but now, you kind of wished you did. soobin wasn't anything like you imagined. you probably pictured an average looking guy with a personality that reached depths, maybe wore a few fashionable pieces here and there. but you didn't expect him to have wear the simplest outfits, and yet look like— well, the way he did.

you eyed him in a white t shirt covering all of his arms, the thin material subtilty revealing dark outlines on his skin, a delicate pendant around his neck and fluffy hair brushed aside to make room for his glasses. and when he smiled at a joke your friend made...shit. he was kind of cute.

how long did ratc take you to plan & write? i see you published it over a year or so on ao3 but i’m curious about the planning & drafts too. ratc reignited my love for fics & inspired me to write as well but i’m spending foreevverrr in the planning stage and actually writing is so tedious (perfectionist) & i wonder if i’ll ever get to the point of writing something as detailed and fleshed out as ratc especially w other commitments like uni

follow up question, is there a particular book, series or piece of media that majorly inspires your writing?

fantastic question.

one of the big things folks ask me when they approach me about RATC is how i kept track of it and how long it took to plan. The answer to both is basically a month or so - from posting chapter 1 to chapter 33 took exactly a year (I planned it that way!) with a few months off when a relationship ended and I lost my job (that was UNPLANNED).

RATC became the beast that it is by answering questions I kept asking myself. I didn't set out with the answers already in hand - I kind of discovered them along the way. I'd ask things like 'what do I want to express with claggor?' and i'd answer 'well, a dude with depression who everyone thinks is dumb but is incredibly emotionally intelligent'. that leads to the question 'ok, what does that look like on the sumprats?' and the answer was as an assistant captain, and showing all the things that displayed how an emotionally intelligent guy would be really valuable to a team situation.

it's a trick i learned from professional tabletop DMs - worldbuilding is essentially asking yourself questions and being honest with the answers. that coupled with the fact that I knew the ending sequence - I wanted the Sumprats to come back from down five goals in the final game, the 'won't back down' crowd singing sequence, and Cait wearing Vi's journey - meant that I could basically lay out breadcrumbs that would pay off down the line. when the fic began to expand past my initial 9 chapter expectation (queue mocking laughter) I kept myself focused by completing what i called mini arcs - Caitlyn finding herself in the team and Vi protecting her with Claggor is act 1, Ahri coming back and them starting a romantic relationship is act 2, etc. etc. etc.

so, to say that I started off planning it isn't accurate. what's more accurate is that I decided on my endpoint and discovered all the little places the story could go along the way. it worked for me, and my adhd, and it worked for me because i loved writing it and wanted to keep revisiting the world.

as for the tedium of writing - one of the keys for me is that i really wanted it done, and had fun doing it. if it had ever been tedious for me i don't think i would've been able to power through, so it kept being fun for me.

regarding the series/books I read: I read a ton of romance novels because life is hard and i want to read warmth, but stephen king, dennis lehanne, and nora roberts (lol what a trio) have all been big influences on the way i characterize folks. my favourite TV show of all time is The Wire, but I love Chernobyl and the first season of True Detective and the Godfather trilogy - the media i tend to really cherish is media that makes me think, or makes me shut my brain off. it's weird that way.

loosely inspired by seeing one of my friends i haven't seen in a while and deciding to get fast food at eleven p.m

“Dude you’re literally so bad at this,” you say as Mark’s character in Valorant lies defeated on the screen. 

“Do you wanna play?” he asks (threatens more like). You only laugh. 

“Nah, it’s more fun watching you lose.”

Your head is lying in Jeno’s lap as you watch Mark play. Jaemin, Chenle, and Haechan are sitting on the floor and Renjun is on the other end of the couch along with Jisung. 

“Blazin" by Koffee is playing from Mark’s speakers and his lights are turned to a soft purple. Everything about the atmosphere in the room brings you a sense of calm filled with contentment. There’s nothing better than this—time with the people you love most. 

Mark finishes the match (his team loses, to no one’s surprise) and pushes himself away from the desk, stretching out in the chair. 

“Is anyone else hungry?” he asks. 

Words of agreement are murmured throughout the room. You sit up, much to Jeno’s disappointment. 

“It’s 11:30, what’s even open right now?” Jaemin asks. 

“We could go to Swenson’s,” you suggest. “They’re open until 1 I think.”

“Swenson’s?” Renjun raises an eyebrow. 

“The true American experience,” you say with a sigh. “It’s just fast food but at least it isn’t McDonalds. Plus, they bring your food out to the car so I don’t have to put on shoes.” You smile down at the socks you’re wearing, dark green with little alligators on them. 

