The Fall of Throm Zar
Throm Zar was not the largest of the cities built by the Veilborn. But it was first. Before Septarchs, before Veilborn were the dominant faces of Asterta. Throm Zar, built in a place too arid and dry for any but those gifted in the incredible command of magic that the Veilborn had.
In the years since the Sundering began, and the Betrayer began this campaign of genocide, more and more people have flocked to Throm Zar. Seeking guidance, seeking assurance, protection, resources.
Whole nations have been shattered in your conflict with the Betrayer. You started in the wake of the Fallen Entity, you gathered all the arcane might you could muster. You sent legions of Warforged to slow them, your future- your eternity, now bent on killing your past. You unleashed coruscating waves of fire, frost, great storms, beasts, even the power of the planes themselves. And all you bought was time, at the cost of every land you called home, and the very people you swore to defend and uplift.
Rumors say the Betrayer had found allies now. Seven of them. An irony that has not escaped some of you. They kill and destroy all your monuments, all your great works, all of your peoples. Death follows them, and none more than the Betrayer himself. Any attempt at parlay has been rebuffed, asking for reasoning is out of the question. What reasoning could there be to justify the deaths of 300,000 brothers and sisters. What insanity would quiet 300,000 minds, all of whom could feel the death knell of the others? What justification could be made for this violence? What can stop them?
The scene before you reminds you that the Sundering as people have begun to call it, is not one event. It’s many. The dangers and problems abound, aftershocks from the implacable foe that hunts your blood and commits genocide against your people.
Ash and smoke choke the air over the spires and rooftops and floating gardens of Throm Zar. The sky is a burned red. A purple wound ripples in the air above the city, an open gaping gash in reality, it’s tattered edges crumbling open further and further as the wound grows. Within, something writhes. It’s pressing outwards, spilling, like malignant blood into the streets below. It’s all too familiar to the night it all began. With one difference. This time you’re going to stop it.
Author Note: This is the opening to a session I ran a few months ago. In this campaign, the Eldritch Soul Campaign, my players have two characters. A high level group from far in the past, whose memories live in the bodies of their primary characters. In this way, they are both experiencing and creating the history that effects their current troubles and circumstances. Being able to tell stories within stories and find places to allow the narrative of my games to shift between timelines or away from the main heroes to provide my players a broader and deeper understanding of what’s happening in the world and the far reaching effects that have reached them has been an incredible challenge but also an incredible boon to the way this game has been played. My players have created circumstances in one shot games that connect to the main plotline- that their characters rediscover in the main plot. The effects of what the Septarchs have done resonate in the world 1000+ years later. It’s like… deconstructing a mystery from both ends. I’m going to try to post more like this soon.

Ever since you left, I can't stop thinking of the moment I saw your figure disappear among the crowd that entered the vessel. I didn't want to stop looking at you, I didn't want that fickle line of sight to be broken, so I caught myself desiring to meticulously examine every fraction of the seconds that passed while my eyes met your beautiful hair, or any remnant of your presence I could find, for that matter. I wanted to be Achiles, and your departure, the tortoise. But sadly it was not so, at a given time I met the tortoise, and by the gods I do not wish such feelings of emptyness on anyone. As value that is created by the working force is not rewarded to them. Instead only guarantees enough for them to survive and work more. It's like slavery but with extra steps. So anyhow, how's your day going?"
211. "You know, that reminds me that sometimes, violence is the necessary. Sometimes the only path to redemption for the sins of ignorance is to face the fundamental truth of blood and fire. As they meet the primordial within their heartbeat, the oppressors might have a chance to understand the pain they caused and atone for their sins. Also have you seen the new play at the theater?"
212. "You think we're equals? I had to battle struggles you've never imagined. I became this while fearing the night, disguising myself as a man just to travel safely. I survived because I was cursed to live as I am among those I swore to protect, only to be seen as their enemy."

215. "This is your home. If you want to fight to defend it, that's your choice. I'd be honoured to stand alongside you. The enemy attacks tomorrow. He's brutal and fights only to kill, which is why he will never defeat us. Look around. In this circle, we're all equals. You're not fighting because someone's ordering you to, you're fighting for so much more than that. You fight for your homes. You fight for your family. You fight for your friends. You fight for the right to grow crops in peace. And if you fall, you fall fighting for the noblest of causes: fighting for your very right to survive! And when you're old and grey, you'll look back on this day, and you'll know you earned the right to live every day in between! So you fight! For your family! For your friends! For Ealdor!"
