Whumpcember Day 27: Bleeding Out

Caretaker shook her head as tears filled her eyes. She pressed down harder on Whumpee’s bleeding torso with several tissues in hand. No matter what she did, it seemed as if he wouldn’t stop bleeding. She’d been trying to stop it for what felt like hours. But nothing worked and they would soon be running out of tissues. They didn’t have much other resources left to use. “It won’t stop. I can’t get the bleeding to stop.” 

Whumpee winced in pain, his eyes shut tightly. “It’s okay… Just–just whatever you do, don’t let go.” 

“But it’s not working!” 

“Yes it is! I promise it is…” He grunted in pain. 

She paused in horror. “Am I hurting you?” 

“No! No, do not stop applying pressure.” 

“Whumpee it’s not working!” 

“Yes it is… I promise.” Shock washed over him when a tear fell onto his cheek. He opened his eyes and looked up at Caretaker, realizing she was crying. Whumpee put on a weak smile. “Caretaker?” 

“Yes?” She sniffled. 

“Promise me something, okay?” 

“Okay…” She nodded slowly. 

He placed a shaky hand over both of hers. “Promise me you won’t cry when I’m gone.” 

“NO! No! Don’t say that!” 

“Caretaker,” Whumpee begged weakly. His smile disappeared. “Please.” 

“Whumpee, you can’t go–” 

“Promise me.” He urged. 

She hesitated, tears still rolling down her cheeks. Caretaker nodded. “Okay… I promise.” 

“Thank you.” His smile returned. “And Caretaker? Can I tell you something?” 

“Yes, you can tell me.” She nodded. 

“I love you.” 

She was surprised. He really felt that way about her? How come he never told her before? “Whumpee I—” His eyes closed shut and his smile withered away. His hand went limp over both of hers. Her heart stopped. 

No. 

He couldn’t be. 

“Whumpee?” 

He didn’t budge. 

“Whumpee, please answer me.” 

Silence. 

Caretaker’s arms went weak as she clung to Whumpee’s lifeless body, her loud sobs echoing throughout the abandoned building.
