Growing up, we had these beautiful Abert's Squirrels around. They have these big bushy tails and long tufted ears. Gray fur and white bellies.
My grandparents who raised me loved to watch them out on the porch, they put special birdseed out just for them and would watch them every morning.
My Papa especially loved them. He set up his recliner by the big full windows in the living room so he could watch them and the birds all day while he read the paper and his book. He built he house himself 40 years ago and made sure the entire wall of the living room facing the porch was all windows. It was his and my favorite room in the whole house.
One day, while driving, an Abert's Squirrel darted across the road, too fast for Papa to stop hisnold truck, and he hit it. He slammed on the brakes, but it was too late.
He was devestated. He was a military man all his life. Fought in Vietnam. Before that he was raised in a town so rural that the school was only one room. He was taught men don't show emotions, especially over "trivial" things. Him hitting that squirrel to this day is the closest I've seen to him crying.
My Grandmother is a tiny, gentle, deeply compassionate woman who would set out slices of pear for the wasps to eat. She cried openly. She collected the squirrel with a towel and wrapped it gently, and told Papa she would find a good place to bury it. Maybe in the garden.
But since Papa had tried to stop the truck, the squirrel wound up barely being touched by the impact. It was in almost perfect condition. Still soft and beautiful.
Papa has a few hunting trophies. A pheasant he was particularly proud of is his favorite. Grandma took the squirrel to hid taxidermist in secret and had it made into a piece.
Its a beautiful piece of taxidermy. She had them pose the squirrel on a branch as if it was climbing one of the pines and had stopped to look curiously at you, its head cocked and its fluffy tail up. Its black button eyes are big and dark and look truly alive again.
She gave it to him that Christmas. It's been displayed in our living room ever since, where Papa can see it while he reads, and the squirrel can look out the window with him.
#it didn't make up for the animal's detah#but it was my grandparents- my parents#my parents legally speaking-#way of honoring it. and I always thought it was very tender and beautiful.#Papa is autistic the same way I am. I see myself in him all the time#each day he becomes more tender. age has made him kind in a way he couldn't be for most of my childhood.#he turned 90 very recently. he was born in the 1930s smack dab in the middle of the dust bowl#he had relatives that trainhopped to california but he stayed in Oklahoma#i've been thinking about him so much lately#his memory is starting to deteriorate#I live so far from him now but I want to talk to him every day#his voice lights up when I call and he always tells me “Looking forward to hearing from you tomorrow!”#he has a big deep booming voice that rarely sounds below a shout. people often think hes angry when he isnt. he has trouble regulating tone.#but Im very good at reading it now. the love in it.#Im sorry for posting such a long reply to a poll and going on and on in the tags. i just love my Papa so much. I call him Daddy now because#he really is my father he raised me since i was a baby. and it made him so happy when i asked if i could. and my grandma when i asked#if i could call her Mama. She cried again.#if anyone reads this I'd like to know. I dont usually talk here. this all just spilled out of me.

By some miracle, you didn't end up getting sick, although it took most people in town a full week to recover from the flu. The infirmary was packed every day and Nick regularly expressed his endless gratitude that you chose to work for him. Maria and Tommy isolated as best they could in their home out of fear their daughter would get sick. When the townspeople slowly began to recover, they were itching to do something, so they decided to host a dinner.
One thing you hadn't done in ages was bake. You used to do it often, something you found rather soothing and rewarding long before the world went to shit, so you decided to make something to bring to dinner. After exploring your pantry, you discovered you had the right ingredients to make a simple pie crust, so you got to work mixing and rolling out the dough, getting so lost in your thoughts that you didn't even hear Joel walk through the front door.
When he heard you working away in the kitchen, he walked softly towards the entryway and leaned against the frame to admire you. He crossed his arms and smiled to himself when he saw the bits of flour smeared across your cheeks and your hair a little disheveled, your appearance not a concern to you as you worked.
It was the sweetest thing he had seen in a long time. He almost felt bad when you suddenly sensed his presence and looked up, disrupting your flow.
"Don't mind me," he said with a smirk before strolling over to the table to sit. "Whatcha up to?"
"Making a pie," you told him as you pinched some flour between your fingers and scattered it over the counter. You picked up the sticky ball of dough and sprinkled that with a bit of flour, as well, before grabbing the rolling pin. "Thought it would be nice to bring something with us tonight."
Joel nodded and picked up an apple from the bowl on the table. "That's nice of you," he said before taking a bite, "I'm sure they don't expect us to bring anythin'. They're just bored outta their minds and lookin' for someone to play with their kid for a while."
"Hey! I need those!" you scolded when you heard the crunch. He paused his chewing and looked down at the apple in his hand before stretching his arm out to you with a grin.
"Here you go," he said, mouth full. You laughed and shook your head before focusing on the dough once again.
"Keep it," you said, "I'll still have enough."
He leaned back in his chair and watched you diligently roll the dough out until you achieved the level of thickness you desired and then laid it gently in a buttered pie pan.
"Can you help me peel?" you asked when you came over to grab the bowl from the table, and he couldn't resist reaching out to dust away the flour from your cheek. You looked at him in surprise and he gave you a small smile.
"'Course I'll help," he said, standing up to grab two knives from the drawer. After giving yourself a moment to recover from his unexpected touch, you joined him at the counter, placing the bowl between you both as you began to peel in a comfortable silence. It had been almost two weeks since you saw Ben outside the tailor, and although you always looked for him whenever you walked to and from work, you never crossed paths with him again. You had been hoping to corner him to try to get more information before confronting Joel, but you had no such luck. So, with a deep breath, you cleared your throat and focused on your apple before speaking.
"Joel?"
"Hm?" he replied, his brows pinching together as he carefully worked his knife around the apple in the palm of his hand.
"Can I ask you a question?" you asked as your pulse began to thrum faster in your throat.
"Sure," he said, still laser focused on his task.
"Who are the Fireflies?"
His hand slipped and he dropped the apple and knife, pulling the pad of his thumb into his mouth with a hiss. You gasped when you saw a few drops of dark red blood on the cutting board and put your knife down before grabbing a somewhat clean towel and handing it to him.
"Is it bad?" you asked, taking a step forward to try and see his injury before he wrapped it in the towel. He shook his head.
"Nah, I'll live," he said, studying the cut for a second before applying pressure again.
Still, you rushed to the linen closet to grab the first aid kit and brought it downstairs. "Rinse it under the water," you instructed him before opening the bag and rifling around. He did as he was told and watched you pluck out a bandage and a small bottle of antiseptic. "Show me," you said, and he held his hand out to you so you could examine the cut. He studied you up close while your attention was focused on his thumb, taking in every feature on your perfect face and inhaling your familiar, comforting scent while you bandaged him up. If this was what it took to get you close to him, then he was ready to injure himself every damn day.
"You're good at that," he murmured, flexing his thumb when you were all done. "Learnin' a lot from Nick?"
You packed up the first aid kit, avoiding his heated gaze. "Yeah, I guess so," you said, turning back to your apples. Ever since Joel caught the flu and you helped nurse him back to health, it felt like there was a shift in the air between you. He was more brazen with his touch, like when he wiped the flour from your cheek, and while you never asked him not to touch you, your feelings for him were complicated. Until you could figure it out, you had been trying your best to not allow yourself to get caught in his orbit.
It was proving to be more difficult than you expected.
"Why don't you go sit down, I can finish these up," you said, your eyes cast down on the apples. You felt him regard you silently for a moment before he pushed off the counter and went back to his spot at the kitchen table. It was obvious what he was doing. It was the exact opposite of what you were doing. He was trying to create a charged moment, and you were trying to avoid them.
"You didn't answer my question," you said, and his energy immediately shifted.
"Where'd you hear 'bout the Fireflies? From Ellie?" he asked, trying to keep his voice steady. You looked up at him, confused.
"Ellie? No," you replied, shaking your head. "I ran into Ben a few days after our visit. He thought you had already told me about them and seemed a little skittish when I didn't know who they were."
You watched him closely, refusing to look away as he tried to mask his anger, but you could still see it. His jaw tensed and his uninjured hand clenched into a fist in his lap while you waited for an answer.
"So?" you prodded, cocking your head to the side. His nostrils flared for a second before he took a deep breath and turned his head away.
"The Fireflies were the group the three of you had joined before comin' to Jackson," he began. You tried to focus on peeling your apples but you were working incredibly slow, not wanting to miss a single word. "You were with 'em for a couple years. They had a decent setup, kept you all safe. Better than the QZ."
"Okay," you said slowly, picking up another apple. "So it was a community like this one?"
He huffed and shook his head, "Not exactly. More like an army. They're a revolutionary group. They rose up against the military and took over QZs with the promise of givin' control back to the people, but..." he trailed off and scratched his beard. "Wasn't all that simple. They killed alotta people in the process, and in the end, civilians still suffered. Didn't end up matterin' who was in control when both sides were just as violent."
"Oh," you said softly, setting your knife down, "so I joined because of what happened to my family? Because the military killed them? And then I ended up killing innocent people, anyway?"
Joel shrugged and stood up. "Like I said, we all made decisions the best we could with what we knew at the time. You didn't know any better. Nobody did."
"Did you join them, too?" you asked.
"No," he said, pressing both palms flat against the counter as he looked at you.
"So why did Ben seem to think telling me about the Fireflies would cause a problem with us?"
His mouth pressed into a thin line and you saw the suppressed rage flicker across his eyes again. "Fireflies ain't exactly well received by most people," he said, "lotta people here had family that was hurt or killed. Innocent bystanders caught in the middle of a war they didn't start."
You swallowed nervously, apples long forgotten as you braced yourself for your next question. "Did the Fireflies hurt someone you loved?"
Joel's gaze dropped to his hands and he clenched his jaw. He wanted to tell you. He should have just fucking spit it out and told you everything, but at the last second, he chickened out.
"No."
And you may not have known him as well as you did before the accident, but you knew him well enough now to be able to tell when he was lying. You tried to hide your disappointment by picking your knife back up and getting to work.
"Are there others?" you asked him, and he lifted his head up, "other former Fireflies who live here?"
"Aside from you three? Just Tommy."
Your jaw dropped in surprise and your eyes snapped up to him once again. "Tommy?"
"Mhmm, just for a little while. You didn't know each other before Jackson," he said, anticipating your next question. "Fireflies are a big group. Spread out all over the country."
"Oh," you said softly, looking back down at your half peeled apples which were slowly becoming brown on the edges. You began peeling again, faster now, as you thought about everything he just said while he watched you carefully from the other side of the counter. You weren't sure what else to say. It felt like he was telling you the truth, but you still had a hunch he was leaving something out.
"Y'know, it's a miracle I didn't eat half that damn pie before we got here," Joel said teasingly as you walked up the porch steps to Tommy and Maria's house. "Whole house smells like Christmas now. Drove me crazy all afternoon."
You smiled and smoothed down the blue blouse you found tucked away in your closet. It wasn't a top you could envision yourself working in, it looked a bit too nice for that, so you thought dinner would be a perfect time to wear it, combined with a dark pair of jeans that were relatively clean and only slightly frayed on the bottom. At the time, you thought it was cute when Joel came downstairs with his hair slicked back and his flannel tucked into his jeans for once, but when you walked into Tommy and Maria's and found the house to be filled with four married couples from around town, you suddenly felt uncomfortable.
"I didn't realize anyone else would be here," you murmured quietly next to Joel as you slid off your coats.
"He mentioned they may invite a few others but I didn't think this many," he told you, taking your coat and hanging it up before looking around. They had two tables covered in linen pushed together in their dining room which was alight with candles and sprigs of pine and holly spread around the middle, giving the room with a warm and romantic atmosphere. You swallowed nervously and all of the sudden, the evening felt too much like a date.
"Hey, you two!" Tommy's voice rang out from the kitchen, startling you out of your reverie. "Glad you could make it," he said, tugging Joel into a hug before giving you a chaste peck on the cheek.
"Um, here," you said, holding out the pie, "didn't want to come empty handed," you explained with a little smile. Tommy's eyes lit up when he took the pan from you and gave the pie a quick sniff.
"Damn, smells good, Sugar," he told you, his cheeks already rosy from the liquor he had been working on before you arrived. He shot Joel a playful look as he headed into the kitchen, handing Maria the dessert. "Your girl can bake, Joel. Lucky man."
The tips of your ears went hot and you looked away uncomfortably before Joel could catch your eye.
"I'll get us a couple drinks," Joel said, ignoring Tommy's comment, much to your relief. "What'dya want?"
You glanced around the room and what the other women were drinking before shrugging and suggesting wine. He followed Tommy over to the living room where they kept their liquor locked up and away from their toddler, who was gleefully playing with another woman you didn't recognize. Popping your head into the kitchen, you spotted Maria all by herself working on dinner.
"Maria," you said with a smile, and she turned around with a sigh of relief.