216. "I can't blame you for wanting to know yourself better, it was one of the biggest pleasures of my life"
217. "The pain of your absence is sharp and haunting, and I would five anything to not know it; anything but never knowing you at all I can only hope that you are safe, wherever you are"
218. "This song is new to me, but I am honored to be part of it"
219. "It's tempting to linger in this moment, but unless they are collapsed by an observer, they will never be more than that, only possibilities"
220. "Are you still here? I am unsure how to survive in a universe without you, I am unsure how to be me without you"
221. "Is the hardest part of this tragedy not knowing who we may have lost? or will the hardest part come later, when we learn?"
222. "Speak, mortal. You have reached Tharvek, Devourer of Innocents and Wielder of Eternal Flames. It appears I have missed your pitiful attempt at contact. Leave your name, teleportation runes, preferred genre of torment, shoe size, allegiance, deepest fears, vulnerabilities, complete medical history, and where you summoned the gall to disturb me. I may choose to acknowledge your existence, but not by such mundane means. Thank you, and remember: tread carefully, for death lurks at every shadowed crossing."
223. "I see someone making through, you just need to be sure it is you"
224. "You are no saint; you're just indifferent. You aid all without caring who they've wronged or what evil they've wrought. You place the wicked among those who shelter you. Even the gods' love is not unconditional, and neither should ours be."
225. As the hag's gaze pierces through the darkness, her voice resonates with an otherworldly chill. "You feel it, don't you? The knot tightening around your throat, the sharp claws of dread digging into your chest, the icy tendrils slithering down your spine? That's the sensation of being forsaken, of standing alone in the void, unnoticed by the gods. Even your soul quivers, knowing that no divine intervention will come to your aid. You're trapped in a blind spot, unseen by the greater powers." Her words hang heavy in the air, suffocating the very essence of hope. "And yet, you cling to your righteous desires, your noble quest to save your friends. But can you be certain that your gods will forgive such a pact with a creature like me? Your actions may be seen as a grievous offense, a betrayal of everything they hold dear. Will they not turn their backs on you? And this dread that gnaws at your spirit, it will not dissipate once you leave this place. It will cling to you like a curse, haunting your every step until the day you finally rest in your grave, a constant reminder of the darkness that lurks within your soul."
226. "In this life, we traverse like a canoe upon deep waters. Our passage ripples the surface briefly, yet the depths remain undisturbed. With time, the surface quiets once more, leaving no trace of our journey."
227. Isabelle-"Such is the reason thine footwear is rugged." Elena-"Such is the reason thine mother is deceased." Isabelle-"..." Elena-"Deceased as The Nine Hells." Isabelle-"...Gods above." Elena-"Pray tell, what manner of footwear hath she? In her grave?" Isabelle-"..." Elena-"Such is why thine greatmother lacketh knees, and she cannot petition the Lord, wench. How now? She cannot skip as the Elven." Isabelle-"Dismount my carriage!" Elena-"Such is why thy babe, hath a glass eye, and when she weepeth, thou must polish it with lye, wench." Isabelle-"Dismount at once!" Elena-"I'll exit thine carriage. Flank!"
228. "You are a coward wearing the facade of a revolutionary."
229. "What is better - to be born good, or to overcome your evil nature through great effort?"
230. "I will face the god and walk backwards into hell."
231. "The man who sleeps on the floor cannot fall out of bed."
232. "The man who sleeps with a machete is a fool every night but one."
233. "For every person who dreams up a butter knife, there is a person who dreams up a poisoned dagger."
234. "Only the truly dead have seen the end of war."
235. "Does the archer fear his bow? Or does he kiss each arrow goodbye as it marries the wind?"
236. "These feelings can eat away at you, chip away the parts of you that you once held dear and defined you. You remember a time where you felt more complete, had stronger relationships and felt more loved."
237. "To be tall is not a virtue, to be short is not a sin."
238. "Power comes in a response to a need, not desire. You have to create that need."
