I'm not an artist, but I decided to combine the existing illustrations for the fic and a bit of fiddling around to make a mock book cover for my favorite RadioApple fic, Ruination of Lucifer by @syaunei (with absolutely epic illustrations by @betti2024).

Art by Betti2024, the top bit of the back cover text was pulled from the fic's description on Ao3, and then I added a bit more back cover text and fiddled around with some clip art and formatting in PowerPoint to make a romance novel-style front and back cover ^_^

Seriously y'all go read this fic, I am positively FERAL over it. I've been a fan of Syaunei for ages, Timeo Trilles Et Dona Ferentes is one of my fav DS9 fics ever, and so I was DELIGHTED to see she'd started writing Hazbin fic. All her writing is epic, five stars, flawless, greater than great. So go and read Ruination of Lucifer and join me in the Kermit flailing with delight, and then go read her DS9 fic and flail with delight even more.

Buffy and Faith are living it up in Cleveland, over thirty and regularly trying to convince their neighbors they're really just roommates, not "roommates", no matter what Faith wants. Of course, then things get all fucked up, complete with an apocalypse.

Buffy/Faith, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. There's a ton of great femslash fics in the buffy fandom, I still need to finish reading this fic, and it's far from the only awesome btvs fic I still have to finish reading.

One of the conditions in the Cloud Recesses was that when Lan Sect disciples turned eighteen, they had to attend a mandatory lecture to educate them about physical intimacy with the opposite sex. Lan Sizhui and Lan Jingyi, who had both just turned eighteen that year, were required to attend such a lecture, given by none other than the strict and proper Lan Qiren himself.

ACD Sherlock Holmes, Holmes/Watson. Almost 400k words, breathtakingly lovely and with a lot of historical pieces, it's a lovely companion to the original stories. I'm still working my way through this one, savoring it.

As a friendship begins to form between them, a murder investigation pulls Watson into Holmes' world. Between crime scenes, a killer with an eye on revenge, and frustrating police officers, their friendship grows into something neither of them had expected.

ACD Sherlock Holmes, Holmes/Watson. Modern AU. I haven't finished this one yet, I find the idea of a modern take appealing because well, it's always different. There's a million modern-set things inspired by Sherlock Holmes stories, and so in a way this is yet another, with this author's take.

Merlin/Arthur, BBC Merlin. A very long fic, part of a long series, and I am still working through it. I am delighted it exists. A fic for when you miss the show, and want more, a lot more.

Errance by Melicerte (part of a larger series, language: French)

Eventual Root/Shaw, Person of Interest. A side note: there are a BUNCH of amazing root/shaw fics on ao3 in French.

Bonus recommendation: The Manipulation of Julian Bashir by The Tystie

When you have lived a lie for over half your life, how do you cope when the truth comes out? A story about Julian Bashir, set in season 5.

Julian Bashir focused, DS9, canon divergent. If you, like me, were interested in the episode Doctor Bashir I Presume, and it's implications, then this is a fic for you. It delves so much deeper into the issues raised from that episode, and like many a good science fiction it explores them. I saw this fic recommended on reddit for people who were looking for more fics about Julian, and I see why they mentioned the story. This story made me actually go back on ffnet for the first time in years to see it and leave comments.

If you're looking for me on ao3, I'm softcorevulcan there (you need to log into ao3 to view my fics). I wrote some fics for Person of Interest, Angel, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Star Trek, The Untamed, Guardian, DMBJ, Justice in the Dark (that are MoDu canon compliant), and Men with Sword. I tend to write canon compliant or canon divergent stuff, but hey there's always wild cards. I write sporadically so who knows when the ideas will strike again, and I have a few perpetual Star Trek wips I debate if I'll ever post. I need to eventually make some of my bookmarks on ao3 into a public rec list on there so it's easier to share my recs. So that'll be something to do. Eventually ToT)/

So, after my post about finding old fic, I decided to make a post, of fanfics I’ve loved over the years. I thought maybe other people might enjoy them too.

It’s not a complete list, there are a lot of other fics that aren’t in the list, mainly because I have and have had favourites saved all over the place, and I’ve got still more that I probably haven’t remembered. I’ll add more later.

All of these are complete, I haven’t included WIPS as much as I have some I loved, I doubt they will ever be finished now. Maybe I’ll add them later too, with warnings of course.

Most of these are pretty long. They are all ones I’ve gone back and read over and over, some though, I haven’t read in years, so maybe they’re not as good as I remember. Hopefully they are though.

