I see there's a bit of a fuss over the TV Guide cover. What do you think? Personally I'd prefer the focus always remain on the show's two mainstays - and let's be clear, that's Sam and Dean, cuz I know someone reading this will go "but Cas" - yet people are trashing Dabb (again/still) and disregarding the awesome stuff we've had these past few seasons. Maybe I'm a philistine, but I've never seen this "terrible, horrible, no good very bad show" folks are on about. Care to enlighten me?

Hiya nonnie!! Yeah, people enjoy bitching evidently. I too want the focus to be on Sam and Dean but Im not offended by the SDCC TV Guide cover, it IS the last season and the only SDCC Alex has been, or will be at and he’s been a big part of the show since s13.

People here have been acting like the bros have never shared ad space with anyone until now, but Cas has infiltrated posters and merc since s8 and Crowley did too since S9, its hard to find any merc between s9 and 12 that didnt have all 4 of them on it.

Theres no reason on God’s green earth to hate on Dabb. He literally killed Destiew, he took the brothers from fighting and trying to leave each other for 11 years to working out their arguments and fighting to keep each other alive! If people want that Kripke relationship that had Dean supporting Sam in being possessed by Satan and throwing himself into Hell for eternity, over Sam refusing to allow Dean to throw himself into the ocean with Michael to save the world, then they can have it. That’s not any deep abiding love Ive ever heard of. Damn I wouldnt let my worst enemy take in Lucifer and throw themselves into Hell, let alone someone Im suppose to love.

Im more than convinced most of these people havent watched a full episode in years. Maybe some turn the TV on, but theyre watching Twitter and Tumblr and not the show apparently. Thinking they get the “important parts” from live bloggers and gif sets. Theyre not.

As for s15, Im confident that its going to be great. Why?? Because TPTB INVITED,,, let me say that louder for whiners in the back INVITED J2 (not Dmitri and Alex) to come out and give their input. If they werent interested in what they want, and interested in giving it to them, they wouldnt have INVITED them out.

Am I bitter? Yes, yes I am... these assholes bullied J2 into wrapping it up because they dont know how to change the fucking channel! Now, those of us who love these guys, only have 20 more episodes and thats all. The writers these entitled little shits complain about are all gonna have much better jobs this time next year, and J2 will just be around for a few cons and thats it. Quite the accomplishment huh? I bet they cant wait to sit around with their grandkids and tell them how they helped get rid of a TV show that millions enjoyed, and the 2 nicest men in Hollywood put their hearts and souls into for 15 years, because they hate the fact that the stars arent chasing Wendigos anymore. To quote Dean Winchester “Ah the internet, where everyone can be a dick”

Review: A Quiet Place

A Quiet Place has been in theatres for two weeks now and is still claiming its place at the top of the box office.

Starring John Krasinski, Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe. Directed by John Krasinski. 14A.

Set in a post-apocalyptic world, A Quiet Place follows a husband (John Krasinski) and wife (Emily Blunt) who will stop at nothing to protect their children (Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe) from what lurks in the shadows.

Unearthly visitors that rely solely on sound have attacked earth, nearly wiping out the entire human race. Those who did survive must abide by one simple rule; always remain quiet.

As the family strives to live in silence, each day that passes becomes increasingly difficult, and the audience quickly becomes aware of the dangers of making a sound.

This suspenseful film leaves you completely on the edge of your seat, restlessly awaiting the next noise that will halt the quiet.

Silence says so much

The use of silence in A Quiet Place creates this uneasily eerie atmosphere where even the slightest noise will attract these terrifying creatures.

It is so much more than a horror film

John Krasinski, most known for playing Jim Halpert on The Office, co-wrote, directed and starred in the film. Although John Krasinski has directed many episodes of The Office, this is the first feature-length horror film that he has directed on his own.

Krasinski blew this film out of the park. The cinematography is outstanding, and his ability to tell this story so effectively without the use of dialogue was incredible.

Every shot is packed with subtle cues that help establish the setting, the tight-knit bond of this family, and the overall situation.

Although this film falls into the horror genre, it is so much more than that. This is truly a film about family and how far parents will go to protect their children.