"Hey, I'm dying here, can you help me?"
"Of course," you said, rolling up your sleeves. "What do you need?"
She put you to work right away, chopping up vegetables and dumping them into boiling water before helping her thicken a sauce she was making for some pasta. You were just about to taste test the product when Joel and Tommy joined you in the kitchen with the drink that he promised.
"Smells so fuckin' good in here," Tommy said loudly before taking a generous sip of whiskey and giving Maria a quick peck on the lips. Joel put your wine glass near you on the counter and you shot him a thankful smile before bringing a spoon up to your lips to taste the sauce. You winced and scrunched up your nose and Joel chuckled.
"It's missing something," you explained, putting the spoon back down as you examined the spices available to you while Maria was instructing Tommy on doling out the appetizers.
"Lemme try," he said, rounding the corner to stand next to you. You handed him the spoon and he held up his whiskey. "Hands are full," he told you teasingly, and you rolled your eyes with a grin before dipping the spoon back into the sauce and lifting it to his mouth. He leaned in and wrapped his lips around the spoon, closing his eyes and making a soft noise at the taste. Your knees suddenly felt weak and your face felt hot as you struggled to compose yourself before he caught you.
He opened his eyes slowly and ran his tongue over his upper lip to capture the remnants of the sauce and you had to resist the urge to swipe your thumb over his mustache to gather the rest. It made your breath hitch in your throat and you forced yourself to look away, mentally cursing your body's reaction to him.
"Lemon," he said huskily, then took a sip from his glass while still staring down at you. Your eyes drifted up to his and you saw that look again. The one that made you feel too many things at once: nervousness, excitement, pressure, confusion. So you took a deep breath and squeezed past him, having no choice but to brush up against his chest.
"You're right. It needs lemon," you said, finding one in the mess on Maria's counter and slicing it in half before squeezing it generously over the sauce. Joel leaned against the counter, one arm caging you in from behind as you worked. You tried to ignore how close he was but you could feel his breath on your skin and it was causing your pulse to race. Fortunately, Maria came to your rescue.
"How's it going?" she asked, and Joel pushed off the counter, stepping back to give you both some room.
"Good, I think the sauce is done," you told her, and after she gave it a little taste, her eyes lit up.
"So good!" she said, clearly pleased. You felt your cheeks heat up before gesturing towards Joel.
"Thank Joel. He thought of the lemon."
Maria shot Joel a smile and thanked him as he tipped his glass in her direction before taking another sip. "Happy to help, ladies," he said.
"Go enjoy the party, I got it from here," Maria told you, shooing you away.
"Are you sure? I really don't mind-"
"Yes, I'm sure! I'm just going to plate everything and we're good to go. Help yourself to some appetizers before they're all gone," she said, turning her back on you as she started pulling down serving platters.
You picked up your wine and took a sip, hoping to quell some of your nerves as you let Joel lead you into the living room where the party was in full swing. Tommy had his daughter balancing on his shoulders as he talked to a couple men, their wives at the other end of the room in the middle of a lively conversation. You chewed your lip, glancing back and forth before you took another sip and looked up at Joel.
"Guess I'll go see what's got them all worked up," you told him, nodding your head in the direction of the other women.
"You sure?" he asked with a frown. "Don't want you feelin' uncomfortable. We can stick together if y'want."
You shook your head and stepped away. "I'm fine," you told him before forcing yourself to join the other women. As you approached, you gave the women a friendly wave to catch their attention and they beckoned you towards them with open arms. They all seemed to be around your age range, give or take, and very friendly as they took the time to re-introduce themselves to you. You politely listened to them talk about their kids or jobs while you sipped your wine and nodded along. When three of the women became engrossed in a story about their children and school, you felt yourself begin to zone out. The girl standing next to you, Hannah, caught your eye and smiled.
"Do you have any kids?" you asked her, and she shook her head.
"Not yet. I don't think we're ready, you know?" she said, glancing over your shoulder at her husband. "But one day I think we will. How about you and Joel? What are your plans?" she asked, then her eyes went wide with embarrassment. "I'm so sorry. That was a dumb question, you probably don't... ah, I'm such an idiot," she said, and you laughed.
"No, you're not, it's fine," you assured her as her cheeks began to flush.
"I guess I just keep forgetting about your accident. That was so rude of me," she said, "I see you guys together all the time and it seems so normal."
You glanced over your shoulder at Joel, watching for a moment as he laughed heartily at something one of the other men said. "Yeah," you told her, turning back around, "I can see why you'd think that."
Her gaze drifted between you and Joel for a moment before she lowered her voice and took a step further away from the other women. "So you still don't remember anything, huh?"
You shook your head sadly. "Nothing. At this point, I'm not expecting anything to come back. I'm just trying to start over."
She nodded solemnly and took a sip from her wine. "How's it going with you two?" she asked, tilting her chin in Joel's direction. You sighed and rubbed your eyes. Same old questions, different person.
"Okay, I guess. He's been incredibly patient," you said, "but I think he is still holding out hope that my memory might come back and we'll just pick up right where we left off."
Hannah gave you a sympathetic look right as Maria approached with a big smile stretched across her face. "Dinner is served!" she announced to the room before bending down and stretching her arms out for her daughter.
Everyone began to scatter as couples rejoined and headed towards the dimly lit dining room. Joel appeared by your side, his hand hovering over your lower back as you waited for the other couples to take their seats.
"Havin' a good time?" he murmured, and you gave him a tight smile before nodding. Joel pulled out one of the two remaining chairs for you and you whispered your thanks when you sat down, then he pushed it back in before taking his own seat. He relaxed and stretched his arm across the back of your chair while he listened with amusement to Tommy drunkenly telling a story that had carried over from the living room.
"The table is beautiful, Maria," you told her, leaning away from Joel a bit. "It's so cozy and warm, you really outdid yourself."
She smiled as she bounced her little girl on her knee. "Thanks. We were just itching to do something, you know? We got a little cabin fever, I think."
You felt Joel's thumb brush lightly against your spine, making you shiver. But when you glanced over at him, he was still caught up in listening to Tommy and you wondered if those little gestures were intentional or if it was muscle memory.
Once everyone began to eat, Joel dropped his arm from your chair and you found yourself missing the warmth that radiated from him, confusing yourself even more. Sometimes you just wanted to hit your head against the wall and rattle your memories loose so you could stop feeling so conflicted. If you were this confused, you couldn't imagine what Joel was feeling. Although, at that moment, he seemed to be perfectly content as he stood up with Tommy to get another drink.
"Y'want any more?" Joel asked, nodding to your glass but you shook your head.
"Maybe later," you said, and when he caught your eye he gave you a quick wink before following Tommy back into the living room.
"So, how's it going at the infirmary? Still like it?" Maria asked, drawing your attention back to her.
"Yeah, I do, actually. That was a good idea, I've been meaning to thank you," you said, wiping the corners of your mouth with a napkin. "It feels good to stay busy and I'm learning a lot."
"Well, Nick always speaks so highly of you. Especially after that nasty flu worked its way through town. He said you were a godsend," Maria told you while simultaneously handing her daughter a steamed carrot.
"She was. Worked her tail off all week then had to deal with me when she got home," Joel said as he sat back down with a soft grunt. You smiled at him, grateful for the compliment.
"If he's anything like his brother when he's sick then I'm sure you've earned sainthood status," Maria said to you, making everyone laugh.
"Hey, what're you sayin' 'bout me down there?" Tommy slurred with a grin from the other end of the table. You were fairly certain Maria answered him with some sharp remark which made the table laugh again, but you couldn't exactly remember because Joel dropped his hand to rest on your knee and you suddenly couldn't think straight. Your skin felt hot under his touch, even through your jeans, and you could have sworn the whole room could hear how loudly your heart was pounding in your chest, so you anxiously grabbed your wine glass and finished the rest in one gulp, hoping it would steady your nerves.
You could have asked him to move his hand. You could have made an excuse, gotten up and used the bathroom, but you didn't. You remained perfectly still, allowing his hand to rest on your leg as you tried to focus on the conversation at the table. Because although your mind was saying one thing, your body was always reacting differently.
If you had known what would have ended up happening that night, you would have done something in that moment. Maybe if you had, it would have changed everything.
Instead, you sat there and didn't say a word. You just politely listened to everyone talk with Joel's hand still on your leg while your body and mind waged a war nobody could see.
When Maria stood to hand off her daughter to Tommy and clear the table, you joined her, finally ending Joel's grip on you. The other women stood while the men attempted to help but got shooed into the living room. When all the ladies were alone in the kitchen, Maria pulled out a jar of apple flavored moonshine that she told you all quietly she was hiding from Tommy because it was her favorite before passing it around for everyone to have a taste.
It was strong. Each of you had to stifle your coughs into your hands, which erupted into giggles and eventually caught the attention of the men, so you all did your best to distract them after they curiously poked their heads into the kitchen so Maria could hide the jar once again.
In retrospect, the alcohol didn't do you any favors. Your head was swimming a little by the time dessert was served and you found yourself inadvertently leaning into Joel's shoulder as everyone complimented your pie and he watched you adoringly while you waved off the praise.
The food was amazing, but combined with the drinks, you found your eyelids growing heavy as the party moved back into the living room and Maria took her daughter to bed.
"I think I'm going to get some air," you told Joel while everyone else got comfortable.
"You alright?" he asked, examining your face closely. You nodded.
"Just getting tired," you explained as you took a step towards the door, but he immediately put his glass down.
"Why didn't you say so? We can go home."
"No, it's okay-"
"You've been workin' so hard lately. You need your rest. Go get your things and I'll tell Tommy we're headin' out," he said, refusing to hear another word. And as much as you didn't want to tear him away from the party, you had to agree with him. The past couple weeks were physically draining and it definitely seemed like the exhaustion was catching up with you.
Once Joel announced your departure and everybody bid you good night, you each grabbed your coats and slid on your boots before heading outside. The brisk night air was a shock to the system and it helped wake you up a bit on the walk home. Joel wrapped his arm around your waist as you walked, holding you close to him, enveloping you with his warmth and when you inevitably reflected on that night, you would remember that moment as one on a long list of ways you were sending him mixed signals because you didn't pull away. Because as confused as you were about your feelings for him, you couldn't deny the attraction you harbored. And maybe it was partially your fault for not being stronger because you knew, you fucking knew Joel's feelings for you were far deeper than yours that night, and yet you still didn't step away.
When you arrived home and Joel fumbled clumsily with the door, you giggled, making him grin and his eyes light up at the sound before finally shoving the door open and flicking on a light. You shrugged off your coat and kicked off your boots with a sigh, the faint smell of apple pie still lingering in the air. You were happy to be in the comfort of your own home and eager to throw on your pajamas, but Joel led you into the kitchen first and poured you some water. You couldn't help but smile at how reminiscent it was from when he was sick and you did the same thing for him, so you took it and made sure to drink the whole thing while he watched with a pleased expression on his face.
"Did I tell you how beautiful you looked tonight?"
The glass was still pressed against your mouth, the last drops of water just swallowed, and you froze. Slowly, you lowered the glass to the counter and shook your head, unable to look away from his heated stare.
"Well, you did. Lit up the whole place. Prettier than all the other women," he said, fighting to remain still and not pull you into his arms. But he was losing that battle.
"Thank you," you said softly, forcing yourself to look away. It didn't deter him.
"I mean it. Couldn't stop thinkin' 'bout you. Talkin' 'bout you," he said, watching your face heat up as he blinked slowly. "Lookin' at you," he added after a quiet moment, and you laughed softly while you crossed your arms protectively over your chest.
"Joel..." you began, not even sure what you planned to say so you opted for staring blankly out the window just so you wouldn't have to look him in the eye.
"What, baby?" he murmured, taking a bold step forward and pinching your chin with his fingers. You dragged your gaze back up to him just to find his dark brown eyes all wide and filled with hope and tenderness as he stared down at you, his gaze flicking from your eyes to your lips, clearly displaying his intention but you still didn't step away. Your body wouldn't let you move.
"We're both drunk," you told him, trying to remain rational. Trying to stay clear-headed.
"Not that drunk," he quickly countered, his eyes still roaming your face, his fingers still pressing into your chin and you could feel your heart flutter wildly. Why on earth couldn't your mind catch up with your body?
You sighed, partially from the exhaustion, partially from the inability to properly express yourself but he took it to mean something else. He heard your sigh and thought you were finally giving in. That you were finally going to let him kiss you. Because why else wouldn't you have pulled away?
He leaned forward, his eyes slid shut, and although you should have known it was coming, it still surprised you. Your eyes stayed open wide as he inched towards you and finally at the very last second, you tilted your face to the side, causing him to press his lips against your cheek instead.
You felt his reaction before you could see it. His lips immediately tensed against your skin and his breathing stalled. Then his hand dropped from your chin and he leaned back, eyes no longer warm and inviting.