This list is mainly for my own benefit, but I hope someone else gets some enjoyment out of these too, and please feel free to reblog and add your own faves.

So, in no particular order:

Cruel Necessity by Epona Harper - Real Ghostbusters fanfic. 79k words.

Summary: An attack on Peter has far-reaching repercussions.

No Little Charity by Perspi - House MD fanfic. 37351 words.

Summary: It was an old ritual, old magic from before the world had rational explanations and cold science. Cold science had failed House; Wilson had nothing left to try but this. (You need to be logged in to view this one)

Tarred and Feathered by Crydamoure - Good Omens fanfic. 75735 words.

Summary: It was the most obvious punishment. The Archangel created to carry Her voice suddenly rendered mute.

One Night In Bangor (And the World's Your Oyster) by Atalan - Good Omens fanfic. 10452 words.

Summary: "All right, I know I'm going to regret asking this," Aziraphale says. "What exactly does this wager entail?"

Crowley grins like the cat that not only got the cream but has absconded with the entire cow. He grabs the bottle and swigs straight from it despite Aziraphale's tut of disapproval.

 "The pot goes to whichever demon can get an angel into bed by the end of the evening."

 AKA The Fic That Tumblr Made Me Write. Heaven and Hell share a corporate party once per millennium. This time someone's had the bright idea of issuing a challenge to the demons of Hell. Crowley has no intention of missing the opportunity; Aziraphale's just enough of a bastard to make him work for it

Eclipse by AconitumNapellus - Star Trek TOS fanfic. 82773 words.

Summary: Spock is blinded in an explosion on the Enterprise and relocates to Earth for his rehabilitation. While he grows used to his new world and finally returns to the Enterprise, he and the crew must find out if the explosion was an accident, or terrorism.

Demonology and the Tri-Phasic Model of Trauma: An Integrative Approach by Nnm. Good Omens fanfic. 99423 words.

Summary: As soon as Aubrey Thyme, psychotherapist, had opened her office door and seen her new client, Anthony J. Crowley, sitting in her waiting area, she was observing and assessing him. At first glance, she paid attention to the following:

--His clothing was expensive and stylish;
--He wore very strange but noticeable cologne;
--His relationship to the seat he occupied could only, very loosely, be described as “sitting;”
--He looked angry;
--He was wearing sunglasses.

What Aubrey Thyme, a professional, thought, upon first seeing her new client was: you’re going to be a fun one, aren’t you?

I just read a story I really liked! It's gen, novel-length AND all about Julian. It's called The Darkness Within by Mijra on ff.net and the focus is on Julian's (toxic) childhood with a lot of angst and a plot twist I really hadn't seen coming! I've been reading a lot of Garashir stories recently but it was nice to have a non-slash story about Julian once in a while. So much trauma the poor boy is going through. Goes straight to my h/c folder! There seem's to be more from the author. Can't wait to go through her (?) other stories.

(Or: Julian has always thought Garak just had a weird little habit. Until another Cardassian does the same thing to him, and seems to imbue the gesture with a meaning Julian really had not anticipated.)

@kaelio's fic Restore, Remake, Rebuild (aka RRR) is a classic of the Garak/Bashir ship and it hits like a fucking brick to the feels and so much about the worldbuilding is stuck permanently in my head. I first encountered it years ago but it still hits hard (not just the Garak/Bashir aspects but also the Quark/Natima bits too, I love that ship)

Most recently, Ruination of Lucifer by @syaunei - my favorite Hazbin fic, hands down. The writing style and vividness and artistry is absolutely glorious, and Syaunei has a knack for hitting me in the feels with words like a perfectly aimed fish hook to the heartstrings. I feel positively feral about it sometimes, it's just SO GOOD. I look forward to the weekly updates and around ~8pm Sunday night Aussie time I keep hitting refresh waiting for the next chapter so I can devour it and then ping @coppercrow to flail about it like it's our own little online book club XD It is SO. SO. GOOD.

And finally He Says He Is an Experimental Theologian by @erinptah - I wasn't even a HDM fan when I encountered this, just very into WTNV but I have reread the series so many times, it is such rich worldbuilding

For the Fic Rec Ask Game. I couldn't narrow any of these down to just one fic per question because I have 467 AO3 bookmarks and can't make decisions to save my life, so consider the rest a bonus.

