Made these babies this week! I needed some quick and dirty paperbacks to write all over while I reread in preparation for new Book 5 chapters dropping šŸ˜…šŸ˜…šŸ˜… Use your covers as inspiration and am so happy to have a physical copy of this incredible work. Iā€™m very excited to make some beautiful hardbacks when the series is complete!
HOLY SHIT

was kinda thinking about this when I saw Renee Rapp live recently-- I didn't know her visual vibe, I'd heard a few songs here and there but I hadn't really *seen* her, and her attire at Osheaga was really casual, a jersey (baseball/basketball?) and slacks. And that was so amazing! I couldn't help thinking, the work Billie Eilish has done for how women in pop music are allowed to dress is incredible. Seeing her up there all comfortable you just know that Billie walked in her oversized tops so that Renee in her slacks could run; Billie walked through all the critcisms about how she dressed slobbily and having to assert that she didn't owe anyone a display of skin, so that Renee could be comfortable and unquestioned running up and down the catwalk in front of 10,000 people. How iconic.
And I don't think we even realised at the time how much something as simple as letting Billie dress the way she as a (then-) 17-year-old teenager dressed, could end up meaning for a future generation of women in music.
Obviously there is still way to go, there were weirdos complaining about how 'plain' Dua Lipa's Glastonbury outfit was this year (in 2024!!), l have to ask, are you at Paris Fashion Week?? She is the musical HEADLINER of an entire day of music at one of the biggest music festivals in the world, and you can't grant her the space to exist as an artist, you have to moan about her dress not being excitingly revealing enough. There's work to do, it's still dismal out there. But the space Billie Eilish has created for a most ordinarily-dressed woman popstar is still heartening.
#music#rambling away; I'll log off#man. I remember how on the other hand when I was going to my first ever gig my guitar teacher said to me#notice how plainly he's dressed? No frills. His music speaks for himself.#(The musician in question was Slash and apart from his very recognisable hat and sunglasses; he was wearing a plain white t-shirt with a#minnie mouse graphic print in the centre. I think sometimes about how not even women in rock music are afforded that.#Like this is a thing across genres#With the exception of Franz Ferdinand for whom Alex has actually said in interviews that they treated FF gigs as nights out#and so dressed like they'd be dressed for a club night out--#most other guy bands are like *picked a tee off the floor*#whereas the girls in bands I've seen-- even literally just local musicians-- the girls in our local rock bands feel compelled to#dress like it's graduation day#Like we had this really cool local band-- singer's a girl in second year of uni#keeping up with the fact that they were playing like RHCP and Muse covers on stage; fast stuff--#she was up there in a delicate dress and heels and stomping across stage n all#and the rest of her band; dudes; were quite comfortable in their t-shirts#like of course she made a choice herself and was more than capable of stomping in heels--I mean I've seen Phoebe from Lambrini Girls#JUMP OFF a 5-ft platform stage while wearing 3-inch block heels. And in a party dress!#But then again Lambrini Girls genuinely are freaks of nature and I envy anyone who's going to see them open for Amyl & the Sniffers rn#bc that's an EXPLOSIVE combo. Nonetheless. I was saying.#Part of it certainly comes from a normalisation of just superhuman strength; balance + praying there's no malfunction with your skirt#which DOES happen at rock shows more frequently than you'd imagine. It's just if you're in a good crowd they'll pretend they saw nothing#but it's certainly more practical to gig in sneakers and trousers lol. From experience!#billie eilish#renee rapp#women in music#pop music#dua lipa#Also like Billies doing it for the pop lesbians#lesbian

