2024's Top NFL Rookie QBs: Touchdown Famine Raises Eyebrows
By: Joseph Correa
The 2024 NFL Draft was heralded as a quarterback bonanza, with six signal-callers selected in the first 12 picks. However, as we approach Week 3 of the NFL season, these young gunslingers have found themselves in uncharted waters – and not in a good way.
The Touchdown Drought
The 2024 quarterback class has yet to throw a single touchdown pass through the first two weeks of the season. This dubious distinction includes three Week 1 starters: Caleb Williams (Chicago Bears), Jayden Daniels (Washington Commanders), and Bo Nix (Denver Broncos). Together, they've accumulated a staggering 196 pass attempts without finding the end zone through the air – an NFL record for rookies to begin a season, according to Opta Stats.
Individual Performances
Caleb Williams: Baptism by Fire
The Bears' No. 1 overall pick, Caleb Williams, has had a baptism by fire. Behind a porous offensive line, Williams has been sacked nine times, tied for the league high. His stats tell a grim tale:
267 passing yards
2 interceptions
0 touchdowns
Pressured on 43.2% of dropbacks (3rd highest in NFL)
30.4% completion rate under pressure (worst in NFL)
21.8 passer rating versus pressure
Williams is on the verge of joining an exclusive club he'd rather avoid. Only three No. 1 overall pick quarterbacks have failed to throw a touchdown pass in their first three games: Terry Bradshaw, Michael Vick, and Alex Smith. While this doesn't spell doom for Williams' career – all three of those quarterbacks had successful NFL tenures – it's certainly not the start he or Bears fans envisioned.
Jayden Daniels: A Silver Lining
Of the rookie starters, Jayden Daniels has shown the most promise. While he hasn't thrown a touchdown, his overall performance has been encouraging:
410 passing yards
0 interceptions
132 rushing yards
2 rushing touchdowns
Daniels has made history as the first rookie quarterback drafted in the first round to amass over 500 total yards without a turnover in his first two career starts since 1970. His dual-threat capabilities have been on full display, providing a glimmer of hope for Washington fans.
Bo Nix: Turnover Troubles
Denver's Bo Nix has struggled with ball security, throwing four interceptions in just two games – tied for the league lead. His stats paint a picture of a quarterback finding his footing:
384 passing yards
59.7% completion rate
4 interceptions
0 passing touchdowns
1 rushing touchdown
60 rushing yards
Nix's 0-to-4 touchdown-to-interception ratio is currently the worst in the NFL, a concerning start for the Broncos' new signal-caller.
The Waiting Game
While Williams, Daniels, and Nix have been thrust into the spotlight, their draft classmates are still waiting in the wings. Drake Maye (New England Patriots) and Michael Penix Jr. (Atlanta Falcons) have yet to take a regular-season snap, while J.J. McCarthy's (Minnesota Vikings) season ended prematurely due to a preseason knee injury.
Looking Ahead
It's crucial to remember that we're only two weeks into these young quarterbacks' NFL careers. The transition from college to the pros is notoriously difficult, and many successful NFL quarterbacks have struggled early in their careers.
As we look ahead to Week 3, all eyes will be on Williams, Daniels, and Nix to see if one can break the touchdown drought. Their development throughout the season will be a fascinating storyline as they navigate the challenges of the NFL and work to justify their lofty draft positions.
While it's far too early to make definitive judgments about the future of these young quarterbacks, their rocky start serves as a reminder of the steep learning curve in the NFL. As history has shown us time and again, early struggles don't necessarily predict long-term failure. The true measure of these quarterbacks will be how they respond to adversity and grow throughout their rookie campaigns.

Time for the Lakers to evaluate the future
Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors weren’t good enough to make it to the first round of the NBA playoffs. Keven Durant and the Phoenix Suns were swept in four games by the Minnesota Timberwolves. LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers are one and done after the Denver Nuggets took them out of the postseason after five games. This is not an abbreviation. Or a mistake. Between Curry, James, and Durant, the three future Hall of Famers have 10 NBA championships. That doesn’t matter now. What matters is what’s current.
