution) and it’s not clear whether Booker would have learned to read and write. It’s ironic that many areas of the country did not have had more than 40% MEN’S literacy while at the same time the country was considered a hub of the Enlightenment with it’s institutions of higher learning. The North/South cultural divide that I’ve hinted at here and here, shows up in the literacy rates as well. As a Southern sharecropper or laborer, he would be very likely illiterate. As a Southern peasant, we approach a 50/50 chance as he becomes more wealthy. As an artisan (if anyone headcannons this), he most likely is literate though the extent varies with wealth. Whether Booker knows how to read and write before his death is closely linked to class and wealth, but he would value literacy as a major social status signifier and be motivated to learn if he didn’t already.
[ID: four maps depicting “men” and “women” literacy rates for the period of 1686-1690 versus the period of 1786-1790. Adapted from "Reading and Writing: Literacy in France from Calvin to Jules Ferry, 1982."]
This brings us to modern history for Nile. Compulsory schooling for children is present in the US and being illiterate is (unfairly) associated with being unlearned. She was definitely taught to read and write in school, and literacy has been an essential skill throughout her entire life. This doesn’t mean that she is necessarily disrespectful of any illiteracy, because thirty percent of Chicago adults would “benefit” from literacy instruction. Literacy is still tied to class (and thus race) for a lot of Americans, though less strikingly for 1770s France. Nile probably knows some adults in her life who are illiterate or struggle with literacy and would understand that this is tied to socio-economics.

George deValier (2015 profile)
since: 05-02-10, id: 2348750, Profile Updated: 06-02-13
country: 🇦🇺 Australia
Author has written 17 stories for Hetalia - Axis Powers.
If I lose the light of the sun, I will write by candlelight, moonlight, no light. If I lose paper and ink, I will write in blood on forgotten walls. I will write always. I will capture nights all over the world and bring them to you. – Henry Rollins
Hi! I’m George. One day, I will be a professor of history, who wears tweed suits and lives in a library. Right now, I am a graduate student, who wears jeans and t-shirts and… um… lives in a library.
Reviews and PMs.
I don’t demand or even expect reviews. They do, however, make me happy. So if you are kind enough to leave one after reading, please know that even though I may not reply, I read every single one, and I am incredibly grateful - your few words of praise have brightened a moment of my day. :-)
If you send me a Private Message and don’t receive a response immediately, please know that I am not deliberately ignoring you. I find it a little difficult to keep up with replying to PMs; if I haven’t responded to your message in at least three months, it’s usually because I’ve, er, lost it. Feel free to send me another one calling me a giant prat and demanding a response.
Fanart and Translations.
I am perfectly okay (quite ecstatically happy, actually) with people doing whatever they like with my fics – whether that be translations, fanart, cosplay, AMVs, whatever. You do not need to ask permission - I will always say yes. All I ask is three things. One: please credit me as the author (and a link to the original story would be fantastic). Two: please let me know so that I can check it out and thank you profusely! And three: something I hate to have to mention, but please never do anything to make money out of these works. Obviously, Hetalia does not belong to me – it belongs to the amazing Hidekaz Himaruya, who is incredibly awesome for giving us such fantastic characters to play with. :-D
MY STORIES
THE VERAVERSE
The Veraverse is a Hetalia World War Two AU, of fics involving different characters and pairings, all living within the same time period and all interconnected in some way. As each story in the series is named after and loosely based on the lyrics of a wartime song sung by Vera Lynn, I flippantly dubbed it the ‘Veraverse.’ The name has sort of stuck, however. I have posted a list of character's birth dates here: http://george-de-valier.deviantart.com/art/Hetalia-Veraverse-Birth-Dates-340315828
This series is, at its core, about the power of love over war. It's about the real reasons people fight, and the real reasons they survive. It's about finding something beautiful in the midst of something ugly and evil. But overall, although I hope there is more to these stories than just romance, they are essentially about love.
Don’t expect every fic to be updated quickly. These stories intertwine, and will be published simultaneously, and it may be a while between chapters for each specific story. Most can be read separately, however a few will require that you read at least one other story in the series to make sense of it (e.g. ‘My Echo’ does not make much sense unless you also read ‘Lily of the Lamplight.’) Rest assured, they will all be completed.
We'll Meet Again Alfred Jones/Arthur Kirkland (America/England)
Complete - Thirteen Chapters
‘We’ll Meet Again’ is about love arriving when you least expect it, and how it can transform loneliness.
Keep Smiling Through Alfred Jones/Arthur Kirkland (America/England)
Complete – One Shot
Just a little mini-sequel to ‘We’ll Meet Again’ about a brief moment in Alfred and Arthur’s lives.
Auf Wiedersehen, Sweetheart Ludwig Beilschmidt/Feliciano Vargas (Germany/Italy)
Complete - Eighteen chapters
‘Auf Wiedersehen, Sweetheart’ is about love being blind, proving stronger than hate, and lasting longer than war.
Bésame Mucho Antonio Fernandez Carriedo/Lovino Vargas (Spain/Romano)
In Progress – Fourteen chapters
‘Bésame Mucho’ is essentially about love overcoming fear.
Lily of the Lamplight Gilbert Beilschmidt/Roderich Edelstein (Prussia/Austria)
In Progress – Eighteen Chapters
‘Lily of the Lamplight’ is about selflessness, survival, and how love can change you for the better.
My Echo Unrequited Vash Zwingli/Roderich Edelstein (Switzerland/Austria)
In Progress – Six Chapters
‘My Echo’ is about how true love is selfless – even if it is unreturned.
Jealousy Ivan Braginski/Yao Wang (Russia/China)
In Progress – Six Chapters
‘Jealousy’ is a little different to the other stories in this series. It is about control, madness, and how love has the power to destroy as well as to save.
Something to Remember You By Sadik Adnan/Gupta Muhammad Hassan (Turkey/Egypt)
In Progress – Three Chapters
‘Something to Remember You By’ is about losing love, and yourself with it.
UPCOMING VERAVERSE FICS
Somewhere in France With You Francis Bonnefoy/Matthew Williams (France/Canada)
Darling, where better to meet again than the most beautiful city in the world?
It's a Lovely Day Tomorrow
Toris Laurinaitis/Feliks Łukasiewicz (Lithuania/Poland)
Art. Music. Passion. Destruction. Young, wild love, in the streets of Berlin, on the eve of war.
When I Grow Too Old to Dream Berwald Oxenstierna/Tino Väinämöinen (Sweden/Finland)
“What would you do if I just… took this tree? Claimed it for Finland?”