239. "You can't kill me in a way that matters."
240. "Do what you must, I have already won."
241. "Stand in the ashes of a trillion dead souls and ask the ghosts if honor matters. The silence is your answer."
242. "Darkness without light is an abyss. Light without darkness is blinding. You cannot have a coin with only one side."
243. "When they burned Ioun's Archive, the crowd revelled in horrible disbelief. They understood that there was something older than wisdom, and it was fire, and something truer than words, and it was ashes, and something more eternal than knowledge, and it was death."
244. "I can no longer be a liberator for people who refuse to see their chains."
245. "You could sooner divert a river from its corse than deny my nature."
246. "Violence for violence is the rule of beasts."
247. "The only universal langue is blood and flames, we all have spoken this language and felt the fear of words older than our desires."
248. "The fire of extravagance can never burn simplicity."
249. "A mind unprepared for freedom will shatter like glass when shown cosmos without restriction."
250. "I have been cursed by my hubris, and my work will never be finished."
251. "I would rather die standing than live kneeling."
252. "For even the most banal of deaths can be made tragic by a broken heart."
253. "To love someone is to turn around. To love someone is to look at them."
254. "There's no cheerful somebody waiting for you at that alter. There is no meaning your alphabet soup. There is a right to obey."
255. "The foulest insults you hurl with intent to wound will calmly settle at the earth beneath my feet, and the venom you spit will bring all the pain of a warm summer breeze. You are less than you can concieve, while I carry on, brmmming with joy distilled from detatchment."
256. "They Killed the best of us, so they are stuck with the worst of us."
257. "There is no truer hatred than the way men love."
258. "Would you spit in the face of the god's designs by referring to a mountain as a hill?"
259. "If i lay one brick down at a time who are you to tell me I'm not building a house?"
260. "True love graced you with its presence and you turned its intimacy into a joke to be shared with the world."
261. "To enter is to be forgiven of the greatest sin, to leave is to repeat it. Would you dwell in this garden, or would you forsake it, for man deserveth not his paradise lost?"
262. "She was wild, crazy, ravenous and beautiful. But we simple mortal men who have lived know better than to chase things described as those."
263. "I live outside of the gods' sight and by consequence outside of their love."
264. "This is war. War does not determine who is right, only who is left."
265. "I'm a man dying of thirst watching another man drown."

My life’s been a lie. I need to know where the misconception that Mickbell & Kuro open a noodle shop post-canon comes from
Kuro and Mickbell’s profiles both talk about it as if it’s a store that sells a bit of everything. A variety store, なんでも屋。
Mickbell’s sentence on the topic is 現在はクロとともに、なんでも屋を営んでいる。 And Kuro’s is 現在もミックベルにこき使われつつ、いっしょになんでも屋を営む。 No mention of noodles whatsoever. "Currently running an all-purpose shop with Kuro." "He is still being worked hard by Mickbell, and together they run a store that sells everything."
I thought maybe the confusion was because Mithrun’s profile had a similar wording that made people think it was the same thing, but Mithrun’s line straight up doesn’t mention anything about a store or noodles either, so. The assumption that Mithrun opens a noodle shop is fully from the comic about Fleki asking Mithrun to be pardoned, where really he only says offhandedly he’ll try making some.
Mick and Kuro’s Knicks Knacks!! It does suit them real well. I just wonder where they get their stock…

The Common Language(TM)
Saw a post trying to explain how Common (a... common language) exists in fantasy settings and (I assume) DnD. I personally disagreed with OP's interpretations as they funneled explanations into two camps:
-Humans are so imperialist they made everyone else speak it (a travesty to act like humans are the center of the universe again)
-All languages form Common out of trade necessity, BUT the words contributed retreat into fantasy stereotypes (orcs are warriors, elves are artisan waifs, etc.). Which, IDK guys, at best it comes across as over-explaining US English with extra steps and baggage.
Now personally, I treat languages in my own campaign as mostly geological*- because I'm running a campaign, not writing a book/wiki/conlang.
*A few languages are bound to their speakers simply because they don't have humanoid mouths, eg: Primordial is spoken by Elementals, AKA sentient elements, etc.