Denver Nuggets guard Jamal Murray (27) goes up for a shot against Los Angeles Lakers forward Anthony Davis (3) during the second half in Game 2 of an NBA basketball first-round playoff series, Monday, April 22, 2024, in Denver. (AP Photo/Jack Dempsey) The reality for the Lakers is that if they do not acquire another superstar talent soon, the LeBron James era will have come and gone with one abbreviated title which took place during the pandemic year of 2020. That would be a shame. But then again, the National Basketball Association (NBA) is a young man’s game. The game of basketball does not wait on anyone. You come. You’re there. You play, and then you depart. After 20 seasons of basketball in the NBA, James is a lot closer to leaving. James has won four championships during his career. It now looks like he may not win another unless some miracle happens. That’s because a new era of basketball has stamped itself on the NBA landscape. James and the Lakers are out of the NBA playoffs after participating in just one round of action. Last season, the Lakers made it to the Western Conference Finals where they succumbed to the more superior Denver Nuggets. After sweeping the Lakers in four games, the Nuggets advanced to the NBA Finals where they claimed their franchise title. The Nuggets kicked James and the Lakers out of the postseason again. This time it took five games instead of four. The Nuggets used to be patsies in the NBA, one of those teams that always lingered at the bottom of the NBA. That’s not the case anymore. Until someone says otherwise, the Nuggets are the best team in the league. While the Lakers have relied on tradition and an aging superstar to keep their mythical tradition alive, the Nuggets have gone out and secured the services of players in their prime. Players like Jamal Murray, who cold-heartedly dropped daggers in two of the four games against the Lakers to give Los Angeles the boot from the postseason. Murray shot a dropback fadeaway over Anthony Davis with no time left in regulation of Game 2 to hand the Lakers a heartbreaking loss. Murray did it again to the Lakers in Game 5. With a possible Game 6 riding on the outcome of Game 5, the Lakers played the Nuggets down to the wire. Once again, the Lakers left Murray alone on an island to go one-on-one with a singular defender with time winding down in the fourth quarter as they did in Game 2. And once again, Murray burned the Lakers for their miscalculation. Much like the way the Lakers played in Game 2, Murray was allowed to walk the ball up the court unimpeded and allowed to set up his game-winning shot. It was a bad call by the Lakers. Those decisions may wind up getting head coach Darvin Ham fired after two seasons of guiding the team. Ham is not why the Lakers have not beaten the Nuggets in 12 of the last 13 games they have played one another. There is some blame to shoulder for Ham, but he cannot be the singular reason why the Lakers have finished 1-8 in the two postseasons against the Nuggets.
Los Angeles Lakers guard D'Angelo Russell conferring with head coach Darvin Ham in a 127-116 defeat to the Los Angeles Clippers on Jan. 23, 2024. Photo credit: Mark Hammond/News4usonline.com The truth is that the Lakers are not good enough anymore. The days of just showing up and stepping on the court meant victory is gone. The Lakers need to make a move this offseason to bring in another big-name talent to play alongside James (if he sticks around) and Anthony Davis (who is always hurt). What is James going to do outside of being a box-office draw? Yes, James can still play basketball. Michael Jordan could still play after he left the Chicago Bulls, but he never won another championship after leaving the Windy City. James is no longer the player who can will his team to a title. He needs help. A lot of it. That is just a fact. And other NBA teams are no longer beholden to the Lakers or are eager to help them to stay on top. Those other teams want their own traditions, parades and championship rings. Speaking of rings, unless Santa Claus is kind enough to bring some from the North Pole, it might be a long wait before the Lakers are fitted again for one inscribed with purple and gold on it. 2024 NFL Draft QB Tracker: Carson Beck continues his surge; J.J. McCarthy struggles
We’re not quite to the point where Carson Beck gets better at something every time he takes a dropback, but it kind of feels like that. The Georgia fourth-year junior is improving (rapidly) week to week — and has been all year. The latest example: a sparkling 24-of-30, 298-yard, three-touchdown performance Saturday in a 38-10 win at Tennessee. Everything about Beck’s box score this year is great:…

