Okay, so live action superhero movies haven't been my jam for a few years now. My dwindling embers were practically exinguished, One-For-All-style, with Infinity War and the DCEU has been basically a trash heap (Birds of Prey was pretty good, Suicide Squad was okay to put on while doing chores, but the mainstream stuff, ugh). But I have to say, with the Superman trailer that dropped today, there is hope. Obviously, this is early, we know nothing concrete, and trailers can lie. But this looks like the first great Superman movie in decades. There is a distinct patterning -- and yet modernizing -- of the immortal Superman from 1978, and I am here for it.

Superman 1978 font, John Williams' iconic musical theme: check. (Also, drops on my birthday, nice.)

"No fucks to give" reporter Lois Lane: check. I have no idea who Rachel Brosnahan is, but she absolutely appears to capture what I would expect Margot Kidder's Lois Lane to be in 2025.

"Slightly goofy, mild-mannered reporter" Clark Kent: check. The posture, the non-cool hair, the expression, the just-slightly-off suit. They actually manage to nail it in a way that even Henry Cavill (whom I greatly respect for being a fan and wanting an authentic Superman) couldn't. Look at this guy. There's no way he could be Superman. (Unlike many movies, his hair does seem to change when he becomes Superman.)

Close ties to the adoptive family that give him the humanity and ideals he strives for instead of the philosophy of Jor-El? Check. A 64-year-old Pruitt Taylor Vince is an interesting choice for Johnathan Kent. In the 1978 film, Glenn Ford was a strong, masculine figure (despite his age) who nevertheless raised Clark on the concepts of being helpful, gentle, not showing off his powers, not crushing everyone else. But here, Johnathan is visibly aged, overweight, balding, frail and all the more imperfect. He is weak and inferior to Clark in seemingly every way except presumably his humanity.

Okay, so their Lex Luthor is not going to be Gene Hackman. That's okay, Hackman was a great Luthor for the Superfriends era, but in today's age, hokey aloofness is not what we expect. Much like the Joker, Luthor also evolves with the times. This one is driven by wealth sure, but also he just hates Superman with a passion. Nicholas Hoult (Nux from Fury Road and Beast in the modern X-Men movies) might just be able to pull it off.

Note that while this Lex appears much more serious, according to Wikipedia they're bringing back Miss Tessmacher and Otis, two of Lex's associates from the 1978 and 1980 films.

I expect a significant story moment will be Luthor using his wealth and influence to turn the public against Superman, possibly through ploys like Lexor City where Superman was tricked into destroying an energy-producing device and damaging the city in the process.

Oh, and this Luthor-Superman rivalry? Ties into something else really exciting about this movie: All Star Superman, one of the all-time great Superman stories. There are clearly elements of that story contained within this, from what looks like the threat of a Sun-Eater to Superman's robots falling in battle. And while I'd rather they did a full-on All-Star story instead of just putting little bits and pieces in here, we should take what we can get.

All-in-all, this seems like a great modern retelling of a movie that I still enjoy to this day despite its obvious cheesiness and near-camp at times. I've actually a tiny bit excited.

BONUS POINTS: they're obviously willing to have fun with the franchise despite the obvious seriousness of a murderous Luthor and border conflicts in impoverished countries. Because they're including Kypyto the Superdog:

I'm using this as an opportunity to just talk about whatever comes to mind and the first thing I wanna start with are like some alternate ideas I had for Roach's family before I landed on the Sanderson dynamic that I have now:

Roach from a military family

Imagine how fun it would be if Roach was raised in a military family, especially if they still had that overprotective aspect to them. Like baby boy who was raised around the military so he's been intimately familiar with it

Maybe he had some different talent and his family wanted him to go down a different path and not go military like them

He says fuck that and joins the military and fucks around and ends up joining taskforce 141

Extra funny points if his family don't realize that he's on a specialized taskforce cause he was so nervous about telling them and they find out in dramatic fashion

Maybe he drops in to save them on a mission or something like 🤭 the drama of it all I love it

Also side note but I was thinking so hard about the Sanderson boys (Johnathan and Eddie) and I can't draw so I have to snatch some Face Claims for them so this is what I think Roach's older brothers look like:

Johnathan is played by Lee Pace don't test me this man is tall and probably acts as his own security at his bar and also is a goofball and idk Lee Pace is perfect (this should not detract from me also thinking that Lee Pace is a perfect fc for König)

Eddie to me has to look something like Luke Norris idk I feel like he needs a softer and more like nervous/panicky energy than Johnathan and this man fits don't test me don't test me

Also for anyone who is wondering: No, I still don't have a face claim for my Roach. In my mind he changes so much I see so many different artists versions of Roach in my brain at all times so choosing an actor for him is so hard. I have...thoughts, but idk that anyone would enjoy the thoughts that I have so we'll pretend I don't have them.