3. 😂 A fic that made you laugh out loud

The Subtle Arrangement of Stones (Babylon 5, ensemble). It's a season one "missing episode" told via security interviews. I don't even know how many times I laughed at this. Everyone is ridiculous and also somehow perfectly in character.

Reasons to Celebrate (SW:TCW, Waxer/Boil). It's a Hanahaki comedy, two words I never would have thought would go together, but it works so well.

The Minutes of an Extraordinary Meeting of the Promenade Merchants' Association (ST:DS9, ensemble). It's Worf vs the Chamber of Commerce and Worf loses.

Until Death Do Us Part (Six of Crows, ensemble). Kaz and Inej are trying to get married, but first Kaz and Jesper need to get divorced. Everything about this is 100% believable and in character and hilarious.

5. 📆 A fic you’d re-read 10 years from now

An Hourglass in Hand (SW:TCW, Codywan). This is the daemon!AU of my dreams. I love this story so much that I honestly can't even put into words what I love about it because I love everything. I could have put this as an answer to 12 too because it sucked me in from the very first sentence.

Play It Again (Teen Wolf, ensemble). Yes, I am rec'ing a TW fic in the year 2024 with zero shame. I love this story and I've reread it every couple of years for the last decade so I feel like it fits perfectly. Stiles dimension travels and can never go home. PTSD and shenanigans ensue.

An Eye For Quality (The Hobbit, ensemble). This is another one I've reread multiple times over the past decade because I love it so much. Bella Baggins goes on a Quest, gets adopted by some dwarves, and helps to save the world, but it's so much more than just a genderswapped retelling of The Hobbit.

12. 💘 A fic you couldn't stop reading once you started

Trying to Escape What You Can't Let Go (SW:TCW, Fox & Boba). Fox takes in Boba in a No O66 world and everyone thinks Fox has lost his mind, Boba included. It's 38k words and I think I read it in one sitting the first time.

Maintenance Required (SW:TBB, Tech/TAY-0). I don't remember why I decided to read this fic, since I wasn't a big fan of the episode it's a tag to, but I'm glad I did because it's so good. I never would have thought I'd end up loving TAY-0 as much as I do when I first saw the summary. Plus there's art that's just gorgeous. This is definitely one of those stories where the stats don't do the story justice at all.

what fandoms do you write in? Star Trek, pretty much exclusively. Only TOS and DS9 so for (and I haven't even really finished anything DS9, I just have plans and WIPs). I may branch out a smidge someday, but I'll probably stay mostly in Star Trek.

how many words have you published in 2024? 4,763. I am a very slow writer lmao. Honestly even answering these questions feels like overkill with so few words published, but c'est la vie. I'll just pretend that I'm a Real Fanfic Author™, and if I do that for long enough, I eventually will be.

what is your greatest achievement this year? Posting anything at all! I had hoped I would, at the start of last year, but I hadn't really expected it. Now, I'm very glad I did (and that I joined Tumblr!).

what are your top three fics you've written this year? I only wrote two! So. Those.

what was your biggest pit of despair moment? I've had a fic that's been sosoclose to done since. like. July. And I have noooot finished it. So, probably that one. I wound up getting wildly discouraged with it, and have just kind of been, um. ignoring it. in the hopes that it'll start feeling salvageable again soon. It's not bad, I know it's not bad, but I can't actually convince myself that it's not bad, and I can't find the right ways to finish the few areas that still need more meat on their bones. I am fighting the urge to just up and delete half of it

what have you learned? That it feels really, really good to receive comments! I've also been slowly figuring out how best to wrangle my brain into Actually Writing, but it's. a work in progress!

did you beta any fics? any faves you want to shout out? So far, I've not had the chance to beta for anyone.

what three fics have you read this year that you love? Um. Oh god. Just three?? I suppose I'll say We can only be who we are by @jennelikejennay, Vision Awry by @walkingstackofbooks, and there may be a power cut (and maybe i love you so) by granspn (who afaik doesn't have a tumblr, but if they do, lmk and I'll tag them too)

(My bookmarks are always a good place to look for fics I've particularly enjoyed, so if ever you are in need of a rec list, that's a good place to start)

what ideas are percolating for next year? Oh, I have so many WIPs. There are a few in there that I'm very excited about, including one where Kirk drags Spock out of Kolinahr early and one where Spock is pining so obviously (to everyone except Kirk). I'd also kind of like to get a DS9 fic or two (and/or my mcspirk fic) published this year, but that relies on me being considerably more prolific than I was this year, so we'll see what happens. (Though, I should be getting ADHD meds at the end of the month, provided that my EKG checks out, which. will hopefully make things a bit easier lmao. I'll need to fight my brain a little less.)

