Stitches and Sentences Roundup 2024

Thanks for the tags on your writing round ups @run-for-chamo-miles, @drowninginships, and @emeryhall! I just got back from a weeklong trip and instead of doing laundry, I'm joining in on the roundup fun.

FIC I moved from lurker to active fandom participant this year with a bang. I posted my first fic ever for EGF and have basically been writing or posting non-stop since then. I wrote/co-wrote 5 fics this year and clocked in at 101, 725 words.

Kill Em With Kindness - rated T, 6.5k, Watford-Era, getting together fic

When no one seems to care that Baz is sad, Simon steps in to help. The only reasonable explanation for all Simon's kindness is that he's trying to kill Baz, right? (My most popular fic as measured by kudos.)

Knock Your Socks Off - rated T, 4k, Watford-Era, 7th year fic

Baz steals Simon's socks. Simon blames the sock monster. Chaos ensues.

The Eternal Life of Baz Pitch - rated M, 42k, Addie LaRue AU, a truly epic romance

Told in two alternating timelines that span from 1700s Hampshire all the way to early 2000's Washington, DC, this fic follows Baz as he spends centuries searching for the love of all his lives. (This was the fic that convinced me I could write long and holds a very special place in my heart. Is it angsty? Yes. Is it some of the most beautiful prose I've ever written? Also yes.)

The Boy Next Door - rated M, 47k, and they were neighbors AU, a coming of age romance

When Simon moves in with his gran, he decides to befriend the mysterious boy next door. He changes both their lives in the process. (My most popular fic by literally every other measure.)

The Reason for The Season - rated T, 1.6k, text fic, co-written with @thewholelemon

Dev and Niall make a list. Holiday hijinks abound. (A bday gift for @mooncello)

ART I do not currently have a great way to track my dolls and searched my Instagram to do the math, only to realize I hadn't posted every doll I made either! (If anyone has a good art tracking system, I'm open to ideas.) If my count is correct, I clocked in at a grand total of 35 dolls this year, including:

The picture below shows my earliest dolls, where I was still experimenting with style and form. As you can see, many of them are quite flat. (Fun fact: All of these dolls--including their clothing--were made before I owned a sewing machine.)

Going 3D was actually an accident, but we have the Watford Baz and Simon below to thank for it! After committing to 3D dolls, I kept evolving my pattern---improving joints, proportions, and adding details like ears!---until we reached my most current iterations.

Now every doll has their own special pattern that takes into account their canon proportions, where available. Notice Baz is tall and slender where Simon is extra fluffy!

I did not include any of the dolls I created for COC 2024 since I assume everyone has seen them already, but I linked the master post in case you missed a day.

Finally, in addition to dolls, I also created 2 plushies (a merwolf and a bunbaz) plus 12 finger puppets this year.

It's hard to quantify dolls like fics, especially since almost every doll before COC did not have a dedicated tumblr post. However, here are some fun art stats:

Hi!! Thank you sm for the ask!! I'm gonna switch the numbers up a bit because I've answered a few you've listed but still wanna answer more.

(Here is the ask game for those who want to see it)

1.) What episode got you invested in the show? Why?

I already answered this one here so I'll exchange this with 3.

3.) Favorite episode? Why? Ramble as much as you'd like.

My favorite episode most definitely for nostaligic and sentimental reasons would be Enchanting Grom Fright, and I KNOW like there are a TON of other episodes but I cannot deny the fact that EGF really does hold a special place in my heart for being (as I answered in question 1.) the reason I even got into TOH in the first place back in 2020. The entire course of this hyperfixation is BECAUSE of that episode. I love it sm because it literally was the spark of the fandom's outrage over shipping Lumity. Everyone was racing to draw and commit every art medium to fandom space. Ao3 was such a different place back then too for TOH fanfic. I think after EGF came out a lot of things really came to be TOH. Of course then we had WIng It Like Witches (which that's an entire discussion in itself!!) that made us all freak out even more about Lumity. I don't know haha. EGF really holds a special place in my heart that I love more than s2. WHICH- Don't even get me wrong. I absolutely love LOVE LOVE s2. We got the Lumity kiss and all that fun cannon stuff- It's just that nothing to me compares to the absolute sheer ferality I had over them because of that episode. TOH really had a chokehold on me because of that.

7.) Has the show ever made you cry? What scene(s)?

I already answered this one too here :( (its so funny yall asked like almost the same thing whoops.)

I'll do 6 because 4 is super obvious lol.