You tightly pressed your lips together in shame. "Joel, I'm sorry-"
"Don't be," he said quickly, cutting you off and backing away.
The hurt was evident across his face, although he tried to hide it by averting his gaze.
"I just don't think I'm there yet," you said after a long, tense moment. "I'm trying-"
"Yeah, I know," he replied harshly, turning on his heel and marching out of the kitchen. "I know you're tryin' to force yourself to love me. It's gotta be real hard, I get it," he spat, his voice so cold it made you shudder as he shoved his boots back on.
You choked back a sob as you watched him grab his coat.
"Where are you going?"
"Don't know," was all he said before flinging the door open and storming out, leaving you all alone in the entryway with tears slowly streaking down your cheeks.
What an absolute fucking idiot he was.
What was he thinking? That you would magically find him attractive again? Love him again? That he was worthy of your time and care and attention? After everything he did?
You didn't know, of course, but what else could it be, other than fate? Or karma? Or whatever it was, coming back and erasing all your memories of him to set things right? Because did he ever really deserve you in the first place?
No, definitely not. Not after everything he did.
His legs carried him blindly to the Tipsy Bison. It was a quiet night, and maybe had he been in the right frame of mind, he would have been surprised. Most of the town was cooped up the past couple weeks, under normal circumstances he would have thought it would be busier, but at that moment in time, he didn't care. He only cared about one thing: he needed to forget.
He motioned for Seth and he nodded in acknowledgment before pouring him his usual whiskey and setting it down. Joel snatched it up and immediately downed it with a wince before pushing the empty glass towards Seth.
"Another, please," he muttered before burying his face in his hands with a groan. Seth eyed him suspiciously before pouring his second drink and setting it back down on the bar.
Joel let the glass sit there a few minutes while he stewed in his anger. He wanted to blame you, but he couldn't. Not really. He knew it wasn't your fault but, fuck, he just wanted you back. He was so goddamn lonely that it made his chest hurt. He rubbed it absentmindedly before picking up his glass and forcing himself to take a slow sip. He had already drank too much at Tommy's and if he didn't want to wake up with a massive hangover, he had to slow down.
"Hey, cowboy," a familiar, flirty voice suddenly said from beside him. He tilted his head to the side and had to fight the urge to roll his eyes.
"Angie."
She smirked and pulled up a tall barstool, scooting her way up with a little grunt that made his stomach clench as he watched her maneuver in her tight jeans.
"What's got you so blue?" she purred as she took a sip from her drink and crossed her legs, her foot coming dangerously close to touching his calf.
"Who said I was blue?" he asked gruffly before taking another swig of whiskey.
She laughed softly and tossed her hair over her shoulder. "Kind of hard to miss," she said, resting her chin in her palm as she looked at him expectantly.
His eyebrows furrowed at her but she noticed the way the corner of his mouth twitched and she bit her lip playfully.
"C'mon, what's the matter? You can tell me, baby," she cooed, and he squeezed his eyes shut and shook his head.
"Don't call me that."
Angie pouted and leaned closer, her breath tickling his ear when she whispered, "Oh, that's right. How could I forget? You prefer daddy."
"Knock it off," he growled, turning away from her and ignoring the stirring below his waist, but it wouldn't be that easy. It never was.
She rested her delicate hand on his forearm and his muscles twitched, but he didn't move. As much as he hated to admit it, he missed being touched. And in that moment, any touch would do. She smiled and slid her hand up his arm slowly, and he let her, his eyes fixed somewhere in the opposite direction as he tried with all his might to ignore it, to fight it, to stand up and fucking leave, but he couldn't do it.
"So tense," she murmured in his ear, and his eyes fluttered shut. "I can help with that, y'know." Her hand dropped from his shoulder to his lap and had Joel's eyes been open, he would have seen Seth's eyes widen in surprise before looking away. "We're real good at it, remember?" she continued, her fingers inching towards the seam of his jeans. But before she could reach between his legs, his hand grabbed her wrist.
"Stop it," he said weakly, forcing his eyes open to glare at her, but she just smiled sweetly at him and pulled her hand back.
"I need to use the restroom," she said, her voice sultry. "You remember where the ladies' room is, right?" she asked with a wink before sliding off the stool and swinging her hips as she strolled down the hall towards the bathroom. He groaned and rubbed his face roughly.
He wasn't sure how it happened. He wanted to blame the whiskey, he wanted to blame you, but at the end of the day it was all on him when he found himself shoving open the door to the women's room and crowding Angie against the sink, his mouth crashing down on hers hungrily.
It was only one tiny minute of weakness. When he realized his mistake, when he remembered her lips weren't anything compared to yours, when her noises were not the noises he wanted to hear, her touch not the touch he craved, he immediately stopped kissing her, pulling back and cursing under his breath.
Angie looked at him, her eyes dark and her cheeks flushed, then took a step forward but he held up his hand.
"No," he said a bit too loudly, the whiskey making his head swim as he stumbled backwards towards the door. She rolled her eyes and grinned.
"C'mon, Joel. When are you going to realize she's not coming back? You need to move on," Angie said sweetly. Too sweetly. "You deserve to be happy," she added, and he frowned when the enormity of what he had done dawned on him through his drunken haze.
"Stay away from me," he warned her, reaching for the door and yanking it open.
"Fine. But just remember: you followed me in here!" she shouted after him as he disappeared down the hall. He snatched his coat from his barstool and jogged towards the exit.
He had to get home.
The carpet should have been worn to the floorboards by the time Joel finally came back. You had been pacing around the living room, chewing on your fingernails nervously as you replayed the entire evening in your head. The guilt was fucking suffocating you. You couldn't help but feel like you were partially to blame, but you would have broken his heart if you let him kiss you without fully understanding how you felt first, and he didn't deserve that. Maybe once he cooled down, he would understand.
When you heard his slow, heavy footsteps walking up the porch stairs, your heart leapt into your throat. The door creaked open slowly, as if he expected you to be asleep and he was trying to be quiet, but when he closed the door and saw you standing in the middle of the living room, your arms wrapped around yourself, his face contorted into a grimace.
"You're still up," he said, voice a little raspy as he hung up his coat.
"Joel, I'm so sorry," you began, "I'm just so confused. I'm still trying to work out my feelings but I don't want to rush into something and risk hurting you."
He swallowed and hung his head in shame, unable to look at you.
"Please don't apologize," he whispered, but you kept going.
"Of course I'm going to apologize. I sent you mixed signals and I ended up hurting you anyway."
"I did somethin'," he blurted out, and you froze mid-sentence, waiting for him to elaborate. Silence filled the room, your eyes drifted around aimlessly before you sunk down onto the edge of the couch and tucked your hands under your thighs.
"What did you do?" you asked, your voice wavering when you realized he still hadn't looked you in the eye.
He took a steadying breath and propped his hands on his hips, his face still angled shamefully towards the floor. "I kissed someone else."
His words hung heavy in the air, your deep, ragged breaths the only sound filling the room as your tired mind tried to make sense of what he just said.
"What?" you finally asked, voice deathly quiet. He forced himself to look at you now, his dark eyes brimming with tears.
"It was a mistake-" he began, voice thick with emotion, tongue heavy and clumsy between his teeth, but you stopped him.
"Just now?" you asked incredulously, your stomach turning sour. Fighting the nausea back down with a harsh swallow, you spoke again. "You tried to kiss me, I shot you down and you just... went out and found someone else?"
"That's not what I left to do, it just happened-"
"Who?" you asked, your gaze stony as you continued to stare at him, anguish and regret flickering across his face.
"Does it matter?" he tried weakly, softly, but it just pissed you off even more.
"Yes," you hissed, slowly standing back up on now shaky legs. "Who, Joel?"
His throat bobbed and he shifted his weight and when he mumbled Angie's name, you saw red.
"Are you fucking kidding me?" you whispered, quickly closing the gap between you and shoving him hard against the chest, causing him to stumble back in shock. When he looked you in the eyes, all glassy and cold and distraught, his blood felt like ice in his veins.
He was losing you.
"Please, lemme just explain-"
"What could you possibly have to say?!" you exclaimed, your body growing hot with rage. Hands shaking so badly you had to cross your arms to hide the tremor. "I was taking too long to fuck you so you went out and found a sure thing?"
"I didn't fuck her, but I could've!" he yelled back, an angry vein popping out of his neck at his sudden outburst. Your eyes went wide and you took a step back in surprise. He didn't know why he was yelling. He knew it wouldn't help, but he just snapped. "I never once pressured you to sleep with me! I gave you your space an-and respected your boundaries," he was flailing now, his thoughts scattered as he desperately tried to make sense. "But I'm a human fuckin' being and I got drunk and I was lonely and I made a fuckin' mistake! And I'm sorry, alright?!"
You scoffed and rolled your eyes. "You're lonely," you repeated, the words like poison on your tongue, and he frowned. "What about me? I'm lonely, too! You know what the first question is out of everyone's mouth ever since my accident?" you asked, glaring up at him, anger rolling off both your bodies. "They ask me how you're doing. You! Like this was some tragedy that only happened to you! But I lost fucking everything in the blink of an eye!" Tears began to burn the backs of your eyes now but you pushed on. "My world literally turned upside down in an instant and everyone just kept waiting for me to get with the program, including you!"
"That's not true," he said, shaking his head angrily, "I never pressured you to do anythin'!"
"It's the way you look at me!" you cried, wiping the tears from your cheeks. "You don't even realize you're doing it but you keep looking at me, expecting to find the woman you fell in love with but she's gone, Joel!"
You both fell silent, staring at one another, shoulders heaving as you each sat with the weight of your words.
"I don't care," he finally said, lowering his voice. "I still love you. I told you that first day. What we got is rare and special and I'm not givin' up on us."
"Then how could you go kiss someone else the first time there's a bump in the road?" you asked, tone hurt and dejected, then you turned and headed up the stairs.
"I told you, it was a mistake," he pleaded, following you. "I'm so sorry... wait, what're you doin'?" he asked when he realized he had followed you into your room. You were snatching clothes from the drawers and tossing them onto your bed, and that's when he really began to panic.
"I can't stay here," you said, disappearing into the bathroom. His vision narrowed and his legs became weak as fear flooded his veins.
"No," he whispered, but you didn't hear him. You were busy gathering a few toiletries from the bathroom and tossing them on the bed along with your clothes, but when you walked past him to get a bag, he grabbed your arm.
"Don't do this," he begged. You yanked your arm out of his grip and stepped back, glaring at him and he realized in that moment he would rather have you there screaming at him for the rest of the night than not have you there at all, so he kept talking. He kept pushing.
"Y'know, for someone who says she doesn't have feelin's for me, you sure seem to be pretty pissed off," he glowered, and your eyes widened. That's it, he thought, let me have it. "If you don't want me, if you don't give a shit 'bout me, then what the hell does it matter if someone else does?"
You gasped, his words like a punch to the gut. Like a blade to your heart. Without thinking, your arm swung back and your palm cracked loudly against his cheek, stunning you both into silence.
He wanted to rub the spot, to help soothe the pain with the tips of his fingers, but he resisted. Instead, he let his cheek redden so you were forced to see what you did.
"You think I don't give a shit about you?" you seethed once you found your voice, palm stinging at your side, eyes flickering between his eyes and his cheek.
"Sure seems that way," he countered, and your jaw clenched angrily as the next round of tears began to well up.
"What the fuck is wrong with you?" you yelled, your hands balling into fists at your sides. "How dare you. You made me give a shit about you, you asshole!"
You shoved past him and headed down the hall to the spare room in search of a duffel bag, but Joel was hot on your trail. If he let you leave, he would never get you back.
"The hell does that even mean?"
You whipped around, making him stumble backwards, your eyes wild and bloodshot. "You told me you would make me fall in love with you again! This whole time we've been getting to know each other, building up our relationship and you think after all that, after everything we've shared, that I don't give a shit about you?"
"Well-" he began, but you cut him off.
"I took care of you when you were sick. I sat next to your bed for a full week, waiting for you to fall asleep, making sure you had everything you needed," you said, your voice growing quiet as hot tears spilled down your cheeks. "You told me about your daughter. I told you about my brother," you whimpered, your voice cracking on the last word. Joel's face fell when he finally realized how broken you were, the full weight of his actions realized. "How could you say that to me?" you sobbed, burying your face in your hands, your cheeks hot and wet in your palms. Your head ached. Your heart ached. You needed this to end.
"Oh, god, I'm so sorry, I didn't mean it," he told you, stepping forward and pulling you into his arms. You only let yourself melt against his broad chest for a moment before you sniffled and pushed him away. Turning around, you snatched the bag from the ground and stormed past him.
"Tell me how to fix it," he pleaded as he followed you back into your room.
"You can't."
His head was pounding, throat scratchy and dry as he watched you pack from the doorway, his chest tightening with each article of clothing that passed through your hands.