“I’m down,” Mark says. 

“Me too,” Jeno agrees. 

You grin. “Swenson’s it is.”

“I’m not gonna lie,” you say as you all walk out to Mark’s car. “When I got home from work I went, whose piece of shit car is parked in front of my house?”

Mark laughs, as he looks at the car. 

He was borrowing it, and it was old and beat up and generally just, well, shitty. 

You knew Jeno was coming over, but the rest of the guys decided to surprise you, which was wonderful. Everyone was busy nowadays and it had been months since you were all together. 

You were grateful the car had two rows of backseats so you all didn’t have to squeeze in. You take the middle seat behind Mark, with Jeno on one side and Haechan on the other. Jaemin sits shotgun and attempts to commandeer the radio but ultimately fails. 

The drive to Swenson’s is a short one, but Mark rolls the windows down and turns the music up anyway. Moments like these carry a certain kind of magic that you haven’t found anywhere else. Something about the rareness of them makes them feel more special. You close your eyes and commit the feeling to memory so you can look back on this moment when the boys aren’t around. 

You open your eyes and look around at them. Mark and Jaemin are bickering over the song playing and behind you, Renjun, Chenle, and Jisung are talking about going to the beach soon. Haechan is quietly singing next to you and Jeno… Jeno is looking at you with such fondness it makes your heart race. 

Suddenly you feel overwhelmed with love for all of them. They all treated you like a best friend, like you’d been with them from the beginning. At first you’d been scared they’d only ever see you as Jeno’s girlfriend, but they never made you feel that way. When you were with them you belonged. 

You lean your head to rest on Jeno’s shoulder and he slips his arm around your shoulders. “I love you guys,” you say. 

“What?” Mark asks and you laugh. Between the wind and the music you doubt any of them heard you. 

“I love you guys!” you shout. Next to you, Haechan smiles. 

“We love you too!”

At Swenson’s, Mark offers to pay (which is a decision he’ll definitely regret later) so the boys all order as much food as they want. It takes the poor employee two trips to get everything out to the car and Mark leaves a hefty tip for making them deliver such a large order late at night. 

“We should go to the beach to eat,” Renjun suggests, so Mark pulls out of the parking lot and gets on the highway. 

The drive to the beach is not as quick and they close the windows this time, but it allows the group of you to talk. 

The conversation is comfortable and full of laughter. Jeno holds you close to him the whole time and when he laughs you can feel the vibrations. 

When you finally make it to the beach, Mark chooses a parking spot down by the shore, turning off the car. The guys split the bags of food among them so that no one is carrying too much. You grab a large picnic blanket from the trunk and Jeno insists on carrying you because you’re still not wearing shoes. 

Once the blanket is spread across the sand, you all settle down and hand out the food that’s thankfully still warm. 

The milkshake you ordered is sweet and cold, perfect for a summer night. As it gets later, the conversations get deeper and you reminisce on when you all met for the first time. 

You lie back down in Jeno’s lap and look up at the stars, trying to name the constellations that you remember from the astronomy course you took back in high school as an elective. 

“You know, I never really thanked you guys for being so welcoming to me,” you say. 

“You don’t have to thank us,” Jaemin says with a smile. 

“Yeah,” Renjun adds. “You’re our friend.”

“You’re stuck with us I’m afraid,” Mark jokes and you smile. 

“How terrible.”

After an hour, it gets chilly, so you fold up the blanket and all pile back into the car. The drive back to your place is quieter than the others, but you don’t mind the calm atmosphere. 

Everyone enchanges goodbyes with you and Jeno outside, promising to see you again in the coming days. You wave at the car as they drive away before taking Jeno’s hand and following him inside. 

After getting ready for bed (though it’s well past 4 a.m at this point and closer to morning than night) you both cuddle up under the covers on your bed, your bodies pressed together. 

“Did you like the surprise?” he asks and you smile. 

“I loved it. I love you.”

He kisses the top of your head. “I love you too.”

HALLOW-LEE-N movie Oct. 5th : The Creeping Flesh (1973)

This movie is strange. Definitely not a masterpiece but quite fun in its campy, Hammer way. I had a fun time but I was also laughing at many points that were probably not intended to be funny.

This movie is the story of a mad scientist ("I'm not mad!"), Pr. Emmanuel Hildern (Peter Cushing). He returns from New Guinea, where he has made a great discovery, to his house, occupied by his lab assistant and his adult daughter Penelope. We learn a few things with some clunky exposition : Penelope's mother has passed, and Penelope is strictly forbidden from discussing her or going into her room, because Daddy Knows Best. That seems to be a theme in horror.

