Opinions on dessert types (like a top ten or something?) (also sorry if u get 2 of these i tried sending one and my browser got stuck loading)
dessert types huh? hm..
(did not expect to actually construct a ranked list of 10 dessert genres but here we go)
1: ice cream - it is versatile, it is sweet, it is cold. too cold for you? thats okay! it turns into quite the delicious goop as well!! iced cream is THE penultimate tasty fucking treat. i dont care what anyone else says, ice cream is the salad of desserts. you crave chocolate you have chocolate chunkin brownie bitchin iced creams. okay? and NEVER write off frozen yogurt either, okay? … OKAY?? (it is tasty and well, yogurt is good for you too!)
2: chocolate - erm. yeah. i can just say chocolate. no it isnt just a flavour. chocolate bars, candies, snacks. portable, munchable… expensive. for the best.
3: cookies - the CRUMBLY KIND!!!!! sorry soft cookie enjoyers but when you dunk a soft cookie into milk and you get the same damn cookie but a little COLDER. those thangs dont absorb the milk. and this isnt just about milk dippers- its back to ICE CREAM. you ever crumble a tasty fucking crunchy cookie into a bowl of good vanilla? like. dont get dairy queen. go make some dry cookies right now and use ANY ICE CREAM with actual vanilla bean (extra triple creamy iced creams are kind of a scam they dont taste different and oh also watch out for anything calling itself a frozen dessert that is not truly iced cream.)
4: drinks. Here- have your dessert through a straw, or brave the frontiers with a spoon. milkshakes, iced coffees, ice cream floats, hot chocolates, milk teas.. regular coffee is a dessert to me i guess with this logic. at least with how im drinking it.
5: PASTRIES! Fluffin fuckin tasty flakey holy shit. fresh pastry. uhuh. cream raspberry filling pleaze- littol glaze please… :) croissants count here which gives pastry a very strong edge against any other foods..
6: cake, i guess. has to be good cake. can not have fucking coco nut shreds upon it. can not have pure sugar icing. favourites of mine are cheesecake, a good chocolate cake, and angel food cake with a whipped pudding icing.
7: okay, pie. it can be pretty damn good, it can be very tasty, but the harmony of pastry and filling can be tricky, at least with my autistic DISTASTE for most whole fruits.
8: jello. i had a dream recently that like. i brought back jello foods. and it was good. cause i did it good. so sure. jello. saves your fuckin LIFE while sick, too.
9: dishonourable mentions: popsicles, sour sweets, stuff with cherries, almonds / bland nuts, coconut, fruit chunks according to Slimeo’s 2024 guide to The Ick, black liquorice, “desert pizzas”and anything that is pure sugar. WHICH IS A LOT.
10: brownies. we dont talk about brownies.
0, (ascendant): cinnamon rolls. truly too good and too pure to rank. above all but too humble to hold the title. WE LOVE YOU CINNAMON ROLL

finally the other topic thats been on my mind. the food. oohhh the food. enormous post warning. i hope to god the read more works.
ok for starters. its good. i cant complain. variety and spread were pretty great (goes so hard to have diaspora from all over the world in your country you literally can get anything if you know where to look), quality was good, portions are INCREDIBLY generous even considering price most of the time, and price is....fine. i hated it bc again exchange rates fucked me over but i didnt see anything... outrageous anywhere we went to OTHER than the baseball game but that i expected and was prepared for so i didnt like, insta vomit when i saw the menu. i didnt try nearly everything i wanted to but, well, i have limited space in my tummy.
there were... some questionable items. at the store. like, ham with cheese inside it that looked like it had some kind of pox. all sorts of um. wrong looking. gooey cheese products. all very yellow and with a scary toxic look to them. i did eat the cheetos tho they were fine and acceptably orange.
like... im sorry. this isnt ok. this shouldnt exist. this is wrong.
