You want to know what kind of friend I am?
My friend was sad the other night so I sent them a ridiculous amount of gifs and pictures of Themberchaud until they felt better.
Who's Themberchaud you ask?
Well I'm glad you asked.
He's the cutest fat dragon ever. Sure he'll probably definitely try to eat you,but he looks like this:
Look at him go.

No wonder Dungeons and Dragons Honor Among Thieves hasnât taken over the collective hive mind of Tumblr, there are so many tag variations to keep track of and even I think itâs a ridiculous amount of work to sift through them all. Just in the reblogs of my own post Iâve seen people interpret it as dndhat, d&d hat, honor among thieves, dungeons and dragons honor among thieves, dungeons & dragons: honor among thieves, D&D movie just to name a few
#dungeons and dragons honor among thieves#dndhat#d&d hat#yeah Iâm not tagging all of them but good luck finding the content you want for this movie#em rambles

I want to talk about how Dungeons and Dragons Honor Among Thieves is an excellent use of meta humor applied seamlessly to a story without ever breaking immersion.
Mild spoilers. I'll keep it vague so nothing will be spoiled if you choose to read on
This movie integrates many things that someone familiar with D&D would recognize from the narrative structure of a campaign.
There are some things in particular that demonstrate this particularly well
At one point, the party is joined temporarily by the character Xenk. But he really feels like he'd be an NPC party member controlled by the GM rather than a player. So when the other characters banter and quip, this character doesn't really join in or get their jokes cuz he simply wouldn't have the agency to. More examples of this would be how he's much more capable than the others, but he doesn't overshadow them. He provides aid if it's desperately needed, and will sometimes bail rhe party out of situations they can't manage on their own, just like how a GM should utilize an NPC companion. He even has a quote that perfectly reflects this. "I've given you the tools. Now you have to be the ones to use them". There's even a more direct joke about his NPC behavior. When he leaves the story, he walks off in a random direction, going straight forward, even stepping over obstacles and terrain unnecessarily. This all amounts to him feeling like a very clear GM controlled NPC, however he is presented in a way that still makes him feel entirely faithfull to his own world and does not break immersion
Other ways the movie plays around with the GM campaign structure would be the approach to backstory. The only time a character outright explains what their backstory is, in full, directly to us, is at the very start, to give context for the story going forward, as the character even puts it himself. Backstory later in the movie is told to us whenever it's relevant. Characters will toss in another fact or two about themselves in situations where mentioning a past experience would fit in. Much like how players usually prefer to build their characters.
And one of my favorite instances of being meta about D&D campaign structures comes in the second act.
the characters are faced with a complex and dangerous obstacle. The GM's stand in, xenk, explains the method of progressing through this obstacle correctly. But in true D&D fashion, the party immediately does it wrong and now the campaign has been derailed and the GM's setup squandered. So now they straight up don't have a way forward in the narrative. Logically, it should end there. But that'd be a shit campaign, so the GM would naturally bend the rules to get things back on track. So after the party fails the obstacle, one of them goes; "Hang on, that stick we've had with us the entire time isn't a stick after all! It's actually a magic staff that solves our EXACT predicament at this EXACT time". That is such a clear cut meta joke about GM's having to get things back on track cuz players are all chaotic evil. Is it a plot contrivance? Absolutely. One of the biggest ever. But it's what D&D is built on