Originally Krasinski’s real-life wife, Emily Blunt, had suggested other actresses to play the role of Krasinski’s wife in this film. But after reading the script, she knew she had to play the role.

Along with learning lines, the whole cast learned sign language for this film, which made the film that much more authentic and impacting.

Millicent Simmonds, the actress who plays Krasinski and Blunt’s daughter, is actually deaf in real life.

It is almost refreshing to see a deaf actress get the part and deliver an outstanding performance that is so pure and raw.

Krasinski had no second-thought when casting her. “It was non-negotiable for me to cast a deaf actress,” says Krasinski.

“I needed a guide. I needed someone to walk me through what it was like to be the only deaf one in a hearing family.”

Krasinski went on to praise Simmonds saying, “she was so amazing to have on set.”

Simmonds role provides a truly unique angle in the film, especially through the use of minimal sound, that allows the audience to experience this horrifying world from her silent perspective.

This film, alongside other films that made it big this year, including Guillermo Del Toro’s The Shape of Water, that was filmed in Toronto, and won Best Picture at the Oscars, were monumental in paving the way for diversity, as well as including a community that is so often left out of Hollywood pictures.

Overall, the film is definitely worth the watch. It is not your typical horror film, and to be frank, that’s definitely a good thing!

Alive and burning brighter

Supernatural 13x09 “The Bad Place,” and 13x10 “Wayward Sisters.”

Wayward daughters, here we come!!!

The Bad Place

The title of this episode is interesting because there’s more than one way to read it, as with so much of this season. “The Good Place” is a TV show, which has a central twist [spoiler] of actually being an experiment in Hell, where people think they’ve been sent to Heaven by mistake, only to realise they’re really damned after all. So the Good Place is really the Bad Place. What does that mean for Supernatural? Is the title meant to be ironic or straight? Is the Bad Place Kia’s dream-walking destination, or is it something else? Is it an inversion -- a place people think is bad, but is actually good? The Earth of the Supernatural ‘verse has always seemed a place of horrors, until we contrast it with Mordor, or Purgatory, or Kia’s Bad Place. Of course, there’s also a horror novel by Dean Koontz called The Bad Place about a guy who wants a normal life but keeps getting dragged into a life of supernatural horror by his inbred family. On point.

This episode overtly sets things up for the Wayward Sisters ep to follow, but it still has some interesting things to say about our core story threads of how to be a good father, Dean’s wonky moral radar, and people having heard of hunting and/or Sam and Dean.

James continues to be a terrible father. He’s loving and decent, but doesn’t trust Patience enough to start being her own person and making her own choices. It’s no wonder she leaves. That’s not a tenable place to be if she actually wants to grow and have her own life. I hope James will get his head out of his ass and realise that. It would be nice to have him in Wayward Daughters as an ongoing supporting character, especially if we get to see the relationship become more healthy. That’s not something depicted enough, so it would be refreshing.

The writers continue to do the bait and switch with Jack, and it’s working because I can’t decide if it’s going to pay off with him actually doing something terrible when no-one expects it or if they are just using it for tension. I’m leaning towards tension, but I won’t be surprised if he ends up killing Lucifer down the track. Patricide, you know, would fit in with this season’s themes pretty well.

Dean’s moral radar continues to be all over the place. He still thinks Jack could be a monster, and that he’s going to go looking for Lucifer. That says at least as much about Dean and his own daddy issues as it possibly could about Jack. Assuming for a moment that I’m wrong and Dean moral radar is actually fine, perhaps it’s wonky for Jack because Jack is still forming his moral character and could go either way. I’d be tempted to go with this idea, because it’s interesting, except then we got the moment Dean decides to threaten Kia with a gun and force her to help them, falling right back into the old habits of making bad choices when family is on the line. That was more than a dick move, it was a monstrous one. The ends don’t justify the means, and he was plain wrong and cruel. I find Dean’s choice here even more interesting than the possibility that Jack is morally unformed. We’ve already seen this season that Dean’s emotional support system has shifted, and is much more reliant on Castiel now, and I’m wondering if the moral wonkiness we’re seeing is because he hasn’t really found his balance yet. Is he awkwardly straddled between needing his birth family for emotional support, and creating his own more adult connections? He’s so terrible at actually talking to Castiel about anything to do with emotions, so I find this an entirely believable reading.

