edwin became a tiefling after the 'ardor sacrifice' incident at st. hilarion's.
charles rowland, a student from his class, had saved his life - pulling him from the flames of sacrifice, beating a couple of the other boys down with his bat along the way.
a week later, the boys on charles' team tried to kill him by stoning him in the lake. edwin found him afterwards and brought him to the school attic to warm him up and tend to his wounds.
this was the first time charles truly saw edwin's new form - the night of the incident, edwin had run away so fast, and he'd been wearing a cloak to school ever since. they didn't share any classes, and while he'd heard about the 'boy with horns,' he didn't see what they'd meant.
"don't matter one bit to me, mate."
the boys escaped st hilarion's. they were no longer welcome - a human-turned-tiefling "mary ann" and the stupid human that saved such an "abomination" were not welcome. besides, charles had only made it into such a prestigious school with a sports scholarship, anyways, and his leg was horribly injured in the lake incident.
ten years later, the boys are 26, and they're solving cases together as the "dead boy detectives." (edwin said he had "died" that night in the basement, and charles only started living when they ran away from the school).
edwin stares at himself in the mirror. his skin is a 'hideous' shade of blue, the whites of his eyes were now black, the runes from the sacrifice had been burned into his face, and one of his horns had been broken during a case. he called himself an abomination.
charles had his own flaws. there was a scar over his lip from one of the rocks thrown at him, his lips were tinted blue - something edwin could never heal away from the hypothermia - but that was 'it,' he supposed.
edwin never forgave himself for what happened to charles. the scar, the lips - they were reminders that, because of edwin, charles had his life ruined.
but charles didn't see it that way.
one night, he held edwin, running his fingers over his horns, kissing the burn scar across his face (his cold lips could soothe the burn, he told him jokingly), and reminded him how beautiful he was. how 'blue was his color,' how the 'runes in his skin were badass,' or how 'the black makes his emerald eyes glow.'
to charles, nothing else was more true - edwin payne was beautiful, tiefling or not.

Some thoughts for a Dead Boy Detective D&D AU:
Edwin: He would absolutely be a School of Necromancy wizard. Everything about him screams wizard, and I think him being a necromancer who uses his abilities for good would be pretty in-character for him. In fact, we could even go one step further and say that he's a Reborn (who are essentially the D&D version of Frankenstein's Monster, and they are insanely cool and fun from a roleplay stance alone). Maybe he got brought back to life after some time in Hell, maybe he was able to bring himself back... there's a lot of possibilities there.
Charles: Oath of the Watchers paladin, hands-down. I know, most people tend to peg him as a fighter, but hear me out---first off, he canonically fights with a magical weapon, and you know it would be cool as hell for him to cast Smite with his cricket bat. Second off, his whole deal as a Dead Boy Detective feels very Oath-of-the-Watchers coded, since they're all about guarding the material world from extraplanar forces. And third... he's a punk. Paladins are punks. Also, he's gotta be an elf. Probably a wood elf instead of a high elf, but elf is non-negotiable when you're putting Charles I-Have-Cute-Pointed-Ears Rowland in a fantasy setting.
Crystal: Aberrant Mind sorcerer, kalshatar. Because, well... *gestures to her everything* yeah. Also, Crystal deserves to go full-on eldritch entity.
Niko: I personally think that she'd be an amazing College of Creation bard---and this might just be because that's my favorite subclass for my favorite class, and she's my favorite character, but she feels very bard to me, and College of Creation is all about seeing the beauty in the world, appreciating life, and making the most out of any situation, which fits our girl well. Also, I think that Niko would probably be the group's token human, which fits nicely with her being the only non-magical member of the Dead Boy Detectives in canon.
Monty: Circle of Stars druid, kenku. Theoretically, a kenku who could actually converse with people instead of just repeating what he hears, but... astrology crow. What do you want me to say.