“I’d let ye take it.”
“This lake?”
“Ye can have it.”
“This entire forest?”
“’t’s yours.”
“Would you let me take your whole country, Berwald?”
“Yes. And you? What’f I just… took this rock?”
“You can’t have that rock. That’s a Finnish rock.”
You’ll Never Know
Elizaveta Héderváry/ Lili Zwingli (Hungary/Liechtenstein)
“But who knows? Maybe you'll meet a charming little Swiss girl with plaits and a basket who likes to yodel on mountaintops."
Elizaveta always hated it when Gilbert was right.
When the Lights go on Again
Eduard Von Bock/Raivis Galante (Estonia/Latvia)
"I will stay with him through this darkness. I will give my soul to keep it from him. And I swear, whatever I must do, that Raivis Galante will live to see the lights go on again.”
Room Five-Hundred-and-Four
Herakles Karpusi/Kiku Honda (Greece/Japan)
“Life's most important conversations take place in bars. Perhaps in places not too dissimilar from this - perhaps between people not so different from ourselves. Bars, after all, are where people meet, and where they rejoice; where they forget, and where they say goodbye. They are the crossroads of life."
"You sound like a philosopher. Though your name suggests a hero."
Faraway Places
Bad Friends Trio (France, Prussia, and Spain)
“Ah, those were the days, huh, Gil? Remember the time you tried to take on the entire Parisian police force?”
“Or the time you knocked yourself out running from that bull in Pamplona?”
“Or that time Francis tried to seduce your grandfather?!”
“Francis what?”
“Oh, look at that, I’ve finished my drink.”
Autumn Leaves
Augustus Roma Vargas (Ancient Rome)
But I miss you most of all, my darling, when autumn leaves start to fall.
OTHER FICS
THE MAPLEVERSE
This is a currently small modern AU, set in modern day Canada.
La Patisserie de la Rose Francis Bonnefoy/Matthew Williams (France/Canada)
Complete – Six Chapters
A birthday present for Claudia, aka ThisCouldTheoreticallyBeSparta
An essentially fluffy Franada with lots of cameos and cake and general silliness. I like to think this story is about friendship as much as it is about love. It's also about seeing something in someone that no one else can - not even themselves.
Libelle Hall Gilbert Beilschmidt/Roderich Edelstein (Prussia/Austria)
In Progress – Three Chapters
A Gift for Kay, aka Kay the Beta
‘Libelle Hall’ is about change, and about love growing from self-realisation. It’s also an examination of Gilbert and Roderich’s characters, and how they aren’t that different from each other, after all. And it’s a gift for my beta Kay, because she loves PruAus, and she’s awesome.
Of Ponies and Edelweiss Gilbert Beilschmidt/Roderich Edelstein (Prussia/Austria)
Complete – One Shot
A Valentines’ Day present for Claudia
Just a fluffy, romantic little fic for Valentines’ Day. Well, as romantic as Gilbert gets, anyway.
ONGOING MULTI-CHAPTERS
Catch Perfect Berwald Oxenstierna/Tino Väinämöinen (Sweden/Finland)
In Progress – Twelve Chapters
‘Catch Perfect’ is basically proof that I can’t even write crack without some semblance of plot and angst. I am still writing this, just ever so slowly.
The Tiger and the Dragon Ivan Braginski/Yao Wang (Russia/China)
In Progress – Seventeen Chapters
I first posted this story almost three years ago. Last year I started re-publishing it, mainly to fix up the writing quality and some plot points. Yes, it’s melodramatic; yes, it’s a bit cliché. Basically, if this were a published novel, it would be the type to have GAY EROTIC ROMANCE in tacky writing across the cover. But really, what the hell, it’s fun. :-D
COMPLETED ONE SHOTS
Stay With You Germany/Italy
A rare story with the characters as nations, and my very first posted fanfiction. I had just discovered Hetalia when I wrote this, and loved the random humour of it, but also wondered what it could be like if it was a more serious take on the Second World War. Also, it has always been blatantly obvious to me that Germany and Italy are in love with each other. Like, duh.
Gallipoli Australia and New Zealand
Another nation story from me, about a conflict embedded in the consciousness of every Australian. We haven’t been given much to go on with Australia’s characterisation, so I went with my gut instinct – he’s anti-authority, he’s an easily broken optimist, and he cares deeply about his men. Gallipoli shattered the romantic idea of war for this country. I think it would have shattered Australia, too.
Sleep, Little Bird Berwald Oxenstierna/Tino Väinämöinen (Sweden/Finland) and Peter (Sealand)
There is not much I can really say about this one, except sorry. Oh, and that it’s not in the same universe as ‘Catch Perfect.’ I wouldn’t do that. ;-)

hp update: its been a long time, boys. ud think that with this plague outbreak id have more time for shitty phone games, and ud be right! however, the time i normally might use to make tumblr posts has been taken up by reading lotr orc fanfiction non-stop for at least 1 full month. id still be in the thick of that obsession even now if only the fics would update. that is how i find you today folks, for the first time in many weeks i am staring at a screen with nothing to do. so come with me friends, theres no better way to fill the soulless void we are all in than reading a nice long tumbler post.
disclaimer, first of all, a lot has happened, i prefer to keep these updates as plot spoiler free as possible but do to extenuating circumstances i feel like it is necessary to say, [SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER BELOW]
that rowan fucking died,
i wont say exactly how, but i will say that her death was animated as were animations of myself and a few others reacting to our friend fresh corpse. obviously meant to be serious moments but the animations made it seem almost comical.
i saw at least one post going around right after this update that was like ‘how could the game devs do this to us..... how could they hate rowan so.... this is punishment from on high’ and its like.... u guys do know what a story is right? the events of a story are not typically done to punish less faithful fans, im pretty sure they were planning to kill rowan off from the beginning. this isnt disney im pretty sure the writers are not writing each chapter the night before its released by popular vote.
that little “are we drifting away..?” scene with rowan makes more sense now. there was a bit in one of the scenes where the kids all reminisce on rowans life and the mc talks about it being the last real one on one time they had with rowan. a nice bitter sweet moment. i dont hate this turn of events. its a good reminder that actions have consequences and we are way past they days of “should i wear a hat or scarf?” its YA time now.
i did manage to take 1 screenshot from this time, i had commented that before that when rowan said she didnt have many friedns that barnaby seemed to be hanging out with her without be there as a friend buffer and here was his reaction to her death:
;_;
the funniest part in all of this however, was of course cedericks reaction to rowans death “but she was so young....” LOL fuckin RIP.
