Why are rain frogs so round? What's /inside/ of them around such an itty bitty skeleton?

So it turns out this is a really interesting question.

The first thing we must be aware of is that rainfrogs as we see them in videos of them squeaking are not quite the same shape as they are when at rest:

But you are quite right, they are very round. This is exemplified by the skeletal photo you refer to:

So what are we seeing?

Well, firstly, note that the body cavity in these frogs actually envelops the femurs, such that only the tibiofibula (fused in frogs) and the tarsals and metatarsals are outside the body. The arms are quite similarly enveloped, but a bit of the humerus does extend outside the body cavity too. This predisposes them to a rounder body shape.

Next, note the ilia - the U-shaped bone in the pelvic region. These in some breviceptid frogs are synostotically fused with the sacrum - that is to say, they are bound by bone-based connections to the bow-shaped vertebra at their tips. This whole joint seems to be quite smooth, and as a consequence, the back of the frog is quite smooth. The other thing we can see here is that the urostyle (i.e. the frog version of a coccyx) juts quite far beyond the ischium and pubis. This extends the body cavity beyond the hips. Note also that the pelvic girdle seems to be largely below the spine, rather than the typical position for frogs behind it and continuous with it. This makes the legs sit below the spine, rather than at its end, enhnacing the vertical roundness of the animal.

Next, let’s talk some soft tissue. Now, I’m not as familiar with soft-tissue in frogs as I am their skeletons, so you’ll have to bear with me a bit (rawr). Beddard (1908!!) studied the soft tissue of Breviceps verrucosus Rapp 1842. It seems that the majority of the body of these frogs is actually muscle. Beddard noted that muscles join the leg at the knee that extend into the body cavity, such that the inclusion of the thigh in the body cavity is further accentuated by musculature. The rectus abdominalis muscle is unusually large, extending from the lower abdomen up and around the sides of the body. Indeed, this large size appears to be the pattern with all of the major muscles, though in the throat the typical arrangement of large and small muscles is somewhat reversed. On the lateral side of the head, there is a substance that is not muscle, but appears to be loose tissue in which sits what is apparently the thymus gland.

There is a very large gap between the end of the urostyle and the anus (one fifth of the total length of the frog), in which there are almost no muscles, save for the one surrounding the lower cloaca. On either side of this area, between the posterior-most muscles of the thigh, lie two large ‘lymph-hearts’, as described by Beddard. These are between one quarter and one third of the total length of the frog. A further lypmh-sac sits between these lymph-hearts and the skin of the femoral region, and they are thus probably analogous to the femoral lymph-sacs of other frogs.

I find it interesting that Beddard (1908) did not mention any glandular formations in the dorsal region. As is evidence from many images (see below), these frogs are able to secrete a white, sticky, noxious substance from their skin (which they actually have to use during amplexus, as the male is too small relative to the female to mount her properly, and so he sticks himself to her with his glandular glue… kinky).

These glands do not apparently take up a great deal of the cutaneous tissue, and so I suppose are of no consequence to the size of the frog, especially relative to its enormous muscles.

The diet of these frogs consists almost exclusively of hymenopterans and isopterans (ants and termites). Neither of these insect groups are particularly fatty, so it is little surprise that their bodies appear to contain no large fat deposits - fatty bodies extend from the gonads up to the lungs and heart, but these comprise only a tiny fraction of the frog’s mass, and don’t contribute to the round shape. Instead, their bodies are extremely muscular, allowing them to be adept burrowers, ideal for their fossorial lifestyle.

So TL;DR: rain frogs are little balls of muscle (maybe the largest muscle mass relative to body mass of any vertebrate? science just doesn’t know).

I’ve been working on an original character for a while, and I think it’s finally time to introduce him…

His name is Aiden Gou, and he’s a detective sergeant that I created for Midsomer Murders. The show obviously isn’t known for having a diverse set of main characters, so that’s part of the reason why I’ve created an Asian detective. But the other reason is just that I’m of Chinese heritage myself, and I’ve always loved crime shows- and I decided to combine that together.

I’ve drawn and listed some information about my oc (and I’m happy to elaborate on that info, shoot me an ask if you wanna know more about him!) and a lot of his background info is inspired from my life.

I have some stories typed up, most of which are about my oc’s relations to canonical characters of Midsomer Murders, and I’ll link them here every time they get posted :) [this post is probably gonna be pinned, for a long time as well]

So now that my logistics are out of the way…here’s my sergeant oc!