Jenny: She was tricky, but I eventually decided that she'd be your classic tiefling rogue---specifically, a Soulknife rogue, with maybe a level or two of fighter thrown in there for good measure. Jenny gives off the vibes of a slightly older adventurer who's kind of grown cynical about the whole thing, but she's still tagging along with a younger, more starry-eyed crew because somebody needs to keep them alive.
Esther: Now, while the temptation to make her a Green Hag is very, very strong, I think that might be doing her a little bit too dirty. So, instead, she's a Circle of Spores druid and a Great Old One warlock, and while she is a regular human, she's done a lot of messed-up stuff to keep herself alive and young. I figured that Circle of Spores fits with her necromancy shtick (and also, y'know, Teeth Face), and GOOlock fits with her deal with Lilith.
The Cat King: Trickster Domain cleric, tabaxi. No-brainer, really.
The Night Nurse: Her whole deal strikes me as very Protector aasimar-coded, if not straight-up Celestial-coded. Also, she fits the criteria for a Grave Domain cleric to a T.
#tragic mick doesn't really fit into any one category if i'm being honest#and to categorize kashi i would have to know what his deal is#dead boy detectives#edwin payne#charles rowland#crystal palace#niko sasaki#monty finch#jenny green#esther finch#the cat king#the night nurse

Day 2 - DBDA Week
Day 2 of Dead Boy Detectives Appreciation Week: 10th-16th June by @dbdcentral
Prompt: Alternate Universe
Relationships: Edwin Payne/Charles Rowland
Tags: Alternative Universe - Magic, Star-crossed lovers
TW: None
--
Charles would always remember the day Edwin had to leave for the Academy. They had always known it would come, he wasn’t sure if they had been pretending not to, or if they just never realised completely what it meant. Edwin had kissed him with lips wet and salty from his tears, and Charles had watched until the car disappeared completely beyond his sight.
He felt empty, purposeless. His mind kept going back to all those happy moments they had shared growing up, first playing together in the woods, then the first time they held hands, the first shy kisses. The memories seemed more real than his present life.
He couldn’t deny that he had thought about following him to the city, but Wizards were rare, and precious to the society, and they weren’t allowed to mix with ordinary people like himself.
He moved his fingers to his wrist, to trace the shape of the bracelet Edwin had given him before he left. The feeling grounded him. He said the rune on the pendant would change colour when Edwin thought of him, it was pulsing a warm green now.
-
Six years after the dreadful day when he said goodbye to Charles, the memories of him still haunted Edwin every moment of every day. He wondered what the other boy looked like, if he had grown taller than him, if he still had that blinding smile that made the sun look pale in comparison. It had been torture to be separated for so long. Even now that he was finally about to graduate, he still wasn’t free. His path had been written for him long before he was even born, like every other child of one of the wizarding families, he was supposed to take its place among the Wizard’s High Council who protected the country.
He knew he should just give up hope to ever see Charles again since they were destined for different places. Surely, Charles would have become a Fighter by now, and an amazing one at that. But he held onto hope that one day, they could find a way back to each other.
He concentrated all his powers on the bracelet he had given him that day, hoping that the incantation was strong enough to still be working.
-
The city buzzed with excitement, the annual parade celebrating the country’s independence had brought everyone out in the streets. There were flags waving, music, food stalls and happiness all around him, but Charles didn’t spare a second look at any of those. He had only one goal. He pursed his lips, his gaze determined, focused on the tall building of the Academy, standing majestically at the other side of the square.
He knew he would find Edwin there, ever since he arrived, his bracelet had been pulsing a deep red, the strongest colour he had seen in it yet. It was the thing that made him certain that his feelings were still reciprocated, that Edwin expected him.
Hiding among the crowd, he made his way closer to the entrance. He just had to wait for the fireworks to start, so that the guards would be distracted.
The moment he saw the first burst of lights and colours from the corner of his eye, he slipped inside, trying to remain in the shadows. He ran through the corridors, in the direction of the rooftop, where he knew all the students gathered every year to watch the show.