lets see... what else.... i forget a lot of what happened but i think there was a time sensitive quidditch event in there somewhere? if so i dont remember it. what i do remember of the quidditch pals is that im gonna play beater now, skye is being weird and cagey about it, andre is involved.... the others are there.....
sidenote, i love the shitty b characters they throw in to be like yes you know this person but no they are not cool enough for u to even think about befriending. the first one of those is face paint kid, and now we have another, who is a former beater girl with horrible bangs named bean who didnt go to any classes for a whole season so she could just play ball 24/7 and got kicked off the team. this is a character who only exists to provide an explanation as to why there would be a beater position open but i love them on principle.
right now im in the midst of another time sensitive event, this one is a bother-your-brother-at-work-day event where recent hogwarts graduate bill weasley is bullied by myself and his younger brother charlie into letting us go with him on one of his curse breaking jobs.
so for those unfamiliar, bill works for the magical bank of england.... and his job seems to be “retrieving treasure” for said bank. in the books, there is a bit where he takes his family on one of his trips to egypt, where his job seemed to have been tomb plundering indiana jones style for the posterity of the english bank :X. i wont explain here why thats bad but its bad.
the game devs however in this instance, at least SEEM to be doing what jkr couldnt do by attempting to salvage what is left of gringotts bank and form it into not a super shitty implications factory run by horrible jewish caricatures. bills mission is to retrieve a goblin made artifact that was taken by dragons, so no going to foreign countries to steal things from other people! only going to a dragon reserve to rifle through animal nests. they even appear to be providing us with a likable goblin character, egad!
my hope for this event is that we get a plotline about how maybe, goblins arent shifty human haters for no reason, and in fact they hate magic humans for very understandable reasons, like being forced to go into hiding with the rest of the magical world even though only the humans wanted to do that, and maybe despite running the bank in england they still dont have a lot of political sway in the world of wizards and witches, and have to rely on the faith that said wizards and witches wont fuck them over at every turn, even as they see how they treat other non-humans, such as house elves, which they desperately dont want to end up like. and maybe they DONT only care about gold... maybe thats a human stereotype based on the fact that theres a long history of humans not respecting goblin ownership customs.... which i could get into..... but i wont.... i just....... very badly dont want them to suck ;__________;
i know i said its ok to still like a piece of media as long as you recognize the problems with it, and i do, but once this game is done im gonna stop hp posting all together. ive been feeling more and more uncomfortable making these posts lately.
GENERAL GAME NOTES; theres been some new layout changes and such.
most notably the stairs screen has been changed from a bulleted list of all locations to a screen with tiles picturing an image of each location along with the name + icons of all classes at each place. there is one additional location that is new and yet to be unlocked, and the dragon reservation is appearing temporarily as its own tile as well. i prefer this method of getting in and out of a temporary location to how they did it with car during the last christmas special. the stairs icon also now stays in the corner when you scroll through locations, allowing you to open the stairs menu without scrolling all the way back to the left.
they also moved a few of the buttons down into the lower left corner rather than the left side & combined the story button and sidequest button. they added a little camera button as well, just like in the dormitory, that makes all the icons in a location disappear and look better for screenshots.
the daily special add offer thing now has its own button in the top right corner of the screen, and idk if i mentioned it before but now there are daily challenges that appear in the sidequest screen that offer small rewards for completing 3 tasks per day + a better one if u get all 3. the prizes are things like 4 energy, 75 coins, 3 monster food. the better rewards are usually either more coins, 8 energy, 3 gems, or 1 notebook. i think that it does all the different color notebooks but i cant remember for sure if i ever saw the gold one up as a reward. i like this addition in any case. if you dont pick up ur reward by the end of the day, the next time u log on it will force u to stop and accept them, and if one of the rewards is energy and ur energy bar is full, it does not seem to stack beyond the bar so watch out.
the character stats page is now more zoomed out so you can see your full character instead of just from the waist up. no change to the leaderboard. rowans face in the friendship roster is now a still black and white image that says ur friend may be gone but friendship is forever u-u.
rowan has been removed from all classes. in the classes where the minigames involved her, those minigames have passed the mantle onto other friends in the class. in potions that person is now liz helping u find stuff off the shelves and in tranfiguration that person is badeea. bless these girls for helping mc get through it. touched my heart.
theres been a few fun little “i know u have more free time now so uhhhh have some energy” prizes like they do sometimes when they dont update on schedule so thats been nice. just a few days ago they gifted us 3 gold notebooks the same way. :O.
theres also been a few instances of a energy happy hour where for a limited time energy takes less time to refresh. normally it takes 4 mins for 1 energy to do this but during happy hour its like 2:30 mins. :U its all very interesting.
and that will have to do it for tonight my friends, ill do a post for the dragon event when its done because i do like it so far and i do like getting to bully bill with charlie.
until next time, remember.......

when i said it i thought it was true [4] {Ben Hardy}
A/N: 2973 words. Listen, I massaged the timeline a little bit, just suspend your disbelief, perhaps it only takes 4 months to be in post production. Also yes I know X-Men didn’t actually film in Egypt, but I didn’t know that at the start of this fic and now I’m sticking with my mistakes because momma didn’t raise a quitter but she did raise a fool.
[part 1] [part 2] [part 3]
“You’re not proposing to me in a sheer shirt.” The moment the makeup team leaves, you turn on Ben, amusement tugging at your lips as you cross your arms, cocking your hip.
“You don’t like it?” He asked, the picture of innocence as he fiddles with the cuff of his jacket. You raise a singular eyebrow. “I think you do like it.” He hummed, a mischievous sparkle in his eye. When you refuse to break eye contact, your silence is answer enough. “I think you like it a lot.”
It’s been almost a four months since shooting officially wrapped, two since you’d filmed the last of the pick up shots they’d needed, and a full month since you and Ben seen each other in person; you’d been busy with a Netflix series, and Ben had been in talks about a new project, and you’d been messaging every day but seeing each other in person is... well there’s something different. Playful. Easy. Somehow neither of you seem worried about the looming proposal, and are just making up for lost time.
“Love, you’ve gotta take it up with the stylist, not me.” He shrugged, as if helpless, and turned, making his way to the door, knowing without even looking that you’ll be following behind him. He’s chipper, brimming with excitement and looking damn good, and once he gets to the elevator and pushes the button, he offers you his arm while he waits.
“Marry me.” He says it suddenly, watching the numbers of the elevator tick up to your floor. There’s no-one around, and the ring is still in his pocket.
