Dragon Breath:

General Abilities:

• Dream keeps all of his usual abilities

- General positive aura and empathy

- Teleportation

- Healing, though it take a lot of energy

- Summoning minor bone attacks

- He can still change his staff into blades/a bow, along with summoning arrows, but it’s pretty much impossible to utilize as a dragon (hard to hold anything with paws) so he doesn’t ever do it

• Though he cannot fly, he has very long, light, and graceful leaps that can almost simulate such, if done right

• The glow effect of his mouth, eyes, and ecto makes for a great nightlight/flashlight in dark spaces

• With a little training, he’s able to utilize his claws and fangs in a battle, as well as his tail in a whip or tentacle like fashion

- Alongside that, his lengthy body and tail makes it easier to peacefully restrain enemies in a fight

Hoard:

For longer than Dream really would admit, he’s felt drawn towards comfort items like blankets, pillows, and plushies. The very first of his hoard was the cape that Nightmare fashioned for him long before the Apple Incident. That gift, given to him during a thunderstorm and while he was struggling with his self worth and fatigue (both caused by the villagers), meant the absolute world to him. It was comforting, meaningful, and showed that someone cared about him, so his instincts latched onto it.

During their time pre-corruption, Dream was unable to properly hoard anything. He either could not afford items he wanted, or people would turn down his requests. He had a few blankets and pillows, all of which were shared with Nightmare at the time, but was otherwise stuck in an uncomfortable funk. After waking up from his stone prison and moving in with Ink, Dream was able to indulge himself far more often, to the point that he thought he actually had a problem. He tried to hide it all in closets, cupboards, and drawers.

After finding out about their dragon instincts, Dream’s far more open about his hoard (even if still a little embarrassed). He’s collected anything from cute pillows at the store, to his friends’ jackets and sweaters. Hiding it all is no longer necessary. Instead, he keeps it in either his room, Nightmare’s, or Killer’s, though some of it does usually end up in others’ bedrooms as well. He finds his hoard is great for cuddling when someone he cares about feels down, and has little shame on dragging anyone to his “nests.”

Extra Info:

• Nightmare is not his biological brother - they had a brother-like relationship, but neither really considered each other as such.

• Dream has taken many items from Error’s stash of blankets and pillows (with permission of course), to the point that Error will occasionally get something specifically for Dream’s hoard, just so he won’t take anything else from his pile.

• A major design change from the original post is the addition of slight fur on Dream’s ecto. It’s hardly noticeable because it’s so short, but it has the softest texture. At times, in cuddle piles, it’s hard to tell the difference between what’s a really soft pillow and what’s Dream’s fur.

- Added onto that, though his tongue is slightly forked, it’s also barbed like a cat’s. It makes it very easy to get dirt out of his fur, but he never uses it for that because he thinks it’s gross. That doesn’t mean that he hasn’t instinctually gone to clean his paws before (or, on occasion, someone else’s face), only to stop immediately and gag at the taste.

• Nightmare tearing his cape was one of the worst pains he had ever felt. He’s forever grateful for the Stars’ help in refashioning it so it wasn’t completely ruined, but he’s still deeply saddened by the fact that it’s much shorter now.

• Though his ecto glows with the positivity around him, it does not typically react to his own feelings. He could stand in a crowd of happy people while feeling absolutely depressed, and still shine like a glow stick. Whether this is a result of repressing his emotions for far too long, or just how his magic works, he isn’t sure.

• He really wants to make a second crown for this form, since his usual circlet does not fit as a dragon. It’s currently still a work in progress, but he does eventually get one.

Lyz : Where are you from and when did you move to NYC?

Vanna Youngstein: I'm from London and moved to New York around 10 years ago — but I go back to London for long periods of time, as I love both cities.

Lyz : When did you start your line? Did you intend to start as a full line or did you just want to create some tees?

VY: I started my line a few years ago. I made the first tee for myself, and when I would wear it, everyone would shout out to me in the street asking about the shirt. I would be styling a shoot and people on set would be asking me where they could buy the tee. I eventually started making them and I put the first one in a music video that I styled — it really took off from there.

Lyz : What is the first shirt you made?

VY: The first t-shirt I made was "Cherry Baby" — the classic one with red flock on a white baby tee. I was really focused on those two words and wanted to start my brand with just one tee. Then I quickly made the baby blue and red version and the baby pink and red version.

Lyz : Your designs are all text based and so perfect for the brand. “Cherry Baby”, “Atomic”, “Tokyo Princess”, “Cara Mia”, “Stellar”..... What do these words mean to you and how did you come up with the aesthetic representation for the tanks?

