I knew Deadwood had FANTASTIC dramaturgy because I looked at E.B. Farnum and went, "This guy looks like a fucking idiot. He looks like he's trying to look cool, but he just got the flashiest shit from two years ago and is wearing it totally wrong."
Which is pretty much EXACTLY WHAT HE'S DOING. Because he's a PERIOD ACCURATE swagless, trend-hounding, fake-Gucci-knockoff fucking IDIOT.
That's why it's so important to preserve that dumb shit. That stupid shit. To get a truly full picture of the context of a time period, you gotta know what was fuckin TACKY, not just what was popular.
i do think theres something sad about how largely only the literature that's considered especially good or important is intentionally preserved. i want to read stuff that ancient people thought sucked enormous balls

E.B. Farnum: It is no disloyalty to be a realist, Richardson. We are mortal. One hopes for the best. One perseveres. One re-evaluates constantly. One is an asshole if one doesn't. Loyalty expanded is not loyalty betrayed.

I watched Deadwood: The Movie the other week and I gotta say it wasn’t quite what I expected.
Since we waited so long for this to happen to finish off the show finally after it’s cancellation all those years ago, I was expecting a spectacle but instead it was in fact quite lacklustre.
To have Al Swearengen back should have been epic but instead he was sickly and dying from all the drink and did in fact die at the end. That was a sad sight to see. I wanted to see Al be great again. Be badass again.
Calamity Jane also kind of took a hit character wise and was very soft and not as badass as she once was. She was in love and it was cute but I miss her being badass. She did shoot one of the hitmen in a badass way but that was about it.
Seth was still really the only badass one along with Trixie.
Bullock is always badass though, as the most badass Sheriff in all the land. He just doesn’t give a fuck and I love that about him. He’s like you commit a crime, I’ll get you no matter what and that’s awesome. He’s my favourite character along with Al. He got the guy in the end as always! He’s on fire.
Timmy did look quite a lot older now with his hair greying. I have never seen it so grey. It did actually quite suit him though, I liked it <3 Hot as always <3
Hearst was back and as was the story of how they faked Trixie’s death in the show and he killed off. So there were a lot of needed flashbacks for those of us who didn’t have time to rewatch the show again before it aired. I last watched it on DVD years ago but didn’t rewatch it all again, like half which I’d missed, well I think I missed the first season and watched from the second on TV.
Hearst had Utter killed off to get his land to build telephone lines and they spent most of the movie trying to figure out who killed him after taking in the wrong person at first and some hitmen coming so they wouldn’t tell the truth.
It was cute seeing Trixie and Sol get married at the end but then Hearst came to try and get her arrested for attempting to murder him all those years ago but they had no juristriction. Instead Hearst got arrested by Bullock and then beaten up when he was taken outside by the general public! Woah. Then he got taken to jail.
Bullock went back to his wife and it snowed! pretty <3
Trixie was with Al when he died and tried to speak the Lord’s Prayer over him and Al being Al says “Let him fucking stay there” while she holds his hand and he dies. That was sad.
Also, according to Wikipedia wasn’t how the real Al died who by the sounds of it was murdered in a street in Denver like his twin not long before. I’m not sure why they decided to change the way he died. He obviously would not have been ill at that point like in this so he could have been strong and better like normal.
I dunno, it did disappoint me. It could have been worse I suppose but it also could have been better. Not a lot seemed to happen throughout, my dad said it seemed like an extended episode. Which it did. It should have been explosive and fun and great to see all our favourite Deadwood characters back together but instead they seemed to have lost their edges and mellowed sort of.
It just wasn’t what I waited 13 years for tbh.
I’m also sad Powers Boothe died before it was made and got written out when he was originally supposed to be in it as I loved his character in it too.
There’s a lot of people disappointed by it on IMDb reviews as well and I’m right there with them. I wouldn’t give it 10/10 like some. I would give it like a 6 maybe. That might just be for the nostalgia factor too.
There should have been more E.B. Farnum too, I always liked his character.
Alma came back just as a plot device to Seth could remember his time with her basically too so was pretty underused and wasted.
I wish something more exciting had happened, like I dunno. Maybe like a great train robbery would have been more exciting and a murder spree after, who knows. We got a murder mystery that wasn’t that hard to figure out.
Timothy Olyphant <3

I’d post this on the other blog but eh. I just finished Deadwood and the movie and it got me more than a bit emotional. I was initially drawn in by the simple virtue of Swearengen being a visual basis for Dutch’s appearance in RDR2 but I can see why it was one of the primary inspirations for the Redemption games. It was fun to see subtle things they took like fashion available to both the player and NPCs, and big things like Strawberry’s mayor dressing just like E.B. Farnum or Micah bearing more than a passing resemblance to Doc Cochran both physically and in body language. Yes, the language is course and rough and gets everywhere but if you’re a fan of Red Dead I think you owe it to yourself to watch it. It’s only three seasons and a movie.
#also sadie reminds me a lot of calamity jane#if i wasn't as attached to my male RDO character as i am i'd probably turn him into dan dority

"Someone's buyin' up deeds to land where it's known there's no gold. No one knows who's doing it."
The same rumor being repeated almost verbatim by several people.
Apparently the rumor itself starting from E.B. Kermit Farnum. But where did he hear it from? Is HE doing it?
I swear to god if Farnum started this Undead Roaming The Earth nonsense I'mma laugh.
#undeadwood#undeadwood spoilers#i guess??#i have a lot of thoughts#about this show#and these characters

It’s time to return to Deadwood! The beloved HBO series will finally wrap up its story with a film, debuting this Friday!
Last summer, I binged watched Deadwood, and I loved it! The setting and writing are incredible. The characters are layered. And absolutely no one can cuss like Ian McShane. Al Swearengen makes swearing a damned art form.
Deadwood is full of incredible actors and an over-arcing storyline that was unceremoniously cut off off when the series was cancelled in 2006.
The film will pick up ten years after the events of the season three finale. Some characters are making the journey back to Deadwood for the first time in ten years. While others have remained in Deadwood, building up the town.
In the trailers, it appears the biggest threat will be George Hearst, who is now a senator. He’s the absolute worst and has always been that way. What will he do when he finds out that Trixie wasn’t killed when he ordered Al to do it? What will Sol do? Or even Seth?
In addition to Hearst, the trailer shows us that Alma is back in town. How will that affect Seth? They didn’t part on the best of terms, and in the trailer, it appears that Seth is still with Martha. He has a little boy on his shoulders as well. Did they finally have a child together?
E.B. is back and so is Mr. Wu. Calamity Jane and Joanie may or may not end up being an item, but for now they’re sharing the screen together again and that’s enough. One thing that makes me sad is that Powers Boothe (Cy Tolliver) passed away in 2017 before filming ever started. His character will be dearly missed in the film.
The story seems to center on Al and Seth talking about what’s to come for the town and South Dakota’s new statehood. No doubt, these two will join forces to take down Hearst, and I’m here for this!
If you haven’t seen Deadwood, there’s still time to binge watch it!
A word of warning, if you don’t like cursing or coarse language, it might not be for you. I believe it holds a record for using the word “fuck” more times in a single minute of television than any other show. It also contains its fair share of racial slurs, and there are some anti-semitic comments towards one of its main characters, too. Be prepared for that going in.
Take a look at the trailers and two stills below, and get ready to watch on May 31st!