“What?” With a frown, you step into the elevator, and press the button for the lobby, still tucked up against him.
“What if we just show up engaged?” He asks, hand in his pocket where he’s fiddling with the ring box. He’s not nervous, just contemplative.
“And deprive Swarovski of their moment?” You scoffed, and he tipped his head to look at you, eyebrows raised in exasperated amusement.
“I know you hate the ring, ‘too gaudy, too ostentatious by half’, isn’t that what you said?” He snickers after doing as half decent imitation of you. Giving him a shove, you duck your head to hide your embarrassed smile.
“It’s so ‘look at me! Look at me!’” You huff, and he can’t help but laugh at that. The sound of it, in person rather than over Skype, made you feel, for lack of a better phrase, like you were home. Not that there really was a better phrase, you just didn’t want to think about or admit how much you’d missed him.
“Sorry to say, dude, but there’s nothing more ‘look at me! Look at me!’ than a red carpet proposal.” And yeah, okay, maybe he had a point, but that was one night, you had to wear that ring until... they hadn’t told you the DVD release date, but you’re pretty sure it was some time in the New Year. When you bring this up, he just rolls his eyes. “You’re not the one getting down on one knee for a fake proposal; I’m gonna look like an idiot when this is all over.”
“Well fine, if you’re so worried, I’ll propose.” Instead of dwelling on his words, you step away, holding your hand out expectantly. When he just stares at you, bewildered, you motion for him to hand the ring box over, and he finally cracks a grin, shaking his head.
“If you think I’m gonna be caught dead in that ring you’re wrong.” He spluttered, and you can’t help but laugh at that.
“Fine, I won’t take your first proposal away from you.” You hum with a smile, tucking yourself back against him. He goes very quiet. It takes you a few moments, but you look up at him, brow furrowed. He seems lost in his own thoughts. “It- Ben you’ve never been engaged before, I feel like I’d know if you had been.” Your words snap him out of his trance and he looks at you with wide, bright eyes, and an unconvincing smile.
“Yeah, no, I would have told you by now otherwise.” The silence that falls around you in not a comfortable one, and you’re glad when the elevator comes to a stop. “I got close once, though.” He admits, quietly. You don’t know how to respond to that; you hadn’t considered how much those words would hurt. You want to ask with who, but you already felt an unreasonable rush of jealousy at the thought of someone else stealing his heart enough for him to want to be with them forever. Unreasonable jealousy.
Filming for X-Men started a week ago and he’s only called you once; he’s on a film lot somewhere in Canada and his hair is curly and god he looks cute but the apartment feels so empty. He’s bright eyed and excited. He’s rambling about how busy he is, and he’s still wearing his makeup. The call lasts five minutes; the cast are going out for dinner. You tell him to have fun, but you’re heart’s not in it; he can sense it, and promises to call you tomorrow, before he hangs up.
He doesn’t call, part of you isn’t surprised.
“Marry me.” He asks again, voice low in your ear. The others in the car can’t hear him, but part of you is afraid they might. They don’t technically know it’s not a real relationship, though part of you thinks Gwilym has his doubts, not that he’d ever voice them.
“Not the time.” You shoot him a warning look, and he just slings an arm around you, leaning back in his seat.
“You’ll regret not letting me be low-key about it.” He warns in return, giving you a blithe smile, and you narrow your eyes at him.
“Low-key about what?” Lucy asks, and you elbow Ben in the ribs. He keeps smiling, though his mischievousness slides to something more fond as he actually looks at you.
“About anything.” You say by way of explanation, and though she, along with the rest of the car, still look confused, they don’t push it. There’s reporters everywhere when you get out of the car, and you and Ben are the last ones out.
“Last chance before this becomes a spectacle.” He murmurs when he steps out after you, straightening the back of your dress just a little, and he sounds amused, but there’s something genuine in his voice, and you take a moment to pause, turning back to him. His hands land on your hips, his touch light, and his expression is so familiar it hurts, and you realise he is a little nervous; it’s a very public setting for what should be a very private matter. With cameras going off all around you, you pull him in for a kiss, and he relaxes somewhat, kissing you back with his grip tightening on your hips.
“We’re being paid to be a spectacle.” You remind him, and he nods, smiling softly, and the two of you make your way down the red purple carpet together. You have to stop every few feet to do interviews, and soon enough you had pulled ahead of Ben; he had a much larger part in the film that you did, it wasn’t surprising the reporters wanted to monopolise him. It still felt strange, to turn and not have him there. Sometimes you’d do interviews with the other boys, sometimes he’ll be there, and as the main photo area loomed, you could finally feel the butterflies in your stomach.
Soon.
Perhaps too soon.
“What do you mean you’re going to Egypt?” You snapped, wishing your internet connection was better so he could see you glaring clearly.
“I told you about it ages ago.” Ben sighs, clearly tired. It’s there in his eyes, how drained he is, how hard he’s been working, and your expression softens.
“That’s exciting,” you force yourself to take a breath, it was the first time you two had spoken that fortnight, neither of you needed this to be hostile. The days had started feeling so long when you don’t hear from him; all you want is a damn hug and he’s on the other side of the world. “What if I come visit you?”
“In Egypt?” He asks, eyebrows raised.
“In Egypt.” You confirm, a weak smile on your face, he doesn’t look thrilled by the process.
“Don’t bother.” He sighs, and the moment he sees your expression fall, he realises how his words had sounded, and he’s sitting up straight, panicked look on his face, spluttering his way through an apology. “I didn’t mean it like that, I’m just busy and it’s going to be hot and-”
“No, I get it.” Your dejected sigh was followed by a yawn, and you hovered over the end call button. “When you’re less tired I think we should talk.” You tell him, and you see the confusion, fear, and resignation pass over his face in quick succession.
He agrees quietly, and neither of you really say goodbye before hanging up.
He was tapping on your shoulder as you were halfway through talking to E! News, and you’ve never been more anxious and excited in your life, and never so thankful to not be at the main photo area on a red carpet. His timing was perfect.
“So sorry, could I borrow Y/N for a minute?” He smiles charmingly at the reporter, and his expression softens when he sees the relief in your eyes.
Before he even starts, it feels off, feels wrong, feels like a performance for the cameras more than anything else.
“Don’t get teary on me, I know how hard your makeup artists worked.” He begins, and you make sure the cameras catch your surprised confusion. He’s takes one of your hands in his, linking your finger together, and the other holds your face. There’s a moment that passes between you two, his expression softens as he looks in your eyes and it’s as if he’s looking past everything that had happened, the whole setup you’d found yourself in; he was seeing you.
