Drug Overdoses and Mental Disorders Tied to Drop in Longevity in US
Tumblr media
MedicalResearch.com Interview with: Dr. Preston Samuel Preston, Ph.D. Professor of Sociology University of Pennsylvania MedicalResearch.com: What is the background for this study? What are the main findings?  Response: Life expectancy at birth in the United States is low by international standards and has been declining in recent years. Our study aimed to identify how these trends differed by age, sex, cause of death, metropolitan status, and region. We found that, over the period 2009-11 to 2014-16, mortality rose at ages 25-44 in large metropolitan areas and their suburbs as well as in smaller metropolitan areas and non-metropolitan areas. Mortality at ages 45-64 also rose in all of these areas except large metropolitan areas. These were the ages responsible for declining life expectancy. Changes in life expectancy were particularly adverse for non-metropolitan areas and for women. The metropolitan distinctions in mortality changes were similar from region to region. The cause of death contributing most strongly to mortality declines was drug overdose for males and mental and nervous system disorders for women. MedicalResearch.com: What should readers take away from your report?  Response: Mortality in the working ages has been rising in the United States, particularly in non-metropolitan regions. These areas deserve special attention in public health efforts.  MedicalResearch.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this work?  Response: Identifying reasons for the poor U.S. performance in mortality, especially in the working ages and non-metropolitan areas, is of critical importance. Areas to be investigated include job losses in manufacturing and their mental health consequences, supply and demand features of the drug epidemic, the rise in obesity, and changing migration patterns. Citation: Irma T. Elo, Arun S. Hendi, Jessica Y. Ho, Yana C. Vierboom, Samuel H. Preston. Trends in Non-Hispanic White Mortality in the United States by Metropolitan-Nonmetropolitan Status and Region, 1990-2016. Population and Development Review, 2019; DOI: 10.1111/padr.12249   The information on MedicalResearch.com is provided for educational purposes only, and is in no way intended to diagnose, cure, or treat any medical or other condition. #storytime I called the police today after I watched two armed men trying to break into somebody's home. They ended up walking toward where I was and were shouting "she's in there, you should have kicked in the door.". They paced back and forth until a car that had been circling the block pulled over. There were three more men in the car, and they were all shouting "where is she". After my other neighbor rolled his cameras back, the police noticed that one of those men was waving a pistol near the house they were banging on. So, what vexed me is, why the hell are five armed men chasing one woman? What did she do? What are they so extremely upset about? Why would they do this in broad daylight, when children could have easily been playing nearby? What the hell is going on in anchorage? Is this what happens when people allow drugs to take over? Sure is a bummer to have to call the cops on a sunny beautiful sunday. #anchorage #alaska #alaskanews #adn #ktuu #drugepidemic #gunviolence #men #women #murder #abduction #violence #apd #alaskapolice #anchoragecrime #news

"Gary Webb" Repost @conscious_awareness_ The corporate media and the government worked together to silence Gary Webb after he helped expose their crimes to the American public. He was murdered. Webb is best known for his "Dark Alliance" series, which appeared in The Mercury News in 1996. The series examined the origins of the crack cocainetrade in Los Angeles and claimed that members of the anti-communist Contra rebels in Nicaragua had played a major role in creating the trade, using cocaine profits to support their struggle. It also suggested that the Contras may have acted with the knowledge and protection of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The series provoked outrage, particularly in the Los Angeles African-American community, and led to four major investigations of its charges. The Los Angeles Times and other major papers published articles suggesting the "Dark Alliance" claims were overstated. After an internal review, The Mercury News ultimately published a statement in May 1997 acknowledging shortcomings in the series' reporting and editing. Webb resigned from The Mercury News in December 1997. He became an investigator for the California State Legislature, published a book based on the "Dark Alliance" series in 1998, and did freelance investigative reporting. Their efforts succeeded, costing Webb his career. On December 10, 2004, the journalist was found dead in his apartment, having ended his eight-year downfall with two .38-caliber bullets to the head. These days, Webb is being cast in a more sympathetic light. #garywebb #murdered #conspiracy #hero #thankyou #cia #americanpublic #wakeup #reported #report #reporter #corporatemedia #journalist #darkalliance #read #holysmokestv #holysmokes #holysmokescrafts #oneman #solo #crack #crackcocain #drugs #drugepidemic #justsayno #propoganda #warondrugs #drugs #arrest #southcentral (at Los Angeles, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/B3VTs2HBGuN/?igshid=c69w571h171w