"Please. Stay. I-I-I won't even talk to you if that's what you want, just please stay."
You paused, your eyes squeezing shut as you silently cried over your bag. "You want me to stay, Joel?" you asked, voice trembling, and even though weren't looking, he nodded.
"I'll do anythin'," he said earnestly, and you opened your eyes. Reaching for your journal, you flipped it open to a well worn page and tossed it on the bed. He frowned at it, confused, but stepped forward and picked it up.
"Then tell me what you lied about."
His eyes scanned the page, reading the four words over and over. Joel lied to me. No context, but he didn't need any. He knew.
You could see the conflict in his face as he tried to figure out a way around it.
"The truth. Or I'm gone," you said firmly, and when his eyes flicked up to yours, you saw fear.
He slowly turned around, the journal held delicately in his massive hands, as he sat down onto the edge of your mattress.
"Okay."
The shock made your tears slow to a stop.
"Okay?"
"Yeah, okay," he repeated, his tone somber as he stared down at your journal in his lap. "What's the difference now, anyway? You already hate me."
I don't hate you, you thought, but you remained silent.
"If I tell you, you promise not to leave?" he clarified, and you thought about it for a moment. What if it was something really bad? But you knew you wouldn't get the truth out of him any other way, so you nodded. You figured if you still left and ended up becoming a liar, then at least you would be even.
"I told you 'bout the Fireflies," he began, and you got the feeling the story was going to be long so you sat down on the bed.
"Yes."
"You, Ben 'n Lisa were all part of a group out in Salt Lake City," he said, his gaze pinned on the journal. "In a hospital. Doin' research."
"Research? I don't know anything about-"
"You weren't doin' the research. The three of you were just guards. Patrolmen. There were doctors there, and they were lookin' for a cure," he continued, then took a deep breath before lifting his chin and staring at a fixed point on your wall.
"Did they find one?" you asked, remembering that first day when Joel told you about the outbreak. You had asked him at the time if there was cure and he said no. That couldn't be the lie, could it?
"Well, they were close," he said, his brow pinching together. "This next part is somethin' that's gotta stay in this house, y'hear me?" he asked, finally turning to look at you. "Y'gotta promise me that no matter what you end up thinkin' of me, you can't tell anyone 'bout this part."
You didn't want to make that promise. Why would you, after everything he had put you through? But, still, you found yourself nodding slowly, then his next sentence knocked all the air from your lungs.
"Ellie's immune."
Your lips slowly parted as the shock coursed through you, your eyes slowly drifting down to the comforter. Your mind was blank except for Ellie's immune, Ellie's immune playing on a constant loop.
"It's why you didn't write anythin' else, I reckon," he explained, holding up your journal. "Didn't want anyone to find it."
You slowly began to put the pieces together. A research hospital. Ellie's immunity. They were close to a cure.
"The Fireflies thought they could use Ellie to create a vaccine," he said after a long pause. "And I took her to 'em. Took her right into the lion's den," he said with a dry chuckle. "Didn't realize til after they took her that they would've had to... kill her to get what they needed."
Your eyes darted up to meet his again as you listened, entranced.
"Nobody knows, okay?" he said, his voice wavering a bit. "Only Tommy. No one else can know. Her life depends on it, d'you understand?"
You nodded, still unable to find your voice, so he continued.
"When I realized what they were doin', that they would have to kill her, I just..." he trailed off and scratched his chin, looking away, eyes distant. "I lost it. It's the only way to describe it."
"W-what do you mean?" you asked, your voice barely a whisper.
"I killed alotta people," he said, voice cold and detatched, "alotta fuckin' people. Whoever got in my way, I just... didn't think twice. 'Til you."
You inhaled sharply, almost forgetting you were somewhere in that hospital.
"Me?" you squeaked.
"You didn't see my face," he said, his voice beginning to shake. "None of you did. The three of you were together. You surrendered. Had you face down on the ground with your hands behind your head. Told me you were plannin' on ditchin' the Fireflies anyway. That you wouldn't come after me." His hand trembled in his lap and he made a fist.
"You weren't the first ones to say that to me, but you were the first ones I let live."
You pressed your palms into your face, trying to quell the ache behind your eyes as you rocked gently back and forth on the bed, heart thundering in your chest, blooding pumping too fast. The exhaustion was too much. You could hardly make sense of what he was saying.
"You almost killed me," you said, more of a statement than a question, your voice muffled through your hands.
"Yeah." He watched you carefully, trying to read you, desperately searching for some small glimmer of hope underneath all your rage and confusion.
"Then what?" you forced yourself to ask, pinching the bridge of your nose.
He ticked his jaw to the side and looked away.
"Then... Ellie 'n me came here. Started over. Tried to forget," he sniffed, pulling at a loose string on his shirt. "Then the three of you showed up couple months later. Scared the fuckin' shit outta me, but none of you seemed to recognize me."
"Because we never saw you," you said, and he nodded.
"I didn't speak to you for over a month. I was so scared you'd recognize my voice or somethin', but I just couldn't stay away from you," he said, his eyes softening now. "Then that night at the bar happened. When you came up to me and-"
"Yeah, I remember what you told me," you replied, not eager to relive that story at the moment.
"Then the rest is history. We started messin' around. You didn't know who I was for a few months, then I finally told you."
"After you were already fucking me," you said coldly, and he winced.
"After I fell in love with you."
You sat back and rubbed your eyes. You had so many questions. What was your reaction when you first learned who he was? If you stuck around, you must have seen something in Joel that made you feel safe. Why did he spare you? Was it only because you couldn't identify him? And how much did Ellie know?
"Please say somethin'," he begged after a few tense, quiet minutes.
"What do you want me to say?" you asked him, your shoulders sagging forward, limbs too heavy. "You want me to forgive you? You want me to say I understand?" He shook his head but you kept talking.
"You spared my life just to break my heart."
He turned away from you as his face crumpled. "I'm gonna fix it," he said, his throat tight and voice thick as he fought off the tears that were threatening to spill down his face. "I'm gonna make it right, if you just-"
"Can you go, please?" you asked quietly, "I have nothing else to say and I'm fucking tired."
He looked over at you but you refused to look up, your puffy eyes fixed blankly on the floor. His gaze drifted to the bag and clothes littering your bed and he asked, "Are you stayin'?"
You didn't answer. You just slowly stood up and flung your comforter back, some of your clothes falling into a heap on the floor but you didn't care as you crawled into bed and turned your back to him.
Begrudgingly, he stood. His eyes flicked around your room nervously, his fingers fidgeting at his sides while he chewed on the inside of his cheek, struggling to come up with the right words to say.
"Go!" you sobbed from underneath your blankets, hiding from him the tears that were soaking your sheets.
So, he left. Not because he wanted to, but because he caused you enough agony for one night, and as much as he wanted to stay and beg on his knees for forgiveness, it would be the selfish thing to do. Instead, he went to his bed and stared at the ceiling, barely sleeping the entire night because his body jerked awake at every little creak the old house made, wondering when he woke up, if you would be gone for good.

I loved writing my first dad Jay fic, so making an add-on to it actually makes me really happy, but I hope you enjoy it. happy father's day to those who celebrate and to those who don't well... I'm your daddy now hehe
The warm summer sun was shining through the small kitchen window above the sink as you and Minji stood at the counter with mixed cake batter. The young girl was standing on her little stool next to you, trying to crack an egg, but she couldn't, which caused her to start getting frustrated. She just wanted to help you bake a cake for Jay for Father’s Day, but she had been struggling to crack the same egg for a few minutes, and you didn’t want to interrupt her. However, when Minji goes to throw it down, you intervene and take the egg from her little hands.
“You can’t throw the egg, love,” You laugh softly, cracking the egg and dumping the inside contents into the bowl with the other ingredients.
Minji pouts as she watches you mix the batter, her hands holding onto the countertop. She is amazed by how easy it was for you to crack the other egg before putting it into the bowl as well.
“Why is it so hard for me to crack the egg, mama?” She asked, eyes tearing away from the bowl to look up at you as a smile tugged on the corner of your lips. Even after two years of her calling you that it never ceased to make you smile, loving to hear the words fall from her lips.
You dusted your hands off with a rag before turning to face the little girl. Starting to bend down, you realized that you couldn’t go down as far as you once used to with the baby bump that had formed on your stomach. Getting comfortable with one hand gripping the countertop edge, you opened your mouth to speak to the little girl, but she was quick to interrupt, panic on her face.
“No, mama, stand up. You’re going to squish, sissy!” She exclaimed, her eyes moving from your face down to your swollen belly. You couldn’t help but laugh at how worried she was.
“Min, the baby is okay, I promise.” You smile at her softly before dusting some of the flour off of her shirt. Now, how about I finish up with the cake so we can get it in the oven? Then we can decorate it while I start dinner, okay?” A smile grew on the little girl’s face as she nodded her head, excited to make the cake look pretty for her daddy.
Patting her head softly, you pull yourself back to your feet with a huff, grab the bowl, and whisk to finish mixing. Minji watched with intrigued eyes, not saying much as you made sure there weren’t any clumps left in the batter before grabbing the cake pan.
Spray the pan with cooking spray to make sure the cake won’t stick to the sides when you try to get it out. Then grab the bowl and start pouring the batter inside. Once all of the batter was scraped out of the bowl, reach over Minji and sit it inside the sink, then grab the cake pan.
“Stay right here, Min, I don’t want you to get burnt.” You instruct the young girl, and she tilts her head quizzically before muttering a small ‘Okay, mama.’ After making sure that she was going to stay in her spot, you walk over to the preheated oven and open the door before sliding the pan in. When it was fully inside, you closed the door and set the timer. Dusting your hands off once more you looked back at Minji who was still watching you with curious eyes, you looked at the clock.
Jay shouldn’t be home until later in the evening, so the two of you should have more than enough time to decorate the cake and finish cooking dinner before he returns.
After the cake was done baking in the oven and fully cooled off you and Minji started to decorate it. You covered the entirety of the cake in frosting before grabbing a variety of sprinkles, decorative icing, and edible flowers to lay them before Minji so she could decorate.
“Alright, sweets, figure out what you wanna use while I finish off the frosting.” You pat down a few strands of her hair before turning back to the cake and grabbing the spatula.
Minji leans down until her chin rests on the counter, watching as you smooth out the frosting. Her eyes then fall onto your belly, and a small pout forms on her lips.
“How much longer is sissy going to be in there?” Minji asks as she lightly pokes your belly, resulting in a soft kick from the baby that was growing inside of your womb. You smile softly, setting the spatula down to cup the small girl’s face, brushing some stray frosting off of her face with your thumb.
“She still has a few more months until she gets here, Min,” you tell her with a smile, moving your hand from her face but not looking away.
Minji’s bottom lip jutted out, “Why can’t she come sooner?”
“Well, if she were to come now, she would be really sick, and we wouldn’t want that now, would we?” You watched with a fond gleam in your eyes as the little girl shook her head violently, slight panic forming in her eyes.
“No! I want her to be healthy, so I can play with her.” She exclaims, causing you to laugh softly, shaking your head. You then tell her that she will have to wait just a little bit longer after she’s born to play, which results in the young child sighing before yet another pout forms on her lips.
The both of you then go back to decorating the cake, talking about anything the girl could think of or humming a tune that has been stuck in your head.
However, after a few moments of not hearing a peep from Minji you looked over at her, seeing a troubled look on her face. Stopping what you were doing so you could turn all of your attention to her, “What’s wrong, bug?”
The moment that Minji turned her head, allowing her teary eyes to meet yours. Seeing the tears that were pooling along her waterline made your heart lurch. You reach out to cup her small cheek in your palm, thumb wiping a stray tear that had broken free.
“Are you and Daddy going to forget about me when sissy gets here?” Her voice shook as her bottom lip trembled, making your heart hurt. The last thing you wanted was for her to feel like you or Jay would forget about her when the baby got here.
“Aww baby,” You cooed softly, crouching down once more despite the discomfort so you were at eye level with her. Reaching out, you tuck a strand of her hair behind her ear, looking at her with such fondness, “We’re not going to forget about you, even after the baby gets here.” You offer her a small smile, tilting your head slightly. “She’s going to need a lot of attention, but your dad and I will never forget about you, no matter what.”
Minji sniffles and wipes her face with the back of her hand before holding out her other hand, her tiny pinky sticking up. " You promise?” she asks.
You couldn’t help but laugh softly as you wrapped your own pinky around her’s, “I promise.” The both of you seal the word as the pads of your thumbs meet.
Unbeknownst to the both of you Jay stood in the doorway of the kitchen, arms crossed loosely over his chest as he watched the two of you go back to decorating the cake. His eyes gleamed with adoration that if anyone had been looking in from the outside they would say that he quite literally had stars shining in his eyes. One would say that he was lovesick, the other would say he was a fool, but Jay didn’t care. If loving his fiance and children made him a love-sick fool, then so be it.