We also have another instance of people thinking they know about the Winchesters. The angels kidnap Kia specifically as bait:

Kaia: Your plan? It sucks. They won't come for me. Female Angel: What do you mean? Kaia: I mean, you picked the wrong bait. I'm not the kind of girl folks come for. In this world, I don't even rank a milk carton. No one is gonna come for me. I'm not white, rich, blonde. No one's gonna fight for me. I don't matter. Female Angel: Of course you don't matter. But they think you do. They'll show. And when they do, we'll kill them and take the boy. (x)

I actually thought the dialogue in this scene was really clunky. It was like Berens had to shoe-horn stuff in, and used bad exposition to do it. It was really jarring compared to the rest of the episode. But putting that aside, the angels take on the Winchesters is that they will try to save anyone human, but also that it will be easy to kill them and take what they want.

Frankly, I’m living for this theme. For ages, I’ve wanted the text to explore what other characters know or think they know about the Winchesters, and it’s now quite clear this is a major arc this season. Anyway, Housemate and I were talking about this, and we were wondering why everyone (except Crowley) always underestimates the Winchesters. I made the following case:

When they are at their most deadly, no-one survives to tell the tale; or else it happens in a place where stories aren’t likely to end up with the Earth-bound monsters -- like Dean’s stint in Purgatory.

Those who do survive the Winchesters to tell the tale are often around when things go wrong, and Sam and Dean act like bumbling idiots. The scene in 13x12 is an example of this. The witches easily enspell Dean, and get away (temporarily) because Sam and Dean are rolling around on the ground fighting each other. Let’s be real, most of the pleasure in watching that scene was in Jared and Jensen pulling faces and being ridiculous. If the witches were to tell anyone about it at this point, it would be all, “Pfft, they aren’t all that.” I suspect a lot of the monster gossip about the Winchesters comes from those moments, and paints them as half-assed -- yes, they are hunters so sensible monsters steer clear, but they kill things by luck a bunch of the time, so the gossip goes. A hard-ass monster wouldn’t be that worried, based on the stories.

There must also be something in the gossip about the Winchesters being bleeding hearts who make stupid sentimental decisions -- mostly focused on saving people, and that always includes Humans, but can include monsters too if they are law-abiding. Hence the witch going to them for help, and these angels taking Kia as bait.

This really fascinates me, and I hope we actually get to see some of the gossip happening in an episode down the track. Even better if it’s played off against Sam and Dean at their most competent and deadly, so that the chasm between the stories and the reality is obvious.

There were two other things I particularly loved about this episode: The angels attacking the wards as a group. So cool. And that Dean and Sam ended up in a giant monster footprint. Housemate and I both screeched “Dinosaur World!!!” at the same time.

This season really is giving me all the things I want. :)

Wayward Sisters

*happysigh* We have all been waiting for this episode for ages, right? And it didn’t disappoint. The showrunners put some real care into this, from writing, performances, and direction, down to giving the ep prime place as the mid-season finale, as it deserved.

I wonder if “I Am the Fire” will be the show’s anthem in the same way that “Carry on My Wayward Son” is for Supernatural. Good choice if so.

Halestorm, I Am the Fire

There was something viscerally satisfying about seeing all these women on the screen together. I love them all. I love that Claire is being set up as the lead, the kick-ass Hunter with a chip on her shoulder. God, her opening scene was fantastic! Mr Werewolf. Hahahaha. She’s going to be great. I love that Jody and Donna are there as role models and protectors, and Donna’s smiling face is a treasure. I love that Alex and Patience have completely different skill sets from hunting but still have a place. I love the female energy.

I also really liked Kaia, and as always have mixed feelings about her fridging. The show really has learned, because here we have a fridging that is not a fridging. I’m still not happy with it, because the larger cultural trope of killing off the women of colour is still a thing, so it bothers we whenever it happens. But Supernatural at least seem to be trying hard to include more diversity, and to be fair to the writers, that presents a real problem given the genre and death count on the show. This new method they’re trying -- fridging some characters of colour as needed for the story, but making sure there are other characters who survive from the same demographic, is definitely a step forward. I’m never going to be 100% happy with this, as long as minorities of all kinds have a higher death count and lower representation on screen, but I will pay that Supernatural is actively trying to do better, and succeeding for the most part. As fridgings go, this was effective in deepening Claire’s characterisation in a way that should play out really well in the new show, especially with the New Kaia in the mix.

