I went to the show last night with my good friend and former employee, Jessie... we had unbelievable seats in the front center! I was so honored to be invited to make a rock poster for The Black Keys and as a Colorado native it is an honor to make that poster for their first ever performance at Red Rocks. The image is my interpretation of the tour's name, “Dropout Boogie”. This project was so much fun! The name and spirit of the tour offered an opportunity for me to incorporate some of my favorite things to draw…skeletons, old fashioned motorcycles, and wild abandon! The style of art was inspired by one of my favorite artists, Jose Guadalupe Posada… I looked at my books of his work, looked at old motorcycles and came up with this image… all while listening to the new record… it was a real treat. Nathaniel Rateliff made a brief appearance for a quick song. I used to hang out with him on South Broadway from time to time before he was a mega star. This was filmed at the Bentonia Blues Festival last year, it’s the story of me meeting Jimmy - aka the day my life changed. No shit y’all.

The ever eclectic & always prolific SONNY SMITH is back under his solo guise and armed with a brand new single titled “BURNIN’ UP.”

Not only has the Sonny (of the Sunsets) returned, but he’s brought along the richly talented Angel Olsen with him on his latest road-dog ready jaunt, as “Burnin’ Up” is draped in vintage threads with a splash of Smith’s modern panache. Over deliciously thick bass lines, piano stabs, and six string strums, Sonny saddles up alongside Olsen to create an audio/visual hegemony.

Angel Olsen is on a wining streak when it comes to partnering up, and lending her unique gifts, with weathered troubadours (see her duet with Hamilton Leithauser for example), as the song benefits tremendously from her presence. 

There’s nothing flash about the proceedings, it’s just two focused and confident songwriters doing what they do, along with starring in a modern I’m On Fire fever-dream of a video treatment (and I’m sorry to be the cis-male monster, but it’s always nice to lay my gaze upon the delightful Miss Olsen).....
