Gonna post this here as well since my friends' outfits have some y2k elements, like the Adio skate shoes and the Dickie's shorts.
Adios are my second favorite skate shoe after DC.

Fall 2007, party at my house freshman year of college. My neighbor ratted me out to my parents so I never had another party, but this one was fun as fuck! We were listening to Cannibal Corpse when I took this picture :)

Shadow Generations thoughts
what a great game that has Sonic Generations as an added bonus
the Shadow the Game lore is back in a big way, treated super seriously. the level of angst has not been seen since the height of Shadow's popularity, and that is excellent. part of me feels kind of cathartic sympathising with his problems. whether they're relatable or completely out there, his numerous trials in life never stop him... He keeps going, no matter what... I LOVE YOU SHADOW!
I love his painful TF cutscenes. he holds his head, moaning in pain, and then you get a manta ray to swim on. what the hell. it brings me so much joy. really channelling middle schooler conceptualisation energy, which is what Shadow deserves
related: YOU'RE A KID YOU'RE A SQUID YOU'RE A KID YOU'RE A SQUID YOU'RE A
back to the manta ray though. it was extremely fraught fighting Metal Overlord on that stupid thing. Metal Sonic, my dear son, was not going easy on me. I was getting my ass kicked. I had to stop and take a break for a couple days. then I came back and got a B rank immediately. I don't understand
I love the trash talk Shadow dishes out with the bosses. they all hate his guts and he parries them harshly even if he literally doesn't remember them (poor Mephiles). Shadow is so cool
I was really sleeping on Omega. he's a super minor character here but all of his dialogue is great. I worry now that I missed some and I want to go back. his attempt to cheer up Shadow is to invite him on a killing spree. he doesn't care about Shadow's baggage, he likes him for who he is now and doesn't walk on eggshells because he's Troubled. I think they're perfect for eachother and I kind of ship them now, doomed to fail because Shadow is a Victorian widow eternally in mourning and Omega is Omega
Maria is wonderful in this game and it's unfortunate that I mostly played it after seeing the movie. Movie Maria is the best interpretation of her character. this is the best she's ever been in the games, though. the first scene where she hugs Shadow and he just doesn't know how to react is heartbreaking. I love the little details about her life on the Ark, I just think it's interesting. she likes Italian food and is proud of her schoolwork. she feels more naturally sweet instead of more of a symbol of innate goodness and purity. it makes the end of the game hit really hard
that was a romantic love confession. fight me
Gerald's journal is one of my favourite things in the series, honestly. it has the difficult task of making all the convoluted rubbish that happened in the 2000s Sonic games make sense as a series of events, and I think it succeeds. the cosmic horror flavour is great fun. it definitely wouldn't stand on its own as an AU 1950s sci-fi horror story, but as part of a Sonic game it's incredibly strong storytelling and humanises a lot of outwardly ridiculous elements. I'll talk about it in a few separate points
that picture of Maria in a wheelchair and looking really Not great vindicates all of our fan art
Maria designed the rocket skates. she has talent and would be making OCs with one angel wing and one devil wing and convoluted backstories if that kind of thing existed in the early 1950s. her and Shadow are a great duo
the Biolizard being developed from tests on lizards implies that Shadow in turn is derived from a regular earth hedgehog. Gerald's development and Black Doom's DNA made him a rubberhose cartoon thing. that's wild, because it raises questions about the origins of the other Sonic characters. Sonic is from Christmas Island, which IRL was a site of nuclear testing for the British Empire, so that could provide a little explanation at least, but what about the others? how far back does all of this go, was Shadow the first of his kind? I'm imagining Gerald looking at Shadow in his fermentation tube and thinking to himself "that guy needs shoes and white gloves as soon as possible. he looks indecent without them"
I wonder if we will meet Eggman's other cousin anytime soon
back to the game itself. THEY BROUGHT BACK THE "IT'LL BE A DATE TO DIE FOR" LINE OHHHH MY GOD. I joked that I would next be expecting the "this is like taking candy from a baby, which is fine by me" line but alas, it was not to be
Shadow also didn't swear. I was hoping for just one "damn" for old time's sake 🥲
the ending was really crushing. Shadow worked so hard to confront his past and move on, with Rouge as his witness, and now he's back to square one. he was deeply hurt all over again. it gives the impression that he will never be able to truly heal. this is clearly a narrative choice, and a really sad one. Shadow crying makes me genuinely sad for him and I just want to hold him. as I've said before, Shadow was my first crush, and no matter how old and jaded I get I will still be very fond of him. to me, he represents a time when I was innocent. I was a loner too, not of my own choosing, and I related to him and admired him. I do like revelling in his angst, who doesn't? but the Shadow Generations ending broke through all the meta stuff that's built up around him. I guess that's how I can describe it
for my last point, I'll end on a happy note. there's a lot of concept art as collectibles, and I'm not usually someone focused on collectables but some of these drawings feel really valuable. there's a few pieces of Shadow the Game development art where Sonic is still drawn in the Sonic CD style, and I absolutely love that
tl;dr
I LOVE SHADOW THE HEDGEHOG!!!!