I'm so thankful that I found #recovery 😁 when I was in active addiction I was honestly dead inside, a shell of a person.. but now that I have some substantial clean time I finally feel like I'm Alive and Livin again!! And I'm going to live every day to the fullest because I'm not only living for myself, but also for all of my friends that have passed away from this insidious disease and just could not pull themselves out of it.. So I've got a lot of Livin to do!! And I'm so grateful for passed friends, current friends, and family that have all supported me through this long winding #roadtorecovery 🙈🙉🙊I know how easy is it to relapse and fall back into the same behaviors so I'm constantly vigilant in maintaining my sobriety💯 🔞 📷 😄 🌠 #addiction #survivor #drugaddict #addict #drugabuse #drugepidemic #spiritual #faith #faithful #god #grace #pray #prayers #happy #goodmood #sohappy #happier #photography #photo #pic #selfie #selfies (at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania)

Coming across this trailer on an abandoned farm in Northern Illinois, I started to look around very carefully for signs of recent activity. Not because I was worried someone still lived here, but because between the RV, a garage and an old barn, all buried in deep bush off the road, this place had all the makings for what I'm guessing would be a good Meth lab On this page I often talk about population decline in rural America, since that is what my documentary is about, but I would be doing an injustice if somewhere along the way I didn't at least mention the drug epidemic that has hit many rural areas. It's something I think about while traveling through small towns and seeing people at gas stations, or fast food restaurants whom have clearly been using, or when i walk through abandoned farms like this one. I'm not saying there are cracked out people all over the place, but first with Meth and now Heroine & Opioids the rise of drug problems in some areas has hit epidemic proportions. If you were unaware of this issue, please do some searching on the Internet and you'll see it's even led to an increase in HIV infections in some areas because of needle use. It's really a shame that it's happening and that many people are unaware. #LostAmericana #populationDecline #smalltowns #ruralamerica #meth #methlab #herione #opioids #drugaddiction #drugEpidemic #barn #farm #abandoned #rv

I said I wasn't going to reveal myself, but I figured I should... and I'll explain. My name is Cameo... and let me start by saying, I created this page to raise awareness for the heroin epidemic we are facing. I was also hoping we could stand together and hopefully decriminalize the heroin use. (Let me be clear, there should be punishment for dealers, but not addicts) I would prefer addicts go to rehab instead of jail. I am a photographer, so I thought I could use my skill to help give people a platform to openly talk about their addiction, and hopefully help others from becoming addicted to heroin. I decided I wanted to do this because I have a cousin (who shared his story via letter with me from prison) who is addicted to heroin and also dealt heroin. My cousin, Manuel, is currently serving a multi-year sentence in the Utah State Penitentiary, and we send letters to each other weekly. He struggles with many demons because of his own addiction, as well as the pain he caused others by selling this horrible drug. My other reason is because I had a very dear friend that became addicted. We searched for him for close to a year while he lived on the streets of Denver. He is home now, and he is sober and I couldn't be happier for him. I started by telling stories of some very brave individuals that stepped forward and were willing to share their stories. This has recently stopped because I became extremely discouraged. I was asking people to share their stories, and people would message me wanting to....but they wanted heroin or other drugs in exchange for their stories. When I refused to help get them high, they assumed I was a cop. I am not a cop, nor will I help you get high in exchange for your story. Plain and simple. I want to help people, not help kill you. No, I won't go to the cops either. I am hoping that by showing my face, telling my story, that will help lift any shadow of doubt people may have. I'm hoping I can start meeting with people face to face again, or even via messenger, to get their stories, so that this page can return to what it was meant to be. #heroin #heroinstories #facesofheroinproject #drugs #recovery #heroinepidemic #drugepidemic

Raise awareness for drug overdose this March 6th, 2016. Most of us has either lost someone from drug overdose or knows someone who is a drug addict. To make this epidemic known and to stop this once and for all please purchase a black balloon and hang it right outside your home for the day. When it is March 7th properly dispose of the balloon.
