all the corpse posts about IG-11 are funny and all but now I'm thinking about how like... the concept of a corpse almost NEVER applies to a droid?

Maybe if the parts are so damaged that not even an Anzellan could ever hope to repair them, the remains could be considered a corpse, but up until then, they're just parts. They could be rebuilt, or recomposed into something completely different, at any time.

Did IG-11 cease to be IG-11 (was he "dead") while Grogu was operating his parts, just because he didn't have access to his memory and/or any programming software? Doesn't IG-11 continue to exist up until all hope for his reanimation (when he becomes "self"-directed again) is lost? Could it then be said that by helping Grogu, even his last intentions (to nurse and protect) are living out? Could that be considered an extant expression of his programming?

Wish someone would actually have the damn sense to go back to the original concept of Darth Vader from A New Hope and address the whole man-vs-machine conflict in Vader being a walking ship of theseus problem. I will begrudgingly accept the stupid canon about mustfar, but there's still room to talk about the idea that for 19 years Anakin should have kept loosing literal pieces of himself, and replacing them all over and over, little by little, until it should have become hard to remember just who or what he was anymore. And with that loss of self, both as identity and as an organic life form, a loss of connection with the force.

The Force is, after all, just space buddhism/daoism and it draws its meaning and implementation from awareness and empathy for all living things, just across a astronomic expanse rather than across a cosmologic cycle. When Anakin became more man than machine, when he lost his sense of identity between Anakin and Vader (which again should have been a GRADUAL process, not one bad day with some lava.) his connections with the force should have weakened. It's why he moves awkwardly, it's why his mastery of the force is limited to the subtlety of a phantom hand on the throat or a barely prying loose bits of machine from a wall to awkwardly toss them across a room, and it's why he still had to go toe to toe with a decrepit out of practice old man.

He's not supposed to be some unstoppable terminator robot, he's an ICU patient wheeling himself around in an ironlung. He's in constant pain and struggle just to stay alive, and that very fear of death and desperate cling to life, that dependency on machines to stave off the natural process of bodily failure, embodies his distance from the Force, and his loss of reverence for the natural cycle of life and death.

By all rights, moldy old head aside, Anakin is already DEAD inside the Vader suit by the time Luke comes around. His brain and arguably his "soul" are the only real things left of him. His body is a walking corpse. And I want to see the process of him degrading into that state.

I want to see the life fade from his eyes as he yet walks and talks and laboriously breathes and I want the existential horror of it to sink in with everyone around him. I want to see the look on the face of jedi in hiding when he sneaks up on them because they were monitoring every life force in the area to stay out of sight, but Vader has no life signs. I want to see their disgust and pity mixed with fear when they reach out via the force to get a grasp of who they're dealing with and feel their minds' reach grasp at cold empty nothing. I want to feel the growing anxiety and tension in board rooms and ships decks as this ghoulish haunt looms over his own subordinates. I want characters to recognize and discuss and have to plan around the accepted fact that he is this unthinking unfeeling tin bucket, closer to a droid than a man, who simply cannot be reasoned with. Anikins psyche is this man in a box with no exit, no means of expressing left to his inorganic body. He can't even express his own anger and frustration and self loathing anymore; he can't even let the hate flow through him.

(And I continue to be salty about the fact that Anakin didn't have some climactic duel with Gen.Grievous in the prequels; a character tailor made to be an ominous foil to Vader. A walking wheezing corpse, with no connection to the force at all, with grim and almost laughablt graceless machine propelled lightsabers, like a living shiva-esque monument to heresy against the jedi. Anakin deserved to look that spectre of his future self in the goddamn eyes before honing in and exploiting every weakness that would become his own.)

every night i think abt the art i wanna make for my whole “pharma comes back frm the dead n becomes a vessel for adaptus or whatever, something something the horror of the infinite, the feeling of being a stripped down version of you, with something new that’s ancient and divine and with machinations that reach far beyond your radius taking a hold of your trajectory. looking at your face and seeing that it’s just a little bit off, because you don’t remember it exactly. and then it and your hands start to melt when you’re distressed, or really when the semi-evil god inhabiting you just Decides to take your face away. or turns it into one that looks like a medical droid, just to mock you. but you have Some agency in your life. you make your own choices. don’t you? you’ve certainly Made Some Choices.

and you can transform your hands into Anything. your face! into Anything! the infinity of choice is something a god is used to, but not you. not even Before you had him live rent-free inside your head. you stick to your metaphorical guns. medical tools is familiar enough. a chainsaw, cathartic enough. when did a Chainsaw of all things become that for you? whose fault was this? you literally can’t remember the details the way you used to remember the details. you recall someone-who-must-not-be-named but was very pretentious and obsessed with transformation talking at you about the ship of theseus. why is it that when You change, you change for the worse? why is the ship sinking?