Listen y'all know Southern Roach is my bias but also also also have been falling in love more and more with the idea of Russian Roach. He would be so funnn like he works with Nik beforehand maybe he was undercover with the ultranationalists. I also enjoy the idea of him cursing Shepherd and/or Makarov out in Russian I think it would be fun.

However Southern Roach rains supreme I was thinking so hard about a ghostroachsoap au recently based loosely on the song "Farmer's Daughter" by Rodney Atkins. (Y'all let me know if you want the full au its really just farm au cuteness)

Thinking so hard of Roach just being beloved in his small town as this Golden Child precious little dude then he goes off to the military and finally let's that feral side come out a little. Imagine how funny it would be for Ghost and Soap to go home with Roach and see their boyfriend pu on this innocent act and listen to people describe him as this perfect little guy when they know for a fact that Roach is like borderline feral two steps away from being considered a wild animal.

Ghost and Soap who watched Roach tear a man's throat out with his teeth last week:

Also taking the opportunity to say that we as a community need to start acknowledging hoe canonically skilled Roach is with weapons! Like this is a boy who had both Price and Soap cursing because they couldn't get any kills because he was killing them to fast. This is a boy who beat Ghost (his luitenant) on a rifle test by a wide margin and on the test that ghost beat him he only fell behind four points.

Roach canonical has several extremely brutal takedown moves that he can do, including the pickaxes and the little fucking kick thing he does to the one guy before stabbing him. Also he's like straight up flipping his guns and doing tricks with them and shit in his weapons inspections, Soap talks about how good he is with C4 and shit.

Like I think people see the like spots where he got into trouble and nearly died in the campaign and take that to mean that he's like not as good as Ghost and Soap and needed their help a lot but like honest to God all of the trouble he gets in to is less because he fucked up and more because the world seems to have it out for him.

The roof breaking out from under him, the ice cracking on him, explosions happen to rock his ass just as soon as he hits an open field. Like someone was trying to kill this little fuck and two outta the three times they failed.

And like its not like Roach doesn't help himself during these situations. Like when he fell yeah he had Soap guiding him but he was the one having the run and slide and do all that shit like no amount of Soap's guiding could have made that easy for him.

Also this boy almost falls off a cliff but is able to get himself back on track enough that he not only finishes climbing the cliff but then does a whole ass stealth mission basically invading a Russian military base on his own???

Roach is a very talented and skilled bug and we should all be patting him on the head for how cool he is.

Also I think its absolutely funny cause In my mind he's smaller than Soap and Ghost both like height and build wise (not small, just smaller than those two behemoths) and so when the trio of them are together people like tend to underestimate him meanwhile Ghost and Soap are like "Uh, no, no you uh hey dude no" because they know that Roach will gladly fuck people up.

I also love the idea of Roach appearing out of nowhere like a fucking cryptid. There is no talking behind Roach's back or keeping secrets he is everywhere at once and will appear out of thin air. Ghost and Soap have to like fully leave base if they want to plan a surprise for him and even then both of them have no trust that Roach won't somehow pop into existence next to them waahahhahaha

hello m i hope you are well. i read chapter 7. nearly cried. tears of joy and also tears of being in the closet.

i'll say the lighthearted things first. high steve booping noses, asking for kisses, needing cold water. i want him, need him, and want to be him. as a certified public transportation girlie, the bus schedule concerns me greatly. wdym it comes every few hours?? fuck dude the mayor needs to stop taking bribes and start putting that money to city infrastructure cuz damn!!! bug squatting down at a movie theatre.......oooo you know people in that front row were mad as hell they weren't getting their premium ten cent experience.....

