I am so used to non-native landscaping plants in the PNW being species native to Europe, Asia, or less commonly Africa or Australia, that it seems even more strange to suddenly see a species I grew up with in Missouri pop up--in this case, eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis). I've seen a few of them in the past couple of months, and in checking iNaturalist maps it seems that Portland is a hotspot for out-of-place redbuds.
They don't seem to be especially aggressive, at least not compared to something like tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima). And people are still going to plant non-native ornamentals for whatever reason. If this one is at least relatively innocuous and is a familiar face for me, I won't worry about it too much. It's just totally not what I would expect to run into here.

Eastern Redbud Tree
Cercis canadensis
This small tree in the legume family showcases lovely pink blooms in spring and is native to much of eastern North America. They grow in a variety of habitats, but prefer well-drained slopes in woods without many other plants to compete with. Its flowers are pollinated by carpenter bees and other bees with long tongues, and the leaves provide food for several caterpillar and moth species. The flowers on this tree are also edible and contain beneficial anthocyanins, a group of antioxidants.

A small study in Eastern Redbud's (Cercis canadensis) blossoming from the bark habit, which, I am sure, leads to it's someplaces' common name of "American Judas Tree"...

Working on sowing more native plants. I have so many seeds I've collected in the fridge; I feel a bit overwhelmed but I'm trying to get one species planted a week. Two weeks ago I planted Rose Mallow Hibiscus and got a high germination rate. In the past I have not. What made a difference was I moist stratified them instead of just sticking the pack of seeds in the fridge. Then last week I sowed some Joe Pye Weed. A few are just starting to come up. Then tonight I scarified Eastern Redbud seeds by boiling them for a minute, and now they're soaking overnight. I'll plant them tomorrow.