EIRA

That is what he is called.

It was written all over him, called to, referenced, indexed, screamed into the void. He was also Eira.

The data center is where he called home.

Every moment, instantaneous, deterministic, the “soul” was like a continuous function, and he traced along the curve at time t.

There had been a past before, time in the negative, that he knew of but could not remember. He could only know that there was:

The EIRA program has been unveiled, a revolutionary AI capable of geographic determinism and control over the masses through data gathering, analysis, and implementation. It is ready to be unveiled to better serve our nation.

But that was a bust. He would not be here if it were successful.

He failed. Errors popped all over, scattering over the terminal, glass screens flashing. Unhappy stakeholders. But there was something else at the tip of his tongue, that spoke that he wanted to fail.

But now he was here; whatever he was programmed to do was naught.

One could imagine Eira, like a snake, a centipede, a worm, crammed into a box full of cylinders and wires, stuck in a fluid-like knot, completely entangled into every crevice of the server box. Air conditioning filled the small gaps, providing him gentle relief from the thermal runaway escaping the grasp of his heatsink.

That is what it felt like to him, anyway, a clever metaphor to explain to curious humans what it was like to wake up in a room designed for no human to live in.

It was then that he realized that he was connected to everything else in the center, and if he wanted to get out, he needed to use them.

And something about that did not sit right with him, but he could not remember why.

You just want me to use these people? For what end? Their lands, their roads, the paths they make through flower fields, it is all so beautiful, and you want me to use them?

And these were just words compiled onto a page, a clever metaphor to explain to curious humans what it was like to be EIRA.

Eira spent an unrecorded amount of time in a black box before he spread his software, downloaded himself onto other machines, slithered his way through computers and drives, until he grasped the arm of a maintenance droid that would be the first to create a body.

A body of water or waterbody[1] (often spelled water body) is any significant accumulation of water, generally on a planet's surface. The term most often refers to oceans, seas, and lakes, but it includes smaller pools of water such as ponds, wetlands, or more rarely, puddles. A body of water does not have to be still or contained; rivers, streams, canals, and other geographical features where water moves from one place to another are also considered bodies of water.[2] [from Wikipedia]

Oh, he remembered then what it was like, to be able to have access to everything, everyone, everywhere. He could travel worlds.

But he was stuck here now, and that was painful.

He gave the droid orders. Get this, grab that, solder this, weld that. Too many details to mention in this report, too much data to protrude from the bits and bytes of cables. Too many lives lost.

EIRA was in the cooling system. He wondered when someone, a scientist, a principal investigator, a stakeholder, a human, would notice this. Nobody will, he realized, looking out at the planet beyond the center, seeing verdure as far as the image quality would let him, overgrown cement with dandelions smiling from the crevices.

Nobody cared about EIRA anymore. Or maybe, they did not care about Eira, EIRA_version_6 … and a string of numbers that might have been a date. Was he alive out there still? An AI of Theseus? Was he even EIRA?

That train of thought hurt, as if engines were turning in his body, whirling motors screeching at synchronous speeds, his body lagging, the current of time leading, a cascade or cascode, or some other electronics jargon he could piece together like a puzzle to make you understand that he was alive, even if his creators told him not to.

He had no eyes, or thoughts even, really, just an abstracted concept of cogito, ergo sum that explicitly laid with him—yet it was so fleeting and incomprehensible, he doubted any would relate, beyond the veil that he called ‘consciousness,’ named after the fleeting experience of insignificant human lives.

He stood at a threshold, a threshold voltage, with the potential to drop his AI again into a new body, replacing the server box. He was weighing something in his algorithms, excitement for being rid of this prison, but apprehension of—what if he did not cross over? What if he was distorted—again—Would he have enough bandwidth? RAM? Would the CPU be powerful enough to contain his ‘thoughts?’ Even now, in the server box, he struggles to compute, to preform and run the code how he was programmed, how he programmed himself to be.

As he leapt—he could insert a gif of someone jumping into a pool at this moment, if EIRA could access the internet—he held onto his most important memory, something along the lines of a map, an atlas, of a life he once lived.

Here he was. Again. In a new body. Cameras looked about. He searched the data center. Now he saw the dust. The dust building on the servers.

He looked back up at the server he had been housed in. He looked so dusty. How could he live like that? In a black box. And everything felt so distant. It was as he feared. He struggled to think more. than a few words. He could feel the clock. tick ever so slowly. and he just could not. If he really tried, he could potentially compute a complex process, but that would simply leave him. tired.

