Just rewatched the d&d movie and was reminded how angry it made some people, specifically how Edgin was "emasculated" by not being the strongest member of the party, showing parental care, always reaching out to others, and constantly apologising as a means of reconsiliation.
The bad takes are out there for you to find, but I bring them up now specifically because there's been a recent tend among chuds doubling down on a desire to return (or retvrn if they're extra fashy) to "taditional" or "stoic" masculenity and claiming that any media that potreys men outside a position of unquestioned power is "degredation".
It's that classic rightwing cocktail of insecurity and media illiteracy, completely unable to find value in a character who isn't a paper thin power fantasy they can project onto. What's hilarious is that all the stuff they hate about Edgin are things that would make a normal person like him: He's an underdog, he's a flawed but loving dad, he's an inspiring person, and he's a good leader! The chuds see these as unmanly traits, but what they mean is that these are traits they sorely lack and have thus excluded from their concept of what makes a man "manly". When you're a selfish, offputting asshole who's affraid of being wrong, you want to hold up selfish, offputting assholes as the pinacle of what people like you should be.

It's exactly what an actual DnD party would do.

okay hear me out:
touchy-feely Edgin who's so used to bumping shoulders and sharing bed pallets and cupping the faces of his loved ones because even with the grief and guilt he carries he's also always overflowing with love and affection and physical touch is just a part of the way he communicates with those around him and he's so unabashed and casual about it, as if it's second nature to him
COMBINED WITH
touch-starved Xenk who lives such a noble but lonely life and is seen as such a paragon of goodwill and virtue to the point that he always gets puts on a pedestal and with his serious nature people just tend to find him too intimidating to get close to and tend to give him a wide berth or keep him at a distance even though he craves physical touch and will reach his hand out to others when given the opportunity, probably because he grew up in a physically affectionate family and hasn't had it since his family was taken by the Beckoning Death
like please, I see the way Xenk is so open to receiving physical touch to the point he even readily offers it himself but no one returns it in kind and thinking about how long he's been alive yet obviously spends most of his time on his own just breaks my heart a little, he is in dire need of Edgin smooches and hugs.

Took me weeks to finish, but I finally have my new desktop picture <3
The second version is @wyrm-mlm ‘s fault because he requested a Disney Castle crack version XD
Do not repost, use for AI art, or do anything else with this that would give you an Evil alliance

spoilers: Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves
Saw a post on here about how remarkable it is that in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Edgin chooses platonic love over romantic love at the end. And I gotta say, that's not quite what's happening there.
Earlier, when he was finally honest with Kira (Sofina), he acknowledges "I was trying to bring my wife back. I wasn't trying to bring your mother back."
And then later he reunites with the real Kira. And she forgives him. And he goes through the character transformation to become a real hero.
And that point is when he is faced with a pretty classic choice. Does he repeat his mistake or does he move forward as a better person? Does he bring back his wife, which is what caused his separation from Kira in the first place? Or does he bring back Kira's mother (who is really, for all intents and purposes, Holga)?
He chooses the selfless act of bringing back the person Kira cares about.
My point is that his choice wasn't between romantic love and platonic love. His choice was between romantic love and parental love.
That said, it is still remarkable that Edgin and Holga have not a whiff of romance between them. It is very uncommon to see a platonic different-gender couple raising a child together in a movie, for sure. And very uncommon for a male character and female character to be depicted as being so close and so familial with each other without them being in a romantic relationship (or related).
But also extremely remarkable how they emphasized Holga's relationship with Kira as being more important than Zia's. And extremely remarkable that Holga's depicted as a stoic barbarian and simultaneously as a mother, without one part of her diminishing the other.
