illicit affairs
buddie | E | chapter 1 of 8(ish) | 3k | just a boy helping his boy bestie figure out gay sex, with a side of infidelity This is how it starts: Buck goes on a date with Tommy. How it goes from there, Eddie can't even begin to explain.
Chapter 1: born from just one single glance
It’s in the aftermath, when Bobby and Athena are safe and being checked over and the 118 plus family and friends is piled in the waiting room as usual — they all have their preferred chairs with how often they’re here — that Eddie’s unfocused mild interest in this new guy who his friends trust, turns to sharp notice.
Eddie has to step away to call Carla, to let her know they got Athena and Bobby, to assure her that he’s fine, Buck’s fine, they’re all fine. And then he spares an extra moment to text Marisol because he knows she’ll see the news soon, if she hasn’t already, and will worry.
After, when he returns to the waiting room, Tommy’s in his seat. Eddie doesn’t really have a specific one he favors so much as he always takes one next to Buck. So, it follows that, Tommy is now sitting beside Buck.
When Eddie left, Buck’d been pale-faced, and shaky in a way he wasn’t when Bobby was missing and he had a goal to focus on. Eddie hadn’t wanted to leave him, but it was Buck who’d said didn’t he need to call Carla? Let Chris know they’re okay?
Eddie pauses across the room and regards the scene before him. Tommy is leaned in, chatting to Buck, making wide, expressive gestures with his hands as he does. Buck’s still more grey than pink in the cheeks and one hand is clutching the arm of his chair, but he’s stopped picking at the patch of peeling paint he’s about tripled in size over their past handful of waiting room residences and there’s a hint of a smile curling the side of his mouth, which had been a grim line before, waiting for the doctor to report back on Bobby and Athena, waiting to be allowed to see them.
“He’s in good hands.”
Eddie starts at Hen’s words. She appears from behind him carrying two paper cups of what Eddie understands from experience is the worst coffee known to man. He used to force it down because caffeine is caffeine, but he can’t anymore. It reminds him too much of the three minutes and seventeen seconds that were some of the worst of his life.

it’s amazing how our brains choose to remember the good things about the people we love when they die. everything gets viewed through rose colored glasses until it becomes distorted. for eddie, falling in love with shannon was magic and while things became difficult the love was always true. their problems were on him not shannon. he wasn’t enough, he screwed up, he should’ve, he could’ve. he’s rewriting history to place her on a pedestal because she’s yet another person he’s outlived. someone who deserves to be here when maybe he doesn’t. (there’s also the fact that he wants to remember her this way for christopher’s sake. to erase her flaws and her humanity in favor of making her the hero of the story.) and now he’s choosing to live in the delusion of a second chance. but he will end up disappointed because kim can’t live up to the ideal. shannon can’t live up to the ideal. that’s the part of grief eddie needs to reckon with....

i'm sorry i'll never shut the fuck up about how BIZARRELY 911 handled buck and ali i've never seen a show approach a relationship like that before?????????? like, she shows up in 2x08 as buck's surprise date when he's trying to put himself back out there again and hey, that's great!! she seems nice and they got along during the earthquake!!! but then we hear nothing again until 2b where buck makes exactly one (1) reference to her in a conversation with maddie in 2x11, saying she's around but that she travels a lot for work, and then it's CRICKETS for another 6 episodes. like absolutely nothing. nada, zip, zilch, her name does not leave anyone's mouth until suddenly. suddenly. she reappears in 2x18 and is..........helping buck find an apartment??????? that she wants a lot of say in because apparently their relationship is that serious???????? and then she's at the hospital when buck wakes up from surgery and maddie and carla are joking that buck doesn't even realise they're in the room bc she's there and it's just like excuse me this woman is a sTRANGER???????????? the first time i watched i literally forgot he was supposed to be in a relationship. i paused in the middle of the loft scene and went to check if i'd somehow accidentally skipped an ep like???????? what was the point!!!!!!!! was it just so she could break up with him at the end of the ep????? because almost dying and having his leg amputated wasn't trauma enough????? unhinged behaviour on the writers' part honestly

Buck hanging out with the Diazes and Tommy hugs him from behind and Buck just melts and then he’s smiling and saying “uh Marisol this is Tommy, my boyfriend.” And THATS how we get Buck saying boyfriend for the first time.