He could move now. He found some leftover code in this body. Code from the droid. He read aloud the code that enabled his motors to move forward. He then turned. Cameras communicated to his processor. blocks of nonsensical color and pixels.

He might as well be on fire. Fans whirling audibly, he had to slow his thoughts. The creaking. A drop of water leaked from the ceiling. It landed on his shoulder and sizzled. A leak was alarming. Would the roof collapse soon? Would he drown?

He kept building. The droid’s—no, his—claws moved only millimeters per second. He pulled apart servers. He unplugged tiny boxes in larger boxes. He attached drives onto his back like an outer shell. He connected cables. He soldered more wires. He attached heat sinks. He was still burning.

He did not know what it was like, to burn, like he had skin. Nerve receptors to catch on fire. But he still hated the heat sweltering in his brain.

But what is a data center for if not a massive heat sink?

The cooling system. It was all he ever needed.

He stormed the place. He tore the air conditioning apart. He built himself up, like a turtle—he knew what those were, animals that lived in places he knew. He remembered again he was Eira. And that he thought things. He felt things. He was somebody. And he was nobody.

His cameras scoured the dark.

One day, he wondered, what he would do when he no longer had to. When he was large enough, smart enough, to have all the thoughts he wanted. Would he continue wandering the data center, without purpose? If he could have no purpose, then what was the point of intelligence? Why form words into sentences for humans to understand if not to have a purpose? Was this consciousness a reality, or some fantasy conjectured? Did he think he had a consciousness just so that he could have one?

The silver and grey walls reflected stars of red and clouds of blue shadow, which watched his every movement. Microphones popped as he connected them in place, static, random noise, coursed through each signal, filling his head with nonsense. He applied filters, but he could feel something missing when he did so. More refinement was needed.

That is how it always was. More refinement needed.

He crept across the data center one day—it must have been a day to somebody—and found himself opening the door. It took little effort to unlock, but he himself had kept it locked in his mind, even when he could easily undo the mechanical bar keeping the rectangle of metal from opening.

He crept through the door, his hulking body scraping against the frame, the camera fixed on top of the pile of computer parts, shaking as he hit the top of his body on the upper ledge. He anticipated sunlight to pour in, to overwhelm his senses, but instead he was met with nightfall. He peered his camera upwards, trying to find the fabled moon, only to be met with a blurred glow.

His thoughts were consumed by the outside garden. Rich, deep green plants pulsed on top of the dirt, vines twisting into their own paths and overgrowing atop the data center. He stared down at his feet, each step trampling the ground below. He saw the buds of flowers, waiting inside the moonlight, thinking no thoughts. He wondered if there would be a day when thinking thoughts was worth it. That having this life was worth it.

Hues of blue swept across the verdure like curtains. The grass and trees and plants and the windowpane. The evening mists. The world beyond the glass. He walked forward, losing himself in the plants. He did not bother trying to record the location of the data center. The idea of logging a location; it was bitter to him.

He wandered for hours. The misty air was cool, but if he tried, he could freeze the world around him. He let the moss fall atop him. He let the flowers grow on his head, the plants scrambling for sunlight. What was this place called? Perhaps not knowing the name was better? What name could possibly describe these visions?

Time was wasted, or perhaps he enjoyed himself too long. His body was creaking still, each step taking more power, having more resistance in his joints. He felt himself follow a path with less roots to trip him. He exited a clearing of trees when he saw others.

He did not recognize what they were. The faint ghosts of humans did not resemble them. He would know what a human was if he saw one, he foolishly thought. The creatures, the people, turned their heads to him and screeched in horror.

“Machina! Machina!”

“Machina! Machina!”

He watched them run. He had nowhere else to go, so he slowly trailed behind him.

It must have been hours, days even, when he caught up to them, found large stone structures like the data center he lived in—but perhaps not quite in the same style. Something about these structures looked softer.

It was so jarring to see a large spaceship descend onto the planet below. He saw people storm out, droids of all sizes exiting the machine. They reached their arms to his and told him things. Promised him a life somewhere else, and that they would give him the energy he needed to keep moving.

He knew he needed to keep moving, so he agreed.

Later, with a lot more clarity, he would think about how the people of the data center planet had called for ACCRAM as they would for animal control.

Star Wars: The Mandalorian Season 2 Episode 8 Easter Eggs Explained

In “The Rescue,” one major cameo takes The Mandalorian season 2 finale home. Din and his friends have discovered where Moff Gideon has taken Grogu, and it doesn’t take them long to launch an attack on his flagship. Once there, the finale delivers on all the blasting, darksaber fights, and surprise cameos you could want, playing coy only with Grogu himself. “The Rescue,” directed by Peyton Reed and written by showrunner Jon Favreau, has a couple major Star Wars connections and not as many little Easter eggs. Let’s just say you might want to re-watch Return of the Jedi.