Animation (specifically 2D animation) is my preferred TV/film medium. A piece of live-action has to go above and beyond to get over my personal bias of, "most things would be better if they were animated," but it's taken me a long time to figure out what, exactly, makes a piece of live-action really do it for me.
I think what it really comes down to, for me, is the little details. If your live-action doesn't have some level of nuanced physical acting, intense detailing in costuming and set design, a strong sense of visual storytelling, or kickass practical effects, I'm pretty much always going to come away thinking, "I'd like it better as a cartoon."
I think some of this is due to my issues with face blindness--I need characters to have distinct silhouette and costuming, or they will all blur together in my head. Animation tends to stress the importance of silhouette, so I have an easier time telling everyone apart and following who's who. That's not to say that this problem doesn't happen in animation, or that it always happens in live action, but I do think it contributes to my personal preferences.
Anyway, just for fun, a random shortlist of some live-action that I think uses its medium well:
Child's Play/Chucky. Half the appeal of Chucky (IMHO) is the incredible showcase of practical effects and animatronics. Each incarnation of the Chucky doll incorporates incredible advances in animatronic and puppeteering technology. I have on multiple occasions compared the Chucky puppeteer team to Muppet performers. That shit is its own art form, and it's incredible. The current Chucky show makes some use of CGI, but it's all to enhance the practical effects, and the puppeteers are all given the spotlight in the show's credits. I love that.
Killjoys. The incredible nuance to the actors' body and facial acting is mind-blowing. The set design and costuming are gorgeous, and there's a lot of very good detail worked into the visual space that would be hard to animate. They use their CGI well when they do use it, but a significant amount of the show seems to be practical effects and props. Additionally, Hannah John-Kamen's ability to flawlessly portray multiple characters is so good it's uncanny and makes you forget they're literally being played by the same woman. She changes her entire body language, and it's phenomenal.
Jordan Peele's entire body of horror. His films pack in so much symbolism and subtlety that I could probably watch them all a million times and still find new details. The nuance in the acting, the sheer detail packed into the costuming and set design, the use of color...god. It's unreal.
Crimson Peak, because the set design for that film...holy fuck. The costuming and set design in that film are pure gold. The acting is also phenomenal, but I could probably talk about the set design for hours. The house is a character in its own right.
Galavant and Our Flag Means Death, both for the same reason: both shows feel like I'm hanging out at a ren faire being goofy with my friends. They feel like I'm watching a LARP. They feel like they could easily exist in the same setting as Muppet Treasure Island, and at any second Kermit is going to show up and start singing, and it wouldn't be out of place at all. I think I'd also include Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves in this category, along with The Princess Bride and Labyrinth--all of which also include kickass practical effects, choreography, and costuming.
This isn't some sort of objective truth or anything. I just like that I've finally been able to nail down some reasons why I prefer animation, beyond just, "idk, cartoons are fun."

"Hold on," you might be saying, "isn't that supposed to be between your browser history and you?" Maybe so! But unfortunately for everyone, I keep a fic reading log, and that means I've got â¨statisticsâ¨! So without further ado:
Number of fics read in 2023: 748
Total words read: 10 032 841
Amount of unique authors: 169
Rereads vs new reads: 120 rereads, which makes the year total 16% rereads and 84% new reads!
I don't know what happened in the beginning of the year, but clearly I was reading A Lot of fic right then! And everybody give it up for the Explicit rating barely edging (heh) out a win over the Teen rating!
Top five tags 2023:
getting together (224 occurrences or 29.95% of the fics)
smut (216 occurrences, 28.88%)
fluff (181 occurrences, 24.20%)
established relationship (119 occurrences, 15.91%)
AU (113 occurrences, 15.11%)
Top five most read authors 2023 (rereads included):
@letmetellyouaboutmyfeels (64 fics - the "Fractals" chapters have been counted as separate entries)
@bropunzeling (32 fics)
@try-set-me-on-fire (31 fics - most of the "All my life" chapters have been counted as separate entries)
withoutthetiger aka @rewritetheending (29 fics)
@glorious-spoon (24 fics)
Top five most read fandoms 2023:
9-1-1
Hockey rpf
Summer Sons
Rebel Kings MC
A four-way tie between Captain America, Stranger Things, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, and Red, White, and Royal Blue
Big, big thanks to all the writers I've had the absolute joy and honour of reading this year! You have brought me countless hours of joy (and pain) this year, and my life wouldn't be the same without the work you do!

