I follow fandom fic writers, artists and other creatives for the same reason I used to listen to DVD commentaries and extras. Just little nuggets of information about the fic, their process and if I'm lucky, pictures of their pets.
#brought to you by the fact i found my POTC dvd and the pirate documentaries were really interesting#rainbow rambles

nothing makes u realise what absolute shite people say when they're being interviewed for music documentaries like manually transcribing every single line for the subtitles file
#what can i say im a perfectionist when it comes to my handmade pirate dvds#im making dvds of a birthday party documentary that we saw in the cinema last year. as presents#however the only subtitles i could find were in italian#so im having to go through the film line by line second by second and transcribe the english. at least i found any srt file tho#bc otherwise id have to manually write out all the timestamps down to the millisecond as well!! which i would do bc i take pride in my craf#but it would be an undisputable Pain In The Arse

May 18th 1987 - KISS released the film Kiss Exposed documentary film
KISS Exposed is the 1987 long-form music video released by the American rock band, Kiss. This was the band's second home video release. KISS Exposed is based on an interview with the members of Kiss (almost exclusively Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley) and is interspersed with music videos and live concert clips from throughout Kiss' career, until the album Asylum.
The original idea had been to put together a simple compilation of the promo videos the band had filmed since 1982 but according to interviews with Paul he felt that such a product wasn't right: "The new video, KISS Exposed, came out of the record company wanting to put out a compilation of our videos. And I always see that stuff as a rip-off. In essence, what they are doing is having the public pay the company back for the cost of the videos." Instead, KISS suggested a look behind the scenes/history of the band. According to Len Epand, the executive producer for the video and the senior vice president of music video production at PolyGram, "Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley were responsible for much of the idea and its execution and even came up with the title. […] When we brought the concept to Kiss, they upped the ante by giving us the rights to classic pre-video-age concert cuts from their own archives, from when they still wore make-up". The conceptual footage that tied the promo videos and live clips together was filmed at Gray Hall, a mansion in Beverly Hills, in August 1986.
The première showing of the completed product was at Billboard’s Eighth Annual Video Music Conference on November 20–22, 1986. It was described as "an original music/comedy/docu-drama".lFinal post-production work was undertaken in December 1986 at Sync Sound in New York for a January 1987 release. "Kiss have[has] now finished work on a 90-minute video package which they plan to issue worldwide in January ’87". However, this release date was soon pushed to March, something Gene and Paul referenced when they were guest VJs at MTV in January 1987. This March release date explains why KISS Exposed was listed as a new release in several US newspapers in mid-to-late March.
However, PolyGram pushed the release even further and it was eventually released on May 18. 1987. Whether or not it was the reason for the delays, Billboard wrote that PolyGram was "timing the videocassette […] to coincide with the compact disk release of the remainder of the Kiss catalog". Regardless of the reason for the moving release date it worked to drum up interest. According to an ad placed in Billboard in mid-April the video was set to ship gold (25,000 units) but the veracity of that early ad might be questioned. In an interview slightly closer to the actual release date representatives for PolyGram said that pre-orders were "approaching 25,000". (RIAA certification thresholds for long-form video have changed since the late 80s, in 1987 gold was 25,000 units and platinum was 50,000 units.] It was certified for gold status on July 23, 1987, and later platinum on October 1, 1987. Certifications always lag (and have to be asked for by the releasing label) and sales over 50,000 were reported long before the actual certification. In late 1988 Len Epand would claim sales approaching 90,000.
A follow-up was planned and almost 5 hours of footage was filmed during the first week of Hot in the Shade Tour, but it was shelved for unknown reasons. The footage leaked to the bootleg circuit and is called "eXposed II".

I'm quite certain that we're seeing the beginnings of a comeback for physical media, DVDs and CDs especially. Which is great, because it means that everybody is going to have to stop telling me that collecting movies is unnecessary when you can just stream them (I have been saying for YEARS that you can't trust digital ownership of films and I am finally vindicated-- which, I'll be honest, is not really a happy thing, but at least people can't tell me I'm just cynical and pessimistic anymore). But it's also bad, because I've been relying on the unbelievably cheap prices of secondhand movies to build up my collection, and if people start WANTING movies, god forbid, then the prices are going to go up and the good movies are going to get bought as soon as they hit the shelves, and I am far too broke to pay new movie prices.
Maybe walmart will bring back their five dollar movie bin. God I miss the five dollar movie bin.
#this post sponsored by me having bought a copy of john carpenter's the thing for 3.50 at the secondhand book store#its a really nice dvd collectors edition with a documentary on the making of the film!#and i picked it up and was like thank god nobody wants movies anymore because getting this would have required a miracle otherwise

Okay. You guys. I'm trying to remember this old show that I used to watch as a kid, and it's been driving me crazy because I don't for the life of me remember what it was called, but I'm hoping I remember enough about it that someone here might recognize it.
So first off, I'm 100 percent certain that this was NOT a show that was airing daily on TV. I don't remember how I watched it, but it was either on YouTube, or my mom got DVDs of it from the library. I THINK it was DVDs but I'm not sure.
It was a nature show for kids, and each episode focused on a different type of habitat and the animals that were in it, talking about their habits and life cycle and all of that. The episodes all started and ended in this white area with nothing in it, the topic of the episode would be introduced, and then it would start showing footage of whatever place they were talking about. It wasn't a room or set or anything, there were no walls or doors, it was just a white background.
The show was hosted by a man, but I don't think we ever actually saw him, he was just the narrator (at least I don't remember seeing him). He did have a pet/companion who was often on screen, this parrot. I'm pretty sure he was a green parrot (though he may have also been a scarlet macaw), and I remember for sure that he was male. I remember the parrot was depicted as mischievous, but would still help introduce the topic and teach the kids about all the animals. I also remember that the parrot did not ever talk to the viewers, but the narrator sometimes acted like he was talking. He'd say something like "oh, *parrot's name* said we should take a look in that forest for more animals, I think he's got a point!"
That is all I remember about the show, I watched it when I was really young I think. But if anyone remembers it please let me know!!

Actually that reblog reminded me. When people talk about sharkboy and lavagirl they always say what a weird movie it was, i wonder if not everyone knows that the movie was basically planned by the directors child (i think it was the director?) and the costumes/designs are all based on said childs drawings. Despite its faults its a genuinely fun movie, and how cool is it that its a young childs vision become a real movie? I think the industry in general would benefit so much from having more of that. Give us more weird bonkers movies
#thunderclap#i think about it a lot honestly. the lil documentary that came with the dvd of the film#showing the director being shown ideas by his kid#and you see all these crude little drawings that eventually become full fledged characters#its really heartwarming yknow??