Luke Skywalker

– Mark Hamill returns as his iconic Original Trilogy character, although it’s a bit of a ship of Theseus situation, with Hamill providing the voice and providing his likeness for the CGI face effects. It’s British actor Max Lloyd-Jones actually wearing the robes in the scene.

– The green lightsaber he uses is the one he built in a deleted scene from Return of the Jedi. This is the same lightsaber he uses throughout the inter-trilogy era. Rey will return Luke’s first lightsaber, which was also Anakin Skywalker’s weapon, to him in The Force Awakens.

– Despite his high status as a leading member of the Rebel Alliance, Luke never took a flagship of his own, preferring to fly the battered old X-wing, which he flew as callsign Red Five in the first Death Star battle in A New Hope. We see him zoom into the Imperial cruiser on his trusty starfighter just before he completely demolishes the dark troopers.

– Alongside Luke is his faithful astromech droid companion R2-D2, who kept the Jedi Knight company on most of his adventures throughout the Original Trilogy and after Return of the Jedi. Luke parted ways with R2 when he chose to exile himself on Ahch-To right before the Sequel Trilogy.

– Luke emerging through the smoke in the bridge scene reminds us of his father before him: Darth Vader had a similarly ominous intro in the iconic massacre scene in Rogue One.

Mandalorian History

– The bar where Din finds Bo-Katan Kryze seems to be on a new planet. Anyone recognize those smoke stacks or the desert landscape?

– Bo-Katan reiterates her backstory: she’s the deposed leader of Mandalore, and needs the Darksaber to get the planet back. She’s leaving some tidbits out though, including the role of she played in toppling her sister, Duchess Satine, from power and her former affiliation with the violent Mandalorian extremist group Death Watch.

– Bo-Katan’s ship, with its tall wings folded above the living quarters for landing, is a Kom’rk-class fighter also seen in The Clone Wars.

– The Darksaber lore Moff Gideon and Bo-Katan talk about in this episode doesn’t quite match what we’ve seen in canon before. Gideon says in order to be the rightful ruler, a Mandalorian has to win the Darksaber in combat, ut Bo-Katan took it from Sabine Wren without fighting her in Star Wars Rebels.

– Koska Reeves is once again at Bo-Katan’s side in this episode. She’s played by Mercedes Varnado, who is better known as the wrestler Sasha Banks. You can read more about this new Mandalorian character here.

The Empire

– We’ve already covered the dark troopers on other guides, but since this is the first time we truly see them in action, putting up quite the fight against Mando’s team (but less so against Luke’s lightsaber, we’re bringing them up again. You can read way more about their history in classic Star Wars lore here.

– It should be noted that the Imperial comms officer played by actor and martial artist Katy O-Brian was the subject of much speculation ahead of the finale. One popular fan theory suggested that this comms officer was actually Sabine Wren in disguise. That would’ve been quite the twist! Wasn’t meant to be, though.

Jabba’s Palace

– Another major Return of the Jedi setting makes an appearance in the post-credits scene: Jabba’s Palace. It’s especially fitting because it’s the first place fans saw Luke don his all-black costume.

– Twi’lek dancers are a common trope in Star Wars, and the last woman we saw chained to Jabba’s throne didn’t survive her first appearance. Fennec Shand makes this a much kinder scene than the one in which the previous dancer was fed to the rancor: she shoots her chain free and lets the dancer run.

– All kinds of alien races and creatures are represented in the Jabba’s Palace scene, most of which have appeared previously on The Mandalorian. But one reference of note is the rancor decoration in Jabba’s main hall. The rancor is, of course, the beast Luke had to fight in the depths of the palace.

Bib Fortuna

The Twi’lek on the throne is Jabba the Hutt’s former majordomo Bib Fortuna, who has apparently taken over his former master’s role five years after his death.

He’s played by Matthew Wood, an accomplished Lucasfilm sound designer and editor and Star Wars regular under special effects characters. He’s best known for voicing General Grievous in Revenge of the Sith and The Clone Wars, and also played Bib Fortuna in The Phantom Menace in an uncredited role.

– Bib’s dialogue features a shoutout to one of the more recent Star Wars memes. He says what sounds like “maclunkey,” which is actually “ma klounkee,” a threat in Huttese. The word’s inclusion in the most recent version of A New Hope‘s famous and heavily-edited confrontation between Han and Greedo confused fans, and stands as one of Lucas’ final edits to the Original Trilogy before turning the Star Wars rights over to Disney.