In terms of Kaia as a character, I’m sad they killed her because I liked her, but I’m pretty optimistic we’re going to get a similar Kaia with the hooded figure. With all the set up of Morder, we know that the people in the other worlds are very like the ones here, just with a few different quirks and edges, so the Kaia who came through is likely to have most of the same characteristics as Kaia Mark 1, including the dreamwalking. I’m happy about this, as I really want Kaia as part of the Wayward team.

Apart from that, I don’t have much to say. The writing was strong, and I loved the touches, like:

JODY: They were on a hunting trip and I haven’t heard from them in a few days. It’s time to come home. (x)

If this is what the show is going to be like, I’m here for it. I’m actually more excited for it than I thought I would be, and I can’t wait for the show to start airing.

Season 5, episode 15 - “Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid”: This episode will introduce you to Sheriff Jody for the first time and show you how she got into the supernatural life. Season 9, episode 19 - “Alex Annie Alexis Anne”: In this episode, we not only get to see Sheriff Jody in action as a hunter, but also her rescue and “adoption” of Alex. Season 10, episode 8 - “Hibbing 911”: Though this isn’t Sheriff Donna’s first episode, it is the firs. where she’s clued into the supernatural realm, and where she begins her friendship with Sheriff Jody. Season 10, episode 9 - “The Things We Left Behind”: This episode reintroduces us to Claire and shows us the troubled, solitary life she’s been leading since losing her father. Season 10, episode 20 - “Angel Heart”: Claire hunts down her mother in this episode, and ultimately loses her. While it’s tragic, the episode ends with Claire being sent to live with Jody and Alex. Season 11, episode 12 - “Don’t You Forget About Me”: If you only have time to watch one episode, watch this one. This was the first episode where we got to see some glimpses of Wayward Sisters. It is our first look at the unique hunting family Jody has created. Season 13, episode 3 - “Patience”: This episode introduces us to Patience, and gives us insight into her powers. It’s also where Jody and Patience first meet. Season 13, episode 9 - “The Bad Place”: In our first introduction to Kaia, we learn about her powerful dreamwalking abilities, as well as the lonely life she’s been leading as she’s tried to find some sort of peace from “the bad place.” It’s also the last episode to air before the backdoor pilot. Anna Milton

So, I’ve seen a few interesting posts recently like this one about Anna so I just wanted to throw my dimes in :)

For me absolutely Anna shows us that grace is not what makes an Angel who they are, still along the concept that who you are is not what you are, grace is an Angel’s battery, it’s not even necessarily so much a soul equivalent because with or without it she doesn't act any differently really, it’s literally what makes an Angel “go”. It also however dulls their emotions and doesn't allow them to feel quite like a Human does. It does though allow them to feel enough that some of them might feel the desire to WANT to feel those emotions and feelings... just as Anna did and just as Cas does too.

Perhaps there is something to be said for the idea that Angels have different personalities of course but also different levels of “function” of their grace in this way, just as Humans are also not all as equally guided/affected by their souls (a soulless person in Supernatural often as a rule does bad and immoral things, but even with a soul some still do and without a soul some don't like Len in season 11, so there seems to be a spectrum).

The idea of spectrum / grey areas is of course a running theme in Supernatural so I like this idea. Not all Angels are the same is another obvious theme, with Angels like Hannah, Rachel and Samandriel sort of in the middle but then Angels like Castiel, Daniel, Uriel, Zachariah, Gabriel and Balthazar at more extreme ends of the spectrum regarding morality, selfishness, their attitudes towards Humanity, other Angels, themselves and God...

It all in the end comes down to the individual, their perceptions, their choices, their desires. Though there is a stereotype which generally is more or less relevant as to who a character is depending on what they are (Demons are bad, Humans are good, Angels are soldiers), it is not always the case, especially once you get to know them for more than 5 seconds and it’s generally much more grey than at first they are depicted.