there were also all sorts of what id consider, niche? not very high circulation? products. that looked interesting. also cheeses, this time delicious and amazing (im still so pissed i left the horseradish cheddar i wanted to bring home in ks fridge), great great snacks, treats of all sorts (some good some eh?), all kinds of baking ingredients and cooking ingredients, so many dry spices and powders and seasonings. asian ingredients and mexican ingredients seemed greatly favored which tbh was appreciated bc there was stuff id never seen before that got me very curious + i found my fav mexican candy which i missed. also, chicken is p cheap over there, i was surprised its basically as cheap as it is here, maybe slightly cheaper even. all in all, tbh, you can eat pretty well buying fairly cheap and healthy items with...not many problems. like...a big big bag of kale was like...4 usd. thats so good. chicken and tuna and sardines were cheap. pasta is cheap as hell as it is everywhere. veggies and fruit are kind of hit or miss but i think thats somewhat seasonal as it is everywhere. canned food is cheaper there too?? not bad at all. next time i want to go to a costco and see how it goes to buy stuff in bulk, it looks promising.
idk where im going w this post so now im just gonna list the memorable meals or treats or ingredients i sampled/had over there (inconsistent list bc some are homemade meals made by moi + k but whatever) and rate them. i cant put these on a normal list bc im breaking the character limit so please bear with my horrible formatting.
baseball game hotdog: 7/10 disappointingly small for the...10? 11? usd it cost. nice mustard and onions on top. NO MAYO. ketchup and relish were Fine. at least 2-3 points of the score are just the fact it was a true baseball hotdog and my first one at that. the experience is very important for this one. i cherished that more than most other things in this "meal" so id feel bad rating it lower.
baseball garlicky fries: 8/10. again 3 points for the experience and novelty of it being baseball food. i think they were 9 dollars. ok portion. CRAZY AMNTS OF GARLIC YUM. pretty tasty. NO MAYO THO!!
double cheese burger + fries + onion rings + peanut butter milkshake: 10/10. true american meal. enormous burger. couldnt finish anything other than the milkshake and k helped w that + i was about to genuinely frow up by the time i tried the last spoonful of it. the whole thing i think was about 25-30? usd each? i dont even care. it was delicious, i think the mayo was made by the restaurant itself, it was so good. beef patties were great. vegetables were great. pickles were really good. gooey ass american cheese was great. fries were crazy. onion rings were perfect. just delicious. will go again next time im there.
pho + spring rolls: 5.5/10. not bad at all. but i think pho was greatly overhyped. i ordered it w tendon and tripe which was nice to have in the us bc i know they dont like organ meats at all. it was ok. its one of those soups that i guess gets better kinda by the end when its all gotten mixed up and nicely flavored. ive had better soups though. sorry i fumbled the tip.
sushi: 8/10. nice! didnt try even close to all the options but the eel was DELICIOUS + the maki sushi was good and, honestly, very well portioned. i dont like when the maki sushi is huge esp when im trying to sample many types. and some of the salads and soups....hell yes. good price! comparable to nice sushi places here, i didnt feel it was scandalous. im giving it an 8 bc it was tasty as fuck, but i do have a comment on this. i think the us does the same thing we do which is, they shove a bunch of ingredients into maki sushi to make new ones with a lot of shit in them and im not the biggest fan of that so i didnt order those. i like simple sushi. the ones i ordered were really good tho. 8/10 for those, i dont think ill order the other ones unless i was feeling suuuper experimental. same as it ever was.
deluxe kraft mac and cheese, orig cheddar: 5/10 without adding anything to it, solid 6 with better cheese + bbq sauced hot dog in it. see we had just watched the jerma reviews mac and cheese video and we happened to find this at the store so obviously we had to try it. it was just normal mac and cheese. i think american kraft has a stronger and kinda. nastier. cheese flavor in it. so we added real cheese and other things and it was better. solid dinner.
mcdonalds: mcdonalds/mcdonalds. its mcds. it tastes the same everywhere apparently. it was fine. fresh fries were nice tho.
taco bell chicken quesadilla: 2/10. i dont really like taco bell and i kind of objected to this meal and only had a little bit. flavorful in weirdly wrong ways. not Offensive but, yknow, a strong I Would Prefer Not To. also, made me a little bloated even with lactaid to help me cope.
