Jack of the Wood, of the Green, of the Tales, of Many Names.
I wanted to lean a bit into the whole “aura of summer” he has going on occasionally and got a bit self indulgent. All the species depicted (except one) are found within the Appalachian mountain range.

I’ve finished up some of my last few coyotes, I need to get good pics of them soon. But for now, here’s just one of them. She was roadkill.

Would love to hear about the differences between the skull shapes, general locations, and colour palettes of all the coyote subspecies! Only if you would like to of course, as I understand there are a lot.
If there weren't so many I'd do them all but here's two of my favorite subspecies c:
Mearns' coyote (C. l. mearnsi) is a small subspecies located in the southwest (predominantly AZ) and often have this beautiful dark coloration.
Tumblr media
The Northeastern coyote (C. l. thamnos) is a much larger subspecies on average and their skulls have a very unique shape compared to the other subspecies. They're located around the Great Lakes. The average color is the one shown below, but they often come in a red or blonde coloration.
Tumblr media
These subspecies are often confused as hybrids due to their unique skull shapes. Mearns' on the left, the Plains coyote ("average" coyote) in the middle, and Northeastern on the right.

Mearns' are smaller with a more defined stop than the Plains coyote, while the Northeasterns are larger with more "wolf-like" features like wider zygomatics and larger mandibles.

Something kind of like that happened to me. I took in a stray dog that I thought was just a husky mix but she turned out to have a bit of coyote in her.

She likes chairs and couches.
She is very cute, also thank you for introducing me to the concept of a coydog/dogote, which logically makes perfect sense but I'd never really stopped to think about before.

Our coyote with a malformed leg, affectionately named Ashton, is back! I'm very excited because that means he made it through winter! He's definitely a bit thinner than he was (the right picture was in the beginning of November last year) but he's still running around just fine, and even hopping up on rocks and logs!

facebook keeps recommending this page called the "Maine Wolf Coalition" to me and like...it is WILLFUL ignorance that keeps these people calling some of the animals they capture on trail cameras as "possible wolves" or "suspected wolves" or "unknown canines".
like 99% of the animals they post are eastern coyotes to a tee.

eastern coyote information !!
Eastern coyotes or scientifically Canis latrans x Canis lycaon is a species of coyotes native to eastern america. They’re different from the common coyote (Canis latrans), presumably because of interbreeding over time with their DNA being closer to wolves than a typical coyote. Eastern coyotes are a bit larger and heavier as a result of their differing genetic makeup. Their taxonomy is Kingdom: Animalia, Phylum: Chordata, Class: Mammalia, Order: Carnivora, Family: Canidae, Genus: Canis, Species: latrans x lycaon. They live in forested areas and large fields in terms of habitat and can often be heard at night if you live in wooded areas. Depending on the size of prey in the area they live in, coyotes may travel in packs or alone. In places where prey is larger they’re found to live in packs, and have displayed wolf-like behavior but are said to be less social than the latter. Prey like elk and deer being the majority will often result in coyotes forming groups, but things like smaller rodents and mammals will have coyotes be lonesome and hunt and live on their own. A more in-depth look at their prey and general food source shows they consume a vast array of plants and animals. This list includes; snowshoe hares, white tailed deer, american beavers, turkeys, birds, and small rodents in general are the animals it preys on. Plants and fruits are an important source of food for them especially in the summer Eastern Coyotes are presumed to be monogamous, whether they’re bonded for life is debated within the scientific community. Females give birth around May and April and have a gestation period of around 63 days.