“This is probably the biggest night of my life,” he starts, taking a deep breath, “for more than one reason; you’re my best friend, you’ve been there for some of the highest points in my life, and some of the lowest. I know you, Y/N, I feel like I’ve known you my whole life, and I want to. I want you there by my side for the rest of it,” it sounds... so much more planned out than you’d expected, so much more heartfelt, and you’d be damned if there weren’t tears in your eyes. Despite the fact that this very private moment had a huge audience, which included a reporter muttering ‘holy shit, is this what I think it is?’, you could only see him. Damn if it didn’t feel real.
“I love you; I’ve loved your since-” his voice catches in his throat, and you see a hint of pain flash across his face before he’s smiling again, “since I first saw you in that damn wig they put you in,” it sounds like an addendum, like he doesn’t really mean it, or like it’s not the whole truth, but it’s enough to make you laugh, and when you look down to hide your embarrassed smile, your tears fall from your eyes, “since you agreed to all of this,” he gestures to himself with a self-deprecating grin, though his double meaning is not lost on you, though his expression turns serious after a moment, “since I first kissed you on set, though that feels like a long time ago.” Your breath catches in your throat, and he sounds like he hadn’t mean to say that last part, his voice too raw, his heart too honest for it to be a truly fake statement. You can do little more than whisper his name in reverence. Gently, so gently, he lifts your head, his thumb wiping the tear track from your cheek.
“Marry me?” It’s a question this time, and when you look at him with confusion, disbelief written on your face at the way he chose to word it, he laughs softly, sinking to one knee and pulling out the ring box, and revealing the single most frivolous ring you’d ever had the displeasure of seeing. “Will you marry me?” He corrects softly.
The crowd behind you is going absolutely mad behind you, and cameras are going off at an almost blinding rate, but his eyes don’t leave yours. Nodding, you can’t even form words, so caught up in the moment, and he stands, pulling you into a kiss. The flash of cameras surround you like a sea of stars and Ben’s the only thing keeping you on solid ground. His grip is tight enough that he almost lifts you off the ground, and you’re on your tiptoes with his arms around you before his grip loosens, his hands sliding down the small of your back, and for the first time since this whole fake relationship began, he doesn’t hesitate before he deepens the kiss. He tastes like mint and you’re so glad you’re wearing that twenty-four hour lipstick or you know you’d be a mess, and when you pull back, you’re both out of breath, looking at each other with a something akin to awe in your eyes.
You’re pretty sure, in this moment, you love him; nothing fake about it. And you can see it in his eyes that he loves you too. This is dangerous territory for you both.
Stepping back, he takes your hands again.
“I told you not to cry, love.” He laughs gently, voice so soft as you dab at your eyes with your right hand, watching as he slides the ring onto the ring finger of your left hand.
“What can I say, you have a way with words; how long were you working on that speech.” You sniffle, grinning brightly as you examine the ring, still holding his hand. After a beat too long of silence, you look up to see him smiling softly at you.
“A while.” He admits, and something about the way he says it makes your chest ache. The moment passes and he looks down at your joined hands. “That’s fucking hideous.” He whispers, shaking his head at the sight of the ring, and you giggle, preferring to throw your arms around him, kissing him again.
The two of you are the last two to arrive at the formal photo area, with the logo backdrop, and Joe’s grin is confused where he greets you both at the edge of where everyone was in a line getting a group shot.
“What was all the commotion over there?” He asked quietly, and Ben stepped into position easily, slipping an arm around Joe’s shoulders and pulling you in. You were still beaming, you couldn’t help yourself.
“We got engaged.” Ben murmurs to Joe, careful not to draw attention to them, which was immediately counteracted by Joe’s loud ‘What the fuck?!’ “Calm down, man, we didn’t want to take all the focus off of the premiere, you know?”
As soon as the big group shot was taken, you stepped off to the side as the four boys had their photos taken, and you could see Joe murmuring to the others, while Ben just smiled for the cameras and tried not to blush.
Photos were taken with Brian and Roger, of Rami and Lucy, and even some of you and Ben, and when you posed, you both had an arm around each other, and you leaned into him, resting your hand on his chest with your ring on clear display.
There’s congratulations all around as you’re heading into the theatre, but the biggest shock of the night comes in the form of Roger Taylor wrapping you up in a hug while you’re still glowing with pride.
“Before we go in, I want you to know you did an incredible job, dear. You’re a stunning performer and I never had any doubts about you.” As he says it, you can feel Ben give your hand a gentle squeeze. You’re pretty sure you’ve got shock written all over your face. “I’m very proud of you both.” He claps Ben on the shoulder, and Ben thanks him quietly. It looks as though he’s about to head in, but he turns back. “Be good to her, you hear?” He says to Ben sternly, but there’s a glimmer of fondness in his eyes, and Ben rolls his eyes good-naturedly. He’s still holding your hand.
“What was that?” You breathed as soon as Roger had left; you feel like you’ve been doused in cold water, though you can’t help but smile.
“Well I think he definitely approves of you playing Amanda.” Ben moves to wrap an arm around you as the two of you head into the theatre, searching for your seats. “And I think... I think he gave us his blessing?” That sounds more confused than anything else, and you don’t know how to respond one way or the other, apart from softly laughing as you sit down next to Lucy. Part of you, the largest part that had stayed sane and not drunk on this fake engagement, is pretty sure Roger’s going to be the hardest to break it to, when everything’s over; part of you worries that without Ben, you’ll lose his approval, which you didn’t realise you’d been craving until you’d received it. There’s an anxiety that builds in your chest as the lights go down, but Ben’s hand is in yours and you lean your head on his shoulder, and you can ignore that little worry for now.

The Winchesters and The Librarian - Chapter 2
Summary: Two families, two different legacies but one common fate. Y/N Y/L/N, the newest and only Librarian met the Winchesters brothers during one of her quests. None of them knew that it was the beginning of a strange and awkward friendship. And maybe, even more than that.
Pairing: Dean Winchester x Female Reader, Sam Winchester x Female Reader (friendship)
Warnings: None at the moment. Slight mention of violence but nothing graphic. In future chapters, possibly angst, violence, mention of blood, bad language and mayyyyybe smut (not sure about that one, yet)
Words count: 4104 (Oops...I got carried away, sorry)
A/N: So another series! I like slow burn and long stories so I can’t help! I thought it would be fun to write something about those two shows. I loved the Librarian TV show, and the humour in it and I think SPN could mix perfectly.