If I am very, very lucky, I'll even be able to get a fic done for the KS Spring Fever. I've got an idea, but, well. Deadlines are rough, and the mind is fickle. I'll do my best (and anyone reading this has permission to hassle me about it and hold me accountable)!

Sweet Dreams Are Made of This DS9, Quodo cuddling, Odo is a blanket. Of all my fics this is the one I’m most perplexed by its kudo count. Are people that hungry for hurt/comfort pre-slash? Was it on a rec list of a popular blogger I’m unaware of? I don’t know, like it’s very nice it's good fic, but not one I think about often.

What Is This Feeling, So Sudden and New? DS9, Quodo, Odo adjusts to being solid, drinks all sorts of drinks, and has a sexual awakening. Now this is the fic I’m most proud of. That makes sense. Sexual tension! Plot! Emotional beats paced just right! (imo)

like to the lark at break of day arising OFMD, Stede/Ed’s first time, silly but emotional sex. This one I posted just at the right time in the fandom, and I had a lot of fun with it. Dumb banter, Stede gets carried away, Ed nuts and cries, I’m hitting all my favorite tropes lol.

Made Me Feel (Shiny and New) DS9, the sweetest hard Quodo, slow banging D/s double bluff. I never question a smut fic doing well. I assume you’re in it for the same reason I wrote it lmao.

Down On My Knees (I Wanna Take You There) DS9, Quodo, blowjob and tentacle sex. Ditto. :-P

Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? 

I always try to!!! The exception being if I’m not paying attention to fandom at all at the time, I go through phases like anything.

As a reader, I love to comment for the author interaction -- especially because sometimes you mention something you liked and it unlocks a whole interesting train of thought from the author about the behind the scenes insights, like a bonus meta. I’m obsessed by this pairing, you are too, please tell me everything hell yeah.

Do you write crossovers? 

I’ve written one Glee/TNG and one Glee/Harry Potter. Not generally though.

Do you write smut? If so, what kind? 

Yes. Oh idk whatever I think is hot that the character also might be into. It has to be goofy, somewhat ridiculous, and definitely too many feelings are involved... 

Have you ever had a fic stolen? 

Not that I know.

Have you ever had a fic translated? 

I think someone asked me for permission once or twice, but I don’t remember if I saw the final result.

Have you ever co-written a fic before? 

No, gosh that’d really have to be the right person because it sounds maddening as a process. The potential to be more fun?? But potentially more frustrating.

What's your all time favorite ship? 

Oh you know. Somehow I started writing for rubber head aliens and never looked back.

What's a WIP that you want to finish but probably never will? 

I’m bad at starting things (there are tons of fic prompts I squirrel away for a rainy day), but compulsive about finishing them. If I have more than a couple hundred words written, by jove I’ll figure out a way to get to something I can call a final product that I share, even if it's several years later. 

Even when I’ve posted WIPs, almost the entire fic was written, I just needed to iron out details in the second part and only published the first part to stop myself from messing with it. Actually, exception that proves the rule (?) Coin-Operated Boy is my first true WIP, where I have a long list of ideas brainstormed, but I’m writing a bit by the seat of my pants rather than having all the plot points mapped out already. We’ll see how that goes, always fun to try something new!!

I’m also still committed to finishing the fic I started where Quark and Odo meet in prison and escape together based on this one comic about Rocket/Groot I read. I have like 7k written but there’s a looooot of rough sketchy bits and both details and broad strokes I have to figure out first.

What are your writing strengths? 

Managing tone? Something I enjoy doing anyway -- zipping along on a wild ride from goofy to angsty to heartfelt to absurd and back again. I’ve also been told I’m good at weird banter lol.

What are your writing weaknesses? 

Awkward run on sentences where I’m trying to pack too much in at once. PLOT ??? WHAT IS PLOT why can’t the characters just have a lot of feelings for no reason idk idk. being heavy handed with metaphors and ~themes~

What's a fandom/ship you haven't written for yet, but want to? 

I want to write for Phlox sometime. I’m sure there’s a Quark rare pair I haven’t touched yet that’ll get obsessed with enough for a oneshot lol.

What's your favorite fic that you've written?

“What Is This Feeling?” has my whole heart. 

"Dinner for One" also has a special place - getting out my Sisko family feels, plus I pulled off making Siskuark happen (briefly) lol.