Pr. Hildern shows his magnificent discovery : a skeleton older than Neanderthals and yet much more advanced! The proof of that advanced, hyper-intelligent mind is that the skeleton's head is huge. My dude, so is an elephant's. Also, the prop skeleton holds together, every bone attached, while all the flesh is gone. This vexes me greatly and this crappy prop caused most of my laughter during watching.

He also mentions finding Neanderthals in Australia. Which is not remotely possible.

Anyway, while washing the skeleton, Pr. Hildern noticed that the contact of water on the bones of a finger causes the flesh and skin to grow back around the bone. He quickly chops the resurrected finger off and... Goes to bed.

The next day, analyzing blood samples from the finger and cross-referencing "ancient new Guinean legends" that sound totally made up reveals that the skeleton is a great evil. And lo, his blood cells are literally Pure Evil™, they look like fucked up spiders. Hildern immediately makes a vaccine against Pure Evil™, which takes him about 5 minutes, and injects a monkey with it. When the monkey seems fine after 20 seconds at most, he jumps to vaccinating his daughter Penelope as well.

We learn another thing : Penelope's mother, an ex Parisian show girl, was not dead for many years as we thought but only recently deceased. She spent all those years locked up in an asylum run by Hildern's half brother James (Christopher Lee).

James and the Pr. seem to be sort of academic rivals. The Pr. of course knew about his wife, he's just lying to Penelope ✨for her own good✨.

Of course, by the next morning the monkey is dead after destroying his cage and Penelope has vanished from home. Who could've seen this coming?

Penelope has taken one of her late mother's dresses and gone to mingle with the sailors and prostitutes in a seedy inn. After an uncomfortable attempted assault scene, Penelope kills a man who was groping her and escapes, pursued by a mob. She finds refuge in a barn, and then kills another guy in full view of everybody. The scene of Penelope in her red dress running down the dark city streets is actually a cool shot.

Penelope is brought to her uncle's asylum, where he jumps to the frankly reasonable conclusion that her father has been experimenting on her. He brings her home and investigates the lab, where he pieces most of what's going on together. He immediately decides he needs this skeleton, but he shows a bit more restraint than his half-brother and at least waits until night to come back, break in and haul the entire skeleton - remember, it all magically holds together - into his carriage.

The carriage overturns, in the rain, and while James goes to get help, the skeleton gets proper drenched. The newly resurrected Pure Evil™ dude rises, clad in a cloak, kills the carriage driver and walks back to Pr. Hildern's house. Despite living before the invention of agriculture, and indeed houses, the Pure Evil™ dude knows to knock on the door and wait for Penelope to open the door to him.

He then kills the lab assistant and ransacks the lab, before going up to the Pr. Fade to black, and the final scene introduces a twist that casts a different light on the entire movie. The crux is this : do you believe what Pr. Hildern says, or what James says?

The end.

Now, while this movie was kind of ridiculous, it was great fun. I liked Lee's character, the smarmy, jealous brother, who clearly regards his "patients" as less than human and wishes he could experiment on any other human being. He's a jerk to the bone, and yet manages to come off looking better than his half-brother, who is a true monument to idiocy.

Lorna Heilbron's performance as Penelope was the best part for me, she really sells the demure but determined young lady in the first act, the righteous anger at being lied to about her mother, and the demented and dangerous woman in the second act.

Overall, I'd say a 6/10.

so see the whole motivation behind shipping them is that rei is the only other voicebank to have no actual voice provider besides defoko. they're both completely machine synthesized w/o human samples, and defoko's flavor text also says she's a bot so there's so much fuel arnd it lol (esp. in regards to them being robots). personally for me too the idea that it took the only other provider-less vsynth 11 years to come out after u is so. rei having come out in 2019 and utau itself being out since 2008. they've got a jaded senpai-rabid kouhai thing going for me as a result, amongst other things. u can extrapolate a lot of fun details from actual community meta like this

other than that your best friend is fanwork and songs! i'm a huge fan of sho (FRAYLOVEBOT)'s few pieces of work for them and it rlly informed my view. quick search of レイウタ on twt will also net some interesting stuff. there's also the songs kikaijima and satsurikukyo that got mildly popular (there's a translation for the first song). theyre the basis for a lot of reidefo work... but ur imagination is ur limit really. most of the meat is on twitter unfortunately but i'll try my damnednest to reblog some stuff here too