Additional info about Aiden:

• Aiden is not Jamie’s replacement, but is an addition to the team (because the thought of Jamie leaving put me in distress); he is part of a detective trio!

• a very stealthy dude who scares the shit out of people because they don’t realize he’s behind them until they turn around or he makes a noise to get their attention (a recurring thing in my stories)

• he used to work under DI Ben Jones! \(^o^)/

• he also met Fleur before- she was invited to do a seminar at Aiden’s university for forensic science (since she’s full of surprises in the show, I decided it would be appropriate)

• Aiden is always gonna be described or seen in a three-piece suit with his sleeves rolled up, but without the actual jacket to complete the outfit…he just substitutes it with a random trench coat 0_0

• the second character of his Chinese name (爱) means “love”

• pronunciation of his surname (Gou): just think of how you would pronounce the word “go”, and that’s honestly the best I can describe it

• are his parents supportive of him being aroace? for my peace of mind, yes, I’ve created that dynamic because it’s a stigma in Chinese culture that I wanted to defy :)

• 180cm is actually tall for dudes from China’s Sichuan province (they’re normally way shorter, but i based Aiden’s height off of what my brother’s predicted height is going to be)

• when I say that Sichuan food is spicy, I mean SPICY, like go search it up on google and you’ll see what I mean 0_0

• Aiden’s hobbies: gaming, watercolour painting, cosplaying (with Jamie, because I may or may not have set them up to be good friends in addition to working together), badminton, photography, mahjong (it’s a game commonly played in China, and specifically common in Sichuan)

• four words: knitting buddies with Jamie (I threw the idea of Jamie’s knitting hobby out there…in some post from a small while back)

previously talked about how i happened to find munchlax in a honey tree in platinum so i ended up going for feebas too

ive also been doing more things i never did in my original gen iv playthroughs--encountered spiritomb ingame (i think me and my friend didnt know if we left the underground and came back we could meet each other again until we hit 32, because we never got close to getting it despite also stealing 50 flags from each other. now that i have a ds and a 3ds and both diamond and platinum i can just do it all on my own, so i did)

i was also originally not going to do the great marsh because ive always hated safari zones (thank god they havent done one since gen iv) but then i realized that since im also working on a living dex where all of the gen iv pokemon will have dpp as their game of origin (note: not hgss, sinnoh specifically), the tangela i transferred from gen iii wouldnt let me fill tangrowth’s spot once evolved so im like ok, how easy is it to find tangela in there? and it’s 25% in the right area, so i decided to go after it

got one pretty easily, as well as a yanma (yanmega would be in the same situation as tangrowth in the living dex but i forgot about it until then) and then i learned each area has its own random pokemon every day i decided to try to figure out what they were

at first it was stuff i’d already transferred from pal park because i wasnt going to do the great marsh (kecleon, shroomish) but then... i ran into toxicroak?? which is apparently one of the rarest ones. and also not necessary since platinum has croagunk on route 212 but now i dont have to evolve it

i also found a skorupi, then came back the next day and looked through the binoculars a few times until i saw carnivine, which i saw was in one of the front areas, so i ran in there and got it on my very first encounter with the first safari ball. now thats a fateful encounter

so thats the first time i actually caught the great marsh exclusive sinnoh pokemon in the great marsh, wow! back then i just got them from the gts. the great marsh isnt actually that bad though i guess, if bdsp leaves it unchanged (rather than letting you catch pokemon normally like oras did) i wouldnt mind too much i suppose. still hope they get rid of it though. my biggest fear is running into a shiny pokemon in there and having it flee and the rate is higher in gen viii

anyway i guess the only other hard thing left to catch is the level 100 magikarp in the resort area. having seen gou do it in the anime a while back, im inspired to try

Folge 108 fand ich riichtig schön. Nicht nur Greninja, sondern auch paar andere Dinge als build up für den kampf gegen Raihan. Und obwohl noch andere Szenen VOR dem Flug waren, wirkte es nicht zu schnell