various food items at family meeting: 7/10. im not rating them individually there were too many, this is an average. the ones that stood out were: crispy crispy bacon for brekky. biscuits and gravy. funeral potatos? thats what they called it i think? the yogurt + fruit + maple syrup granola bowl and the smoked trout. i think this is because it was a family thing, but if not i guess it still applies? homemade american dishes are so fucking rich. im not sure i could stand eating like that every day. i know by the end of the weekend i was like.. i need normal salad. i need some rice. this cant go on forever. still, i enjoyed every dish i tried. tasty stuff!
sweet corn we roasted in a fire: 10/10 brother i love sweet corn and oonnhh hhn the butter on it. yea man. its good.
special coffee drink + bagel w cream cheese: 7/10. very generous bagel for like...under 3 usd. 3rd worlder ass price for the crazy amnt of cheese it had imho and like, i shared it with k and i was still very satisfied with the portion i got. the coffee drink was very nice. i have no idea what that woman put in it other than the 2 large espresso shots and ice i saw she added. tasty tho! and she was nice. sorry i was very bad at understanding your accent. i realized im still not at all used to that.
espresso + chocolate truffle: 9/10 just what i needed after the fish and chips feast. beautifully smooth coffee, good crema, smelled good, tasted good. great texture, good price. 8 usd for...2 espressos and 2 truffles. i think thats more than acceptable, esp in the highly touristy area we were in. the truffle itself i think was a little ordinary but paired so well w the coffee the whole thing was a win. lovely to have it next to the sea w my love after stuffing ourselves full w fish and chips. speaking of which.
fish (cod and calamari and shrimp) and chips + cider: 10/10 my god. my god. this rivals peruvian jalea. i never believed it would be possible. but it is. it was great. fresh out the fryer, pleasantly greasy but not excessively so. great flavor. great fish. nice portion. amazingggg cider and really nice tartar sauce. just what i needed after walking around for a couple hours. just a great fucking meal. will def go again if i can.
glazed? powdered? donuts? we got at the store? i dont remember the brand or name but i was curious so i grabbed a thing and k said they were pretty good: 2/10 meh. they were... whatever. i think i had one w breakfast and then i sort of gave up on them. kind of dry and too dense for a donut. maybe they were cake donuts? i dont know. i shouldnt have strayed from dunkin, im sorry dunkin. ill never let you down again.
salt vinegar chips: 10/10 one of those snacks i just. would compulsively buy if i lived there. like this would be my go to snack. they hurt the roof of my mouth but its worth it also i like the sourness bc it makes me pace myself a little.
normal ruffles: ruffles/ruffles. i like a good wavy potato chip. what can i say. i enjoyed them.
american bacon: 8/10. i understand why the us has crazy rates of cardiovascular disease. i get it. maybe its worth it. it gets one whole point solely bc of the crazy amnt of fat you can render out of it, bacon fat was Not Lacking while we cooked and i thank the bacon for this, because thats a great ingredient to have around imho.
tap water: 10/10. preddy good!
mexican limes: 2/10. im actively racist against these citrus fruits. so much flesh, no juice. they did their job and tasted Fine I Guess but they were still lame. peruvian lime or nothing baby.
fuji apples: 8/10. im fujiapplepilled. theyre nice. crispy. go well with peanut butter. yum! nice that they are grown there.
cheetos: 5/10. i had the puffs and the normal..crispy ones? non spicy bc i dont like the spicy ones. i was satisfied. theyre better than ours. still not the best snack but i was curious. bigger portion than im used to. i think i would simply not let children have them though.
beef hot dogs, from the store. in and without bun: 9/10 broooo americans are just good at these. they put like actual meat in them. theyre dense. theyre large. delicious stuff. versatile enough, reasonably priced. if this isnt their national pride it should be. wish i could have brought a pack home. my fam would love these.
some kind of mexican chorizo thing: 4/10. it was ok. k had this in the fridge when i got there? its like salchicha huachana but less good, less fresh, less colourful and less flavorful. it did what we needed it to do, i didnt dislike it. it was just. fine.
ranier beer: 7/10. yum! pleasant. slightly sweet. a fine drink for a warm sunny day. great with snacks or other treats.
pabst blue ribbon: 6/10. yum also! i liked rainier a little better tho.
the 2 ipas i had: 0/10. the only thing i had that i actively disliked. yuck. just nasty stuff.
wait i forgot
jeppsons malort: -1/10. @worldlytutor why the fuck did you buy that. that shit tasted like rat poison fr. throw that shit away rn if you still have it.