Been on a Shadow and Maria kick lately

Wrote a fanfic of Maria and Shadow living on the ARK, so most of these are inspired by that. For a good chunk of it, Shadow doesn’t have his inhibitor rings or air shoes, so he just has standard gloves and socks. Shadow learns to skate by sliding down the hall in his socks.

Maria has a radio that can pick up radio stations on Earth, cause Gerald is smart enough to build such a thing. Because something I don’t see people embrace enough is the 1950’s aesthetic. If the ARK incident took place 50 years ago from the early 2000s, it would put it in the 1950s. I was listening to 50s doo-wop and rock n roll while doodling. Plus, can you imagine Maria listening to “Earth Angel” while she’s daydreaming about life on Earth?

This is when Shadow is going to test his inhibitor rings, and Maria is asking the real questions. Saw a lot of drawings of Shadow wearing a hospital gown, and while I think it’s adorable…why would he need one when he doesn’t wear clothes to begin with?

ROUND 1B, MATCH 11 OUT OF 16!

Propaganda Under the Cut:
Sam:
Best of the early 2000s modern Cinderellas. Not even Disney?! Hillary Duff and Chad Micheal Murray do the whole Cinderella story in High School! Everyone in it is amazing. Sam can wear roller skates and go to a masquerade ball in the same night! And she is exposed as Cinderella which is different from the typical story line where the stepfamily tries to keep her identity hidden. And she makes it rain! In a drought!
So the love interest in this is the worst but Hilary Duff is pretty iconic. The moment that she came out to the dance in the dress and the 2000s pop song is playing… it made my childhood.
She's a classic. She's Hilary Duff. She got a kiss in the rain during drought.
Because she still has the stepmother (and dead father) and step-sisters who treat her horribly and the charming "prince"/football star, but she actually saves herself! As far as I remember, there is no shoe fitting scene, Austin finds out in another way - from emails that Sam's sisters find and spread around school. But Sam stands up to her stepmother after finding a letter (and will) from her father and sorts her life off before getting the guy.
And, to be terribly honest, I've never been a fan of Cinderella stuff, but I did like this film. Probably because of the change to the story and Hilary Duff. And Sam's best friend Carter.
Mary:
This movie is the best live-action Cinderella movie I have no notes. The chemistry between Mary and Joey Parker is way better than Hilary Duff and Austin Ames in Cinderella Story. Tell Me Something I Don’t Know was such a moment in time.

Are Roll’s wheels more like inline skates or quad skates?
i personally imagine Heelys
Heelys are still a thing???
I mean, I never had them, but I've heard of them. (And I think I knew a kid who owned some??? IDK, I feel old...)
Anyway, the question itself. Honestly, I didn't really think about it thag much until now, so I did a little research.
Inline skates usually have 4 (or I think 3 in some cases) wheels in a line. They're also larger in diameter, making them good for speed. They also (apparently) offer greater stability and are pretty versatile, too.
Quads, on the other hand, have two wheels on each side (4 on each shoe) and are great for manoeuvrability. They have a wider wheelbase, which makes you less likely to fall sideways and are also "great" for beginners. (I'm probably biased against them because I tried them once and NEVER touched roller skating again.)
Then there's Heelys, which have only one wheel per shoe (or I think in some cases 2?) That can't make it easy to walk with the wheels in. I don't know much about them other than they were VERY popular in the early 2000s when I was a kid.
So then, what wheels are in Roll's feet? Well, the wheels were something Dr. Light had built into Roll when he first made her.
Everything about Roll was experimental, from her core to even her wheels. On that note, I think Light made a new kind of skate that combines the speed of the inline and the manoeuvrability of the quads. At the end of the day, Roll was built to be a child. And i think children, when they go roller skating, want to go fast and have fun. It is very much no fun when you fall down or hurt yourself because you couldn't turn in time.
That's just what i think, though, I'd mainly like to leave it up to interpretation.
Can you imagine Roll in Heelys, though? Or ANY of the light kids in Heelys? Rock and Blues would probably have a blast!
Also, I haven't had the chance to make more ask proto!roll because of life stuff, so the only thing I was able to actually do was AU questions.
I do see your questions for the characters, and I promise they'll be answered as soon as possible!

I said I would do another post featuring the early 2000s outfits that came with my $40 thrift store Julie! First up was the Chocolate Cherry Outfit featuring everything except the headband.

Next we had a soccer outfit, missing socks, shinguards, ball, towel, and bag. The shoes feature a darling little early 2000s AG logo. I’m also unsure if the hanger came with this set or a different one, but it’s too cute.

We also had the 2003 holiday limited edition coat and hangar included in the bag. I love the custom tag and the hanger. The coat also has a wonderfully 2003 feel while still being adorable today.

There was one lone mitten in the coat sleeve. I was able to get the stain off but was disappointed there was only one. No matter! I gave it to Molly to wear on the hand that isn’t in her skating muff.

Finally we have the ski trip hat. I have Samantha’s muff but not her hat, so she is currently in possession of this fluffy wonder.

Oh! I almost forgot these little stick-on earrings. So cute!
Other bags with off-brand dolls and clothes featured mini grin pins. I was sad that they separated them out as I wasn’t willing to spend more for them, but it looked as though someone got rid of their early 2000s AG collection. Just glad I could give these pieces a home for a good price!
