Face many fears

Eddie Izzard’s admission that she is a licensed pilot startled Saturday Kitchen anchor Donal Skehan. The announcement of Izzard’s talent outside of acting and humor left the cook and presenter perplexed. Izzard revealed that after overcoming the intense dread of coming out as transgender several years ago, she has learned to face many fears. Flying was one of those things.

Still excited to be seeing Suzy Eddie Izzard this week, even if the election put a damper on general excitement. She's a bucket list comic for me, @norma-jean-monster and I bonded over her Dressed To Kill HBO special years ago.

What’s old may just be new again

Eddie Izzard’s Remix Tour swept through the Broward Center this evening to an exhuberant audience. Izzard’s 35 years as a stand-up proved to be an all-out celebration of the comedian’s greatest bits/hits. Globally renowned as an accomplished theater, film and television star, Izzard’s stand-up specials are standouts in the world of media entertainment. Izzard’s gender identity, (she identifies as a trans woman) will be referred to as such for this review. Also involved in various causes across the globe, she has run in the political arena to get elected as a Labour MP in the United Kingdom.

On this night, it is Izzard’s wit on display. The classic material is the main attraction for the ‘REMIX’ tour. However, it is not a recycled repertoire heard before.  Izzard has updated a bit. Her storytelling on full display, there are tweaks, extended improvisation, and boundless energy. Frequently walking across the stage, speaking in a two-person narrative. No two shows are the same.  As dyslectic, Izzard has never written down her routines. With that in mind, there were no pauses or lack of direction.  

The two-and-a-half show brings together routines dating back to her iconic shows. The current political climate is not lost in the mix, as Izzard weaves comments in-and-out during the evening. Noah’s Arc, with the voice of James Mason as God from Glorious (1997), The Assassination of Julius Caesar, Force Majeure  (2013), and the subsequent invention of caesar salad. Of course, the infamous, Death or Cake?, Dressed to Kill (1999) and encore, Darth Vadar making an appearance in the Death Star’s canteen (Circle 2000), were the crème-de-a-crème of the performance.

Izzard’s intellect, charm, wit, and persona is as endearing as it was 35 years ago. Yes, we’re all a bit older. However, time will never change funny.  Eddie is proof of that.
