This large 1900 home in Dubuque, Iowa is actually a bargain at $430K. It has 10bd. & 9ba. Basically, the house needs cosmetic work, including some bright fresh decor.
Isn’t this an amazing entrance?
Very cozy sitting room.
Look at the incredible original fireplace.
The dining room is amazing. Love the wallpaper and built-in. Love this room.
The kitchen is nice. The current owner has an old filing cabinet in here.
This bd. has a very interesting fireplace. It got some new, pretty tile.
This bd. appears to be a little larger and can fit a desk.
Beautiful stained glass.
Could be the main bd. The carpeting in the upstairs bds. need replacing and of course all the rooms could use some new decor. They’re slightly worn.
The bds. are in need of freshening.
This one has a lovely fireplace and they all have beautiful original oak wood.
The baths need some sprucing, too, but there’s a lovely vintage tub.
The baths are definitely vintage. The tile in this one is original and it also has a great stained glass window.
It looks as if the garage was turned into a residence, by the looks of the entrance.

Statement on Woman's Rights from an Iowa Woman
Record Group 46: Records of the U.S. Senate Series: Petitions and Related Documents That Were Presented, Read, or Tabled File Unit: Petitions and Memorials, Resolutions of State Legislatures, and Related Documents which were Presented, Read, or Tabled during the 65th Congress
This statement, printed by the Iowa Association Opposed to Woman Suffrage and signed by a woman from Dubuque, Iowa, asks Congress to oppose the Susan B. Anthony Amendment. It lists the rights that women have and why they do not need the vote, including that it would be a burden and would be "demoralizing to our government and our womanhood."
[handwritten] We Women Opposed to Woman Suffrage would appreciate your standing by us and opposing the Anthony Amendment. [/handwritten] Woman's Rights THERE is one point on which the suffragists and anti-suffragists can agree,--that is, being free American citizens and intelligent human beings, we are entitled to equal [italics] rights [/italics] with men. We have a [italics] right [/italics] to put on men's clothing; we have a [italics] right [/italics] to ask men in marriage; we have a [italics] right to become soldiers and fight on the field for our country; we have a [italics] right [/italics] to work in coal mines, or in constructive building. We have a [italics] right [/italics] to enter the political field and demand a place in our congressional halls. We have a [italics] right [/italics] to aspire even to be elected President of the United States. For are we not as intelligent as men, and entitled to [italics] equal rights [/italics] with them? But being [italics] women [/italics] and not men, we, the large majority of the women of our country, claim the [italics] right [/italics] to keep our own identity and the [italics] right [/italics] not to have a political life thrust upon us. This is so much vital work for women to do in this world of ours, that no [italics] man [/italics] can do, that we have the [italics] right [/italics] to call for a division of labor. We are the Mothers of all the men, and to a large extent have the making and molding of their characters, physically, mentally, morally and religiously; that duty is demanded of us [italics] now [/italics] as in all times past, and will devolve upon us as long as mankind exists. Have we not the [italics] right [/italics] to call upon men to take the burden of government and politics into their hands and make our laws and enforce them? Can we not trust them? The "Majority Rules", and it would be a crime to force the ballot upon the large majority of the women of our country who do not want it. We have a [italics] right [/italics] to call upon the Representatives and Senators of our country to do all in their power by voice and vote to protect us from the burden of the ballot. We do not ask these [italics] rights [/italics] from any spirit of opposition or malice, but from a deep religious and moral conviction that vote by women (with the politics entailed) will be harmful and demoralizing to our government and our womanhood. AN IOWA WOMAN [handwritten] Miss A. J. [illegible] [/handwritten] Iowa Association Opposed to Woman Suffrage. [illegible logo] [handwritten] Yours cordially (Miss) Kate Keith [illegible} 1471 Main St Sept 21 1918 DuBuque Ia [/handwritten]