I just looked at the price on the back of a book Iā€™ve had for a bit over a decade and it was four. fucking. dollars. Just four with no taxes. No extra 97cents or something before taxes. Just a round number that you would add taxes to.
I googled the price of a new edition and it was almost thirteen! Not an even thirteen, it was like 12.96 or something. Close enough that itā€™s basically thirteen but if youā€™re adding multiple items together to try and get the price on a purchase with more items it would add more confusion.
#emma posts#it was also a bit difficult to find a new copy on my phone#the edition I have was selling for wildly varying prices as a vintage book now#but thatā€™s just a kids chapter book from a fairly large publisher#I know inflation happens and stuff but holy shit#buying things at the book fair makes so much more sense now#I bought that for 4$ plus taxes at the schoolastic book fair#it was maybe 12 years ago?#I could look at the publishing date for a better idea#the series had just switched publishers and the first few were being re-released at the time#before the new publisher and the author finished the series#four dollars though#I had to check the book because I know the current price of many paperbacks and I knew that series was still in print#but what lead to this was the price tag falling off an old brush I found from like. 2009 or 2010#and the tag on this very large brush was seven dollars#which seemed cheap so I looked at current brush prices online but since the exact same brush isnā€™t being sold and brush prices vary more#it was a bit harder for me to get an idea of it. books though. books I know#Iā€™ve even bought stuff from that publisher recently (they have a lot of novel and comic translations)#but it also struck me how the old price tag was an even four and an even seven dollars but all new ones had 97 or 98 cents#that ten dollars from helping out grandma wouldnā€™t have even gotten me one book with modern prices#but back then I could get TWO#even just seven could have gotten me a book and some fun school supplies back then#to have that experience now you would need to give your kid a 20$#I understand inflation okay? I am just taken off guard rn and having realizations#Iā€™m going to add to this post again. when I say wildly varied vintage prices I mean WILDLY varied#one dude was trying to sell it on Amazon for 55$ but on eBay it was 4 to 5$#I bought the next three books in the series from that same print. signed. for 13$ together#I had older editions of those and wanted a full series of just the ones that were being re-released during my reading time

gonna be real bud if your fic relies so heavily on intense triggering themes and shock value that you're averse to putting warnings on it to "maintain surprise" and "avoid spoilers", then you act like you did nothing wrong when people are upset that you didn't make any effort to turn them away and allow them to protect themselves, while also telling them it's their fault that they read something that upset them when they could have never known it contained specific things that will upset them, i think you are a tar pit
#'warnings are a courtesy!!' yes so why are you apparently averse to being courteous#saying omg fanfiction never used to warn people and print books never warn people so it's not a bad thing if i don't warn you!#that's some 'no one protected me so why should i protect you' type shit#sorry i got recommended this dumb ass post and i had to say something so i'm saying it here#why are you telling people to curate their own experiences while actively making it more difficult to curate their experiences LMFAO#if i read a scene with intensely triggering content without knowing it was there before. 'just closing the book' or 'hitting the back butto#is not protecting myself. how do i protect myself from something I've already read???#diary#like dude it's possible to protect people from spoilers while also protecting people from seeing things that will distress them#i also honestly take issue with people who do a content warning but just say ā€œthis gets into some shitā€ or something of the like.#you might as well have just not said anything because now i'm confused and on edge#instead of able to protect myself properly i have to try and gauge my personal sensitivity against the unknowable factor of#what your idea of ā€œsome shitā€ is#also telling someone to 'just close the book lol' is an incredibly dismissive approach to people being affected by something triggering#you know these things do happen to people in real life. right. but of course who would have empathy for someone who doesn't want to be#reminded of trauma

the dumbest thing I've learned about packaging is that I have only really learned how to properly read and open packaging *after having worked with packaging design* and now I'm just like inspecting things for "where the rest of the perf marks are".
(realisations sponsored by the third packet of meds upon which I finally FINALLY located the rest of the perf lines that go with the semi-circle punch out. These are dumb why are so many packaging devices *dumb*)