Ich liebe wie Ash überhaupt auf die Idee kommt Ninja zu suchen, ich find toll wie das kein einfach fast travel war, sondern sie ihn GESUCHT haben, keinen Erfolg hatten und dann die Aura und das Bond genutzt wurden, um Greninja zu bemerken und wie ds nicht einfach hingehen war. Der erste Auftritt vom Frosch nach Jahren war auch echt cool, dafür haben sie die Ranken gelohnt, weil es einen coolen Auftritt hatte. Viiiel Continuity als Ash im Flug vom Frosch gesprochen hat, mehr Szenen als in den Magazinen

Ich fand auch toll wie sie zwar nicht Ash-Greninja gezeigt haben, aber sie haben das enge Bündnis gezeigt mit der Aura, wie es visuell gezeigt wurden ist und auch wieder die selben Bewegungen für Wasser-Shuriken :D Hat mich echt vieles gefreut,d er Frosch war cool, schöne XY OSTs wieder und wie Frosch mit Lucario interagiert hat. Tolle Folge echt.

Gous Froakie hat sich SCHNELL entwickelt und dann Ash... seine Augen haben gewackelt und so hat er sich an Grneinja erinnert und ich fand das echt schön gemacht. Wie er so auf den Frosch schaut und man merkte sofort, so wird er erneut eingebaut. Ich fand das echt toll und ebsser als das einfach so random zu erwähnen.

Weiteres Built Up für nächste Woche. Ich denke, weil der Kampf nur eine Folge wird, haben sie das gemacht, damit es noch besser wirkt. Fand ich nice wie wir Raihans Gedanken sahen und auch seine Seite als Teilnehmer beim PWC. Wie er da auch leicht zweifelt und an seine Niederlage gegen Leon denkt

Sooo viele Flashbacks einfach, die ich später erneut hochlade. Ich fand schön wie die Suche halt länger dauerte und dafür mehrere Komponenten eingebaut worden sind. Wie Ash über Frosch erzählt, die Flashbacks und dann die Aura mitten in der Nacht. Echt richtige throwbacks

Super cooler Auftritt gegen die Ranken. Auch Lucario war verblüfft und ich fand diese kleinen Sachen toll wie das mit dem Bond hier von Ash und Greninja, obwohl die Form nicht gezeigt wurden ist. Direkt gegen die erste Ranke mit diesen visual

Die beiden... der Frosch war dauernd echt cool drauf, richtig gelassen, aber find ich auch normal, weil Lucario eher im Fokus stand mit dem Training und es komisch wäre, wenn Greninja anders gezeigt wird

Frosch eindeutig überlegen und dann dieses.. Training. Ich fand die Szene interessant wie sie im Wasser standen und so leicht getippt haben mit den Füßen. Da waren keine Worte, aber ich nehme an, dass war kleines Training für Lucario von Quajutsu, damit irgendwas auf der selben Ebene ist? Oder damit es konzentrierter wird?  Ich habe NULL Ahnung, da wird nichts gesagt und wir sehen dann diese Visuals mit der Aura etc

Ich find die Szene aber gut. MUSS man interepretieren, aber danach sah auch Lucario die Ranke und ich denke, dass war dafür da Ash zu spüren oder so. Ach, ist halt Interpretation hier

Ist ein nettes Power Up ohne was auszudenken. Mal sehen wie das zusammen mit der Aura vs Raihan genutzt wird.

“Nuwe Kerk” in Pietermaritzburg ingewy

Op die Sondagoggend is die “Nuwe Kerk” van die Nederduits Gereformeerde gemeente Pietermaritzburg in ’n gees van nederige, diepe dankbaarheid ingewy. Dit is gebou op die halwe erf van Langmarkstraat 34.

Ds. P Huet was toe predikant van die gemeente, en verskeie hooggeplaastes, soos die luitenant-goewerneur, die hoofregter en die sekretaris van naturellesake, het saam met die gemeente die inwydingsplegtigheid bygewoon. Dit was die tweede kerkgebou van die gemeente en is opgerig onmiddellik langs die eerste, die Geloftekerk, wat tans die Voortrekkermuseum is. Die twee geboue het min of meer dieselfde getal sitplekke gehad, maar die nuwe gebou het nodig geword omdat, soos dr. HE Faure – predikant van die gemeente in 1855 – op 18 Julie van daardie jaar aan die regering verklaar het, “the one at present in use is altogether in a state of dilapidation.”

Die oprigting van die “Nuwe Kerk” was vir die gemeente ’n besondere prestasie. Die mense was arm, en met groot moeite is die nodige geld gevind deur middel van kollektelyste en lenings en deur die verkoop van kerkgrond in die distrik. Vir Afrikaners van Pietermaritzburg in die besonder en Natal in die algemeen was die gebou baie jare lank ’n geestelike, en kulturele, swaartepunt.