6.) A character you didn't expect to love? What made you start liking them?

Honestly, I'm gonna give a hot take here but Willow. In the beginning back during s1 I didn't feel like she was all that cool. (I didn't HATE her- I just didn't see the appeal of her) Of course Understanding Willow definitely had an impact but it wasn't until s2 when we really got to see into her more that I started to really think she wasn't half bad. Like s1 was mostly not as plot driven so it kinda felt that she was mid. Was indifferent but I'm so glad the show changed my mind about her because she truly was one of the best characters.

9.) If the show had a full three seasons, whats something you genuinely think would happen? Not a wishful thinking, what do you think is something that would've happened?

Well Beach Episode got hinted at so obviously I would be down for that, but I think most importantly seeing more interactions between the hexsquad. I would've wanted to see a picnic lumity cemetery date obviously, and maybe even the hexsquad going to a convention together. I just would want more shenanigans with them all.

Also more Raeda?? Like I would be down for that. And Steve!! And Lilith!! Lilith and Hooty moments.

I think we would've gotten more clarification on the whole curse and the inner lore of it, because I know KNOW theres more to it there. More lore with Hooty and what even that worm was too. I just know there would've been more lore if we had more time.

Anita Wardells Tribute to Betty Carter for the EGF London Jazz Festival 2022 (PRESS RELEASE)

Our winner of two BBC Jazz awards and a British Jazz Award has made a comeback from teaching in Adelaide to put the audience at the 606 club in awe with her stunning celebration of one of the most influential jazz musicians, Betty Carter. Anita Wardell’s performance featured classics from Carter’s repertoire as a tribute and expression of the gambling nature of Carter’s renowned style that fully welcomed vocalese and improvisation to a striking degree.

For the EGF London Jazz Festival 2022, Anita Wardell’s ambition to showcase ‘…how spontaneous and ‘in the moment’ she was…’, willfully embraces Carter’s dangerously dramatic dynamic shifts and exciting emotional improvisation, skillfully and elegantly the night of her performance. The audience were left astonished; majority being vocalists, watching in amazement of the Wardell’s freedom opening in front of them. Her confidence in her ability gave The Arts Desk a place to say, ‘she has the skills and the jazz chops to do it'. The display of agility and precision mix with emotional intent by Wardell gave the 606 club an intensely intimate experience.

Costarring with Wardell were her returning collaborators pianist Robin Aspland, bassist Jeremy Brown and drummer Steve Brown, taking part of in improvising in the lively scene as fellow musicians alike. Wardell’s scat singing (vocalising without the use of lyrics) was welcomed by the band and gave ground to the performance and a drive of commitment and entertainment that Carter had dedicated her own performances to. Betty Carter being involved the works of Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie, her experimental style paved the way for artists like Wardell. Sebastian Scotney accounts that for those who impose a dislike to this style of singing she has talent that can change anyone’s mind easily with her modern sound and interpretations.

Wardell, born in the UK but raised in Australia attended Adelaide University and continued her musical studies at Guildhall School of Music in London. The Evening Standard deemed her ‘the most creative jazz singer in London’ with her currents albums and appearances in a documentary on Ella Fitzgerald for Ovation Television. Her appearance at the 606 club was welcomed, being happy to have her back in the scene after spending four years working at Adelaide University once more as a teacher. The expectation of her comeback leads to many to hope that she is here to stay once again.

In future, the jazz scene are hoping to catch Anita Wardell opening an act with her newest album Stars, an album with Dave McEvoy and features another tribute to late British jazz vocalist, Tina May.

WIP Wednesday

It's Wednesday somewhere, so I am posting early! Because what are rules? But also, I have real WIPS to share and both of them are so stinkin' cute and you really need to have them in your life. However, you do need to be caught up on two different fics to enjoy, so I've put everything below the cut.

SENTENCES I have been celebrating my friend-aversary with Jenny all week by posting the fluffiest story of all time. It's what she deserves, and honestly, what the boys deserve too.

STITCHES Since COC Day 20: Teeth, I have been obsessed with The Tooth Fairy. As always, the best dolls have the most distinct looks, so when Chapter 2 posted, I reached out to Amy to start plotting this absolute masterpiece.

Thanks for 1000 followers. I feel like it was only 3 months ago when I had 43 followers (it was), and it blows my mind that so many of you care about what I have to say.

So, to celebrate that and Amity’s red face: here’s a comic! I drafted it before the Grom episode came out, so it’s not entirely accurate. I also tried a new coloring strategy. Let me know what you think!