Today 8th August has been an exhausting but very fruitful day.
Hubby went to the hospital to have his stump checked, pump removed and bandaged back up. Only 1 tiny spot is still leaking. So they'll keep repeating this process until the wound area is fully healed and stitches finally removed.
Whilst there, we went for a coffee and had a toastie each. A little girl had an oopsie moment when she accidentally tipped her milkshake onto the floor. She instantly burst into tears when she realised what she did. Her mum remained calm and mopped as much up as she could. A staff member cleaned the rest. If it had been me, my mum would have given me hell and reminded me of how much she'd paid for that.
How times have changed
We popped up to the ward where hubby has been staying, to drop off thank-you gifts - boxes of biscuits and I was treated to a brand new bag/purse/mobile phone holder combo. Because my backpack is now falling apart.
En route home via the bus, we managed to get some decent seats and instead of going straight home, we decided to travel further and pop into a charity shop. Where they'd advertised a bomber jacket that was perfect for Bossys hubby. It's his birthday soon so that was one gift sorted.
We also got a wee haul of a few items
Buttons
Knitting needles
Ribbons
Zips
A glass jug
A wheelchair cushion
And
Some really fancy yarn!
We decided to take a nice walk back home and hubby treated himself to an electronic chess set!
Further on, we popped into Aldi to 'look around ' and spent a fortune on shopping. So we had to get a taxi back home
So yeah, my back was absolutely aching so I chilled out as soon as we got home. Hubby went for a lie down and I zonked out almost immediately!
We had home made burgers for tea and a bowl of fresh fruit and jelly for dessert
Hoping to have steak dinner tomorrow. Hubby is really impressed with the rotisserie/airfryer because it cooks meats perfectly without drying them out too much.
And he was glad that I came along to the appointment and showed him how easy it is to take your time and not rush around so much. There's so much more you can see.
On the bus, I spotted an aeroplane flying very low, it must have either taken off or was landing somewhere!

Things you can drink/take to help you stay hydrated that are not just water
Water is the healthiest, easiest and cheapest way to stay hydrated. But for some people it is difficult or impossible. Sometimes it's also just boring and you don't. Sometimes it's not enough to recover from being dehydrated. So here are other ideas to stay hydrated when it's hot, ordered from more water-like to less water-lik:
Make "flavoury water" (as I call it): some tea-shops sell dry fruits and flowers with no theine/caffeine that give taste to water. You can also cut some lemon in slices and put it in water (mint optional). Feel free to try with your own dry fruits or average fruits, see what comes out of that. This feels more refreshing that plain water and the taste sometimes is just what you were missing unknowingly.
The same but hot. Yes, it feels like hot weather drives hot drinks away, but sometimes they are a gift from the gods. I will mention here: soups. I particularly like this option at night.
Kompot. This is a Russian conserve for fruits that consists on boiling fruit with sugar so that it lasts for winter. You get a drink with all the flavour and, if you like, you can also eat the fuit that is left floating inside of it. I either mix the fruit with the water (taking the seed off) or throw the fruit away because I don't like it. It is my favourite summer drink.
Sodas and other classical refreshments. It is always best to drink something that to not drink anything, don't let anyone tell you that Coca-Cola is not an option. Do keep in mind that Aquarius is not necessarily a good option for electrolytes, it's more an average refreshment than real help in case of severe dehydration.
Jelly. Particularly good if you struggle to swallow for whatever the reason. Excellent option also because you can suspend fruit in it (if you like extra textures). You can make it thicker or ligther too, in case you feel like chewing water more than slurping it.
Slushies. Specially good if you like the crunch of the ice.