secondly, steve and bug.......coming off the high of the kiss omg.... the entire earnestness with which they feel for each other is so endearing. the part where steve tells her her beauty scares him and all she thinks i show much his beauty scared her......their twin flames for real....burning a candle together like no other...cut the cameras on me for real. genuinely taking a moment within all the chaos to appreciate how beautiful he is.....stuff of stars. also i loved when bug said this, "I think he’s as sweet as honey in July.” very southern mom thing to say and by southern mom i mean my dad. also these two lines: "To love someone is to know that they deserve your love." "Steve hadn’t known gentleness until he met you." Love working as a force that helps steve see his worth, help bug see her worth, and strive steve to be a better person is so much, so near and dear to me.....the solace they find in each other is amazing truly. also steve johnathan and nacy being so very uncomfortable at the news oooo your local core 4 group is undergoing a CRISIS BABE!

Okay now the big thing, which is the robin coming out scene..........omg. i liked how tender it felt how much it felt. robin picking at old wounds about bug and steve knowing it would hurt her.....terrible terrible time...... but seriously, and i am trying not to get too serious right now, as someone who is largely in the closet and will likely remain there for some time, this was really, really beautiful. robin coming out the moment she found people she was and comfortable enough to be vulnerable with was very veryyyy real, and the way that she felt she had to do it as soon as she was safe and that she wouldn't be punished for it </3. made me sob for her. bug holding her hand through it was very.....idk soft and tender, and i thought it was nice that bug got to share that part of herself too, liking nancy wheeler is very much an understandable activity, esp in s3 she looked so fucking good! just very sweet and nice for both of them, esp robin. she survived the having a crush on a girl with a bf canon event :D!! so proud of her!! picking at it like a wound was also delightful imagery, and it was such a good description of what it feels like sometimes, this thing you have to be investigating even when it feels like you shouldn't for various reasons but with you regardless.

im so incredibly happy the coming out scene was everything to you. as ive said in previous lil spiels about the chapter, i truly was nervous to write that scene with my inclusion of bug. ultimately the scene wasnt about her or steve, it was about robin and the pain of never being able to have what they do (she can. she will. we all will) but robin still finding the peace and strength within her friends to accept this. to still try :((( im deeply sorry that you feel as robin does right now. if you ever need anything, im always here my dear <3

-would love to read discussion re jojo and race. p2 opens with basically an neon blinking RACISM IS BAD sign, and yet....continues, like p1, to feature racial charicatures etc. as if the author understands racism is bad but has not yet realized drawing a mexican guy as a cartoonishly ugly dude in a big sombrero is racist? etc.

-relatedly to point 1, im very intruiged by the nazi plotline! Part 1 sets up very firmly that the world of jojo contains people who are simply Born Good (johnathan) or Born Evil (dio), intrinsically, so introducing the exaggerated endpoint of where the ideology of believing people can be born with innate morally good or bad qualitys can take you (nazis) caught my attention immediately.

The Lang Dynasty

Just wanna preface this by saying comic books are generally corny. Costumes, dialogue, premises, etc. There may be nostalgia here and there for some people; sometimes serious topics are addressed but overall, it's a carnival of corny and I would hope that people who review things keep that in mind when reviewing comic book movies.

Just did another watch of Quantumania and I felt it was serviceable.

I actually liked M.O.D.O.K., I am not intimately familiar with the character but it seems in line with what they were doing on Hulu.

Cassie wasn't out of place as a MCU character, a lot of which was pseudo and super science filled with tinkering geeks until Dr. Strange and WandaVision came about. At no point did I find myself hating the character or the portrayal, nor was I cheerleading her actions.

Scott came off as a caricature of what Captain America was played off as; kinda boy scouty and doofy. Not much depth to be found here.

The Pyms and Van Dynes gave off some dark vibes; Janet's secrets and Squirrel Girl Hank (if she wasn't so happy cheery). Hank could pull off being a super villain if he wanted to; Wasp seemed like filler.

Most of the VFX was nice (beautiful even) but you could see missteps in the motion of the micronized and in some of the fight choreography.

We saw improvements to a large swath of benchmarks with the querification of MonoItem collection (PR #132566). There were also some PRs where we are willing to pay a compile-time cost for expected runtime benefit (PR #132870, PR #120370), or pay a small cost in the single-threaded case in exchange for a big parallel compilation win (PR #124780).