MY TOP TEN FILMS OF 2023 BECAUSE I KNOW YOU'RE ALL JUST SIMPLY DYING TO FIND OUT!
10 - Extraction 2. You don't need to know what it's about. You just need to know Thor engages in fisticuffs while his fricking arm is on fire.
9 - Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves
8 - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. First of 3 animated films. It's gorgeous as fuck.
7 - Scream VI. Time for this franchise to die tbh
6 - Nimona. It's so beautiful.
5 - Guardians of the Galaxy 3. I doubt Marvel will make another trilogy as good as this tbh. if Cap 1 hadn't been such a basic bitch it might have been a contender.
4 - Evil Dead Rise. Dat cheese grater scene. OOOF
3 - Barbie. I knew it was gonna be good but i didn't expect it to be THAT good. Oppenheimer is gonna steal Oscars away from this and that's an absolute crime cos it was 3 hours of absolute fucking bollocks.
2 - John Wick 4. If you don't think the Dragon's breath shotgun scene is some of the fucking wizardest shit ever put on film then you're an absolute gonk.
1 - Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. How do you improve on perfection? No idea. But this film somehow was better than the first.
AND SOME MORE!

With the amount of films i watched last year and the 2405 xbox hours played you would find it hard to believe that i have a full time job. But i do. Honestly.

Discuss. Or don't.

i'll tell you the truth (but never goodbye) by lesmiserablol
âI was ready to fight for us. I was ready to find a way, any way for us to work. And you were the one who ran away when it got too hard!â âThatâs not what happened and you know it!â Sokka snaps. âIt was never going to work, and it was stupid to keep pretending otherwise! Iâm sorry Zuko, I am, but just because you are the Fire Lord, just because weâ we were in love, everything wasnât going to magically fall into place.â Zuko still has a stubborn expression on his face. There are angry tears in his eyes when he says, âWe couldâve figured it out. We couldâveâŚbeen us. We couldâve had a good life together.â âYeah, well, I guess we wonât ever know.â (or, the twenty years between Zuko and Sokka breaking up and finally getting together again, shown in 5 times they donât say goodbye, +1 time they donât have to)
boy problems by burnt_oranges
âI accidentally signed off on an arranged marriage to Sokka,â Zuko says faintly. He sits up so fast he almost falls out of his chair. âI signed off on an arranged marriage to Sokka, and he agreed." In which Zuko suffers in a variety of ways, including but not limited to: close and constant proximity to the object of his affections, assassination attempts, and irreparable injuries to his dignity.
Yesterday is Ashes by alivingfire
Sokka takes a strategic step back, but he also smiles: triumphant, like he baited Zuko into exactly what he wanted. Like itâs a challenge. Itâs the same way he looked when they sized each other up at the prison, with Sokka in chains that left red marks around his wrist, in tattered prison garb, malnourished and angry. Back then, that was Sokka saying: I see your power. I see you. Now, see me. Zuko saw him then. And he sees him now; different, but the same. I see you. Zuko lights his daos in flame. Sokka grins, back to gravel and heat. âCome on, Fire Lord. Impress me.â Zuko burns. His vision flickers with fire. His heart races. His blood sings. His body is like a magnet, pulling ever onward to meet Sokkaâs. He advances. He pins Sokka to the wall, blades against his throat. Or, Zuko found Aang first, Sokka and Katara were imprisoned in Boiling Rock for trying to rescue their dad, and all Sokka knows is he's pretty sure he's not supposed to think the Fire Lord is attractive but he's never let things like rules stop him before.
in flammam flammasăçŤä¸ćžçŤă by ranilla_bean
Zuko scoffed. âAs always, I am the author of my own unhappiness.â Sokka hummed. âYears ago, when it was just us travelling together, we came across this fortune teller. I didnât believe any of that mumbo-jumbo. But then she said that my life would be full of struggle and anguish, most of it self-inflicted.â It suited Zukoâs life extraordinarily well, he felt. âSometimes, I feel like Iâm the only person in the Fire Nation who has a vision of what it takes for this country to get better.â Sokka turned to face him, but Zuko looked resolutely forwards. âThat canât be true.â
Zuko turns twenty-five. In spite of his best efforts, the Fire Nation seems to lurch from crisis to crisis. The firebenders have lost their flame, and the situation with the former colonies is only worsening. All the while, he's ill, lonely, and consumed by work. And on the other side of the country, Sokka has just moved in with one Master Piandao.