Naturally, this led to wondering how the existence of Common could be a larger feature that could be interacted with. While conlangs can be fun, they are often treated as fossils when players probably prefer to walk among dinosaurs.
Note: This is written through the lens of DnD/a fantasy TTRPG, but it could probably function elsewhere with mindful tweaks., build according to your preferences.
In this scenario, all cultural languages exist, but a reverse tower of babel situation occurred. So now the world has a large magical tower that gifts all sentient humanoids (PCs/NPCs) with Common.
For World Flavor:
The immediate obvious possibility is that several nations/peoples agreed to collaborate on this, it's up to you if any individuals are named. But since it was so long ago, that might be lost to time. Or maybe it was recently completed! Regardless, is the tower a Wonder that is communally protected or does this responsibility fall on a certain group?
Or is the Tower Divine? A gift from a god of language, a god of peace or something else entirely (a god of venom who wanted to afford all mortals the ability to hurt each other with words, etc.)? If it is divine, what is the story that explains it? Is there a faith that worships the Tower (and its god)? How do people who may dislike this god reconcile the benefits of the Tower with their distaste for the deity?
Or is it an (inter)national archaeological mystery that is currently being studied? What has been hindering progress? Is it people (who has right over this) or something more otherworldly (supernatural defenses)?
Or maybe it really is just a funny little quirk of the world- a team of wizards bestowed the world with a lingua franca for an easier conference since they don't have time to learn other languages, back to other stuff!
For Conflicts/Hooks:
Is it housed in the current world's seat of power (or was a superpower built around it)? Is this fact used as a Divine Right to be an Authority over others?
Are new words added? Does this affect magic with Verbal Components? Is this how the world's spells are created? Are expeditions sent into the Tower to attempt to add more spells? Have magical words (spells) been lost (or removed)? Does this mean the Tower is ALSO the world's seat of magic?
Can Mundane words be lost? Does this somehow erase *all* instances of this written word? Or does it remove their inherent meaning and Essence (eg: if the word Sweet was lost, would all things cease to be sweet or would sweetness slowly bleed out of the world as sweet and its synonyms are eroded? How would the remaining languages try to preserve this concept in reaction to the Tower?
Was this word loss an accident or intentional?
Is this aspect abused? Is/has it been used as a political weapon/threat? How does exterior damage to the tower, if it can suffer any, affect the language it actively imbues in people? Or does it merely impact how effective its power is?
Or is the Tower decaying and there is a lingual epidemic where communication is collapsing in places that have become overly reliant on the Common provided by the Tower? What do attempts to fix the Tower look like? If the Tower is Divine in origin, how do the pious interpret this development (a test, malice from another god, etc)?
Is a lack of Common in a person used as a pretense to do harm to them? Is it used as 'evidence' to strip them of rights/dignit? Or is speaking Common a litmus for adulthood (eg: babies babble, adults converse, etc.)? How does this belief affect Mute or Deaf people?
Are there people that believe in the superiority of a Cultural Language (since they equate effort to value and Common requires 'no effort')? Are there people that consider Common to be a mark of a lack of intelligence?
Is there an effective range to the Tower? Is there a material or other phenomena that interferes with the Tower's effect on people? How would the PCs react to suddenly being unable to speak Common within their own party for a scenario?
How would anyone react if mundane livestock suddenly spoke? What if fields of plants started screaming?
Would anyone seek a way to sever the tower's influence from themselves (or others)? If the Tower can magically/divinely influence people with the ability to use Common, what else can it do? Would someone ever seek to alter this aspect of the Tower? Could they use it to continuously, universally emit healing? What about silence? (Is the Tower simply automatically converting all words to Common, effectively robbing all the intricacies of natural cultural languages?)
Would there be a reason to destroy this tower? Who would benefit from it (culturally/politically/etc.)? How would the world be changed if it was suddenly destroyed? Who would attempt to fix it? Could it even be fixed?
For Mechanics:
Some challenge uses have already been suggested above with Common Language and/or Verbal Magic dead zones.
But more cut and dry mechanics could tie to how Silence, Comprehend Languages and other linguistically-tied spells tap into/invoke the Tower and even require a nonstandard component.
Additionally, maybe this is where the Power Words (Kill, Heal, Stun, etc.) originated from and can only be found there- and what if there are more?
