Madge was hatched in a commercial egg factory and spent the first 18 months of her life in a cage with five other chickens, basically serving as an egg machine. Her beak was mutilated by a hot blade at two days old and her baby brothers and "imperfect" sisters thrown alive into the grinder upon hatching. She was bred specifically to lay 270+ eggs a year, and it wreaked absolute havoc on her body. At 18 months she was set to be gassed to death, as her egg production had slowed down, but instead was liberated by @_animalplace and brought to love at Blackberry Creek. She finally saw sunshine, felt grass, and was able to do normal chicken things like spread her wings, dustbathe, and make friends. She lived with us for two more years and finally succumbed to egg peritonitis early this morning. Her body exhausted, she was no longer to form shells of the eggs her body continued to produce. Please go vegan for Madge and the millions upon millions of animals like her who suffer producing products that humans could easily replace with plant-based options. Rest In Peace, sweet girl. Because the board is overseen by the federal government, egg companies are not allowed to lie with those funds. 🥚 This means that egg corporations (by law) cannot advertise eggs as healthy or nutritious, says the USDA. Will is teaching our recently rescued hens how to perch at nighttime, and his lessons are adorable.