He watched the two of you discuss where to put the small edible flowers on the cake for a few more moments until he finally pushed himself off of the door frame. Walking further into the room, he watched his footsteps so the floorboards wouldn’t make too much noise.
“How are my favorite girls?” His voice filled the room, causing both you and Minji to jump. Turning around quickly, with your hand over your heart, you looked at Jay with wide eyes. He wasn’t supposed to be home until later.
Minji looks over at her dad with a huge smile on her lips before jumping from the stool, almost tripping, scaring the life out of you and Jay. However, she catches herself before making a beeline for Jay.
“Daddy!” She screamed as she ran into Jay’s awaiting arms, wrapping her arms tightly around Jay’s neck as he wrapped his around her smaller body. When he picked her up, Minji started to giggle, burying her face in Jay’s neck.
“How was your day princess?” Jay asked the small girl as she pulled away to look at him with wide, twinkling eyes. She starts to tell him about all of the stuff that you and her had been doing all day causing a smile to spread on your lips, watching the two of them. “Have you been listening to your mama?” Jay pokes her belly causing Minji to burst out in a fit of giggles before nodding her head and looking over at you just as you started to walk towards them.
A silly smile spread on Jay’s lips as he watched you waddle over to the two of them, your hand lying softly on the top of your baby bump. It still baffles him to this day that you have given him a second chance, even if it has been three years since then. Now he’ll get to call you his wife soon and you’re carrying his child. He will probably forever wonder whether or not this was all some dream, but if it was, he hoped it was one that he would never wake up from.
“She’s been good, she’s always good, Jay.” You smile softly as he wraps his arm around your waist the moment you’re within arm's reach.
“I’m just worried about leaving her alone with you right now,” He tells you, pressing a soft kiss to the side of your head as you wrap your arm around his torso. You rolled your eyes playfully before looking up to meet his gaze.
“I’m seven months pregnant, Jay, not handicapped.”
“I know, but I’m still gonna worry regardless.” He stared down at you, taking in your features. The way your hair that was pulled back into a messy bun was starting to come undone resulting in a few stray pieces falling and framing your face. The small specks of frosting that somehow got onto your cheeks, then your pretty pink lips that were coated in a thin layer of lip gloss. Noticing his gaze, you reached up to move a strand of hair that had fallen out of place, snapping him out of his little trance. Smiling softly, he leans down to kiss the top of your head once more.
Minji started poking his shoulder, trying to gain his attention, “Daddy, guess what?” Jay turned his attention back to his daughter as she smiled widely at him, her small body shaking in excitement. “We made a cake for you!” She exclaimed, pointing over at the unfinished cake that still sat on the counter.
Smiling, you looked over at her before moving to meet Jay’s gaze once more as he looked over. “It’s not done yet; we weren’t expecting you to be back so soon.”
“Ah well,” Jay chuckled, tightening his hold on the both of you, “I managed to get boss to let me off early so I could spend the rest of the day with my favorite girls.”
His words made your heart twist. Maybe it was the pregnancy hormones, but just hearing how he would much rather spend every waking second of the day with you and Minji made you realize that you truly had picked the best man alive.
Minji wiggles her way out of Jay’s arms before grabbing his hand and dragging him over to where the cake was, leaving you to stand there and watch with a fond smile. The young girl went on to explain everything about what the cake looked like and how she wanted to decorate it for him. She then looked up at him, her face as bright as the sun saying that she hopes that he likes it when she finishes it.
“I love it already, Min.” He promised, patting the top of her head before she climbed back onto her stool to finish decorating.
You watch for a moment long before turning and walking over to the stove to finish cooking dinner. Noticing movement from the corner of his eye Jay looks over at you, seeing you pick up the ladle, your other hand propped on your hip.
With one last pat to his daughter's head, he makes his way over to you, grabbing the ladle from your hand, causing you to look up at him.
“I’ve got it, bug; you should help Min finish the cake.” He looked at you with a soft smile, but you knew that arguing with him would just be useless, so you just shook your head, a smile pulling on the corner of your lips. Moving out of the way you allow him to take your previous stance, but you don’t move very far, eyes still on Jay, watching as he gets back into his element.
Seeing that you hadn’t gone anywhere and still stood in the same place Jay turned his head slightly before reaching a hand out to lay his palm flat on your swollen belly. His thumb rubs your skin soothingly through the fabric of your shirt as you move your hand to lay it on top of his, the light gleaming off of the diamond that laid on your ring finger.
Pulling your attention away from your hands, you let your eyes trail up until they met his, searching his orbs as the light reflected off of them. You had always loved his eyes. They always seemed dark at first glance, but upon closer inspection, they were a shade of your favorite chocolate, a beautiful color in your eyes.
“Thank you.” Jay breaks the silence; however, his words just leave you staring at him confused. You open your lips, asking what he meant and he just smiles sweetly, his gaze full of such love that it leaves you weak in the knees. “I am beyond thankful for you, bug; you’re always there for Minji and me. Thankful for everything that you have done for us. And I will forever be thankful that you gave me another chance because now I have the family that I’ve always thought about.”
You bit the inside of your cheek, hoping to keep the tears that had pooled in your eyes at bay. His words made your heart flutter, beating against your ribs in such a manner that you were sure that your face was red. Your hand moved faster than your brain, smacking his chest softly with a playful glare adorning your face.
“Stop trying to make me cry, asshole.” You grumbled lowly, not wanting Minji to hear you.
Jay couldn’t help but laugh before laying the ladle down so he could turn and engulf your smaller body in his arm, pulling you as close as he could with your pregnant belly in the way.
He presses a kiss to your forehead with a smile, “I’m sorry, love.”
Just then, a loud crash was heard throughout the whole kitchen, causing you to jump in Jay’s arms. Small curses left your lips, causing him to chuckle. Before the two of you looked over at the little girl, who was looking down at the fallen bowl with wide eyes, the spatula not too far from it. There were small specks of frosting all over her face and a few bigger splotches around her mouth and chin.
“Whoops.” As soon as the word fell from Minji’s lips, both you and Jay burst out laughing, the little girl not too far behind you.
The two of you then separated, moving towards Minji to help clean her up. “I’ve got her,” you told Jay. He was quick to grab your upper arm, ready to protest, but you turned and pressed the pads of your fingers to his lips, shushing him. "You just cook dinner; I’ve got her.”
Jay grabbed your wrist, pulling your fingers away from his mouth before placing a gentle kiss on the skin of your palm, muttering a small ‘okay’ before releasing his hold.
He watches as you walk over to the sink to grab a clean rag from the drawer next to it before wetting it with warm water. You then turn to the little girl as she tilts her face towards you, already knowing what was coming.
“So, did you like the frosting?” You teased her, gently wiping the leftover frosting from her cheeks.
Minji giggled but nodded her head nonetheless, “I did! It was really sweet, though.” The girl exclaimed with a tight-lipped smile as you wiped down her chin.
Once her face was completely wiped off, you moved to pick up the bowl off the ground, but Minji was quick to hop off the stool, shouting that she’d got it. A sweet, wide smile spread on your lips as you watched her scoop up the bowl and spatula in her arms before turning and handing them to you.
Jay watched from the side with an adoring gleam in his eyes, knowing that Minji was already going to be a great big sister despite the almost six year difference.
“Thank you, love.” You thanked the child as you took the dishes from her outstretched arms and placed them in the sink to wash later.
The two of you then go back to decorating the cake—well, more like Minji is decorating it, and you’re just there to supervise so she doesn't make too big of a mess while Jay finishes dinner. The only sound filling the comfortable space around the three of you was the soft tunes that Jay was humming.
~
After dinner was done Jay gathered all of the dishes, ignoring your protests for him to let you do it. Realizing you weren’t going to win this fight, you just opted to help him clean them, which even took a bit of convincing. Finally giving in, Jay allowed you to dry the dishes off before placing them back in the cabinet. Even Minji found a way to help by standing next to Jay and pointing out all of the spots that he missed on some of the dishes, causing you to laugh softly as Jay faked a shocked expression every time.
He’d do anything if it meant that a smile would fall on either of his girls' faces.
Once the dishes were finally done, Minji started to hop around the dining table with a huge smile on her face. She then came to a halt in front of you, grabbing your hand and looking up to meet your awaiting eyes.
“Can we get the cake and presents out now?” she asked hurriedly, gently swinging your arm, causing you to chuckle and nod. However, Jay looked at you with wide, shocked eyes.
“You didn’t have to get me anything; being with the three of you is more than enough.”
You roll your eyes softly, “No, I didn’t have to, but I wanted to. Plus, Min has been excited to get you something.” You tell him, and the little girl by your side starts to nod her head violently, causing you to let out a small laugh. " Plus, it is your special day after all.”
Jay relented with a sigh, knowing that he wouldn’t be winning this fight, definitely not with the excited look that adorned his little girl’s face. So he sat down at the table, watching as the two of you walked out of the room, returning a few minutes later with the gifts in hand.
Coming back to the table, you took Minji's gift and set them both down on the table in front of Jay. Minji then clung to your side, her head resting on the side of your tummy, eyes on her dad as he thanked both of you.
Jay grabs the gift from Minji first, pulling out the stuffing paper and reaching inside. A wide smile pulls on his lips as he pulls out a cute coffee mug that was littered with little doodles that Minji had scribbled on them. Jay took a few moments to inspect every drawing on the cup, seeing butterflies, puppies, her name, as well as both yours and Jay’s names, as well as a bunch of other random doodles. With a stupid smile on his lips, he sat the cup down before grabbing the homemade card that she had made for him. He once again took his time reading it, relishing in the way that despite Minji being only five her spelling and handwriting were amazing.
When he was done reading the card, he sat it down next to the cup before turning to look over at Minji, who still had a hold of your hand, eyes on him. Jay held a hand out for the small child, and she rushed over to him without an ounce of hesitation, wrapping her arms around him.
“Happy Father’s Day, Daddy!” She exclaimed, resting her chin on his chest and looking up at him with a toothy grin.
“Thank you, baby girl.” He returned her goofy smile before pressing a kiss on her forehead, causing her eyes to flutter close, but the smile never left her lips.
Once Jay pulled away from her, Minji climbed onto his lap, quickly getting comfortable before looking over at you. Walking over, you place your hand on the back of Jay’s chair, watching as Jay reaches forward, grabbing the other small gift bag.
Jay throws a quick glance at you when he pulls a small ring box out, his eyebrows furrowed. He has a small feeling that he already knows what it is, or, well, more along the lines of what it could be. Your lips curl inward, trying to fight off the smile as you usher him to open it.
Opening the small box, Jay’s eyes go wide as he sees a ring sitting inside. However, it wasn’t just any ring. No, it was the right that he had been contemplating getting a few months back but decided not to. He was sure that you didn’t know about it, knowing how you are when he refuses to buy anything for himself, so how did you find out?
“What? How-”
You let out a laugh, hand moving to his shoulder, “Babe, you have a bad habit of not closing tabs when you’re done with them.”
Jay just chuckles with a small chuckle, “Yeah, you’re right.” He agreed before looking back down at the ring when he noticed how antsy Minji was in his lap. Asking if something was the matter she just shook her head before pointing to the piece of jewelry and telling him to look at the inside.
Confused, he takes the piece of jewelry out of the case before inspecting it. His eyes then go wide when he realizes that there are names inscribed on the inside of the band. Minji and Joonhee. Both of his little girls’ names.
“I knew how much you wanted something with the girls’ names on it, so when I saw the ring, I found a perfect solution.” You smiled sweetly at him as he looked up at you with literal stars shining in his eyes, making your heart flutter.
“Thank you, baby.” He spoke softly, biting back tears, but then he realized that he hadn’t seen your name with the girls’. “But where’s your name?”
You shook your head, telling him that you weren’t sure about adding your name, so you decided not to. Jay waved it off before saying that he’d go within the next few days to add your name.
“I want all of my girls’ names on there. Especially my wife and mother of my children.” His voice was sweet along with his words which easily brought tears to your eyes. You had wondered what you had done in your past life for you to deserve such a caring man like Jay.
You weren’t able to hold your tears this time resulting in them starting to fall down your cheeks.
“God dammit, Jay, I told you not to make me cry.” You curse him, trying to wipe the tears from your face, but it proves pointless as more just replaced the ones you had wiped away.
Jay chuckles softly before laying the ring back inside the box and grabbing Minji to pick her up once more. Hoisting the little girl on his hip as he stood, he wrapped his other arm around you, pulling your body into his, creating a small group hug.
“I love you both so so much.” He whispered, inhaling through his nose to keep his own tears at bay before pressing a kiss to Minji’s forehead. The little girl squealed with giggles, smiling at Jay when he pulled before leaning forward and pressing a kiss of her own on his cheek.