Once you get to know them many characters are far less exaggeratedly all at one end or the other, with more of a grouping along the spectrum in the middle with some flung out at each end for sure, but not everyone is as extremely adherent to the stereotype as it first appears - this is obviously a key theme of the show overall.

Regarding Anna herself, obviously I see her as a huge Cas mirror, how can we not. There’s a ton of meta on that, I won't go into it here.

But even aside from this (and building towards this too) my reading is that she does identify as Human, she wants to be Human. She wanted to be Human so badly that she cut out her own grace and was prepared to live a finite life on Earth and die as a Human once that life had been lived. She didn't have a plan to go back to Heaven once her ‘experiment’ was over, this was what he had chosen.

BUT once she remembers that she was an Angel she then accepts that in order to fight the fight to go to battle she has to take back her grace. It doesn't seem to me to be by choice, she’s not happy about it, she’s not excited or happy to get her grace back, it’s only in order to fight, it’s a tool for a purpose.

Where have we heard that before?

For me it’s emphasised that Anna needs her grace but doesn't want it:

1. NEED:

Ruby: “Anna's grace is gone. You understand? She can't angel up. She can't protect us. We can't fight Heaven and Hell. One side maybe, but not both. Not at once”. They then create their plan to get her grace back and it works.

2. WANT: Anna earlier tells Dean:

Anna: “I mean it. Every emotion, Dean, even the bad ones... It's why I fell. It's why... why I'd give anything not to have to go back. Anything.” Dean: “Feelings are overrated, if you ask me.” Anna: “Beats being an angel.” Dean: “How's that possible? You guys are powerful and perfect. You don't doubt yourselves or God or anything.” ANNA: “Perfect... Like a marble statue. Cold... no choice... only obedience.”

Then later in 4x16, the next Anna episode Cas even explains the clear difference to Dean, just after telling him that he was getting too close to Dean:

Dean: “You don't want me doing this, trust me” Cas: “WANT it? No. But I’ve been told we NEED it... I would give anything not to have you do this”.

This conversation is such a huge mirror of Anna’s conversation with Dean above, the same themes, the same words! Right before Anna shows up again, I mean it can’t be more obviously linked.

Anyway, Anna then meets with Cas who is struggling with his doubts, falling, she is tricked by Cas, who we can see regrets this, is struggling himself, is just a little slower down the road than Anna was in falling. Anna is the exposition, Cas is the one we care about.

dreamed with my son roamed in remote place near Tianjin, northern China, my university city. I carried my passed mother's corpse and search for service to bury it. we were refuted once for too expensive. then near country fair we met Gao Jun, my once alumnus who soon after army train in beginning of PRC campus migrated from our major Philosophy school into Economics, but stayed in dorm of our class girls. her husband or brother inquired our problem and extended his help, out of Chinese taboo, while Miss Gao remained her self-possessed normally among guests in her spacious house in my dream. we likely rested there and waited for more money remit from our relatives, or aided by Gao to settle our funeral. the northern China countryside scene lonely detailed in dream, different from my hometown, central China. last night it drizzled, left wet ground when I went to dorm canteen for breakfast. last night I put 2 pillows in stack and its the highest pillow I ever had with my own, for the cover of my pillar sent to laundry and no replacement. this month my salary from QRRS exceptionally supportive: nearly 600 additional totals ￥3600, and my younger brother gifted me ￥200 for update my wrecked shoes. with it, I bought my son, woz birthday cake a dearest one, ￥128 fruits cake titled 和风莓语. we designated praying for Japanese spiritual and English.the cake shop near my dorm and kindly offered us a set of stainless steer cake knife and forks. my son lately returned from his school, near 7 pm, for his school forced even grade 7th students to have night class aiming better performance in rat race entrance exam of elite senior middle school. his mom this time actively joined us in celebration. woz, and all us likely enjoyed the delicacy, fruit cake. after first round of eating cake, my son lent himself to my planned task abrupt, setup his new account in google chrome for easy access family asset book. that lasted more than an hour and wonderfully done. I then left, urging my son listening and watching more English as cliche. on bus station, the last bus line missed.