Anyway! I don’t know how long this series will be or even where it’s going but I had fun writing the first chapter! Hope you’ll like it too and feel free to share your ideas about future chapters.
English is not my native tongue and this is un-betated, so sorry for any grammar mistakes.
Disclamer: I do NOT own Supernatural / The Librarian or any character of the shows which are the CW company properties. This work is for free entertainment only.
A/N: Not my own gif

Chapter 2: The Opal of Samara
“So get this,” Sam announced as he entered the war room, a huge book in his hands.
Dean lifted his eyes from the laptop’s screen and waited for Sam to continue.
“I haven’t found anything on the Internet or in the lore about a Librarian but in the Men of Letters’ archives there are a few notes that mentioned them.”
“Them?” Dean asked as he took a sip of his coffee, then made a face because the black liquid was cold. He stood up and went to the kitchen, his little brother following him.
“Yeah. Looks like a secret society, just like the Men of Letters. The notes say that both sides helped each other a few times. It was always about artifacts like the Book of Salomon or-or-” Sam turned the page as he kept on reading, a chuckle escaping his lips as he read the name of the next artefact “or King Arthur’s Sword!”
Dean poured himself another cup of coffee, then nodded in contentment as it was hot enough to his liking.
“So you mean, Buffy is a sort of Indiana Jones or Sydney Fox?”
One of Sam’s brow raised up slightly, not believing in what his big brother just admitted.
“What? Tia Carrera was hot. Don’t look at me like that.” Dean shrugged and kept on drinking his coffee.
Sam cleared his throat as he closed the book.
“Anyway, I think she might come handy in the future. I don’t know what kind of artefacts she’s collecting but a few of them could be useful.” Sam told his brother who didn’t seem on the same page as him.
“Useful for what? Come one, Sam! The kid doesn’t even know how to fight back.” Dean reminded his brother as he remembered how defenseless you’ve been in front of the vampires. “We’ve been hunting without those stupid things and we did great. We don’t need them or her.”
Sam bit the inside of his cheek, preventing him to speak too quickly. If they did great in the past, it was only in Dean’s eyes, everything they had to fight until now was because of mistakes they’ve done in the past. As the silence between them settled longer, and longer, Dean knew that Sam was thinking hard about it. He really didn’t know why his little brother seemed suddenly interested in those Librarians and their crap.
“Don’t tell me,” Dean’s lips curled into a knowing smirk. “You got a crush on her, don’t you?”
Sam sighed heavily and looked at the ceiling. “No Dean!”
“It’s okay Sammy, I understand, she was kind of cute.”
Dean smiled as he thought about the way your nose crunched up when he called you Buffy. Or how you kept on pushing that strand of hair that constantly fell in front of your eyes. Or any little odd but cute habits he could witness during that short encounter.
It was Sam’s turn to smirk when he saw Dean’s face as he was lost in his thoughts.
“Whose got a crush, now?” He muttered softly.
“What did you say?” Dean asked, blinking once and focusing on his little brother once again.
Luckily for Sam, their conversation had been interrupted by Dean’s phone ringtone. The older brother pulled out the device from his jeans’ back pocket and checked the caller ID.
“Hi Garth, what’s up buddy?”
As Dean put the speakers on, Sam came closer, greeting Garth as well before the friendly hunter told them the reasons behind his call.
Garth explained that him and a few other hunters were working on a case involving demons. There were already six victims so far and nothing to link back the murders together, the causes of death being different on each case. The only clue Garth had was traces of sulfur was found on each death’s scene.
“You’re already working on it and you have backup. Why do you need our help? Just kill that son of a bitch.” Dean told his friend, his brows furrowed as he didn’t understand why Garth asked for their help, he knew that his friend was very capable of handling a few demons.
“That’s the problem, Dean. We can’t kill them or even trap them for the matter. Truth is, we’re already too late when we reach the crime scenes. I don’t know how to end this.” By hearing Garth’s tone, the brothers knew he was desperate.
They shared a look, silently talking to each other. One of the good things working with your brother was that sometimes you didn’t need actual words to understand what the other one was thinking. With a firm nod from Sam, Dean told Garth that they were in. Garth gave them all the information they needed and thanked them one last time before ending the call.
A few days later in Portland, Oregon.
You were fully focused on the paper you were writing, lifting your head slightly to thank the waitress as she brought you your third strawberry frappuccino. You loved your job as a Librarian, but you enjoyed your day off as well. It consisted of doing researches and more archeologic stuffs mostly but what can you say? You loved history and magic stuff. It wasn’t a coincidence that the Library choose you, after all. You were born for this.
You took a sip before you grabbed the plate next to you. It was time to take a break and enjoy their famous pie. Best pecan pie in Oregon!
As your lips wrapped around your fork, you glanced up once you heard the waitress apologizing to a customer.
“Sorry sir, we just sold our last piece.”
You saw her finger pointing in your direction when the customer whined.
“Wou’ve gob kigging be.” You said with your mouth full of the pastry, a few crumbles falling from your mouth as you stared at the two customers in question.
The two men surely had the same look than you, not expecting to see you ever again and certainly not in such a common place out of nowhere.
“Buffy?” Dean said before his eyes fell on the half-eaten slice of pie.
“Stop-” You pressed your hand against your mouth as another piece of pie flew from your mouth. You swallowed what you had in your mouth before taking off you glasses and put them next to your plate.
“My name is Y/N.” You hissed angrily as both men came closer.
“It’s nice to see you again, Y/N.” Sam smiled genuinely at you. You smiled back at him, then your gaze stopped on Dean, he was looking at you from head to toe. “What?” you asked as you looked at yourself, maybe you had spilled something on your clothes?
“You look…different.” Dean trailed off as he took in your attire. You were wearing a large grey hoodie and a pair of black leggings. Your hair was curled into a messy bun. Something casual and comfortable for a lazy day off full of paper work.
You shrugged. “This is my everyday look. I’m not always wearing jeans and leather.”
Dean smirked at that and was going to tell you that it looked good on you, but his little brother had to speak first. “What are you doing here?”
“I live here.” You answered him, the frown you had on your face disappearing as soon as you focused on Sam again. The man was nicer than his brother, in your opinion. “You?”
“We’re…” Sam started to explain but fall silent, not sure if it was wise to tell you why they were here. You being here as they worked on a strange case couldn’t be a coincidence, right? The fact that they had to hunt a few invincible demons in the exact same town you were living in, Sam was sure something fishy was going on.