If you wanted to get cheeky you could probably attribute other word/language spells (Healing Word, etc.) to the Tower, but every table is different.
Hopefully this inspires some fun at the table. Or if you're already running a campaign, you can downsize this effect to a dungeon/wizard's tower/town.
This idea is of course free for use, and if you do use it, please share your story of how it played out! Have fun o/

DnD antagonist idea: a cult that worships the DM.
They see everyone and everything in their world, including the gods, as extensions of the will of a God Above Gods. However, there are a select few people who aren’t born of its will. Beings created and controlled by other higher beings.
Unlike the avatars of gods, they aren’t too far off from an ordinary being. However when they kill, they grow more powerful. The cult calls these beings Violators.
Their greatest goal is to kill these Violators and give the God Above Gods full power over its own realm. Only problem is that they don’t know who they are, but they do know they lurk among the common people…
They’ve narrowed it down to those who kill as a profession and mass murderers, since a being who grows stronger through killing would logically want to kill more. In areas that lack mercenaries and militaries, this cult actually acts as a secretive peacekeeping force.

I just started running a new D&D campaign for the first time in a year. It's a space western with heavy fantasy horror elements. Basically trying to fuse the energy of Firefly/Cowboy Bebop's scrappy bounty hunters with Star Wars/The Locked Tomb's sprawling space empires, noble houses, and spooky space magic/undead abominations. The first session was last night and oh my god we are off to such a good start. The set-up for this campaign is just a cocktail of all my favorite things. I'm playing with four of my friends and I am so in love with their characters.
The party is a disgraced reporter that has to work for fantasy Buzzfeed now (rogue), a wide eyed debutant with dreams of writing a novel (fighter), a thri-kreen bounty hunter desperate for work who constantly tries and fails to keep his head down (artificer), and an extremely cursed gothic man scamming everyone he can as he flees to the edge of the galaxy (warlock). I kept the first session pretty chill just giving them a chance to interact and poke into the weird tension building on the train they were on (a train robbery that quickly turned into an intense haunting). I genuinely can't remember the last time I laughed so hard the party banter was so electric. They've really gotten me back into the flow of things I forgot how much I adore being a Dungeon Master. They take everything I put down and make it a thousand times better. I'm editing poetry today but my brain just keeps drifting back to the session and all the horrors I'll get to unleash on these broke gay space cowboys.
We had a deliberately lackluster interview between the reporter and the bounty hunter, the debutant got scammed twice within like thirty minutes, a robot got roughed up by cavalry guys, the characters drew horny fanart of each other in game, and now everyone is about to get eaten by space ghouls.
I can't say much about what's to come because I know some of the friends in this game will see this, so I just want to say: I'm sorry I filled the train with ghosts. Try not to die.
(I'm just rambling about my session at this point, but I had such a good time and I'm so excited to be back in the saddle as a DM. Also I'm so thrilled to get to channel my Locked Tomb obsession into something and this campaign has given me a lot of fuel)
EDIT: I ENDED UP MAKING A SIDEBLOG FOR THIS CAMPAIGN. @yeehaw-in-magic-space is where I'll be recounting details about each session and offering little drops of lore when I feel like it. I think this will be a fun side project and a great way for me to record the campaign for myself to look back on.
#dungeons & dragons#d&d#d&d 5e#dungeon master#ttrpg#tabletop games#I might end up ranting about this campaign a lot we'll see#this is probably the closest I'll get to running a straight up locked tomb D&D campaign... unless#space western#space fantasy#the locked tomb#am I legally allowed to tag the locked tomb? I've been thinking about those books every step of writing this campaign#but that might only seem relevant to me so I guess sorry if this is out of place#yeehaw in magic space#entombedpost

Made this meme after realizing that four of the most prominent pcs from my motw campaign were physically disabled, and three of those were from in game injuries I gave them. (One started off the game with a facial difference from an encounter with a pyromancer she had as a kid in her backstory. The next one was defended (literally had his ears erased) by a magical axe. Another had her arm cut off in a fight with Jeff the Killer. And another lost their hand in a fight with the bbeg.)
Not wanting disabled people in ttrpgs isn't a desire for realism it's a fear of realism.