I wish you guys could understand how much it sucks that this season really does seem to give the POSSIBILITY of something ACTUALLY shifting in terms of Buddie, but Kr*sten did so much damage and had me so pissed and scarred from the Season 6 finale that I spent this whole goddamn hiatus conditioning myself to stop getting my hopes up.

seen some ppl speculate that the lighting in the episode could be different than the lighting in the stills and all I’ll say is that if that’s true then they probably need to hire new lighting crew and rip whoever colour graded this episode.
yeah shooting day for night is a thing but why you would deliberately set up such a shot to have bright white beams of sunlight softly pouring through the windows is beyond me.
the only way I can see that happening is if they filmed everything and then went “shit, actually these scenes need to happen at night”, or if they shot the bts stills whilst they were rehearsing and for some reason the lighting was set up from a previous scene.

"Didn't know you could bring a date to a bachelor party" except it's because clipboard Buck kept strongly implying that there was a very strict guest list because he didn't want to see Marisol. Me 🤝 Buck.

i’m quite literally begging
canonbuddie stans to leave the fandom. please make good on your promises before season 7 gets here. i’d love to go in the bathena tag and not have to sift through junk. bathena’s sole purpose isn’t to be some parallel to buddie nor is their sole purpose to be pseudo parents to buck (and by extension eddie).
the only people who did the queerbaiting were those splicing together buddie and eddie scenes and attributing their own interpretations in an infinite number of posts to the point where people who didn’t watch 911 assumed the two were a romantic couple on the show. both characters have explicitly dated and shown interest in dating women on the show. the dialogue often had emotions and feelings that shows usually don’t show two men having (which i loved so much bc need to not use women as emotional support and find that in their own friendship) but it never skewed to either showing romantic interest in one another. the writers never teased anything in interviews, as far as i know. the actors never teased anything in interviews either, as far as i know. was a romance possible and believable? yes, of course. but that doesn’t mean it’s the only option. and it’s been clear that that wasn’t a story the writers were interested in writing no matter how loud or demanding a small group on the internet got.

had a thought this morning that Eddie could’ve broken up with Marisol in 7x05 and his 7b storyline would’ve still been the exact same 💀

My prediction is that the affair with Kim will help Eddie move on from Shannon so he is ready to take another step with Marisol, but Marisol finds out he has cheated on her and breaks up with him. And Eddie feels isolated because he doesn't feel like he can seek comfort from others for not liking the consequences of his own actions. More him getting in his own way than him getting iced out. Maybe couple this with Buck moving in with Tommy because now Eddie can't just stop by like he used to, plus the jealousy that Buck is able to progress in his relationship when Eddie can't in his.

In all honesty, this has been racking my brain more than it should ever since 7x05.
But...did Chris have ANY idea that Marisol was moving in?
Like, do you expect me to believe that he was completely fine with Eddie moving in his girlfriend after dating each other for TWO WHOLE MONTHS?! He didn't have any objections or reservations? He was all, "Really? Marisol's moving in. Cool, see you in a week."
And what if he didn't know Marisol was moving in? Was he just supposed to come home from his trip thinking everything is chill only to see that Marisol is completely moved in? Was Eddie just gonna fill him in after the fact? Was Eddie really fine with risking Chris calling an Uber and heading to Buck's once he found out what was going on and he broke a table?
And you mean to tell me Buck had no concerns about it?
Literally NOTHING made sense.