“Let me guess. Another vampires’ nest?” You whispered, your eyes glancing back and forth as you make sure nobody could hear you.
“There’s so much more than just vampires.” Dean said.
“Dude!” Sam hissed as he hit his big brother’s top of head.
“What? She already knows about the supernatural.” Dean argued as he brought a hand on the spot his brother hit.
You watched the brothers bickering for a short moment, your eyes jumping from one to another. They were really weird.
“Okay…” You trailed off, gathering your stuff and focusing on your researches again. If you ignored them maybe they would leave you alone.
Sam cleared his throat, hoping that would grab your attention but you just kept on reading.
“What are you working on?” He asked you.
“Some thesis about Ancient Egypt stuff.” You answered mindlessly, you knew he was only asking to be polite, there was no way they would be truly interested in it. The guys were only muscles and no brains, for sure.
“Which dynasty?” Sam asked, the curiosity evident in his voice. “Middle or New Kingdom?”
That grabbed your attention, and both brothers could see the glint in your eyes when you started to speak about it.
“Ptolemaic.” You answered and Sam nodded.
“Before or after Alexander’s death?” Dean asked, earning a baffled look from you and his brother.
“What? I read.” Dean defended himself.
You were going to explain what your thesis was about when your phone rang and stopped you. You lifted your index finger at them as you pulled out your phone and sighed when you saw who was calling you.
“Jenkins!” You tried to sound friendly, but it sounded fake even in your ears. You were silent for a few minutes, listening to whatever he was saying, and your shoulders dropped slightly. “But this is my day off…” you whined but Jenkins wasn’t having it. You sighed loudly and rolled your eyes. “Fine. I’ll be there in a few.” You pouted before ending the call.
You dropped your head on the table, your face buried in your book as you let out a frustrated groan.
“Something’s wrong?” Sam asked.
You glanced up, then straightened as you started to collect your belongings. “Work’s calling me. Have fun killing whatever you’re here for.” You said, grabbing your bag and heading for the exit.
Dean’s eyes fell on the half-eaten pie, ready to pick it when you came back and took it from the table, glaring at him. As you exited the coffee shop you missed the angry look he threw at you.
As if having your only day off shortened wasn’t enough, you had to attend some stupid posh party. It wasn’t like you didn’t like champagne and caviar, but you hated wearing a dress and heels. You felt better in sneakers and leggings but as a Librarian and a representative of The Metropolitan Public Library, you had to look decent in those public parties. Truth is that Jenkins finally spotted where the Opal of Samara was and thanks to your shitty luck it has to be in the possession of some Senator. The only way of coming closer to the artefact was being invited to his house.
Senator Garnet’s wife was throwing a party for her husband upcoming campaign. Rich people and celebrities were invited, a few of them for expected generous donations, while the others, like you, were only here for the press and the Senator’s public image.
You forced a laugh as you heard Garnet’s younger son’s unfunny joke, you were only pretending to have a good time. This idiot was full of shit and so full of himself, you couldn’t stand it. After his third attempt to put his hand on your lower back, you excused yourself, forcing a polite smile, as you stepped back and headed for the bar, showing the little group you were talking to, your empty glass. You needed something stronger than champagne.
You sat on a stool and waved at the bartender, ordering a martini. While you waited for your drink you tried to remind yourself that it was just one night, it would be almost over, and you just needed to wait for the right moment to sneak into Senator Garnet’s private office. This was your only chance to put your hands on the precious artefact.
You thanked the bartender and took your drink, taking a small sip. Ah! Just what you needed, you thought, as you closed your eyes and savored the burning sensation going down your throat. Turning around, you crossed your legs and watched the room. This wasn’t your world at all. You would rather enjoy a walking into Amazonia’s forest than being here. You shifted on your seat, the black dress being uncomfortable, and your feet were killing you.
Half an hour had passed, and the half the invited had left already, the Senator and his wife being busy talking to the remaining people. Now was your chance!
You put your empty drink on the bar counter behind you, leaving a twenty to the bartender and walking towards the corridor. For once you were lucky, the private office was next to the bathroom, so it was easy to make it look like you were going for it. You entered the bathroom and closed the door behind you, then waited for a few minutes before opening the door slightly and checked into the corridor which was empty. Soundlessly you walked towards the office and checked once again that nobody was around. As your hand wrapped around the doorknob you felt an arm wrapped around your waist while another was pressed against your mouth, muffling your surprised scream as you were pulled backward and forced into a dark closet.
You squirmed and tried to free yourself from the hold and froze when you recognized the attacker’s voice.
“What are you doing here?” You heard the whisper.
“D-Dean?”
“Shh!” He said as his face appeared in front of you, thanks to his flashlight.
“What are YOU doing here?” You asked back, your voice still loud.
“Would you shut up?” He hissed, angrily.
“YOU shut up.” Was your weak comeback, you punched his chest and tried to get out from the closet, but Dean grabbed you again and tried to shush you as footsteps could be heard from the other side of the door.
One could expect that rich people would need big closets but the one you were hiding in was really small, barely big enough for two people to stand inside. As you waited for whoever it was on the other side to leave, you started to feel uncomfortable, your back pressed against Dean’s front. Your feet were hurting like hell and you shifted a bit, pressing harder against Dean. Your eyes widen when you felt something hard against your ass.
“Please be another flashlight. Please be another flashlight.” You repeated like a mantra as you closed your eyes tightly.
“Oh come on, this is my gun!” Dean grunted once he realized what you were talking about.
Thanks God you weren’t facing him or else he could see how flustered you were at the misunderstanding. Both of you were silent for a short moment, until you heard Sam’s voice coming from the other side.
You opened the door and came face to face with Sam.
“Dean? Y/N? What are you-” Sam started to ask but Dean cut him short and pushed him, then you into the private office.
Once the three of you were finally inside, you kicked off the pair of high heels angrily and turned around, glaring at both brothers.
“Why are you here?” You and Dean asked at the same time, then you frowned at each other.
“Listen, Y/N, you should stay here. This is more dangerous than the last time.” Sam told you, stepping and standing between his brother and you.
“We’re talking about demons here.” Dean added, his hands balled into fists, his eyes boring into you.
When he mentioned demons, you paled, your eyes widened as you remembered why you were here in the first place. You looked around, trying to find where Senator Garnet’s has hidden the Opal of Samara.
“If you’re hunting demons then it means he had used it already.” You thought out loud, your eyes darting back and forth.
“Using what?” Sam asked as he watched you searching within the room.