[ad_1] NFL: Seattle Seahawks at Baltimore RavensQuarterbackStart: Will Levis, TitansLevis and the Titans get a supreme matchup with the Bucs this week. Tampa Bay has fallen to 26th in EPA per dropback and their opponents have recognized this weakness. The Bucs have faced the fourth-highest pass rate over expected this year. Even better for Levis is Tampa Bay’s injury report. They were without three corners in practice on Wednesday including two starters, Carlton Davis and Jamel Dean.Start: Geno Smith, SeahawksSmith has been on an aggressive downswing over his past four games, tossing four scores and six interceptions with another two lost fumbles. Smith hasn’t played his best football over the past month, but he has also faced one of the hardest schedules in the league. He got the No. 1, No. 2, and No. 12 defenes by EPA per dropback over that stretch. He threw two touchdowns and was only intercepted once while averaging 9.1 yards per attempt versus the Cardinals, his only easy matchup over October over the past four weeks. He gets a Washington defense that ranks 30th in EPA per dropback this week.Sit: Deshaun Watson, BrownsIt’s hard to trust Watson most weeks. He has one game over seven net yards per attempt and opened the year with as many touchdowns as interceptions through two weeks. He looked better in Week 3 before injuring his shoulder. After a lengthy absence, he was solid in Week 9, tossing two scores with no picks. He might be back, but it has been a mixed back for the former Texan. The spot we don’t want to buy into uncertainty is a road game against the No. 2 defense by EPA per dropback allowed. The Browns have a hilariously low, 15.75 implied team total this week. The only team Vegas expects to score fewer points is the Tommy DeVito-led Giants.Sit: Russell Wilson, BroncosWilson has successfully rebounded this year, but the Broncos are doing everything they can to avoid putting up fantasy numbers. They rank last in the NFL in plays per game because their defense can’t keep the other offense off the field. Denver also ranks 23rd in pass rate over expected. They get a Bills team that allows the fifth-fewest plays per game to opposing offenses in Week 10.Running BackStart: David Montgomery, LionsWhen David Montgomery starts, we start him. It’s that simple. He ranks sixth in the NFL in touches per game and fifth in goal line carries. Not goal line carries per game. Despite missing three games and part of a fourth, he is near the top of the league in total usage near the end zone. Even with his role almost certain to be scaled down in his first game back in the lineup, Montgomery has RB2 usage as a floor.Start: Jonathan Taylor, ColtsTaylor SZN has arrived. In Week 9, Taylor played on 75 percent of the Colts’ snaps and earned 62 percent of the team’s carries. He also ran a route on three-quarters of his team’s passing plays. Most importantly, he was the only Colts running back to see a carry inside the five-yard line.Sit: Kareem Hunt, BrownsWith Jerome Ford off the injury report heading into Week 9, the Browns committed to him as their primary back with 25 touches on a 63 percent snap share. He earned over half of the team's carries and ran a route on more than 50 percent of Deshaun Watson's dropbacks. Hunt held onto the goal line role but not much else. In a game where Cleveland isn't likely to get near the end zone often, that role shouldn't result in many fantasy points.Sit: Brian Robinson, CommandersIn winning efforts for Washington, Robinson has been a beast. In four victories, Robinson has averaged 16.3 carries for 60 yards and .75 touchdowns. That has been good for 16.7 half-PPR points per game. His fantasy output is nearly halved in losses.BROB.pngThe Commanders are 6.5 underdogs on the road versus the Seahawks this week. Seattle ranks 10th in EPA per rush attempt allowed.Wide ReceiverStart: Demario Douglas, PatriotsDouglas is the last man standing in a decimated receiving room for the Patriots. Kendrick Bourne went down with a season-ending injury a few weeks ago and DeVante Parker is once again out because of a concussion. Douglas has run a route on 81 percent of his team’s dropbacks over the past three weeks with a 19 percent target share. He has also been moving around the formation, meaning he won’t be the receiver subbed out for 12-personnel looks.Start: Brandin Cooks, CowboysThe Cowboys have a 28-point implied team total this week. That is over a point higher than any other team. Cooks’ route rate of 87 percent in Week 9 was tied for a season-high. Dallas also gave up on Michael Gallup, giving nearly half of his reps to Jalen Tolbert. The Giants are expected to be without their top corner, Adoree’ Jackson, this week. All of this points to Cooks being his team's clear WR2 in a spot where they should score points in droves.Sit: Christian Watson, PackersWatson entered Week 9 struggling to make the most of his strong role as Green Bay’s top air yards earner and the team’s primary end zone receiver. Though Watson not doing anything with that role may have been frustrating, seeing all of a team’s high-leverage looks is a good problem to have. The bad news is that the problem disappeared in Week 9, and not for the better. His target share fell to eight percent, the lowest