Postcards from Snagglepuss
Just getting stocked up for some houseboating isn't quite a picnic--or can it be?
DUBUQUE, IA: It certainly took a couple days to reach the Mississippi River from Breezewood, Pennsylvania via US 20 for the most part ... and to cross the Mississippi via the Julien Dubuque Bridge was something of a sign of anticipation for some interesting little escapades ahead.
Via houseboat, even.
And with such interesting company of Your Correspondent as Huckleberry Hound and Touché Turtle, Bristlehound and Dum-Dum were bound, in their role as guides, to make sure things were running smoothly. Hence, their directing us via text message to meet them at the Hy-Vee supermarket coming off the bridge into Dubuque. Yes, as in a certain "little old lady from" made infamous, in a way, by Harold Ross in launching that somewhat sophisto and urbane journal known as The New Yorker back in 1925. Insisting that he was not intending The New Yorker to be for the Little Old Lady from Dubuque, implying that she would likely be satisfied with The Saturday Evening Post, Collier's, Grit and Comfort rather than a high-class literary-leaning review.
But back to the Hy-Vee: Both Dum-Dum and Bristlehound would meet us at the entrance for the preparatory shopping trip for supplies heading into the little houseboat excursion. More than likely a "mystery trip," by all assumptions, yet mind you, leave any pretension of emulating Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn at the dock.
Following a modest little cafeteria-manner lunch in Hy-Vee's dining area, something of a staple in their larger locations across eight Midwestern states, Bristlehound and Dum-Dum led the way into getting the necessary supplies: Meal-replacement drinks (mainly for breakfast) ... wholemeal crackers ... cheese spread ... summer sausage ... smoked sausage ... buns ... charcoal ... bottled water, spring and seltzer ... flavouring concentrate ... batteries for the transistor radio ... all in all, just trying to be low-impact more than anything.
As Dum-Dum admitted, "it's more than likely we'll want to spend our nights sleeping on the roof of our houseboat just for the experience."
Bristlehound added, "Especially when passing barge tows in the night leave such wake as can make things interesting in the sleep department." Thankfully, CPAP was not the sort of thing we were on, nor even think about being on.
Once out of the way, a drive to the docks where Bristlehound and Dum-Dum tied up their modest little houseboat--hardly a fancy sort, yet stylishly simplistic for the purpose. Even if it took a few minutes for a freight train to clear the tracks so we could get to the boat, by which time early evening's effects were starting to be obvious. And once loaded, reviewing the inevitable safety procedures for boating in the Mississippi's waters, the call of "Touché awayyyy!" by none other than was the call to cast off and get underway.
Huckleberry Hound couldn't have said it better in observing that "what could feel more interesting than to just spend a couple days on the river living the houseboat life ... even if it means the likes of Boost for breakfast?"
"At any rate, folks," Dum-Dum was quick to note, "Bristlehound and I decided on meal-replacement shakes for breakfast more than anything. Especially when the desire is to get out on the river with as little mess as possible after breakfast."
"Even allowing for recycling," Bristlehound added.
Still, even if the supper was mainly a bag of wholemeal tortilla chips with some salsa in the bargain as we made bivouac for the night on some sandbar on the Wisconsin side of the river. Just be thankful for the deck chairs to provide some sleep, and just hope the trains don't keep you all too awake.

Friday, October 11, 2024 - Tim Walz
The Governor hit the campaign trail today in Iowa with Liz Cheney and Chasten Buttigieg. Liz Cheney didn't join the canvasing in Sioux City, as the campaign was stumping for down ballot democrats, something Cheney doesn't do for our campaign. However, she joined us for the bus ride to Dubuque for the second event. The 'official' schedule is below.
Sioux City, IA Event Location: Chris Larsen City Park Event Type: Canvasing Event Time: 8:00 - 11:00 CT *Chasten and the Governor hit the ground in Sioux City, canvassing in the park with some volunteers and then door knocking throughout town. They were encouraging voters to turn out and vote for the Harris Walz ticket, congressional candidate for Iowa's 4th district Ryan Melton. Lastly, they did some explaining about Iowa's ballot initiative with Amendment 1, this is a complicated amendment that could expand voting rights for those turning 18 during election seasons, but could also explicitly make it impossible for non-citizen permanent residents (ex. green card holders). The Harris Walz administration believes that voting 'yes' suits the people of Iowa the best.
Dubuque, IA Event Location: Dalzell Field Event Type: High School Football Game Event Time: 18:00 - 22:00 CT *Kick-off was at 20:30, but the Governor, Liz Cheney, and Chasten Buttigieg met with teachers, coaches, and the principals of the schools before the game to have dinner and chat. A friendly wager that has been made at many Friday night games was once again made. Liz Cheney and Chasten Buttigieg sided with the away team (Cedar Rapid's Kennedy High School) and Tim Walz sided with the home team (Dubuque's Hempstead High School). Whoever's team loses will spend the following day campaigning wearing the winning school's gear. During halftime, the governor gave a speech to the underdog team about perseverance, while after the game he gave a speech to the winners about winning and leading by example in the community as sportsman.
