Understanding Anti-Hindu Sentiment: How Muslims and Ex-Muslims can support Hindu Communities
Anti-Hindu sentiment is about holding negative stereotypes about people or communities that practice Hinduism. A common type of anti-Hindu sentiment is based on religous views emerging from Islamist extremism where worshipping idol is seen as heresy. An example of anti-Hindu hate speech includes Islamist hate preachers invoking violence against Hindu community, places of Hindu worship such as temples and treating Hindu people as second-class citizens.
Violence against Hindu minorities is not an uncommon phenomena. In 2001, the Islamist extremist group Taliban adopted the same style of persecution against Afghan Hindus as Nazis did against Jews by requiring Afghan Hindus to wear badges. In 2013, a wave of violent attacks against the Hindu minority communities rocked Bangladesh that included robbing the possessions of Hindu households, vandalising temples and physically injuring them including the rape of at least one woman. In Pakistan, persistent anti-Hindu sentiment by hardline Islamist groups has led to an increased decline in the country’s Hindu population as many fled to save their lives.
One of this blog’s aim is to break this culture of hate speech and violence against Hindu minorities in Islam-dominated communities by encouraging Muslims and Ex-Muslims to stand in solidarity with the Hindu communities.
If you are a Muslim or an Ex-Muslim, there are several ways you can support the Hindu communities:
Understand the history and context behind Hindu faith. It’s the oldest religion in the world, and like other religions, has gone through reformations through the decades. There are contentious ancient texts about widow burning, caste while there are a treasure trove of literature and themes exploring topics such as consciousness, charity, etc.
If you know a Hindu neighbour who may have been affected by anti-Hindu prejudice, reach out to them with empathy and offer support should they need them.
If you are studying at a school or university, getting involved in multicultural activities such as Holi, Diwali or Durga Puja are fantastic ways to understand the beauty of Hindu culture.
If you see a Hindu person is being discriminated or being bullied, do not ignore it. If this is a situation of potential violence, call the police immediately. If you see anti-Hindu discrimination happeneing at a workplace, speak to your line manager.
If you want to understand or study the historical context of anti-Hindu sentiment, a simple desk research is a good place to start. You can also start here.
We plan to take more tailored and effective initiatives in future to help everyone with anti-Hindu hate speech, in the spirit of multiculturalism that binds us all together. If you have any idea on how we can better support the Hindu community in dealing with hate-speech and would want us to add to this blog post, you can directly contribution suggestions in the publicly editable version of the blog here. All contributions are subject to review.