mark of his season.Week 10 isn't a great time for the Packers to draw up long-developing deep throws to Watson either. Jordan Love ranks 26th in Pro Football Focus passing grade under pressure and is about to face PFF's No. 6 pass-rush unit.Sit: Jahan Dotson, CommandersDotson has seen an uptick in volume in recent weeks, but that has coincided with Curtis Samuel missing plenty of snaps and then an entire game with a toe injury. Samuel ran a route on 37 percent of Sam Howell’s dropbacks in Weeks 7 and 8 before missing Week 9. Unsurprisingly, Dotson’s target share went from 14 percent heading into Week 7 to 19 percent over the next three games. His end zone target share and targets per route run also rose. Samuel looks likely to return this week, putting Dotson on the backburner once again.Tight EndStart: Jake Ferguson, CowboysFerguson is top-10 in targets per route run, air yards share, and target share among tight ends this year. Most importantly, he leads all tight ends with an absurd, 42 percent end zone target share. In a game where the Cowboys should be able to score at will, Ferguson’s odds of finding paydirt are high.Start: Taysom Hill, SaintsHill is 12th in the NFL in red zone carries. He also has four targets plus two pass attempts in the red zone. Just over 35 percent of his opportunities have come in the red zone this year. Hill is a touchdown specialist and he is one of the best in the business at this job.Sit: Kyle Pitts, FalconsIt’s looking over for Kyle Pitts. In the first five games of the year, his route rate sat at 84 percent and he had earned 40 percent of his team’s air yards. Those numbers have fallen to 66 percent and 19 percent in his past four games. Pitts isn’t seeing a full complement of routes and his downfield usage has disappeared. On a run-first offense, his days as a TE1 appear to be over.Sit: Cade Otton, BucsOtton scored a pair of touchdowns on nine targets in Week 9 but hadn’t shown any ability to draw targets before the Bucs’ shootout with the Texans. He has been targeted on 14 percent of his routes and earned just his second end zone target of the year last week. Otton isn’t a bad stash in deeper leagues, but banking on him repeating even a fraction of his Week 9 production is a weak bet. [ad_2] Source link

Fantasy football QB rankings Week 8: Who will start, top sleepers at quarterback
With no crew on the bye, 32 signal-callers return to our Week 8 fantasy QB rankings. Whereas this may occasionally look like an optimistic factor in concept, extra choices can complicate our start-up choices. Worry not; as a result, we're right here to help you perceive which quarterbacks have one of the best probabilities of persistently leading scoring drives, raising your fantasy soccer crew's probabilities of nabbing a dunk this coming week. Exterior of Gardner Minshew's 305-yard, four-TD effort towards Browns protection that entered Week 7 as essentially the most environment-friendly cease unit, Week 7 performed true to kind. The standard juggernaut (Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen) lived up to the hype, whereas a number of lower-tier QBs (Russell Wilson, Tyson Bagant, Brian Hoyer) had quite underwhelming fantasy days. How will all of it shake out in week 8? Extra: Watch NFL RedZone Stay with Sling (50% off first month)
Which QB is bye in Week 8?
Week 8 Commonplace Rankings: RBs, WRs, TEs and D/STs kick That being said, we nonetheless have a number of banded-up QBs to watch all through the week, so a number of fantasy homeowners will nonetheless be on the lookout for viable alternative choices. Week 8 PPR Rankings: RBs, WRs, TEs and D/STs kick
Who's one of the best fantasy QBs in Week 8?
Patrick Mahomes (@ Broncos Week 8) goals to keep up his good 12-0 file towards Denver, seeking to construct on his 300-yard, one-TD effort within the Chiefs' Week 6 win over the Broncos. Justin Herbert (vs. Bears) is licking his chops this week, going through a Bears protection that entered Week 7 permitting the fifth-most fantasy factors per recreation (FPPG) to QBs. Even when the Brian Hoare-led Raiders decelerate, search for Herbert and firm to seek out success against the Bears on Sunday night. Lamar Jackson (@Cardinals) noticed a slight improvement in his Week 8 rankings, drawing a Cardinals protection that entered Week 7 because it was the least environment-friendly protection on a down-to-down foundation, with a league-worst 50.6 percent success fee. Count on Jackson to continue his sturdy play with one other dependable fantasy day. Jared Goff (vs. Raiders) and C.J. Stroud (@Panthers) additionally sit as top-10 performers in Week 8. Fantasy homeowners might look to bench Goff after a 38-6 blowout loss to Detroit; however, Raiders protection is precisely what Goff wants. Watch her regain her confidence. Stroud is getting higher each week, and since he is a rookie, we do not fairly know his fantasy ceiling.
Who's one of the best fantasy QB sleepers and waiver pickups in Week 8?