Milkshakes and smoothies. They are technically different and the texture can be different too, but in my head they live together. So yeah, fruit mixed together with water or milk. Probably smoothies hydrate more than milkshakes but options!
Cold soups. Gazpacho, vichysoisse... (any other soup/puré you make that want to try cold). They have a thicker consistency than any of the other, but they have a lot of water and vegetables (which also have water). Particularly good if you struggle with pure liquids or require more nutrients than just drinking water with flavour.
Ice creams? I guess you can count them too, they do have liquid, and we included milkshakes. Probably not the best option for hydration but complementary to others.
Fruit and vegetables. They tend to have a lot of water too, some more than others, but it's also a good way to have nutrients and stay hydrated. You can make salads, fruit salads, just bite it...
Overall, a combination of all of the above should keep you covered. Remember to play around with ingredients, textures and flavours too.

The Ben n Jerry’s super thick milkshake recipe is 4 big scoops of ice cream and 1 cup of milk. Blend for fifteen seconds. I use Hagan daaz and oat milk because it doesn’t go bad quite as fast.
The smoothie recipes are 3 big scoops sorbet, 1 dry measure cup of frozen fruit, and one wet measure cup of fruit juice.
Enjoy.

Food history time! So why do we consider "vanilla" to be "plain? Because of vanillin, which is a different thing.
OP underplays real vanilla. Not only is it the fruit of a delicate orchid pollinated by hand, it only blooms after the orchid is four years old and only blooms once per year. It must be pollinated during that time, either by a very specific species of bee or by hand. The pods then must be harvested by hand and put through a complex drying/aging/fermenting process that involves very specific temperatures and controlled exposure to sunlight then covering the pods in blankets. It is the second most expensive food product in the world after saffron.
So why is vanilla extract so cheap? Because it's not vanilla. It's vanillin.
Vanillin is the chemical compound that gives vanilla its vanilla flavor. In the 1930s, scientists figured out cheap methods of synthesizing vanillin out of wood (and glands of beavers, but that's not as commonly used these days). In fact, the specific processed wood used in making vanillin is a waste product from producing paper, so it's a form of recycling.
Now, imagine you're living in the 1930s. This rare product that was reserved solely for the wealthy is now suddenly very available and very cheap. What are you going to do?
PUT IT IN ALL THE THINGS!!
So imitation vanilla extract became a standard flavoring in many sweet products and a surprising amount of savory ones. Advancements in refrigeration technology also meant easy creation and commercial availability of ice cream. Again, formerly a rare and expensive treat, vanilla ice cream was now dirt cheap to make and store. Since vanilla ice cream is simply a standard ice cream base with vanilla flavoring added (and vanilla was added to everything, including other ice cream flavors), it became seen as the "standard" of ice cream to which other flavors were added if wanted. Chocolate ice cream is vanilla ice cream with chocolate/cocoa, strawberry ice cream is vanilla ice cream with strawberry, etc.
It was also the base that other desserts were built on such as ice cream sundaes, milkshakes, floats, pie a la mode, etc. where the subtle flavor of the vanilla was overshadowed by the other flavors involved (chocolate syrup, malt, soda, pie).
Over time, this evolved into an impression that vanilla was the generic ingredient that you added more things to rather than an exotic and rare spice.
REAL Vanilla, of course, is far more than just vanillin which is why real vanilla tastes so much better than imitation vanilla. The flavors are far more subtle and nuanced, and because of that they can easily be crushed by stronger flavors or lost during some cooking processes so all you get is the strong vanillin flavor anyway.
But that's the story of how something so rare and difficult to make became a synonym for boring and common.