“I love you too, Jay, so much.” You responded to him as his eyes fell back on yours.
He leaned down, sealing your lips with his in a soft, gentle kiss, his hand on your jaw, angling your face for better access. After a few moments, the both of you pulled away with smiles adorning both of your faces.
Then you remembered the cake, quickly wiped the remaining tears from your cheeks, and smiled brightly at both Jay and Minji.
“Alright, who wants cake?” As soon as those words fell from your lips, Minji exclaimed loudly that she did, wiggling in Jay’s arms, causing you both to burst out laughing once more.
~
When the three of you were done with the cake, you all settled in the living room. You were lying between Jay’s legs, your back pressed against his chest, while Minji was curled up in your lap, using your baby bump as a pillow while the three of you watched movies.
It wasn’t too long before Minji fell asleep on your lap, her arms hanging loosely at her side while her face was smooshed against your belly. You cooed softly, brushed the hair out of her face watching her sleep for a few moments until a yawn tore through your lips.
“I think it’s time to call it a night; what do you say, bug?” Jay asked softly, his lips pressed against the back of your head.
Before you could even speak, you were cut off by a yawn answering Jay’s question. Laughing softly he maneuvered his way out from behind you so he could pick the sleeping child up.
“Noooo…” Minji whined sleepily as Jay pulled her from your lap, but as soon as her head laid on Jay’s shoulder, she was out once more.
Both of you laughed quietly before you moved to get off the couch, but Jay was quick to hold his hand out. Smiling up at him, you placed your smaller hand in him, allowing him to hoist you to your feet with little to no struggle.
You thanked him before the three of you made your way to Minji’s room to settle her before making it back to your room.
Settling down in bed, Jay reaches over to lay his hand on top of your baby bump once more. However, this time, the baby kicks, causing the both of you to laugh softly. He then leans over, capturing your lips in a soft, lingering kiss. Your hand finds his cheek, thumb brushing his skin gently, realizing his warmth.
Pulling away, he lays his forehead against yours, breathing softly through his nose, “Thank you, again, for everything.” He thanked you for the nth time that night causing you to giggle softly before reaching forward to cup his face in both hands, kissing him once more.
“I would do anything and everything for you Jay,” You smiled as he sealed your lips in yet another kiss, all of his love and adoration seeping out as he kissed you deeply this time.
Pulling away, he moved down to your belly, fingers caressing the skin that was peeking out from the bottom of your, well, his shirt. You watched with soft eyes as he placed gentle kisses on the curve of your stomach.
“Don’t keep your mom up all night, alright.” He whispered against your skin, causing a silly smile to spread on your lips as you ran your fingers through his hair.
The two of you lay down after turning the lights off. Jay’s arm wrapped around your waist, pulling your back flush against his chest. He then kissed your shoulder, trailing his lips up until he got to your ear.
“I don’t know how I became the luckiest man on earth, but I will never take it for granted.” He whispered softly, his warm breath sending a shiver down your spine. “I promise that I will do whatever it takes to make sure you and our daughters are taken care of.” He then kissed the top of your head, “I love you so much, baby,”
You mumbled a soft ‘I love you too,’ sleep already consuming your mind as you were encased in Jay’s warmth.
“Good night, my love.” He whispered as you closed your eyes, falling asleep with your hand lying over his.

You know, something that I was thinking about while I was walking my way towards my car was how the lads' men would treat you on mothers day with their kids?
Like think about it? — the morning hasn't even started yet, and they are already up and ready for the day before you could even crack a centimeter of your eyelids. and that's not because they didn't bother to wake you up on such an important day…
But because they promised their kiddo, they would serve you breakfast in bed
Like Xavier?... Now you cannot tell me Xavier wouldn't guide his toddler on how to properly stir the pancake batter from the bowl– like this man is patient, gently guiding their tiny hands with his own– he would soften and tender his voice as his baby tells him how much they want their momma to love it – that I even bet you by the time you wake up to the smell of pancakes and fruit on a tray …Xavier is already standing by your bedside with your child proudly presenting their new creation.
“Papa, is this enough?” they ask, holding up a slightly uneven cup of flour. Xavier glances at it, his blue eyes soft with patience.
“A little more,” he murmurs, placing his hand over theirs to guide the pour. “Careful, not too much.”
They continue working together in silence, Xavier focused on making sure everything is perfect, while the child chatters excitedly about surprising you.
“I bet Mama’s going to love this!” they exclaim, cheeks dusted with flour. Xavier’s lips twitch into a small smile, his voice steady as ever.
“She’ll love it because you made it for her.”
Sylus: now we know this man can cook ..and if he could ..he would prepare an entire cuisine that would rival Michelin star restaurants…he can make it basic ..but we all know he won't..it ain't gonna be some cereal with milk and maybe an orange on the side..NAH ..he gonna be wide awake in the morning with your toddler bouncing all over him in the kitchen eager to help at all costs to give you what you deserve – like he would task your baby to give your favorite drink in the morning in a glass cup as he whisks eggs and butter together.
“Daddy, I think I made a mess,” she says, eyes wide with innocence.
Sylus smirks, wiping a streak of flour off her nose with his thumb. “It’s not a mess. It’s art,” he declares, glancing at the bowl of slightly lumpy batter.
She giggles again, bouncing on her toes. “Mommy likes art …right?”
“Yes, she does," Sylus says, his red eyes gleaming with amusement as he pulls the tray together. “But maybe next time, we’ll leave the drinks to me, alright?”
Zayne: …now zayne tho …zayne is a different story ..he always lets his actions speak louder than his words and this is no different like he doesn't need to tell you how much he appreciates you but the gentle way he guides your toddler as they cut fruit says everyyyythingggg — like he would let them take the lead and offering quiet encouragement as your baby carefully cuts another strawberry in half
They frown, concentrating hard as they carefully slice the strawberries, while Zayne watches quietly, offering the occasional word of encouragement. “You’re doing great,” he says, a gentle smile playing on his lips as he slices the melons beside them.
“Is Mama still sleeping?” they ask, their voice soft with excitement.
Zayne nods, his green eyes glowing with quiet pride. “She’ll be surprised when she sees what we’ve made.”
As they finish assembling the fruit salad, Zayne picks up the tray, balancing it carefully with one hand while resting the other on his child’s shoulder. “Ready?” he asks, and they nod eagerly.
When they walk into the room, your child bounces onto the bed, proudly holding up a forkful of fruit. “Mama, look! I helped!”
Zayne sits beside you, his voice low and warm as he says, “Happy Mother’s Day, love. We wanted to make this day special for you.”
Rafayel: …oh my lord ..rafayel ..listen you walk into that kitchen and it's gonna be mess …ur toddler still gonna be smiling in the corner all proud of themselves saying how much they love you and prepared you sum scramble eggs with toast— only for it to be burnt and half baked. Flour is everywhere…the fruits they planned to put together that your toddler suggested they should make a smiley face with the eggs as eyes?? …all over the place. But it doesn't mean the morning went to waste!? – the whole scenery is adorable and filled with affection that you bet Rafayel is still going to say it was made with love.
You wake up to the unmistakable sound of chaos coming from the kitchen. There’s laughter, the clatter of dishes, and... the smell of something burning? You sit up, rubbing your eyes, just as Rafayel strides into the room, a lazy grin on his face and your toddler trailing behind him, still beaming.
“Mama! We made you breakfast!” your toddler shouts, bouncing on their toes with excitement.
Rafayel raises an eyebrow, clearly trying to suppress a laugh. “Yeah, ‘breakfast’ might be a generous word for it.”

cookie time! | andrei svechnikov
join my taglist!
pairing: dad!andrei svechnikov x reader
warnings: mentions of andrei's injury, the canes doing not so well, kids.
word count: 690 words
a/n: ok so i wrote this around last year when svech got injured for playoffs and i'm just posting it now lololol. but anyway! i felt like this was such a cute concept and needed to write it, so here it is! hope you enjoy it, i'm always open to feedback, requests, etc, etc.
“how much time till you can return to skating, dada?” your little girl, sofiya, asked as andrei tucked her into bed.
“that’s quite a long time, sunshine,” he replied. she pouted; there was nothing she loved more than going to games and supporting her daddy in her little svech jersey.
though andrei’s injury kept him off the ice, there wasn’t much anyone could do to stop him from visiting the rink, and sofiya would gladly follow him everywhere—she was such a daddy’s girl, after all.
so you’d still attend some games, but ever since svech was out, losing had become a constant, and frustration was clearly building within the team. especially for andrei, who couldn’t help but feel guilty for not being able to play.
the mood wasn’t the best, but when it came to sofiya, he would always put on a smile. it wasn’t often that they got to spend so much time together, so she loved having him home to attend her tea parties, tuck her into bed, and take her to school. as much as she adored it, though, she knew her dad missed being on the ice, and sofiya didn’t like seeing him hurt and sad. so one morning, just as she heard andrei leaving for therapy, she went downstairs with what she thought was the perfect plan to cheer him up.
you were in the kitchen, tidying up from breakfast. it was still early, so you planned to get a bit more sleep, assuming your little girl wouldn’t be up until later—or so you thought, until you heard her quick footsteps on the stairs.
“morning, love. what are you doing up so early?” you asked, watching as she entered the kitchen and grabbed a stool to stand next to you.
“can we make chocolate chip cookies?” she asked, leaving a kiss on your cheek.
“cookies? it’s too early for those, baby,” you said, though knowing chocolate chip cookies were her all-time favorite.
“i know, mom, but cookies make me happy. i bet they’ll make dada happy, too!” she said, explaining her plan with such conviction that you couldn’t help but smile.
it was so sweet how she was thinking of ways to cheer up her dad. so, you quickly gave in, gathered all the ingredients, and handed her a small apron.
she started by cracking the eggs (with a tiny bit of shell making it into the bowl), then you helped her measure the flour, and sofiya poured in what seemed like way too many chocolate chips. the kitchen turned into a delightful mess: flour dusted the counters, little chocolate fingerprints decorated the cabinets, and sofiya sneaked a few chocolate chips every chance she got.
“daddy’s gonna love this!” she said, her eyes shining with excitement.
but just as the first batch of cookies went into the oven, you heard the door open earlier than expected, and sofiya’s face fell.
“oh no, mom! he’s here too soon. it’s all ruined,” she muttered, disappointed.
andrei stepped into the kitchen, chuckling as he took in the scene—flour everywhere, cookie dough on the counters, and sofiya’s pouty face.
“sunshine, what’s all this?” he asked, his eyes softening as he looked at her.
“i wanted to surprise you,” she murmured. “make you happy like you make me happy.”
his face brightened, and he pulled her into a warm hug. “well, you sure did, kiddo. this is the best surprise i could ask for.”
sofiya smiled brightly, inviting him to join her. together, the three of you continued baking. as andrei helped sofiya clean up the counters, you caught his eye, sharing a warm smile. moments like these were rare but so precious.
as the cookies finished baking, andrei had an idea. “hey, sweetheart, how about we take these cookies to practice and share them with the team?”
sofiya’s eyes lit up in excitement. “yes! they’ll be so happy. i miss uncle jarvy,” she said with a little pout.
“he sure misses you too, baby.”
and with a plate of freshly baked cookies in hand, the three of you headed to the rink, just as morning skate wrapped up.

not your mama - m.m
Warnings: swearing!
Pairing: Eminem x fem!reader
Hallie had not gone a single day since you’d babysat her without mentioning your name at least once.
“I want Y/N back!”
“Me and Y/N made a cake when she came!”
“No. Y/N makes better food,”.
It annoyed Em in some ways, but he would be glad to finally stop his daughter from whining about you when he found out he had a concert. “Hey,” you heard his voice through the phone as you picked up, a smile on your face.
Em was a bit terrifying but you liked Hallie a lot and you had to admit, you were a little intrigued by the somewhat mysterious rapper. “Just wondering if you could come and keep watch of Hallie again?” his gruff voice came through the phone.
“Yeah, sure,” you said. Half of the want to go on your part was to learn about Em, but he wouldn’t be there, obviously. So once again, you turned up the house in your dress and heels, a little earlier so he wouldn’t be panicked. “Hey,” you smiled as he nodded to you, letting you in.
Yet again, he has a bandana tied round his head, an almost ridiculously baggy matching set of a grey hoodie and joggers, and his classic white trainers. “So, uh,” he said a little sheepishly, scratching the back of his neck as you blinked, a little bemused.
“The show kinda got cancelled and shit,” he said, his voice almost a mumble as you nodded. “I can give the money back-,” you reached into your purse to return the stack of money he’d given you for the babysitting duty.
“Nah, nah, it’s alright,” he said, pushing your hand back as you slowly deposited it back into your bag, “jus’, can you stay anyways? Hallie won’t stop goin’ on about you,” he explained as you smiled.