Jordan Love (vs. Vikings), Derek Carr (@Colts), and Kenny Pickett (vs. Jaguars) profile because of the crop of sleepers and waiver-wire pickups in this week's QB-friendly matchups. Whereas the Packers offense hasn't run as easily as they'd like, Love has crushed it from a fantasy standpoint. Inexperienced Bay's QB1 enters Week 7 ranked as Fantasy QB8 in factors per recreation (19.2 ppg), and he turned in one other two-TD day towards the Broncos. An inviting matchup towards Vikings protection that ranks beneath league common in dropback EPA provides Love loads of sleeper enchantment. The Saints hope their second-half offensive surge towards the Jaguars is an indication of issues to return, and if there's ever a week to roll out Carr, Week 8 is the time. The Colts enter Week 7 permitting the eighth-most fantasy factors per recreation to a QB, so there's cause to consider New Orleans' offense will function at an environment-friendly clip and prime 300 yards via the air for the third straight recreation. Pickett drew a Jaguars protection that allowed the second-most fantasy factors per recreation to a QB getting into Week 7, and with Deonte Johnson again wholesome, we may see his finest fantasy output of the season. In deep/superflex leagues, contemplate taking Desmond Ryder (@ Titans), Gardner Minshew (vs. Saints), and Baker Mayfield (@ Payments). The Raiders and Falcons aerial assault can exploit a vulnerable Titan move protection that is among the least environmentally friendly models towards the move in comparison with its dropback EPA. We do not anticipate Minshew to copy his elite Week 7 fantasy display; however, he did a commendable job filling in for the injured Anthony Richardson. Regardless of a tricky matchup for Mayfield towards an elite Payments defensive position, a probably unfavorable recreation script permits him to put up a good fantasy day for some rubbish time factors.
Who's the largest potential QB bust in Week 8?
Joe Burrow (@49ers), Geno Smith (vs. Browns), and Matthew Stafford (@Cowboys) all noticed vital drops in their Week 8 rankings, as they have been compelled to create drives towards the league's most full protection. Barore definitely appeared like a special QB, together with his calf getting higher by the week; however, we might counsel leaving him on your bench if the 49ers matchup. Smith did not do a lot in a positive matchup against the Cardinals in Week 7, and we anticipate a harder fantasy day against the Browns this week. We'll depart Stafford with bench duties in Week 8, as now we have no real interest in beginning him towards a well-rounded Cowboys cease unit on the highway.
What were the largest QB accidents in Week 8?
Earlier than Week 7, Justin Fields (finger), Jimmy Garoppolo (again), and Daniel Jones (neck) weren't wholesome enough for accidents to sideline them in Week 8. Backup Tyson Bagent (the Chargers) will probably make his second straight start in Week 8. Nonetheless, Garoppolo ( @Lions ) is leaning towards returning to Detroit on Monday night time. We'll see if Jones can log no less than one restricted session in observe this week, probably resulting in his return to the Jets. We anticipate Tannehill (ankle) to overlook Week 8, placing Will Levis in line for his first profession to begin. Concerning in-game accidents, Deshaun Watson left the primary half with a head injury. Watson didn't undergo harm and was cleared to return to the recreation motion; however, head coach Kevin Stefanski was determined to play PJ Walker in his place. As mentioned, we put Watson in our preliminary Week 8 rankings because we predict he'll return to the field this week. We'll be updating these QB rankings all through the week, so test again for the most recent participant actions and evaluations.
Fantasy QB Rankings Week 8: Who Will Begin, Sit at Quarterback
This rating is predicated on 4-point passing TD Scoring Rank participant 1 Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs @ Broncos Lamar Jackson, Ravens and Cardinals Jalen Hurts, Eagles and Commander 4 Josh Allen, Payments vs. Buccaneers Justin Herbert, Chargers vs. Bears 6 Tua Tagovailoa, Dolphins vs. Patriots Jared Goff, Lions vs. Raiders 8 CJ Stroud, Texans @ Panthers 9 Kirk Cousins, Vikings @ Packers 10 Dak Prescott, Cowboys vs. Rams 11 Trevor Lawrence, Jaguars @ Steelers 12 Jordan Love, Packers vs. Vikings 13 Derek Carr, Saints @ Colts 14 Joe Burrow, Bengals @ 49ers 15 Brock Purdy, 49ers vs. Bengals 16: Kenny Pickett, Steelers vs. Jaguars 17 Matthew Stafford, Rams @ Cowboys 18 Geno Smith, Seahawks vs. Browns 19 Desmond Ryder, Falcons @ Titans 20 Sam Howell, Commander vs. Eagles 21 Russell Wilson, Broncos vs. Chiefs 22 Gardner Minshew, Colts vs. Saints 23.