She opens her mouth. She closes her mouth. She instructs, âLast card.â Gansey draws. Death. Reversed. â Or a cross country road-trip, developing feelings, and the end of the world

Ed leaned forward and put his head in his hands. âThis is ridiculous. 𼤠⢠recommend an author or fanfic you love
Here's a few amazing fics in some different fandoms:
Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Edgin/Xenk: To the Ends of the Earth by @moorishflower. An AU in which Xenk comes to recruit Ed while he's in Revel's End, there's a lot of irritation, and then they discover maybe they both misjudged the other. Xenk's internal monologue is so good.
The Witcher, Aiden/Lambert, Keira/Lambert, and Aiden/Lambert/Keira: Even if you don't know anything about Keira, or don't usually read about her, the Trust series by @bomberqueen17 is a treasure. It's got nonbinary Lambert, Aiden captured by an evil sorceress, cute domesticity, and heart-wrenching misunderstandings. You can start with Very Dark Magic if you're mostly here for the Laiden of it all, but I bet you'll want to go back and read what's been going on with Lambert and Keira.
Shadow and Bone/Six of Crows, Jesper/Wylan: My Little Pony: BDSM is Magic by @sparrowmoth. I'm not saying this just because they sent this ask! If you haven't really thought pretending to be a horse could be hot, prepare to have something awakened. Also, it's tremendously sweet and the characterization is spot-on.
MCU, Bucky/Steve: Lead Me Not into Penn Station by @kaasknot has an excellent title. It's a delicious little one shot set in pre-war Brooklyn about Bucky taking Steve to the baths for a good old-fashioned gang bang.

A list of things I wanted to google when I had cell reception back. đ I cannot function without immediate access to all knowledge!
đď¸ â˘ what's your favourite type of comment to receive on your work?
All comments are cherished. One kind I really enjoy is the live slug reaction kind where people write down reactions as they go, sometimes pulling out quotes from the text that really strike them. Like, "Oh noooo that is so like them!" or "This line hits hard." Another type of comment I really enjoy is the woeful sort, usually in response to an angsty fic, i.e. "I am in a puddle on the floor of my bedroom now my heart will never be the same, brb my feelings are slowly draining into the void."
đ ⢠tag your biggest supporter(s) and say one nice thing about them
@bittylildragon is a tremendous beta and cheerleader (and writer and artist). The amount of helpful insight and criticism they have provided over the years I've known them is.... massive.
@contemplativepancakes is such a stellar commenter. I think she's commented on, like, every Witcher fic I've ever written? I always smile when I get an AO3 notification about one of her comments.
@ainawgsd is another power commenter. I always enjoy seeing their icon (is it a German Shepherd?) in the comments section.
@kuwdora is the patron saint of obscure pairings. They are always right there with incandescent joy and thoughtful comments when I post a fic for a little pool noodle of a ship.
@rubynye is a delight who is always a bright spot in my inbox. Also, there is no squee like a rubynye squee.
𧊠⢠what will make you click away from a fanfiction immediately?

