A list of household things which MANY ethnicities seem to think are specific to their culture:
a) a plastic bag stuffed full of other plastic bags
b) cultural/religious knickknacks which your grandparents will scream at you for touching
c) a set of items that are specifically for Company (often the relatives your parents feel the need to impress and/or secretly despise)
d) a very loud woman
e) a butter cookie tin full of sewing supplies
f) mass Tupperware collections and/or ice cream and yogurt containers filled with surprise cold vegetables in the fridge
g) relatives overly involved in the physical appearances, profesional, and reproductive lives of the young women in the family
h) arguing
anyway I think the really interesting cultural identifier is what b) and c) are, because those are a little more specific even if the impulses behind them are not

really disappointing that bunjywunjy had to be pestered twice just to quietly remove their reblog after using their huge platform to encourage garbage like raving about the lesbian estonian soviet flag and how 'new pride flag just dropped' so people could go 'ooh pretty' about a flag that was forced onto us by ppl who wanted our culture gone and oppressed us for about a century in total if not more.
to say nothing or not show anything of the truth about that flag and quietly remove the reblog felt more like it was done out of obligation (and you didn't agree) rather than care for the subject matter that is still a fresh wound in our country's memory. it's only been 33 years since it ended.
I'd rather you make the mistake about something you didn't know (eastern european history is easy for westeners to overlook, because we're not a big country like them, we're not england or france or spain or germany) and admit/apologize for said mistake or even just outright state that you don't actually care rather than say nothing and quietly remove something so that people would stop talking about it

khan al-umdan (caravanserai of the columns) in acre is one of palestine's best-preserved caravanserai, a type of inn historically common across asia, north africa, the caucuses, and southern europe, especially for travelers along trade routes like the silk road. it was built in 1785 on the order of ottoman governer ahmed pasha al-jazaar (who also has a mosque named for him nearby). the clock tower was added in 1906 to celebrate the silver jubilee of sultan abdul hamid II.
khan al-umdan served as more than just an inn - due to its proximity to acre's port, it also served as a spot for merchants to store and sell wares. it also gained importance to the baha'i faith, as it served as a site where baha'ulla (founder of the religion, he was imprisoned in acre later in life) received guests, and held a baha'i school. many palestinians found refuge inside the khan during the nakba, but were later forcibly expelled and evicted up to the 1980s.
it continues to be used for events today, but not as often as it used to be. despite being a popular tourist attraction and designated as a world heritage site, the caravanserai has also been facing further neglect due to gentrification and has also been in danger of being dispossesed for quite some time now.

It's kinda shocking to me how few people seem to know how prevalent the 'my great grandmother was cherokee' myth is and how it's almost never actually true, especially when it comes with things like 'never signed up' or 'fell off the trail' or 'courthouse burned down destorying the documentation' etc etc.
People just don't even seem to know the history like.. when the Trail happened. My great great great grandfather was 2 years old during Removal in 1838, so peoples 'my great grandmother hid in the mountains!' is so clearly wrong. And we have rolls. From before and after removal, rolls done by cherokee nation and others by the government, rolls that were not stored in one random flammable courthouse. It's not difficult to find the actual evidence of ancestry.
And just.. there are lots of ways those family stories get started. It was a practice during the confederacy to claim cherokee ancestry to show one's family had 'deep roots in the south' that they were there before the cherokee were removed. Many people pretended to be cherokee and applied for the Guion-Miller payout just to try to steal money meant for cherokees - 2/3rds of the applicants were denied for having 0 proof of actual cherokee ancestry. [We even see lawyers advertising signing up for the Miller roll just to try to get free money.] And the myth even started in some families in the cherokee land lotteries, where the land stolen from us was raffled off, including the house and everything that was left behind when the cherokees were removed. We have seen people whose families just take these things stolen from the cherokee family and adopt them into their own family story, saying that they were cherokee themselves.
If you had some family story about being cherokee and you wanna have proof one way or the other, check out this Facebook group run by expert cherokee genealogists that do research for free. Just please read the rules fully and respect the researchers. They run thousands of people's ancestries a year and their average is only around 0.7% of lines they run actually end up having true cherokee ancestry.
#and ive heard even dumber origins of the cherokee family myth#such as an ancestor having a silly sounding name so the descendents just go 'oh she mustve been an indian!!!'#i was one of the few people who had my ancestry done on the facebook and had genuine cherokee ancestry#[though i had found it before it was just really validating to get it double checked and i started finding cousins (:]#like. i was told once when i was a kid by my grandma that my dad had cherokee ancestry and i didnt believe her. its wild that so many peopl#will make it a Fixture of their identity [or even just smth they bring up ever] with Zero proof#at least for cherokees from what ive seen its usually considered really disrespectful to claim to have cherokee ancestry without#actually having the documentation [like ancestors on the rolls]#and no a dna test doesnt count. nor does 'my dad is Clearly not white!' or 'high cheekbones' or old family photos or anything#i had this discussion with someone recently whose dad had been calling himself 3/4 native but didnt know exactly what nation ???? hello?#and its like... sorry but ur dad is like. italian lol.#[and blood quantum is bullshit anyway im tired of the 'im 1/16 cherokee' comments its dumb#cherokee nation does not have a blood quantum requirement. its pointless bringing it up in the discussion of who is or isnt cherokee]#also mandatory disclaimer that im reconnecting. i didnt grow up connected to the culture of even knowing my ancestry#this is all from my looking into this stuff over the past year or so. i cant claim to be an authority over anything regarding this#this is p much all my repeating things ive heard said by people who know a lot more than i do haha#man. and this isnt even starting to get into the fake tribe stuff. the only legit cherokee groups are the 3 federally recognized bands#cherokee nation of oklahoma. united keetoowah band. and the eastern band of cherokee indians.#any others that are state recognized or not at all arent acknowledged as legitimate by any of the legit cherokee groups#anyway. my final message goodb.ye#cherokee#tsalagi