Onder sommige mense het die indruk posgevat dat die “Nuwe Kerk” die eintlike Geloftekerk is. Die moet waarskynlik daaraan toegeskrywe word dat hierdie tweede kerkgebou met soveel dankbaarheid en vreugde in ontvangs geneem is; en ook omdat, nadat die eerste gebou voltooi was, daar al gou die gedagte ontstaan het om, wanneer meer geld beskikbaar is, ’n nuwe kerkgebou op te rig – wat toe in werklikheid die “Nuwe Kerk” was. Hierdie indruk is egter nie korrek nie.

Die eerste gebou, die huidige Voortrekkermuseum, is die ware Kerk van die Gelofte. Afdoende bewyse hiervoor vind ons onder meer in die kollektelyste wat reeds kort na die Slag by Bloedrivier rondgeneem is om geld en voorrade vir die oprigting van die gebou in te samel. Die redakteur van De Zuid-Afrikaan, CJ Brand van Kaapstad, wat aktief met die insameling gehelp het, skryf bv. op 13 Junie 1839 aan Andries Pretorius: “Ik heb eene intekening lyst alhier geopend tot bydragen van het opbouwen des tempels, welke gy den Heere hebt beloofd.”

it’s time to write down last nights dream.

i think that not too long ago there was an actual harry potter event with the hogwarts express going on in london and part of that was in my dream so, yeah.

the hogwarts express event in my dream was riding the train full of fans, while watching all the movies on the trip. and the breaks in between made this a very long movie marathon. so i was sitting in that train, and they announced how everything was going to work and so on. not too long after that and before the first movie, an alarm went off and everyone including me started to move through the train. to see the movie, that was also gonna play in the train, but people wanted to see it in cinema, and not the train. even though that was the whole fucking deal. getting out of the train, i realized that said train, was on a fucking ship. likea huge titanic like fucking ship. it was a fucking harry potter cruise ship with fucking train on board.

so me and some people started moving forward to the cinema, on the ship, to get a good seat. and just as i got in the theater i threw my jacket and snacks and everything on a seat that was still empty. for some reason as i went down the steps to get to that seat, i found a pink diamond earring on the floor and mila kunis who was sitting on the seat next to me told me it was hers. and i was like, hell no, that’s mine, and i showed her that i wore a pair of the same earrings. but i had one on each ear so it didn’t really make sense. so i told her that they always sell two pairs together and she said i was wrong. i found another diamond jewelry thing on the floor and told her that i guess that she was right and that the earring is hers and that this new thing was in my set. she agreed.

i then sat down next to mila kunis and saw that she was disgusted by me. same for the people around me. and then i realized all of them wore super fancy clothes and that this ship was like the titanic in terms of classes. which means they were the rich upper class and i had the cheapest possible ticket and they weren’t happy that i was sitting with the rich. as the movie was finally gonna start, every single one got their nintendo ds’s out and started battling with other people on board. and the harry potter movie wasn’t a thing anymore. it was all about pokemon now.

i didn’t really get how these battles worked so i thought i had to go find my battle partner irl on the ship and so i started running around to find them. somewhere in the upperclass i then found @time-to-gou sitting with her friends, chilling and playing pokemon. they were sitting under parasols even though we were inside but ok. and she wore a pretty fried pink wig for no reason. so i asked her how this whole thing works and it was super awkward because she didn’t really want to talk to me because she wanted to spend some quality time with her friends. (i forgive you lol)

after that i ran around the ship again and had people follow me to beat me up because i walked through the rich class and i wasn’t supposed to be there. so i ended up beating a lot of ass on that ship. a LOT of ass.

the only thing i remember after this was that i wasn’t on ship anymore. and it was night. and that i walked through the playground of my old workplace, the day care thing. and i walked past some of the people i used to work with and i stared at the floor passing right next to them. i then later went to a fast food restaurant and wanted to order on their touch screen self ordering machine things. but the one i was using was for fish products only? so i had to change to a regular machine. and as i was waiting for my order to get prepaired, i saw some of the work people i just had passed. so obviously they were pissed at me for not saying hello before and asked what my deal was. i then said i didn’t see them since i stared at the ground so, no see, no hello.