Character Arcs in Collaborative Storytelling and TTRPG
One thing that is very important to every story is character arcs! A character that starts at the exact place they end is in most cases a boring character. Growth and change is crucial to telling a good story! However when playing TTRPG and games about collaborative storytelling, it can be hard to balance giving players chances to feel powerful, and giving them chances to see how unpowerfull they really are; growth comes from conflict and strife after all. There's also the challenge of not giving one player the whole spotlight, which can be hard when focusing on certain character arcs.
Having compelling and satisfying character arcs shouldn't just fall on the GM/Storyteller. As GM it is your job to give your players situations that force them to make difficult decisions. As a player it is your job to make interesting choices, not always the best ones. Remember, your character is flawed, it's much less interesting to always know what to do, or the best choice to make. I personally believe playing TTRPGs from a lense of telling interesting stories is really fun!
Balancing character focus can definitely be tricky, but a way to rectify that is to tie each players' character arcs together in meaningful ways. That can be as simple as making sure every character has equal presence, or as complex as weaving back stories and personal NPCs together. Players can also choose to take a more supporting role in another players character arc, and then getting your own time and support later.
Creating a compelling story together can be a tricky thing, but with communication and cooperation you can make great stories together. What are your thoughts on character arcs in collaborative storytelling?

I've been collecting some random quotes I found around the internet and use in my dnd games
Here are some I found in no specific order:
2. "Are you aiming for greatness or avoiding disapointment"
3. "Si operarii omnes producunt, omnia operariis pertinent."
4. "what do you think it means to be saved"
5. "What happened?" - "Nothing that wasn't my fault"
6. "Something is different"
7. "I don't think so, but i do think that the growing control of those that have the power over the means of production is a threat to the autonomy of the people. As value that is created by the working force is not rewarded to them. Instead only guarantees enough for them to survive and work more. It's like slavery but with extra steps. So anyhow, how's your day going?"
9. "You think we're equals? I had to battle struggles you've never imagined. I became this while fearing the night, disguising myself as a man just to travel safely. Our similarities end when you learned to fight your enemies, while I had to fight comrades who left me with scars that will never heal. I survived because I was cursed to live as I am among those I swore to protect, only to be seen as their enemy."
10. "The universe is and we are"
11. "We do not have much connection, you and I. Still this encounter feels special, I hope you do not mind if I think of you as a friend"
13. "I can't blame you for wanting to know yourself better, it was one of the biggest pleasures of my life"
14. "The pain of your absence is sharp and haunting, and I would five anything to not know it; anything but never knowing you at all I can only hope that you are safe, wherever you are"
15. "This song is new to me, but I am honored to be part of it"
16. "It's tempting to linger in this moment, but unless they are collapsed by an observer, they will never be more than that, only possibilities"
17. "Are you still here? I am unsure how to survive in a universe without you, I am unsure how to be me without you"
18. "Is the hardest part of this tragedy not knowing who we may have lost? or will the hardest part come later, when we learn?"
19. "I see someone making through, you just need to be sure it is you"
20. "You are no saint; you're just indifferent. You aid all without caring who they've wronged or what evil they've wrought. You place the wicked among those who shelter you. Even the gods' love is not unconditional, and neither should ours be."
22. "In this life, we traverse like a canoe upon deep waters. Our passage ripples the surface briefly, yet the depths remain undisturbed. With time, the surface quiets once more, leaving no trace of our journey."
23. "You are a coward wearing the facade of a revolutionary."
24. "What is better - to be born good, or to overcome your evil nature through great effort?"
25. "I will face god and walk backwards into hell."
26. "The man who sleeps on the floor cannot fall out of bed."
27. "The man who sleeps with a machete is a fool every night but one."

Lines of dialogue that have been floating around in my head recently:
“This feels like a trap…fuck it let’s go.”
“You’re in love with me?…like me as in the person standing right in front of you?”
“Who does this tiny human belong to and why is it drooling?”
“I’d love you for the rest of my life if you’d let me.”
“This isn’t what it looks like…or maybe it is? It really just depends on what you think…this...looks like.”
“What are you doing on my porch at five in the morning?”
“Well great you’ve made me go and fall in love with you and now everything is ruined.”