Gosh I Need Movies Like "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves"!
Frankly, I'm still a bit surprised by how much I love "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves". I mean, I was very much looking forward to the movie because everything about it just felt right, and I even noticed some fear of disappointment when finally entering the cinema. But it did not disappoint. Gosh, how it did not disappoint.
There's so much for me to love about this movie. To name just three things, it has
a marvelously told story (the exposition was quite nice, but the escape from Revel's End prison really set the stage for that hell of a ride which followed),
a very inspired cast playing absolutely dashing characters (I now have a crush on at least two of the main characters! đ
), and
visual effects and set designs with creativity and attention to detail that I have not seen in what feels like an eternity (the very first shot of Neverwinter already made me want to see this city in all its lovely details).
So yes, I left the cinema as overwhelmed and enthusiastic as I had hoped to be. And much to my personal joy you guys here at Tumblr opened up just another level on which this lovely little movie could excel: I have never played "Dungeons and Dragons" (I know a lot about the mechanics and lore thanks to "Munchkin", though đ
), so reading about how much the movie feels like a true DnD session was very insightful, and it even made me see some of its flaws in a new light.
And then it struck me: "Honor Among Thieves" is that very rare type of movie that I really, really need from time to time. A true feel-good movie whose production process brought people together to tell a special story that usually has already been around in some form before. A fantastic, entertaining tale that can be enjoyed - and I cannot stress enough how important that is - utterly unironically and unapologetically.
The first movie of this type that I remember watching is "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" from 2004, and it has been one of my absolute favorites for a long, long, time. So much energy, and so much fun! But there are more. I'm talking about movies like "The Hitchhikerâs Guide to the Galaxy" (2005), "The Men Who Stare at Goats" (2009), "Tron: Legacy" (2010), "Real Steel" (2011), "John Carter" (2012), and "Booksmart" (2019). Yeah, that kinda was an advertisement for films I still have a crush on. Sorry not sorry.
The downside of this type of movie, because of course there's a downside: They only seldom make a profit. And "Honor Among Thieves" is not an exception to this rule, having grossed about 125 Million USD worldwide at the box office so far, while costing roughly 150 Million. But you know what? That's fine. Big Hollywood studios regularly make a fortune with mainstream blockbuster stuff that I don't even care to remember after I skipped the advertisement promoting it, so it's only fair for them to make a monetarily stupid decision from time to time that will make me oh so happy.
So, long story short: As long as studios like Paramount Pictures keep making marvellous darlings of a potential (or actual) flop like "Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves", I will not even begin to begrudge the obscene amounts of money they get from too-big-to-fail box office hits like "Top Gun: Maverick".

Fandom Saturday, Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves
I finally watched the movie at the behest of my husband, and it was awesome. There were a few times when the lore had me feeling a little lost, but for the most part I was able to keep up with everything. To avoid any major spoilers, I'm just going to focus on a few things I picked up on that my hubby found unique. This was his third time watching it, and now he wants to watch it again because of what I pointed out.
All the women are badass.
This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I hate it when things are one-sided. Some of the men are weak or bumbling idiots, but literally every woman in there is a badass. The wife is the sweetest motivation, the daughter is surprisingly quick witted for her age, Michelle Rodriguez is Michelle Rodriguez, the Teafling is calm and cool and obviously their trump card, the ultimate sorceress is, well, the ultimate sorceress, and this is all well and good except it's horribly unbalanced by the fact that there are no women failures, no women struggles, nothing. Like, really? It'd only be really bad if there were no equally badass men though, and thankfully there is at least one, but it's still a bit unbalanced for my taste.
Second, it is so obvious that Doric is in love with Simon.
Now, they sort of ease the shipping of these two, but to me, it was fairly obvious. This is the main reason my husband wants to watch it again. Simon is the only one she responds to 95% of the time. Sure, a fair amount of it is insults, but she only insults Simon. Edgin says something stupid, she might respond, but Simon says something, and oh, she just has to put in her two cents about what a failure he is. She's always looking at him. She stands closest to him. She is so focused on him, it's ridiculous, and when I pointed this out, Deo was... extremely surprised he hadn't picked up on that, but it was true. After that, he noticed. When >insert heartstring dramatic end here< happened, who was she snuggled up to? During the fight, she was ready, but who did she first protect? (It certainly wasn't Michelle Rodriguez, but hey, she doesn't need protection. XD) And when Simon was feeling unconfident, who was there to insult him? Hm. That's an awful lot of focus on a human, in a group of humans, that she supposedly hates. Hmmm. XD
Anyway, it could be because I'm a writer myself, but I ended up calling just about everything in the movie. Like, something comes out and I'd say "oh, that's important", or "oh, they're not gonna use it for that but this", and everything was correct, but that still didn't take away from the movie. It was a really good movie and I highly recommend it. Thank you for joining me on my first Fandom Saturday in a while. ^^