When he peered inside, he found his favourite emerald eyes already fixed on the door. So many years, and their minds still worked in perfect harmony, understanding each other without the need for words.
He saw Edwin excuse himself and move towards the door, Charles felt like his heart was about to explode in his chest.
“I was hoping you would come,” Edwin whispered in his ear. It made a shiver run down his spine.
He thought about replying, there were at least a thousand things he wanted to say, to ask, but there were more pressing matters. He all but launched himself at him, hugging him close, his lips rushing to Edwin’s like a drowning man resurfacing and finding the first breath of air. The kiss didn’t taste like salt this time, it tasted like desperation, and need, and in one moment it managed to make six years look like a snap of fingers.
Edwin guided him by the hand along the corridor to a room, and locked the door behind him. Finally safe from prying eyes, they dared to look at each other more thoroughly. Edwin was even more beautiful than he remembered him, his shoulders had broadened, his eyes were shining with happiness and he wanted nothing more than to kiss his smile again.
“I was afraid you wouldn’t come,” Edwin said, breathless. “I kept looking at the door but I thought that maybe you had moved on, or you forgot about me.”
Charles shook his head in disbelief. “I thought about nothing else since the day you left.”
He entwined their fingers together, leaning his head on Edwin’s shoulder. They would have to separate again soon, or people would start looking for them, but at least they had this one day they could steal for themselves. And Charles would never give up hope.

okay so, most of my characters are for DnD 5e cause I play that the most, but I've got a couple for other systems that I really love.
My oldest DnD character is a halfling called Milo Oakwood, I played him in my first campaign but it ended early so I revamped him for another one. Originally he was an arcane trickster rogue, but now he's a multiclassed rogue bard (one level in rogue, three in bard, he's college of eloquence). I love him so much, he's a coward who hates violence and loves lying, he pretended to be a wizard for the first ten sessions of the second campaign. he's also a werewolf but very much still in the denial stage about that
My second oldest dnd character is a tabaxi fighter/rogue musketeer fella, I actually play him in two campaigns now - originally a horror campaign where he's level 11 and in his forties, an experienced adventurer who gets marooned on a creepy island while on his way home to his husband, and now a werewolf/town of salem/among us style game where he's level 6, late twenties, and has only just left his job as a town guard. he's called Charles Edwin Cooper in the first one and Storm at Dusk in the second (went for a more traditional tabaxi name in the second to fit the setting better). they're both absolutely going through it rn
The only dnd character I've played in person is an elf fighter/rogue (guess my favourite classes lmao), she's called Elion Bravechild and he's my babygirl <3, the cutest violent ex-bandit you'll ever see, having a bad time suffering various problems in pursuit of a powerful evil cult as the only non-spellcaster in the party lol
I have a few dnd characters for play by post games: Eaza, a dragonborn paladin way out of their depth rn; Ash, a shifter barbarian who's coping with screwing up her life by going to space to bite aliens (spelljammer campaign); and Stronsay, a reborn druid who's a strange corpse that washed up on the beach one day, got up, and hasn't particularly cared about anything since
kind of my favourite character at the moment is Caitríona, she's a monster of the week monstrous I played in a mini-campaign. She was a shapeshifting monster (selkie) working as a camp counsellor on a remote island, she took no shit from anyone and wrestled a bunch of monster while trying to be nice and also hide her secret, and eventually got sent back in time lmao
I've also just started a second fallout ttrpg campaign, my character is a himbo farmboy called Elliot, I'm excited to see where his character goes
sorry this post is really long I just love infodumping about my characters (could have made it way longer ngl)
hey hey! tell me about your ttrpg characters! it would be fun, i think, to hear about them if youre okay with that
:O ty for the ask! it'll be kind of a long answer cause I have lots lmao so I'll reblog this & answer it on my ttrpg blog rn