“She remembers me, then?” you asked, whilst following behind him so you could take in his outfit form where you were. “Hell yeah, she won’t drop it,” Em smiled, “fuckin’ obsessed with you, I swear. I wanna see what magic you do to make her like this,”.
“It’s not anything, really,” you said as little sheepishly as he smiled, following you into the lounge. “Must be something,” he said as Hallie’s eyes lit up, her voice shrieking your name Im excitement. “Y/N!” she gasped, almost shocked you’d come back.
“Hey sweetheart,” you knelt down, giving her a little hug as she wrapped her small arms round you. “She doesn’t react like that to any other babysitters,” Em said, kneeling down to give his daughter a kiss on the cheek as she cling onto you like a koala.
“Daddy, can me and Y/N make a cake?” Hallie asked, giving her father puppy eyes as Em sighed. “Go on then, but don’t make a mess,” he said, following you and Hallie into the kitchen. It didn’t even take thirty seconds for her to go against her father’s words.
“Hallie-!” you gasped as the flour puffed onto your face, a white cloud of dust forming round both you and Em. You were both stunner, staring at each other in shock before your burst out laughing, Em moving his finger to glide it down your cheek and remove the flour.
“I’m so sorry,” he said, stifling a laugh as he took in your dress, covered in the white powder. “You cam grab some hoodies or something from my room,” he said, as the dress was barely even wearable at this point. “Thanks,” you said, going up the stairs with a smile.
You ended up pulling in a plain black hoodie, your legs bare as the hem of the piece of clothing reached to your mid thighs. And god did Em like seeing you in his clothes. “Can we make it a chocolate cake?” Hallie asked, grabbing the cocoa, as you took it from her. You weren’t gonna make the same mistake again.
“Just a little bit,” Em said, helping Hallie tilt the packet…only for her to dump near the whole thing into the bowl. “Oops,” she said, knowing fully well what she’d done. You sighed, taking over the stirring, hoping maybe the cake wouldn’t taste like just raw chocolate.
“Add some of this,” Em said, his hand brushing yours as he handed you some vanilla extract. Hallie busied herself as the ‘DJ’ (her words), finding some songs to put on. “Hallie,” Em said warningly as she put on ‘The Real Slim Shady’.
He sighed, lifting her off of the kitchen counter and changing the CD to the clean version as you smiled, putting some dishes in the sink. “Hallie, you help me clean the dishes, okay?” Em said to her as she whined, shaking her head. “No,” she said, “you add Y/N can do the dishes, I wanna stir,”.
You gave her the spoon as you went to the sink, letting her stand on a stool as you let the warm water flood over the dishes, Em taking the clean ones to dry them. It was a cycle, your fingers brushing every time you gave him a dish, cheeks tinged slightly red.
The cake ended up tasting quite good, even if Hallie did manage to smear a swipe of chocolate across Em’s cheek. He wasn’t as scary as you thought he’d be, anyways. “Feel free to come back anytime,” Em said, cutting a slice of cake and placing it into a little box for you to take. “Thank you,” you accepted the box, waving Hallie goodbye.
“I’ll come back to give the box and your hoodie back,” you said, as Em smiled, eyes dropping to your body for a split second.

Every time I listen to Dust Bowl by Ethel Cain, I have to turn it up as loud as I can, so the song can encompass me entirely because it genuinely transcends me into heaven. My bones, guts, and skin literally melt in the most delightful way. Especially at the part where she says “cookin our brains, smokin that shit your daddy smoked in vietna-ah-ah-ah-am”. It’s truly otherworldly.

𝐃𝐁𝐅!𝐀𝐁𝐁𝐘 craves more of that sugar and spice you got…
in warm sugared hues, small specks of flour dusted the rosy apples of your cheeks, that you so delicately sifted into a porcelain bowl just a few minutes prior, blending the creamy batter with each tender turn of the whisk in sugar's sweet caress, as the candied aroma of vanilla meshed with fine sprinkles of cinnamon left a trail of delight.
the silky frills neatly draped along the hemline of that dainty apron tied snugly around your waist gently swayed, whilst you tiptoed around your quaint kitchen, softly molding the buttery warmth of the dough into tiny morsels, so sweet for your loving parents to enjoy, once they get back home.
little did they know, their seemingly innocent sweetheart, an angel pure in their sight, harbored a secret beneath that sugary guise of hers. one, in which your charming, gentle giant next door neighbor and dad's best bud anderson, payed you frequent special visits to get a lasting taste of her most beloved special treat, always coming back to savor that sticky sweetness of yours on the very tip of her tongue, when their watchful eyes aren't around.
bending you over the counter adorned in delectable swirls of glossy frosting and powdered sugar, abby slipped the rough pads of her fingers through the lovely little ribbon of that apron wrapped behind the small of your back. flipping your skirt up over your hips she gingerly traced the rough flat of her palm between the plush of those swollen lips to your drooling princess parts, "you're irresistible, d'you know that cupcake?".
soft mewls bubbled away in your throat, as she relentlessly left light smacks against your spread out pussy, glazing her thick digits in the creamy slick of your love juices, almost as sweet as the tender-hearted dessert you so docilely prepared.
oh, how she loved fucking her little darling baker stupid. having you almost forget that special family recipe of yours, you tucked so closely to your heart, from all that teasing and toying with her dearest treat right between your thighs, "acting like a good girl in front of daddy, but are truly such a needy little play thing for momma, huh. aren't you, baby?"

MERRY CHRISTMAS AT THE NANAMI'S
⋆。°✩Genre: Fluff fluff and more fluff
⋆。°✩Synopsis:You nanami and your two daughters end up baking Christmas cookies on Christmas eve and opening presents Christmas day.
⋆。°✩A/N: Not proofread + lowk rushed, so give me grace and happy holidays!
The sweet sounds of Christmas carols filled the air as you and Nanami took on the task of preparing the gingerbread batter.
Your youngest couldn't resist the allure of the dough batter. Nanami's gentle words didn't fase her as she sneakily grabbed some of the dough batter to eat. Pumpkin, you can't keep eating the dough," Nanami smiled with a twinkle in his eye. You giggled at her continuing to hide away from him while she ate the batter.
It's so gooddd tho," she whined, coming up from the table with a guilt written all over her face as she had some leftover crumbs on the sides of her mouth.
"I know, pumpkin, but we have to save some, or there won't be any for the cookies. Understand?" Nanami's voice carried a tender note as he softly explained. In response, your youngest nodded her head, signaling her understanding."Good," Nanami declared, a warm smile gracing his features as he playfully booped her nose, glad she understood him.
"Alright, so now we have to add the flour in," you instructed,Your oldest, standing by your side egar to make the cookies.Guiding her with gentle precision, you both shared the task of pouring the right amount of flour into the pan.
With the gingerbread batter now perfectly blended, the kitchen transitioned into a creative haven. Flour dusted the air as your family set to work, rolling out the dough and selecting festive cookie cutters. The sweet sounds of Christmas carols harmonized with the joyous chatter, creating a festive vibe of holiday spirit.
Your youngest, unable to resist the allure of the dough, strategically pilfered a few more bites while Nanami pretended not to notice, a playful twinkle in his eye. "Alright, pumpkin, just a little more, but then we really need to save some for the cookies," he teased, earning a mischievous giggle from her.
You and your oldest began crafting the shapes for the cookies from the dough. " god, I can't wait to eat this." Your oldest exclaimed, Together, you meticulously crafted a bunch of different shapes. From perfect circles, endearing gingerbread men, charming snowmen, and even elegant reindeer. The air was filled with the scent of gingerbread, and the countertop displayed a festive array of carefully shaped cookies, ready to be baked into delectable holiday treats.
But before you could register your youngest, put some dough on the tip of your nose. "Woww really pumkin?" You questioned, ready to get your payback. Nanami behind her put some of the leftover dough he had putting it on her nose. Once he did this, you and your oldest put some more dough on her face. The laugher of yalls filled the room but your youngest was super happy cause all she did was eat the dough you three had put on her face.
In a playful twist, before you could fully grasp the situation, your youngest, displaying a sneakiness beyond her years, planted a small dollop of dough on the tip of your nose. "Wow, really, pumpkin?" you questioned, a mixture of surprise and amusement in your voice, already plotting your payback.
Nanami, appearing out of nowhere with a twinkle in his eye, seized the opportunity and added some leftover dough to her nose. "Daddy really!!" She gasped in shock that he would do that to her. You and your oldest joined forces in retaliation, covering your youngest's face with more dough. Laughter filling the room with an infectious joy.
Amidst the doughy laughter and festive chaos, a mischievous glint in your youngest's eyes hinted at an upcoming twist. With a sly smile, she reached for a bowl of sprinkles, clearly plotting her own sweet revenge. As you and the rest of the family exchanged playful banter, unaware of her scheming, she seized the moment. With lightning speed, she showered you with a cascade of colorful sprinkles."Pumkin!" You three laughed at the sprinkles now covered in your hair and all over the floor.
You're so lucky it's almost Christmas," you playfully warned her, a smile gracing both of your faces. "I don't know if Santa is stopping by here," you continued, teasingly casting a shadow of doubt. The sparkle in her eyes quickly dimmed, replaced by a subtle frown. Her hopeful excitement transformed into a plea as she exclaimed, "No, I'm sorry, Santa! I'm sorry!" Her earnest plea hung in the air, a mixture of genuine remorse and guilt.
"Come help me put these in the oven if you want Santa to come," you beckoned, a twinkle of mischief in your eyes. The promise of Santa's visit spurred her into action, and she swiftly darted over to your side, slipping on oven mitts in a determined effort to assist.
After 30 minutes, Nanami quietly approached from behind, joining you in the kitchen to help pull out the cookies. The enticing aroma of freshly baked gingerbread filled your noses."Let's decorate themmm," you suggested, excitement bubbling in your voice. The cookies are now golden brown and smelling delicious.
You four spent the some time decorating the cookies in different types of ways. " Look at my cookies! "Look at my cookies!" your youngest exclaimed, holding up her creations with infectious pride. The array of cookies showcased the unique designs of you, Nanami, and her older sister.
After the cookies were all decorated, you decided it was time for the kids to whine down, getting them into their pajamas and pre paring them for bed.
You and Nanami sat in your shared room together. You and Nanami found yourselves surrounded by the soft glow of holiday lights, wrapping gifts for your children. The air was charged with a mixture of warmth and gratitude."Thank you for letting me be able to live like this, love," Nanami expressed, his voice carrying a depth of appreciation that echoed through the room. The sentiment reflected not only gratitude for the holiday season but a profound acknowledgment of the life you two had built together.
"Kento, you say this every day, and I'm grateful to have you too," you giggled, Playfully, you moved closer, going over to Kento and straddling him, resting your head into the crook of his neck." I love you."Thank you, Kento, for being so appreciative and understanding with me and the kids," you expressed, the intimacy of the moment increasing.
You leaned in and pecked his lips a few times, each kiss carrying a genuine expression of happiness. In those tender moments, you reflected on the significance of having this man in your life. You didn't know where you'd be if you didn't have his man in your life.
Amidst the hushed excitement, you caught the whispers of your two daughters attempting to sneak a peek at their presents. Swiftly, you moved to the door, gently ushering them away with a playful warning that Santa wouldn't come if they didn't go to bed. The soft patter of their hurried footsteps echoed as they rushed to their beds trying to fall back asleep even though they couldn't.
The sweet chaos of Christmas morning unfolded as your daughters eagerly sought to rouse you and Kento from slumber. The urgency in their voices resonated through the room, one daughter calling out, "Mommy, mommy!" with an enthusiastic shake, while the other, equally excited, chimed in, "Daddy, wake uppp!" as she, too, attempted to stir Kento from his sleep.
"I'm up cupcake." Kentos deep groggy voice spoke as he picked up your daughter, pulling her into the bed. You did the same, pulling the girls to be in the middle of you, too. You smiled at the girl in front of you, whipping off some crumbs off her face, signaling she ate some cookies without you letting her but would let it slide since it's Christmas.
"Merry Christmas, love," Kento uttered with a sense of awe, his gaze fixed on you, the the family. Gratitude radiated from his eyes as he acknowledged the profound role you played in shaping the warmth and joy that enveloped the household.
"Merry Christmas, Kento," you replied with a reciprocal smile, the exchange of glances becoming a silent celebration of the love and connection that defined your family.C'mon, let's go open presents!" The excitement built to a climax as your oldest child, full of energy, lost control. she exclaimed, her enthusiasm igniting a spark of joy that danced through the room
You two got up out of the bed, walking down stars with the two of your daughters in the middle, one of them holding kentos hand and the other holding your hand. "Santa cameee!" They let go of your and Nanami's hands, dashing over to the array of presents that awaited them, each gift adorned with their names, promising the joyous unraveling of Christmas magic.
