EFOTD: Do you have any fun, intriguing, interesting, or useful anecdotes you can share as an Etsy seller? E.g. any interactions with buyers on Etsy that have taught you anything, any interactions that have been especially enjoyable or unique?

GYPSYBRAND: I've had a lot of people request candles in an "unnatural scent" (scents that don't come from essential oils) like sugar cookie — featured first here. I started implementing a few "unnatural scents" in my candles, but I still choose organic materials as much as possible.

well i’m all for the all-natural essential oil-based scents, but i’m not gonna say no to a good sugar cookie-esque candle … or one that smells like freaking MAPLE BACON SIZZLE. i am loving the fun, multicolored sprinkles on the first one, and the artificial bacon bits adorning the second. nom indeed. and DON’T FORGET to enter the etsyfindoftheday + gypsybrand giveaway, only on EFOTD on instagram. megan will send the winner one of her citrus glow sugar scrubs -- enter now through sunday, good luck!

i got the pleasure of learning about sarah’s etsy shop, spithappensco, via email — she is good friends with one of my chicago-based coworkers. i just LOVE making these etsyfind connections!! :) anyway, not only are her hand-sewn baby items adorable, they raise money for an incredible organization that is especially close to her family’s heart. read more right from sarah here:

Just a little bit about me - I have two little ones 3 years old and 18 months that keep me busy, I stay at home with them now (in fact one is currently “helping" me type) and before the nuggets came along I worked at an amazing bakery. Now that I am at home I really wanted a small business of my own. I have always been crafty, but a few years ago my mother-in-law taught me to sew and I picked it up very quickly and now here I am :) Initially my site was just going to be for a little bit of play $$ but recently I have paired up with a non-profit and for every item purchased on my site I donate an item to an organization called Jack's Basket. Our oldest was a surprise at birth diagnosis of Down syndrome and Jack's Basket is an amazing organization that ships baskets all over the world to new parents of babies with Down syndrome to help them celebrate their new blessing. The woman who started it lives here locally so we've gotten to know her and I figured that this was a great way to give back to our amazing little community :) Anyways, you can read more about it here if you'd like!

>>Do you have any fun or favorite Etsy seller interactions you'd like to share with EFOTD's readers?

Well, I am one of five members of Our Maker Life or OML for short. We're such an awesome team of makers. Collectively it's the entire maker community, but Jewell, Kathleen, Kelly, Alison, and I are the team behind the movement. Our goal is to simply bring makers together for real life interactions. You know, take us off the internet and network with real people who share that creative mind. It's mostly knitters and crocheters, but we're not limited to that. We're actually coming up on our second maker meetup in Canada. We had one last year in New York. It turned out really well. Being able to meet so many makers you look up to on Instagram in person was pretty cool. We were able to educate each other, network, socialize, and travel. Think of yourself having one vacation a year with people that share a common interest, knitting! All of that couldn't have been done without an ever growing relationship with We Are Knitters. They're our sponsors and we couldn't have gone with a better one, to be honest. We recently teamed up with We Are Knitters to make a tutorial on how to knit a sweater with Skill Share. We're currently looking into working on another project too. You'll have to wait and see what we have in store for that one. As an individual maker, I was asked to be a part of a collaboration by Amy, from @NobleCharacterCrafts, for an afghan blanket put together by many makers. Each maker has submitted a 7" inch square with their own unique design that will make up one afghan blanket. I was also reached out to by a pretty respectable magazine and fashion movement. Unrelated to knitting in particular, but that didn't stop me from wanting to be a part of it. I'm hoping I can negotiate something with them as I have their media kit. It's a bit out of my budget, but I think it can be really interesting if all goes well.

>>So awesome, Nathan. I can’t wait to hear how that pans out! On another note, have you ever experienced any difficulties as a small business owner and Etsy seller? What tips would you give other makers starting out a business creating what they love?

Wouldn't it be a perfect life if there were no hiccups? But then how would we learn and appreciate the hard work of not seeing how far you've come? There have been many difficulties I have faced as an Etsy seller. One of the toughest things was finding my own identity. Standing out and not blending in. Asking myself how do I do that without doing what everyone else does. I think being a guy in a mostly female dominated field helps seeing things differently. There is only one way to be unique. that's simply being yourself. No one can do you better than you can do you. Being consciously aware of the details of other makers, like, seeing what works and then applying it to how it will work for you. Not copying, but making it your own. Starting out will be a trial and error. Think about why you're doing it. Once you know why then you'll have a sense of purpose. That purpose will forever fuel the reason to why you create. Think quality over quantity. I can't stress this enough. Forget about the numbers. Anyone can count. Quality is much deeper. You can't count that. It'll take you a long way. Never slave for another's satisfaction. This may sound selfish but do for yourself. Don't do it for Instagram, Facebook, or any platform. Just use that to share your work and passion. You work for you and your needs. Don't get stuck in that box and become limited. If you can't satisfy others by satisfying yourself in the process, then who are you working for? Also, never make what you don't enjoy making. If you as the maker aren't satisfied, then what does it matter that others are?

EFOTD is on instagram!

hi guys!! big news over here … etsyfindoftheday is now on INSTAGRAM! super stoked to find all you etsy shops and sellers on there. if you want to add me, search for @etsyfindoftheday :) i’m still trying to figure out the format of what i’m going to post there each day, but i’m leaning towards NOT simply replicating the finds i post on the blog; instead, i think i’ll feature my favorite pic or two from the blog daily, and post more real-life, physical etsyfinds as well. but feel free to write me and let me know what you’d like to see, send me suggestions, comment on my pics (when i start posting them … sheesh), and tell me what you think. you guys make EFOTD so much better, and i can’t thank you enough for all your feedback! now … head on over to instagram and find EFOTD!