Why We Miss The "Heavyweight" Podcast So Much?

The Heavyweight podcast ran for eight seasons, 58 episodes, from September 2016 until December 2023. Hosted by Jonathan Goldstein, the show was arguably one of the best in the podcasting world. In December 2023, Spotify canceled Heavyweight and Stolen and laid off 1,500 employees. The stock price of Spotify jumped up by six percent on those three news items.

Why was Heavyweight targeted for cancellation?

First, it is a resource-intensive show, with money spent on research and travel.

As one Reddit user commented: "Spotify dropped them, as others have mentioned. I know it’s an expensive show to make, but I have faith it’ll get picked up somewhere. If you listen to the latest episode, Johnathan makes it pretty clear they want to continue the show if at all possible."

Second, as others have noted, two dudes "shooting the shit" on a Spotify podcast costs considerably less than Heavyweight. There are no research expenses, and typically the "two dudes" just wing it on their podcast interviews with their guests.

Six months have gone by with no rumors about the resurrection of Heavyweight. Therefore, I'd like to familiarize those who have never listened to the show with its themes and episodes. Even if you have listened, this article can be a reminder to go back and listen to some of the show's episodes.

We all have emotional baggage from our past. It could be regrets for things not done or events handled poorly. Or a slip of the tongue or a traumatic episode that refuses to leave our consciousness.

As Heavyweight podcast host / creator and humorist Jonathan Goldstein notes, "Heavyweight" is meant to suggest the emotional burdens that we carry around, as well as "the connotation of the boxer juxtaposed with the connotation of me . . . the non-boxer."

For eight seasons, Jonathan Goldstein helped people like you and I try to resolve a moment from their past that they wish they could change.

In each episode, host Goldstein attempted to help a guest find closure for an unresolved question in their lives.

The Atlantic described the podcast by saying, "Each episode finds the host Jonathan Goldstein moderating a fraught moment intensified by years of distance: a time when someone broke a promise, or another person’s heart. The hurt is still there—sometimes for everyone, sometimes for just one person who can’t let something go. Goldstein leads special-ops soul-searching missions, seeking common ground between the aggrieved and the blissfully ignorant."

For example, in October 2021 (episode # 38) Goldstein talks with Justine. Growing up, Justine’s father always told her unbelievable stories about his life: that he was a big winner on Jeopardy; an outlaw who robbed banks armed only with flowers. Hauled In To Fandom Kicking and Screaming

Look. I usually dance along the periphery of fandoms, ones I have actually watched the shows of and ones I am literally just in it for one or two good fan fiction writers. It is VERY rare I see a character and it actually makes me want to get in to a fandom. My ADHD/Autism combo makes it hard for me to get in to the mood to watch shows okay? Movies maybe. but series? oh lordy I have been bitten and burned so many times I am gun shy as heck with getting in to watching a show. I have gotten involved with to many shows for them to get axed for attracting the 'wrong' fans (Teen Titans, Motor City), or bizarre choices to take everything that attracted people to the first seasons and toss them in the trash and stick a sexy white woman in peril as the main into it's place. Weirdly specific but the fact it has happened several times is... something (Grimm, Sleepy Hollow). Or later episodes fall down the Stairs of Stupid Out of Character Decisions and Mistakes An Idiot Plot for a Plot Twist. I'm sure at least a few shows popped in your head at that one!

So I am .... reticent.... to get in to anything these days. Enter Eddie Munson.

Look. Stranger Things is in the background of the internet fandom zeitgeist. Okay creepy monsters, 80's, people actually LOOK like they are from the 80's and aren't airbrushed into an inch of their lives. Made a huge splash in its first season then kinda... floated in the background for the next few seasons.

Nothing about it really grabbed me. Looked fun. Not enough to attract my scraggly feral arse.