But before the girls even got the chance to open one of their gifts, kento was ready with a garbage bag in hand, ready for them to put their wrapping paper into. A small chuckle came from your mouth at the gesture. He looked over at you a small"what?" Coming from his mouth. You started laughing even harder." Nothing ken you're just really funny. Ready to pick up the girls' paper.
Nanami shot you a small chuckle, turing back to one of the girls as they put the wrapper paper in the plastic bag.
After some time of the girls unwrapping their gifts, it was you, and kentos turned to give each other gifts. He was a rather hard man to shop for always saying he doesn't want anything or you don't have to get him anything because he's happy with the life you blessed him with.
"Kentooo, here's your gift," you announced with a smile, presenting him with a carefully wrapped package. The anticipation hung in the air as he unwrapped it, revealing the new and expensive watch you had carefully chosen for him. As his eyes fell upon the timepiece he had been longing for, a genuine surprise illuminated his face, gratitude and joy blending seamlessly.
"Thank you, love," he expressed, his voice carrying a sincerity that mirrored the depth of his appreciation. he leaned in, pressing a quick peck on your lips. The room filled with 'ewws' and 'yucks' from your daughters, their playful teasing adding a layer of lightheartedness to the moment.
"Whatever," you playfully stuck your tongue out at your two kids, a mischievous smile dancing on your lips. Gratitude for Nanami filled your heart as he handed you an envelope, its contents promising a ticket for a free spa day whenever you desired a break
Additionally, he presented a beautifully wrapped box containing custom jewelry. As you opened it, the delicate pieces reflected a personal touch, and a handwritten letter accompanied them. The letterexpressed the reasons he loved you, making the gift not only visually stunning but emotionally resonant. The room seemed to glow with the warmth of appreciation and affection as Nanami's thoughtful presents.
"Thank youuu kento. I love you."
"I love you too love thank you for everything."

cowboydisaster's christmas countdown: FIVE days 'till christmas!
christmas countdown┊main masterlist┊rdr2 masterlist
The kitchen appears as if a bomb of flour has exploded, sending white dust across the countertops, sprinkled onto the floor and spattered on the walls. As much as the mess is stressing you out, you can’t find it within you to care too much. The phonograph situated under the living room window is playing a classical christmas record. You’d picked it up in town, finding that it’s helpful in drowning out the sound of the cold wind outside.
“Oh, baby, let me help.” You cringe at the sight of your daughter spilling dribbles of milk onto the counter instead of into the mixing bowl.
“I do it, Momma.” Aspen says, her little fingers trying to steady the jar. You wipe your hands on your apron, coming up behind her and holding your hands over hers to help.
“You’re doing a very good job. Momma’s just gonna help, is all.” You reassure, smiling as Aspen helps you add the ingredients. Once the milk is all poured in, she takes the spoon and begins to stir the ingredients together. You glance up at the window by the front door, noting that the blue hills in the distance are no longer visible. In fact nothing is visible. All that you can see is white. Snowblind. It’s far below freezing outside, and you worry for anyone left out in the hellstorm. Your heart seizes in your chest, but when your daughter's worried eyes land on you, you smile. Pushing down any worry.
“Daddy?” Aspen asks, her sad, worried, little blue eyes glancing towards the door. You curse yourself for putting your worry onto her. Her little heart is far too innocent for such troubles.
“Daddy will be home from work soon, baby. Why don't we get these cookies done so we can surprise him, okay?”
“Okay.” She smiles again. That perfect little smile, identical to Arthur's.
Aspen helps you roll the dough out and cut it into her requested little shapes. She had wanted to make her daddy a deer, but when that proved to be too difficult for even you, she had settled on snowflakes, horses, crosses, and stars.
Once all the cookies are cut, you send Aspen into the living room with Bear. She’s within eyeshot, and you smile at the sight of her sitting on the floor with the black newfoundland. She’s trying to read him her favorite storybook. Her legs are crossed, with Bear’s head resting in her lap as she tries to recall the story. She can’t read yet, but by God, your little girl is trying.
You place the raw cookies down into the Dutch oven before covering it in glowing red coals. A quick glance at your pocket watch, and your gut sinks. It's a quarter ‘till five already, and your husband was supposed to be home at four. The light from the window is fading, the white light going dull as day turns to dusk.
This is your first Christmas here. Your first Christmas away from the gang, from that life. Aspen has a chance at a normal life now, you all do, and you’ll be damned if some hellish forces try to take that from your family.
All that you can do now is keep yourself distracted. Years ago you would have run out into the storm, leaped onto Sugar and galloped towards town looking for him, but you have more than Arthur to worry about now. As much as it kills you to sit here, you can’t leave her, and you surely can’t take her.
To distract yourself from the sticky black cloud of thoughts, you clean the kitchen, wiping up all of the flour and washing all of the dishes in the dish bin. The phonogram switches to the next song as you finish up, and you check your watch to confirm that the cookies are done.
“Aspen, wanna help?” You call towards the living room. Her brown curls bounce as she turns her head towards you, blue eyes filled with excitement.
“Uh-huh!” Aspen hums, flipping her book to the next page and placing it in front of Bear’s paws, “You read now, puppy.” She whispers, offering him a sweet pat to the head before she’s running back into the kitchen.
You pull the Dutch oven out of the fire, removing the lid with potholders so you can peek inside.
“Remember, don’t touch. This is hot.” You tell her, and Aspen nods her head, taking your instruction with the utmost seriousness.
“Hot.” She repeats, keeping her little hands far away. When you pull the cookies out, she gasps with wonder.
“Wow!” She smiles, eyes going wide with joy. Her little hands clasp together, “Cookies for Daddy! Them are so pretty, huh, Momma?”
“Very pretty.” You struggle to contain your smile, placing the cookies onto glassware to set out for when Arthur returns home. Of course, you set a few out for Santa Claus, too.
As Aspen drools over the cookies (and sneaks one to Bear), you check on the roast. You purposely hold your breath as you lift the lid, knowing that the smell will make you sick. You deem it done, and then return to the cookies. Just as you’re about to take one for yourself, Bear barks.
“Daddy’s home!” Aspen’s eyes light up, and your eyes flicker to the door hopefully. The door opens quickly, and in emerges your husband, wrapped in his ancient, blue winter coat. The hat on his head is covered in snow, and when he pulls it away from his head, you see how pink his cheeks are. As miserable as he must be, he shows nothing but happiness.
“There’s my girls! C’mere.” Arthur says as Aspen erupts into giggles, nearly tripping over her dress as she runs into his arms. He shrugs his coat off just in time to scoop her wiggly little body up. He sits Aspen on his waist, and as she wraps her arms around his neck, he looks to you.
“Oh, Arthur, I was so worried. You must be frozen.” You whisper, eyebrows drawing together in concern.
“I’m just fine now, sweetheart.” He smiles, extending his arm to pull you into his open side. His eyes look to yours, melting away any trace of worry that you’re clinging to from the day. Your eyes slip shut, and you let out a long breath as Arthur holds you and Aspen against him. Aspen wraps her hands around you both, effectively creating a hug between all three of you.
“Love you, darlin’.” Arthur whispers to you, and you look up, placing a small kiss to his lips.
“S’ Christmas Eve.” Arthur smirks, “Santa comin’ tonight?”
You pull away from Arthur, keeping your hands intertwined as you bring him towards the kitchen. Aspen nods profusely, small fingers twirling her curls nervously, “Mhm! I listened to Momma and you, I'm on the good list, Daddy.”
“I know you are, baby. I’m sure he’ll be comin’ tonight.” You reassure, “Well,” You divert your attention to Arthur who must be starving, “We have been very busy today.”
— — —
“She’s asleep.” Arthur whispers, closing Aspen’s bedroom door, being extra careful to not let the door creak, “Bear’s up in bed with her.” He cracks a smile, momentarily glancing to the Christmas tree, and under it, where a few presents signed from Santa sit for Aspen. You look up from your seat on the couch, putting down your embroidery to extend your hand to Arthur.
“Come here.” You request. His much larger, rough hand slips into yours effortlessly, and he sits beside you on the couch. Naturally, you curl up against him, cherishing his warmth, his love.
The fireplace holds a decent sized fire, and flames lick the mantle, emitting a steady warmth onto the two of you. The crackle and pop of embers is soothing, and your eyes slip closed as you fall into a comfortable quiet.
“Thanks for puttin’ her to sleep.” You whisper.
“‘Course. I missed her. I hate bein’ away from you both.” Arthur shakes his head, “I don’t like leavin’ you out here. And trust me– I know you can handle your own, I just… don't like bein’ away.” Arthur admits, and you rest your head against him.
“I know. It’s not forever, though. We’ll be okay.”
Arthur hums, and then raises an eyebrow, as if remembering something.
“I got you somethin’ for Christmas. S’just little.”
Your interest is piqued, and you scoot forward on the couch to peek as he reaches into his leather satchel on the floor.
“Arthur, you didn’t have to–” You start, your voice quickly dying as you see what he’s pulling out.
A little leather-bound journal is extended to you. Your eyebrows furrow, and you hesitate to take it, but Arthur nods.
“Is this…? How did you– Where?” You struggle to organize your thoughts, words failing as you take the book, as you flip through the pages. Your questions become more muddled as you realize that this is Arthur’s journal. The one that he’d documented everything in. The one that he’d lost in the escape from Beaver Hollow. Your jaw falls slack, confusion and nostalgia, loss and love swirling together in your head, “How…?” You whisper, tears filling your eyes as you glance to Arthur, then down to the page where he’d documented the day Aspen was born.
“Called in a favor from an old friend.” Arthur smirks, but turns serious, tapping the book page, “I want you to have this, considerin’ most of these entries are about you.”
Your heart swells, tears dripping down your cheeks as you hold his journal close to your heart.
“I love it, Arthur. I- I love you.” You whimper, emotionally. He smiles, warm and loving, his thumb wiping a tear from your cheek.
“Love you too, sweetheart.”
He holds you against him for a long while, the two of you flipping through old memories, good and bad. You recount the day you got married, the day Aspen was born. The most haunting entry is the last one. The day Arthur had begged you, forced you to take Aspen and Sugar, to flee Beaver Hollow and get as far away as possible. You’ll never forget turning around and seeing the place go up in flames, not knowing if you’d ever see your husband again. When Arthur made it out that day, he had left nearly everything– including his journal. You both had assumed it burned in the fire, and any hope that it didn’t was crushed by the fact that you can’t go back there.
After a while of flipping, the anxiety in your stomach finally quells, and you speak up, “I have a little surprise for you too.” You whisper, closing the journal and setting it on the coffee table. Arthur’s eyebrows draw together, and he sits up straighter on the couch as you turn to face him. Your hands toy with each other, and Arthur takes them in his own to quell the bad habit.
“You didn’t have to–” He begins.
“No, no,” You huff a laugh, “I didn’t spend any money.”
His eyebrows draw further together as you bite your lip nervously.
“Darlin? What is it?” Arthur asks, and you smile sheepishly.
One deep breath, in and out, and you’ll tell him. He won’t be mad surely? Right? He couldn’t be… not your Arthur.
You take a breath, “I’m pregnant again.”
Arthur’s eyes go wide in surprise, and he stutters over his words for a moment. You search his eyes, his face for any sort of reaction, and in a moment his lips crack into a smile.
“We’re– we’re havin’ another baby? You’re sure?” Arthur asks hopefully, hands squeezing yours. You nod.
“I didn’t wanna tell you until I was sure, and… well, I’m sure now, Arthur. I'm pregnant.”
Arthur laughs, eyes locked onto yours, heart soaring with more emotion than he ever thought possible. He never thought he would love anyone again… and then he met you, and then he was sure he'd never love anyone as much as he loves you– and then you made him a father, twice now. Arthur's hands tighten around yours, and you finally break into a teary eyed smile, the anxiety gone now that you've managed to get the words out.
"We're havin’ another baby.” You repeat, smiling up at him with blurred vision.
Before you can say much else, Arthur’s hand gently grips your jaw, and he pulls you against his lips. Your hand still squeezes his as he moves against you, only pulling away to breathe.
“You’re givin’ me everything I’ve ever wanted.” Arthur smiles, the deep kind, the kind that wrinkles the crows feet in the corners of his eyes.
Arthur's hand snakes down to your stomach, and although there is no noticeable bump, it brings him comfort to rest his palm against it. He knows his baby is in there, your baby, and he wants to be close by. It’s a small habit he’d done when you were pregnant with Aspen too.
“We made it, darlin’, we–” Arthur huffs, a smile on his lips, “I've got you here, in our home. Our daughter sleepin’ in her bed. Our dog. You're carryin' my baby again."
Arthur's tone grows serious, and he brings your hand up to his lips, kissing the top, “Thank you.”
“Merry Christmas, Arthur.”
The snowstorm rages on outside, but it is far from able to outshine the joy and the warmth that is projecting from your four little walls this Christmas Eve.