I think I am gonna make a Media thread to share what Iâve played/watched this year. It looks like a fun thing to do! (Copied from my Twitter thread)
Hereâs what I experienced in 2023
Dark Souls 2 Scholar of the first sin:
While souls games tend to be frustrating for me, they are also brilliant experiences, and I had a ton of fun with DS2! The Halbert in this game specifically is my favorite weapon in the entire series as of rn.
Neon White:
I hope everyone finds a game that fits their taste as well as Neon White fits mine. One of my new favorite games with such a satisfying sense of flow and rhythm that I couldnât put it down till I got a gold medal on every stage.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish:
I loved the TV show they did so I wasnât totally surprised but this exceeded my expectations. Gorgeous art style, fluid animation, compelling characters, and the most intimidating animated movie villain in a long time make this a winner in my book!
Bocchi the Rock Season 1:
ITâS SO CUTE AND FUN OMG!!!! A really heartfelt and well realized story with an absolute banger soundtrack. I loved every single character and every single episode so much, itâs truly an amazing show!

Elden Ring:
This game is scary in how good it is. Itâs massive, intensely difficult, detailed, and beautifully crafted. Itâs so much that Iâm inclined to say itâs too much. But too much of a masterpiece is still a masterpiece. Iâm carrying this victory with me for a long time.

Transistor:
Holy wow, I havenât been surprised by a game like this in awhile! Itâs an extremely well designed tactical action game with an unconventional narrative structure and absolutely killer visuals and music. Iâll definitely consider returning for another run later on!
Summer Wars:
An absolute rollercoaster of a movie. I really enjoyed the family dynamic and the different ways the story unfolded. It wasnât what I expected at all and I think it was better for it. The visual design is incredible too! Itâs very pleasant to look at. A fun movie!!

Journey:
Iâve rarely seen a game so perfectly titled. It was a true journey. It was an experience that was unique to me and my own playthrough. Thatâs what I think is truly special about this game. The people you meet and the way you progress while linear is truly your own
John Wick 4:
Absolutely lives up to the quality of this series. John wick continues to impress me with its action choreography and cinematography. This entry specifically has a strong set of side characters, some excellent music compositions, and amazing settings. Loved this one!
Portal 2 (Co-op):
I played the single player years ago but I finally got to finish the co-op campaign and it was a blast!!! Portal is one of if not the most satisfying puzzle games Iâve played. Reminds me how much of a classic this one is. Shoutout to my cousin for joining me!
Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves:
A really enjoyable action comedy movie! It did a good job capturing the dynamic of a dnd party. A super fun time with genuine humor, great performances all around, and the appropriate amount of chaos for a movie in the dnd universe.
The Super Mario Bros Movie:
A solid film! The Music stole the show for me, Peach and Bowser were huge highlights and Luigi and Toad had great performances too! I was disappointed by the Kongs voices but itâs a film with a lot of love for the series in there! Peach is great btwđ
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom :
This game somehow impresses today in the same way botw does. The improvements rocket this game into the stratosphere. While i suffered the same fatigue I did with Elden ring at the end, I also found myself in awe almost the entire time

Spider Man: Across the Spiderverse :
I um, donât know what to say. Visual feast, extremely compelling plot, character work that hit so so hard, an animated movie the likes of which Iâve never seen. Just incredible
Barbie Movie:
It was so incredibly fun. I had a good few laughs and it had really compelling characters. Very appropriately campy with the depth to back up the camp. A well made film
Cassette Beasts:
What a fantastic game. It recaptured the magic I havenât felt since playing PokĂŠmon platinum for the first time. Itâs battle system is so engaging, story filled with mystery, characters absolutely lovely, and a world that is just the right size for exploring. đ