House of leaves really did alter my brain's code. I didn't really believe yall for a while.
#wacky watermelons#apologies for the bluening of house (blue)#feels fitting to do so for a post talking about house (blue) making me feel more eel than previously#genuinely i see footnotes and some part of my brain always goes 'ahh. yes. just like house (blue)' and i have to smack it#it rerouted how my brain processes and appreciates horror#...#this was saved in my drafts and im bringing it back bc i was watching myhouse.wad videos#one of the guys apparently finished house (blue) like a week before he played the map and I must say#thats gotta be a fucked up head space to play that game in.#genuinely no horror yt video has unsettled me as the labyrinth (??) part of the doom house (blue)#similarly allusions so heavy handed they're basically recreations aren't usually ny thing#but esp the doors. it fucking got me. certainly helps that that was easily the most fucked part of the book imo#still. house (blue) is one of those things that I thought was over hyped until I actually experienced it#i might buy my own copy but. ah fuck. jesus christ. dude its 55 god damn dollars on amazon. what the hell#i guess hard cover 400+ big dense pages of print fuckery and colored text but still#anyway. house (blue) will live in my head for a long while. its a good book. even if it swings wildly#from a drug trip to pure horror to confusing to just. a little silly#by the end I think I understood the truant head space just a little. just a little.#plus we can add houses (blue (I think)) to the list of inanimate things that I have weird brain things with. like with eyes. iykyk.

Lemme tell you a gay little story about an eagle.
Our town (~9,000 people) has a couple garages, but there's a big one on the main drag. My family has been going there for decades. I drive past it every day.
There used to be a huge pine tree on the corner of their lot, but last year it became a hazard and had to be taken down.
Shortly thereafter I drive by and see they've hired a guy to chainsaw sculpt the stump into a bald eagle.
Tumblr media
Birds own my heart, but nationalism makes me twitchy. I withhold outright condemnation of the eagle, but I'm skeptical. (The original ownerā€”an objectively Good Dudeā€”sold the business to a younger couple a few years ago, and I don't have any knowledge of their whole deal.)
Then it turns out someone on staff is really into making costumes for the eagle. Every holiday. Every month. Stuffed turkey, witch costume, menorah headpiece, bunny ears. These people love to dress their bird.
Tumblr media
The changing of the eagle suit becomes a source of joy every time I drive through town.
Until June, when the eagle is bare.
Now look, maybe I'm expecting too much asking my garage to celebrate Pride. But this is a small town. Every time I drive by that stupid eagleā€”this thing that has previously brought me so much joyā€”I feel hurt. I feel reminded that there are plenty of people in my liberal bubble who don't consider my community worthy of celebration. I drive to work, I feel bad. I drive home, I feel bad. The eagle is mocking me.
Then my A/C quits working.
So I book an appointent to bring my car inā€”and realize what I have to do.
Tumblr media
I pick all this up at a thrift store for under ten bucks. I print the shirt with some weird heat-transfer fabric crayons I find in a cupboard. I loop gold elastic around the sunglasses and pray they'll fit on the eagle's head. (It is also important to draw your attention to the price of the feather boa.)
Tumblr media
(Nice.)
My reasoning is thus: if I show up with a complete costume ready to go, someone will have to look me in the eye and say "We don't believe in that," at which point I'll be finding a new garage. But if they let me dress the eagle, then people in town get to have the joy I've been missing since the start of the month.
I listen to a lot of hype-up jams on my way over. I hate confrontation. I also don't wanna have to find another garage. I want to believe that this decision isn't actively antagonistic, but I'm not particularly hopeful.
I talk through the A/C issue with the guy at the desk, hand over my keys, then take a deep breath.
"Who's in charge of the eagle?"
"Oh, that's all Dylan. Second bay from the end."
I walk down the row of hydraulic lifts and find a disarmingly smiley middle-aged man pouring fluid through a funnel. I introduce myself and explain that, since the Pride parade is this Sunday and the eagle seems to be missing a costume, I have taken the liberty of making one myself, and can I get his blessing to go put it on?
Dylan grins this absolutely giant grin and goes
"Oh hell yeah."
Tumblr media
So that's what's up now.
Happy Pride.
