A photo of a photo of a painting of my father that I did for his 60th birthday, along with a fresh cherry pie I made with lattice top. Sorry you’ll have to imagine the pie. :) I wanted to honor him because 60 seemed like a big deal. Next week I will turn that same age, how will I honor my life? Sadly, some years later, my dad said to me, I never liked that painting. Ouch, parents wield swords, be careful. I suppose it was conditioning that I needed to be a stronger artist. Also, I was pretty happy with the painting, and that didn’t change... "First Light After Eons Of Darkness" c.2001-2003. Acrylic on canvasboard. This one's pretty old but expressed what I was feeling while living with my parents in my mid-20s because I was disabled by my schizophrenia. I've talked a lot about how I felt no one knew I existed because I didn't get out much at all, had no friends, but was extremely lonely. I knew it would end at some point (it did) and this was how I imagined it would feel. Scared. But that the light isn't a bad thing, just something I wasn't used to. I made the face the way I imagined a humanoid might look after evolving to the dark: giant eyes to see properly, thin pale skin. (This was a few years before "The Descent" came out in theaters, they did much better than me with their humanoids, IMO). "Pale Spring Still Clinging to Winter" c.2005, acrylic on canvasboard. This painting was made right around the same time the video for "Helena" by My Chemical Romance aired, and I got the idea for the facial coloring from Tracey Phillips' (aka Helena) makeup (swipe to see the comparison). The title came from a line in Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers, when Grima Wormtongue is talking to/creeping on Eowyn, saying "...so cold, like pale spring clinging to winter's chill..." I don't know why I combined the two ideas into one, but both had a profound influence on my art at the time (the mid 2000s).