VY: Thank you! I use mostly text based designs, but I do some cartoons and other images as well. I think about the words I’m going to use for a while before I make them into a tee - It’s something that has to feel right and be true to the feeling created so far. I am constantly researching and going over inspirations, themes and ideas, and then they just gradually come from there. Some phrases stick with me over the years, or I think about what my customers would want to wear at that moment in the year. “Cara Mia” for example is what Gomez calls Morticia in The Addams Family so that always stuck with me. The words/slogans always end up being quite cheeky or romantic or punchy. I try to mix tomboy and feminine together a lot and I like to work with mixing retro and modern techniques together. The Stellar tee has sparkle letters as well as heat press studs. I try to use deadstock tees where possible.

Lyz: What did you study in college and where did you go?

VY: I studied Fashion Design at the University of the Creative Arts.

Lyz : What jobs did you have prior to doing your line full time?

VY: I have always worked in fashion since I was about 16! My first job was working a Saturday job at a cool little shop in Portobello Road in London. Before doing my line, I designed for other large labels in New York and Japan and I am still a stylist.

LYZ : Favorite fairy tales?

VY : Princess and the Pea, Snow White and Rose Red, Rapunzel, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Little Red Riding Hood.

LYZ: You have collaborated with some big hitting brands like X Girl Japan, Agnes B and Opening Ceremony — how does that feel, and is there a dream collab you want to do?

VY : it feels amazing to have collaborated with those brands that I have looked up to since I was really young. It is truly a dream come true to work with them! I have a new, even bigger collection coming out with X-Girl next summer that I am currently working on. My future dream collabs would be Hysteric Glamour, Chanel and Miu Miu.

FH: How did you come about teaching an artist “How to…….” workshop with Fosterpride? What was your lesson plan?

VY : Lyz Olko who is a good friend of mine and who actually founded the “Refashion Workshop” series kindly asked me if I would be interested in teaching a workshop on making tees, and I thought it was a great idea — so we brainstormed together and I decided to do a Puffy Paint workshop. I thought it could be a fun medium to base a class around. It is an easy way of making t-shirts look retro and modern simultaneously. I really was inspired by the work already done by Fosterpride in their workshops. My lesson plan was to start with a brief background on my inspirations and how I go about designing tees. Then I wanted it to be based around everyone experimenting and using different appliqués to enhance their designs.

LYZ : The booklets you made for the class are amazing.

VY : Thank you so much! I really wanted to make a zine-like booklet to go along with the course that had various images that I felt were inspiring and tied everything together. There were pictures of Kelis, Neneh Cherry, The Runaways, and Thora Birch in Ghost World all wearing cult tees mixed with various puffy paint or knitted 80s and 90s sweaters from eBay. I wanted to show memorable images that have inspired me mixed with different techniques and ways of creating a tee. I included a few pages of people wearing my t-shirts, and I had a page for puffy paint tips. The last page was a large blank t-shirt for designing your own tee before you start.

I can’t quite believe it’s nearly October – where did the summer go? And on top of that, where did September go?? That said, I’ve been glorying in the weather here in New York this past month. We’ve still been flirting with temps in the 80s during the hottest parts of the day, but it’s much breezier and less humid, and once the sun goes down the temperature drops quite comfortably into the 60s. Much nicer than the sticky humidity and 90+ degree days and nights of August! (We’re still not quite to my ideal fall temperatures, but soon… soon…)

And with cooler temps come thoughts of fall-appropriate sewing – that is to say, things with sleeves. I didn’t do this consciously, but looking back at the projects I completed this summer, there wasn’t a single sleeve in sight! These arms demand freedom in the heat of a New York City summer, what can I say. Hindsight being 20/20, this actually may be the reason I procrastinated so long on the make I’m ever-so-slowly building up to. Minds are weird and wonderful things, aren’t they?

At the beginning of August, the Instagram sewing community blew up with sewing challenges – the ones I saw the most were #alteritaugust and #BRAugust2019, but there were any number of others. Not sure why August is the hoppin’ sewing month, but it made for a flood of inspiring Instagram pictures so I wasn’t complaining! However, I wasn’t really in the mood to commit to a sustained month-long challenge. The lure of getting in the sandbox to play with my sewing community beckoned, but it wasn’t quite clicking – until I saw someone posting about #sewcialmashup and a little bulb went off in my head. The concept was simply to mash up two (or more!) patterns and share pictures of the result during the month of August, with weekly prize drawings and some big grand prize options at the end of the month, and my mind immediately flashed to a mashup I’ve had brewing since before the new year. What a great opportunity to get my rear in gear, join the fun, but also not overwhelm myself! One project, one month – easy peasy!

(And then I procrastinated for the whole month and only worked on it the literal last three days of August… and then I started writing this blog post the first week of September and only just now got around to finishing it… Shhhhhh… I blame it on the heat. Yeah. Also, big shoutout to Girls in the Garden and Inside the Hem for hosting such a fun challenge!)