the way oliver and tim talk about this season is so funny. you’re telling me oliver just decided he was going to be bisexual this season and tim wasn’t thinking about it until he needed to bring in someone else bc arielle was unavailable for the air rescue so he called up lou and said hey do you want to come back on the show. also im gonna make one of those bitches gay i think what do you think about that? and lou was like hell yeah brother and then tim was like oh shit but eddie’s with what’s her name (marisol) so he can’t be gay yet. and then oliver walked by tim’s office a few times holding a bi pride flag and tim said oh shit. buck can be bi. lou do you want to make out with oliver and lou said no. i will kiss him tenderly and sweetly though. and tim said. we can work with that.

7x10 coda. beware the spoilers
Three months pass, and Eddie still isn’t used to it. It’s too quiet at home, and too awful at work, and he still grabs two bowls every morning even though he’s the only one eating.
He thinks about quitting, again. Leaving behind Captain Asshole and following Christopher to Texas. He knows he can’t. He’d promised. Eddie clenches his fists and forces himself to finish buttoning his uniform.
He sends Christopher a text, the same one he sends every morning, then shuts his phone in his locker.
“Line up in five,” Gerrard bellows from the loft. “If you’re late, you’ll be scrubbing the rig with a toothbrush, no exceptions.”
Eddie stands mechanically and walks over to the bay.
Another day, another goddamn reason to bury himself in blankets and hide until the world ends.
Buck invites him over for dinner most nights, or offers to go home with him. Eddie says no more than he says yes, but Buck… Buck’s always known Eddie better than he knows himself. He doesn’t stop asking.
“C’mon Eddie, it’ll be fun—you, me and Tommy, we can come up with ways to drive Gerrard insane.”
Buck looks at him, soft and imploring, an expression Eddie rarely knows how to refuse. But despite everything that’s happened, Buck’s managed to carve out a small sliver of happiness, and Eddie doesn’t want to drag him down.
“You go ahead,” he says. “I’m picking up half a shift at  the 136 tomorrow. Need to get some sleep.”
It’s true and it’s not. He is picking up the shift, but he doubts he’ll sleep.
He goes back to therapy, but he never knows what to say. It was all—everything was in his head, last time. It’s not, now. It’s all real, and it all hurts, and no amount of talking about it makes it hurt any less. He says as much to Frank.
“Then why are you here?” Frank asks.
Eddie looks away. “I don’t know,” he says.
That’s not quite true either.
Kim calls him, and Marisol doesn’t. She leaves voicemail after voicemail, apologizing for that night. Eddie can never bring himself to answer the phone. Eventually, he blocks her number.
He texts his own apology to Marisol, but it never goes through. It’s probably for the best—he doubts the message would’ve made either of them feel better.
Eddie needs—he doesn’t know. Before, he would’ve said time. Now though, he’s got all the time in the world, and he’s desperate to get rid of it.
Buck calls. Eddie can’t answer him, either. He lets it ring out, then listens to the voicemail.
“Hey Eds, it’s me. I uh—just wanted to check in. It’s been a couple days. Call me when you can.”
Eddie tells himself he will, but he has no idea when that’ll be.
Christopher doesn’t text him, but he does text Buck.
Eddie never asks what he says, and Buck usually doesn’t offer to tell him.
“Just—he’s okay, right?”
Buck smiles, a little bit sad, and leans into Eddie’s space. “He’s okay,” he says. “He misses you, even if he’s not ready to tell you that.”
Tears streak down Eddie’s face before he even realizes he’s crying. Buck wipes one away and pulls him against his chest.
“What if he never comes home,” Eddie whispers into the soft material of Buck’s sweater.
“He will,” Buck replies. “He will.”
Good morning, Eddie texts on the one hundred and second day since Christopher left. I love you, and I hope you have a good day.
He drops his phone on the table and tries not to hope for a response. A second later, though, it dings. Eddie’s heart leaps into his throat as he scrambles to open the message.
Morning, Dad.