people have the audacity to equate vanilla with “plain”. the fruit of a delicate orchid pollinated by hand. worth its weight in solid gold and beyond. the fussy black-and-cream jewel of the american continent. you sick son of a bitch. imagine a world without vanilla. no blondies. no pound cakes. no crème brûlée, no coke floats. no cream soda. no satiny new york-style cheesecakes. no warm apple pie à la mode. no velvety complexity to bring out complex notes in chocolate desserts. no depth of flavour in your cakes and cookies and milkshakes. all in just a few precious seeds or grams of paste or perfumed teaspoons of liquid black platinum. what you don’t understand could fill the library of alexandria seven times over and then some. you ungrateful bastard i’m going to kill you
#food history#food#cooking#vanilla#vanillin#most artificial vanilla flavor isn't made from wood pulp anymore either#there's a different process used now that's cheaper and more consistent#but if you've never had real vanilla it is VERY different from imitation vanilla#but it's still very expensive so it's best to pay attention to how much of the subtle flavors will survive whatever you add it to#sometimes the $2 a pint stuff works just as well as the $15 an ounce stuff

Foods to Eat and Avoid After Wisdom Teeth Removal
Recovering from wisdom teeth removal requires careful attention to your diet to ensure a smooth healing process. Eating the right foods and avoiding those that can irritate your gums is essential. If you're undergoing wisdom teeth removal in Waterloo, ON, following these dietary recommendations will help promote faster recovery and minimize discomfort.
What to Eat After Wisdom Teeth Removal
During the first few days after your procedure, your mouth will be sensitive, and chewing can be difficult. Sticking to soft foods that won't irritate the extraction sites is essential. Here are some foods that are safe to consume:
1. Smoothies and Milkshakes:
Smoothies made from fruits and vegetables are not just easy to consume but also packed with nutrients. Boost protein intake by adding protein powder or Greek yogurt. Consider milkshakes, too, but skip the straw to prevent dislodging the blood clot and causing dry sockets, a painful condition.
2. Soups and Broths:
Warm, not hot, soups and broths are excellent choices for post-surgery meals. Opt for smooth soups without large chunks of meat or vegetables. Creamy tomato soup, chicken broth, and blended vegetable soups are perfect for providing essential nutrients without causing discomfort.
3. Mashed Potatoes:
Mashed potatoes are soft, easy to eat, and can be flavored with a bit of butter or gravy for added taste. This comfort food is ideal for keeping you full while allowing your gums to heal.
4. Yogurt and Pudding:
These are easy-to-swallow snacks that offer a good amount of calcium and probiotics, which can help with digestion and overall health during recovery.
5. Scrambled Eggs:
Fluffy scrambled eggs are a great protein source and can be seasoned to your taste. They are gentle on your gums and easy to digest.
Foods to Avoid After Wisdom Teeth Removal
Certain foods can irritate the extraction sites or get stuck in the wound, leading to complications. It's essential to avoid these foods during your recovery period:
1. Crunchy and Hard Foods:
Foods like chips, nuts, and hard candies can break into small pieces that might get lodged in the extraction sites. This can cause irritation, delay healing, and even lead to infection.
2. Spicy Foods:
Spices can irritate the sensitive tissue in your mouth, causing discomfort and prolonging the healing process. It's best to stick to bland foods until your gums have fully healed.
3. Acidic Foods and Beverages:
Citrus fruits, tomatoes, and carbonated drinks can cause a burning sensation and slow down the healing of the surgical sites. These should be avoided during the initial recovery period.
4. Chewy Foods:
Foods like steak, chewy bread, and gummy candies require more effort to chew, which can strain the healing areas and increase the risk of dislodging the blood clot.
5. Alcohol and Caffeine:
Both alcohol and caffeine can hinder the healing process and should be avoided until full recovery. Alcohol can also interact negatively with pain medications, while caffeine can lead to dehydration.
Tips for a Speedy Recovery
Aside from watching what you eat, there are other steps you can take to ensure a smooth recovery after wisdom teeth removal. Keeping your head elevated, applying ice packs to reduce swelling, and gently rinsing your mouth with a saltwater solution can all contribute to faster healing. Additionally, if you are searching for a reliable dentist in Waterloo, ON, for follow-up care, make sure to choose one with experience in post-operative care.
Conclusion
Understanding the right foods to eat and avoid after wisdom teeth removal is crucial for a quick and comfortable recovery. By choosing soft, nutritious foods and steering clear of those that could cause irritation, you can help your gums heal faster and reduce the risk of complications. If you're undergoing wisdom teeth removal in Waterloo, ON, following these dietary guidelines will set you on the right path to recovery.
