Madge was hatched in a commercial egg factory and spent the first 18 months of her life in a cage with five other chickens, basically serving as an egg machine. Her beak was mutilated by a hot blade at two days old and her baby brothers and "imperfect" sisters thrown alive into the grinder upon hatching. She was bred specifically to lay 270+ eggs a year, and it wreaked absolute havoc on her body. At 18 months she was set to be gassed to death, as her egg production had slowed down, but instead was liberated by @_animalplace and brought to love at Blackberry Creek. She finally saw sunshine, felt grass, and was able to do normal chicken things like spread her wings, dustbathe, and make friends. She lived with us for two more years and finally succumbed to egg peritonitis early this morning. Her body exhausted, she was no longer to form shells of the eggs her body continued to produce. Please go vegan for Madge and the millions upon millions of animals like her who suffer producing products that humans could easily replace with plant-based options. Rest In Peace, sweet girl. Because the board is overseen by the federal government, egg companies are not allowed to lie with those funds. 🥚 This means that egg corporations (by law) cannot advertise eggs as healthy or nutritious, says the USDA. Graphic image warming, but important info about eggs and the ugly truth behind them. There’s so much to learn, but we’ll give your a quick rundown: 1.) This is Starlight. She was rescued several years ago from an egg factory in California (she is fine and recovering at the present moment). 2.) Chickens do not naturally lay lots of eggs. Humans have done this to them. Just like all birds, female chickens only used to lay eggs to have babies a couple of times a year. Humans have selectively bred certain species (such as white leghorns) to lay upwards of 270 eggs a year. This is INSANE. Think what it would do to a woman to go through childbirth 270 times in a year. Their bodies would deteriorate. This is exactly what Starlight is going through. 3.) Because of the massive stress this puts on their bodies, hens are usually kept in factories or on farms for an average of 18 months. Then they are considered “spent” and killed, usually gassed to death and sometimes buried alive. In certain cases they are locked up and left to starve to death. 4.) Cage free, free range, organic...these are just terms to make you feel better about the suffering you are paying for. These hens still have painful medical issues, are still killed at a tiny fraction of their lifespan (which would normally be 8-10 years), and are still treated like objects. Even worse, to keep them “organic,” farmers cannot use any medication when they get sick or injured. 5.) Starlight has a common problem with ex-factory hens of chronic diarrhea. What you are seeing here is fly strike. Flies laid eggs in the soiled feathers where she lays eggs/has diarrhea (same orifice for chickens), maggots hatched, and then proceeded to eat her from the outside in. We noticed and saved her, but this happens ALL THE TIME with chickens in the industry. For your eggs. The eggs in your breakfast burrito, your cake, your omelette, bread, and rolls. Please stop eating eggs. There is no kind option for chickens other than abstaining and luckily, there are lots of other wonderful options for cooking and baking.