Every time I try to do a modern AU I want to change up Padme's background
Her face is EE Jewish, her accent is American, her fashion is Mongolian(-inspired), her name is Indian(-inspired), her house is Italian--
And in a modern setting it's unlikely for all to be true at once so. You gotta pick.
I think I usually go with either Mongolian-Italian or Indian-Italian (racially), religiously and maybe ethnically Jewish? Aaaaaand probably Natalie Portman's own "immigrated to the US very young" background because same, which is then the accent.
Me pointing at Padme: I'm gonna project this one specific thing on her and you can't stop me

Žena u srpskom, Katarina Ivanović. Gallery of Matica Srpska in Novi Sad.
Anka, the younger sister of Princess Persida Karađorđević, born on September 27, 1820 in Hotin, to father Jevrem J. Nenadović, duke from the First Serbian Uprising and mother Jovanka Joka, daughter of duke Mladen Milovanović. In 1831 they settled in Valjevo, where Jevrem was soon appointed as the district chief.
Anka married Milosav Topalović, a merchant from Kragujevac, the son of Petar Topalović, a participant in the Second Uprising. They had three children; Petar, Leposava and Savka. At the time when Katarina Ivanović painted the portrait, Anka was 17 years old, she probably got married that same year. Anka died together with her newborn daughter Savka in 1843 at the age of 23, after a difficult childbirth.

Idea for a royal family dragon shifter AU
The Royal Family can all turn into dragons but they all only d it in specific scenarios
Iroh was an absolute chad among dragons, super swole and graceful. He used to bust it out on battle fields and he was an absolute nightmare. People in the Earth kingdom were telling ghost stories about him for years. Nowadays he never does it because he says it hurts his neck. TBF it does, but it's also because he associates it with his glory days of conquest and death.
Ozai never really pulls it out because he's a loser who never leaves leaves his house. He still does it for ceremonies and to remind people in the Fire Nation who holds the power, but every time he does, there's about a dozen people who all think his dragon form looks...off. He's stouter than a dragon should be, his whiskers are short, he's got these weirdly long and pointy horns. He's just wrong
Zuko is the most majestic among his family. Super long and flowy, big mane and stuff, super pretty. He only pulls it out for two occasions. the first is when he wants to be dramatic. swerving in and out of storm clouds and stuff. Other than that he only really uses it to be a bigger human shield. Bigger body means that if arrows are coming at your friend, you can cover him in you. It's not till after the war that he learns to do it more casually
Azula is the wild card. No one has ever seen her form and literally everyone is grateful for that. She's scary and dangerous enough as is, they don't wanna see how scary she is with a few extra tons of muscle and death. Zuko is the only one who's seen even hints as to what she looks like, a twitch of hidden muscles here, a flash of horrifying eyes. it isn't until the day of the final agni kai that Zuko finally sees what she becomes. There are no whiskers, instead only spikes and horns on every inch of her face. What should have been proud and majestic wings were ragged and big enough to blot out the sun. A long serpentine form warped to be stout and deadly. And what should have been beautiful rainbow flames turned into nothing but the essence of death and destruction. 4 whole generations of greed and destruction taken their toll

How to make pierogi from an actual polish person! (easy)
Tumblr media
I split the recipe into 2-3 days usually but you can do it all at once if you hate yourself or have a lot of time
Makes like 40 or 50 pierogi maybe more maybe less.
(this recipe is confirmed and approved by my polish bubbe)
Day one--make the filling
ingredients:
-potato -----3-4 (depends on how big)
-cheese ------one cup/8 oz
(In Poland you would use twaróg which is farmers cheese but in the US it's often cheddar which is pretty good too)
-One big onion (diced pretty small)
-Salt and pepper
---------------------------------------------
Boil water. Peel, and then cut potatoes into 1/4ths each so they take less time to cook. Cook these for 20-25 or until they're soft and you can stab them with a fork very easily
2. Strain water out. Let them cool until they are easy to touch. While they cool, fry the onions in butter until browned and soft. Then mash the potatoes and all of the ingredients together. Add salt and pepper until it tastes very good
Then just stick it in a container until the next day if you want
Day two--dough
ingredients
-4 cup (ish) of flour
-a bit of salt
-1 cup (ish) of water
-2 eggs
----------------------------------------------------
Put salt and flour in a big bowl and mix
Separately, mix one cup of water and the 2 eggs together.
Add the egg/water mix into the flour and stir until it's mixed.
sprinkle flour on the counter top. place dough down and continue to mix/kneed dough for a minute or 2 or until it becomes smooth and stops sticking to your hands (add flour or water as you need)
If you are waiting a day, cover with flour and damp towel and place in a fridge. if you are finishing today, cover with flour and wrap with a towel and wait 10-15 minutes. then continue.
Making pierogi--day 3
Make sure there's flour on your counter and rolling pin!!
Boil a big thing of water and put some salt in it to stop them from sticking
2. Start with around 1/4 to 1/3 of the dough and roll it out to 1/5 - 1/6 inches think. Take a glass or something else to cut with and cut it into circles. Place a small amount of the filling in and fold it. THIS IS THE HARD PART!
Here are some videos to help with this
fancy way to do it
easier way to do it
3. Plop them in the water. While they boil, roll out another piece of dough and continue those steps
4. In a few minutes they will start to float, take them out.
Repeat until it's all folded and boiled.
You can eat it then or fry it (I recommend to fry)
To fry them
Just cook them in butter until browned the way you like them. I like to cook them with onions, but you don't have to. After this, they should look like my latest batch at the top!
Good luck, smacznego, and b'teavon!