“The Opal of Samara.” You tapped lightly on the walls, looking for any hidden place. “It’s an artifact recovered by the Teutonic knights from Jerusalem during the Third Crusade. It was stolen by the Nazi occult division and stored in Berlin until it disappeared at the end of World War Two.”
“Nazi, I hate that time. By the way, did you know that I killed Hitler?” Dean said out of the blue, a stupid proud grin on his face.
You stopped your investigation, looking back at him, then glanced at Sam who sighed deeply. He couldn’t be serious, could he?
“Anyway,” You crossed the room and headed for the other side, removing books from the bookshelf. “It seems like this artifact has the power to summon demons, so you understand why I really need to find it as soon as possible.”
“Does it make the demons invincible?” Sam asked as he helped you searching.
“I don’t think so. We don’t know a lot, just that once summoned the demon can’t be controlled.”
“Awesome.” Dean muttered as he opened and closed every drawer from the desk.
“Come on, come on! It should be here!” You pressed a hand on your forehead as you tried to think where that damn thing could be.
“May I help you?” The three of you turned around, looking at the newcomer: Garnet’s youngest son.
“You’re looking for this, right?” The young man smirked as he pulled out the Opal of Samara from his inner pocket, the boys pulling out their guns and pointing them at him. You glanced at the weapons, not sure what they were going to do. They wouldn’t dare kill him, right? Even if he was a stupid, spoiled brad, he didn’t deserve to be killed. You were against violence.
“Your toys won’t be of any help with this.” He said as the Opal started to glow.
Okay you were against violence, especially when it was directed towards you.
“Don’t!” You yelled as the artifact glowed more and more.
A black shadow appeared on the wall in front of you, moving so fast that you couldn’t follow its path.
“Daeva!” Sam shouted.
Soon the shadow stopped on the wall behind the three of you and smoked appeared, a demon starting to form in the middle of it.
“Not a daeva.” Dean said, licking his lips as he kept his eyes focused on the creature.
The brothers were here for the demons, while you were here to take care of the artifact. The door of the office closed in bang, trapping you and the brothers and Garnet’s son with the demon. As you started to walk towards him, you felt yourself thrown back against the wall, your head banging at the impact. Without having the time to realize what happened, you felt your body lifting and sliding up against the wall, the air escaping your lungs slowly.
“Y/N!” Your eyes looked in Dean’s direction, but you couldn’t say anything as you started to suffocate.
“Exorcizamus te, omnis immundus spiritus, omnis satanica potestas, omnis incursio infernalis adversarii, omnis legio- this is not working!” Sam started to say the Latin words, but the demon didn’t seem affected at all. On the contrary it only resulted in making him angrier and soon Sam encountered the same fate than yours.
Worried for his little brother, Dean pulled out a pointy blade from his coat and threw it at the demon. The body turned into smoke before the weapon could hit it, the blade planting itself into the wall.
“Damnit!”
Sam and you fell on the ground, coughing and gasping for air. If Dean missed the creature, at least it freed you and Sam from his invisible hold.
“The op-opal.” You told Dean, breathless.
Dean nodded and looked at the son of a bitch that was holding the artifact. The sudden attention on him made him realized that his plan wasn’t working as great at he thought. Before he had the time to leave the room, you heard the shot and saw the idiot letting go of the Opal and grabbing his left leg.
He made the worst mistake of his miserable life.
According to the legends, the Opal of Samara was used to summon demons that can’t be controlled but the owner of the artifact was protected of the creature’s wrath.
As long as he holds it.
You saw the smoke whirling around Garnet’s son, his screams of terror ringing in your ears. Still laying on the ground, you closed your eyes and covered your ears, not wanting to witness such a tragic death. You shuddered when you felt something warm and sticky hit your face, then everything became quiet again.
You cracked an eye open and saw what remained of Garnet’s son’s body, and next to it the smoke forming into a body once again. You had to act quickly before it killed one of you. You stood up and walked towards the Opal that rested in front of the door but suddenly you fell on the ground, a heavy weight pushing you hard on the carpeted floor.
By the sound of it, it seemed like Sam and Dean had the same treatment. You glanced back and looked at them as they groaned and tried to stand up.
“Y/N!” Sam warned you and you just had the time to turn your face and saw the demon turning into a bundle of smoke again. Seems like you were the next one.
You heard a click, then another shot rang loudly into your ears. The Opal of Samara breaking into several tiny pieces as the smoke evaporated into thin air.
Despite the fact that there was no more weight crushing your body you remained on the floor, only turning onto your back and stared at the ceiling for a long minute as you tried to calm your heartbeat.
Once you collected your thoughts, reality hit you hard and you swatted away Dean’s helping hand before standing up by yourself.
“What have you done?!” You yelled at him, pushing him hard as you walked towards the broken artifact.
“Saved our asses. You’re welcome by the way.” Dean answered you, the surprise visible on his face at your outburst.
You knelt in front of the Opal and gathered all the pieces into your hands. “Jenkins will kill me. I was supposed to bring it safely. You’ve destroyed a priceless artifact, Dean!” You told him as you saw his feet stopped next to you.
“I think our lives are more important than this cursed object.”
You stood up in a quick motion, the anger boiling into your veins and you lifted your head so you could look at him, your body separated by a few inches only. Both of you glared at the other, both side thinking they were the one who was right.
“Guys, I think we should leave.” Sam said calmly but both of you refused to be the first one to look away.
Sam rolled his eyes and groaned, having enough of your stubbornness.
“Now!” He ordered, pushing slightly his brother and grabbing your wrist, pulling you with him.
Sam offered you to drive you back to your home. It was the least they could do after ruining your plans for tonight. However, instead of going back to your apartment you asked him to bring you at the Annex. You knew Jenkins was waiting for you and you feared the worst.
“She’s not coming with us!” Dean argued as he walked towards his car.
“You broke my artifact. I climb in your car!” You argued back, stomping behind him.
“Would you stop it already? What’s wrong with you?” Sam sighed heavily.
“He’s a brainless idiot who’s so full of himself!” You shouted.
“She’s a whining bitch!” He yelled louder.
“Stop it! Climb in the car. Now!” Sam ordered, knowing that you both wanted to have the last word. As none of you seemed to move, Sam’s voice grew louder as he climbed into the passenger’s side of the car. “I swear that if you don’t climb in right now, I’m leaving both of you!”
Dean grumbled and walked away, heading for the driver seat.
“What did you say?” You asked as you started to follow him.
“Get in, before I change my mind, Buffy.”
“Stop calling me Buffy!” You screeched as you opened the backseat door.