See. I KNOW this fucker. See I was a wee barely existing bean in the mid 80's. I have a brother who is over a decade older then me who thankfully I grew up having a great relationship with. So he was a TEENAGER during the 80's. Closer to Henderson's age then Munson's during 86. But I look at this fucker, and I KNOW him. Eddie Munson is the cobbled together pieces of my older brothers friend circle. The hair from one. The weed from another. The fashion from a few of them. My brother was more of a Johnathan type fashion and music wise (not personality), but a lot of his buddies were heavy metal or grunge. And more then half of them were in to DnD and comic books. Two of them were always writing or playing an instrument while hanging out at our house or back yard. They gamed at our house or at the drug dealer guys house (I didn't know he was back then cause again, baby wee me, but I remember he did cool smoke ring tricks and got my younger brother and I a huge pile of dinkies, so A+ dude to me) because hey, GUESS WHAT, the Satanic Panic was even a thing in but fuck nowhere Eastern Canada. My dad was Atheist (GASP) and my mom was vaguely Anglican (Sunday every week for socializing) but had logical heads. Mom was scared at first when my older brother got in to DnD, but despite being a early 20's young mother to two toddlers and a teenage step son with the whisper of church ladies in her ears... she sat down and learned about it. Found out it's just creative writing within a group with math. So we were the one place other than the drug dealers house they could have their games without judgement. Obviously our house was nicer so they were over a LOT. Which with it being the 80's, and both our parents busy nurses overworked and always on call, that resulted in a bunch of teenage scrungey boys babysitting tiny me and baby brother while playing DnD, practicing, hanging out, or whatever. I KNOW this fucker. I know Eddie Munson. All the pieces that make him I know them because I grew up with them. I have NEVER had a character give me a whiplash feeling of nostalgia for the past like THIS MOTHERFUCKER. Yes. I got bitch slapped by a blorbo in to watching a show so I can actually tell if the character is written believably (much more elastic then you think) or if the fandom is full of poop.

So I watched short snaps of just his scenes. God dammit he is Like That. Well NOW I have to go back to the beginning of the show because guess fucking what you shit heads. I want to actually try writing fanfiction. I want to making Eddie Munson SUFFER my twisted form of love.

I haven't done that in over 10 years. I've kept up with character writing, but nothing beyond role play games. This FRIGGER is making me dig up so many things from the graveyard of my fandom enjoyment past I may as well accept my new life as a Necromancer.

The show is meh, I know this, but the world has so many options of PROMISE. MUSIC THEMES. the fucking 80's! The characters, once again, do NOT look like airbrushed, they actually look like 80's awkward kids and adults and people. There's mullet's and mens crop tops and short shorts. All on the background of Modern (ish) Suburban Hidden World Fantasy with a good and proper horror twist. Shitty government fuckery. Monsters. Weird powers with no real explanation as to WHY. POTENTIAL!!!! SO yeah. There was a shiny toy in the sandbox (Eddie Munson) and I'm joining in, cat turds and cigarette butts be damned. I am going to try and slap in my observations of each episode as I go. Have fun watching me hate but love it all.

JONATHAN SIM’S VOICE DURING STATEMENTS IS SO FUCKING COOL.

Allow me to explain

In the early episodes when John is speaking as John and only John he has a slightly cold, low and exasperated voice. However when he is reading a statement he doesn't at all sound like himself. This is very clear in MAG 14. Here his voice is even colder than usual and he speaks with an extreme animosity towards people he neither knows nor gives a shit about. And yet while reading the statement he is very clearly angry, resentful, disgusted and such, only from someone else's point of view.

When first listening to these statements his voice changing might seem like a bad choice. He has a very distinct voice already and is in no way he’s “getting into” the statements enough to assume that this is his was of having fun with them. So when they throw away everything we can gather about his character for the sake of having a gripping enough story for the body of the episode it seems... cheap?

But when listening to the statements after, understanding Johns connection to them, its just fuckin awesome. He really ISNT John anymore. He's the statement giver. This isn't a wobbly character this is an avatar of the eye being an avatar of the fuckin eye

He picked the key from the ground, unlocking the door. He set the key back in its original spot before heading in. Johnathan looked around to not see his friends waiting on the couch. He saw the snacks for the night and movies laid out on the coffee table for the night. Johnathan walked around his friend’s home, walking up the stairs to continue to search for his friends.

Johnathan continued to look around, seeing Argyle room door opened slightly. He snuck up to the door, hearing movements and heavy breathing. He peaked around the cracked open door, and he felt his face heat up.