Like a lot of sewists, I was entranced this winter by the release of Friday Pattern Company’s Adrienne Blouse. A simple top designed for knits, it majorly brings the drama with sleeves that are literally the largest pattern pieces on the sheet, gathered at shoulder and cuff with 1/2″ elastic, and is a terrifically drafted pattern and easy to sew to boot. The minute I got my grubby little hands on it, I was dreaming of wearing it tucked into high-waisted pants and skirts, which gave me a moment of pause. I don’t like tucking knit tops in – I feel like they often bunch and shift under a fitted waistband, plus I’m very tall with a long torso, which can be trying when it comes to keeping tucked-in shirts in place. The Adrienne is drafted with negative ease through the body, which meant the bunching was unlikely to be an issue, but it is also self-described as “slightly cropped with the hem hitting just below your bellybutton”. How much length was I going to have to add to make this wearable?? (The answer is none – I actually find the length of the torso fairly spot-on for me. Were I looking for a cropped top I’d be disappointed, but as it is I’m pleased as punch!) Then I had a surge of brilliance – I’ve posted here before about my love affair with the Nettie bodysuit from Closet Case Patterns, and one of the things I love most about it is that it provides me with close-fitting knit tops that are un-untuckable. Why couldn’t I just whack the bottom of the Nettie onto the Adrienne, joining the practicality of the bodysuit with the swoony romanticism of the blouse’s sleeves? Both patterns are very simply drafted with similar ease and stretch requirements. Only one thing to do, and that was throw it at the wall and see if it stuck!

Despite the incredibly long incubation time on this idea (I mentioned it for the first time all the way back in January when I was drafting my Pick Nine selections for 2019), once I pulled out the patterns the whole thing came together really quickly! My copy of the Nettie has an inch of length added to the front pattern piece at the lengthen-shorten line (I chose to fold out that extra length from the back piece to try and reduce extra fabric at the small of my back, which has been an issue before), so to make sure I included that I simply lined up the Nettie’s top lengthen-shorten line with the waist notch on the Adrienne. Above that point I traced the Adrienne, below it I traced the waist and hip curve on the Nettie, shifted the pattern pieces a little so the edge lined up with the fold of the fabric, and traced the leg opening with some creative fudging to make up for a little added width through the hips. Same process for the back (while Adrienne uses the same pattern piece front and back, the Nettie has differently shaped pieces to accommodate your crotch and your butt) and I was in business! Since I didn’t change anything about the armscye or neckline of the Adrienne, I could simply use the sleeve and neck binding pattern pieces as drafted, and while the leg opening did end up slightly cattywompus from the original Nettie, Heather very thoughtfully includes in the pattern instructions that the bands (which you self-draft anyway) should be 90% the length of your leg opening, so I just had to do a little measuring.

Cutting it out was simple and mostly notable for how often I had to stop to pet my fabric – I’ve never worked with double-brushed poly before, so I don’t know if it’s all this soft and kitten-like and delicious or if LA Finch Fabrics just has the absolute best DBP in the game. Either way, it’s divine, and I got 1 1/4 yard for a steal of a deal because it was an end-of-bolt piece (so no more for you, sorry, it’s ALL MINE!), which was the perfect amount to cut out my “Adrettie” without any hassle and still have some silky-soft scrappy pieces that I think I can squeeze a panties-and-bralette set out of (#sustainablesewing!!! Use up those scraps!). (Fantine is one of my dream roles, y’all. I dreamed a dreeeeam in time gone byyyyy…)

Okay maybe that’s just me.

I’m slightly less in love with how far down the cut of the leg opening falls in the front – the back coverage is perfect, and one of the reasons I love the drafting of the Nettie so much, but I might go back in and carve out some of the side and front so the band sits more comfortably in the crease between my thigh and my pelvis.

I paired Adrettie with some Old Navy shorteralls, and while I’m liking the effect I’m not a huge fan of the blue-on-blue – I love a good dress-like-a-crayon moment, but I prefer a little more dynamism and contrast between shades. Still, I wore the ensemble out to a friend’s birthday and really enjoyed it, so I think the answer is clear: I need to make more Adretties to wear with my blue denim shorteralls, and I need to make some other shorteralls (and full-length overalls for the colder weather) that I can wear with this blue one! I’ve got a pair of golden-yellow thrifted jeans that I was thinking of refashioning/altering, and while they were intended to become another pair of better-fitting pants, I’m sorely tempted to chop off the legs and use the extra fabric for straps and a bib… we shall see! I also think the sleeves would look darling under a pinafore, especially as the fall weather begins to make layering more of an option again. And then of course there’s the high-waisted pants and skirts I originally envisioned this hack with!

One thing I will be doing, though, is going back and opening the crotch seam to add snaps – all this talk of layering something that I have to take off in its entirety to go to the bathroom is giving me the cold sweats, and the thought of sitting on a toilet shivering as the weather gets colder does not appeal! The mood for this autumn is dress smarter, not harder, y’all.
